12:06 AM
I think I found a program called autokey to do it

UE4 finished:
Total build time: 6958.42 seconds (Local executor: 6052.00 seconds)
Now it's compiling shaders...

12:37 AM
nearly 2h?
What are you building?
Windows 10????
:O ;-)

@Fabby unreal engine
and its nothing compared to OS kernels
it takes days to compile linux kernel

0_0
It took me half a day or so....
for a whole system. From scratch
(Gentoo)

@Avery Last time I tried more then 10 years ago it took 4h on a 486DX
:D

0_0
that was an old computer then ;p

(when it was still required for a firewall to compile your own kernel to keep shit you didn't want out of it as there was no such thing as a low-latency kernel)

12:43 AM
lol ah
When I do that I'm just going to throw pfsense on it

@JourneymanGeek Bettter?

@JourneymanGeek old computer, old kernel

About 1996-7...

@Avery not necessarily
You can buy a new 386 ;p

@JourneymanGeek an ARM386, you can still buy new...
:P ;-)

12:45 AM
@Fabby they still make embedded 386es and 486es
I was thinking these dmp.com.tw

I knew 386es were input processors to a Cray, but didn't know that one...

and theory, if you had the right subset of skill and insanity, you can make/design your own 486 compatible processors.

@JourneymanGeek I've got the insanity, though not the skills...
:D :D :D

not sure if pentium is post-patent
and x86_64 is way out

What the heck?
How am I using amdgpu all of a sudden?

12:49 AM
0_0

I thought it failed to install...

@NathanOsman Apparently, even Nathan is only human and can make mistakes??? :O :O :O

But OpenCL doesn't work...
I need to revert to the Radeon driver...
I bet that means all the shaders need to be recompiled...

I thought he was a GOD!

Sometimes drivers show up when they aren't even used... ie Noveau when Nvidia is really active.

12:51 AM
;-)

I'm just a human.
3

you are??

WE ARE :)

@NathanOsman Starred! (That should be converted to a PSA)
:D :D :D

some with special powers though

12:52 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix What's your special power then???

it's not cooking and cleaning.... need to hire someone for that.

Wait a minute.
It's a builtin package??!
$ apt list --installed | grep amdgpu

WARNING: apt does not have a stable CLI interface. Use with caution in scripts.

libdrm-amdgpu1/zesty,now 2.4.76-1 amd64 [installed]
xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu/zesty,now 1.3.0-0ubuntu1 amd64 [installed,automatic]

@WinEunuuchs2Unix :D
Cooking is easy! Cleaning is easy!
(the former is a joy, the latter a drag...)

Not when you are bash coding and deciphering arrays! Then C & C is a chore.

CNC? Computer Numerical Control?

12:54 AM
Although a C & C expert might call bash coding a chore.
Cooking and Cleaning expert... I've heard they exist.

Ah!

It wouldn't be my chosen profession but I have great admiration for C & C experts.

I could say something about that, but I'm going to keep my big mouth shut...

fringe benefits perhaps?

There's a mesa-opencl-icd package!?!

12:56 AM
So for Tag ALL and Untag ALL could I summarize them using "en masse"? or is my french wrong?

Why doesn't anyone tell me these things?
Here's what Canonical needs to focus on: documentation.

ha
documentation

I'm left in the dark trying to find everything and docs are not kept up to date.

riiiight

@NathanOsman It's a built-in package!!!
There!

12:57 AM
But it wasn't there before.
Oh, it was!
Wat.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Correct! (sorry, missed that)
I need a smoke! BRB...
AFK for 5 min

$ ./cltest
Platforms:
  0. Clover
I thought my card was Pitcairn?
This just keeps getting weirder and weirder.

Better to have things you didn't have than to miss things you had...
(I've had a drink too many: getting too philosophical!!!)

@Fabby You never clued in when you first came into the room I asked you what the best drink was in Germany :D
ie Your typing gave you away from the start :p

1:14 AM
Does anyone know how to specify a specific driver for my GPU?

On you Dell N5110?
haha just teasing you... the answer is already no :)

New plot twist...
I tried adding blacklist amdgpu to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf.
...and it still loads the module.
???

Q: using opensource radeon driver instead of amdgpu

Srijan Kumar SharmaI've HP-15 av125ax laptop which has AMD Carrizo A10 CPU and R7 m360 dGPU. I'm running Ubuntu 16.04. Ubuntu is loading amdgpu driver which is causig a lot of instability (crash on sleep, over heating till thermal shutdown). How do I switch to opensource radeon drivers. Ive tried blacklisting amdgp...

So I'm not completely insane yet.

Yeah I've blacklisted .ko modules before and they still load too shrugs
speaking of which is there a program that tells you when to cold boot your router when it's dns or whatever it's called becomes corrupted?

I'll ask it here:

Q: How to blacklist amdgpu?

Nathan OsmanI would like to blacklist the amdgpu driver. I opened /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and added the following line: blacklist amdgpu Then I rebooted and ran lsmod | grep amdgpu: $ lsmod | grep amdgpu amdgpu 1564672 23 i2c_algo_bit 16384 1 amdgpu ttm ...

1:31 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Asbach Uralt...

Argh. I'm late once again...

I need to drive 800Km later today so I need some sleep....
Good night everyone!

Very interesting talk by Stack Overflow CEO Joel Spolsky:
besides the part where he's still butthurt about the election, but otherwise very interesting.

Q: Error in displaying the videos

user6490375I have logged into a remote VM using SSH. I am trying to run a bash script (.sh) that would fire up a video. However I am facing difficulties in doing this. I have set up the DISPLAY variable to various values ranging from :0.0 to :0 as per various other answers on SO; however I still face this e...

2:23 AM
Woot woot!
I finally got it working!

yo Nathan

amdgpu is no more on this machine.
radeon is up and running.
And it boots \o/

Watching Oilers and Sharks anthem singing just now. Why is it Hockey players have to gyrate and twitch while anthems are sung as if it's important to the game to be a gyro-top but whilst the game is being played they have no problem sitting still on the bench other than huffing and puffing catching their breath?

My brother has it on the radio.

Tell him to get off the radio because his butt is blocking the speakers and muffling the sound!
oops msread... thought your brother was an announcer "on the radio" sheepish grin

2:55 AM
And after all that.
The UE4 editor hard locks the GPU.
I am forced to perform a soft reset.
Is that not a security issue? A userspace app making the GPU puke?

hey homies

Yo, what's up?

upgrading my laptop to zesty :)
one of my laptops *

Cool.
I should do the same with my laptop but haven't had the time yet.

what do you think about the fact that Ubuntu wants to switch to gnome 3 on 18.04 how do you think that's gonna go?

2:59 AM
I don't like it.
I switched to KDE.
It's far more powerful and works better IMHO.

D: I hate KDE

Wat.

every version i tried is too glitchy

Have you tried it in the last year?

and kickoff sucks, and so does the desktop manager KDM

3:00 AM
It has changed an awful lot in the last year.

affirmative, yes

The last few builds are more stable.

i hate basically every version of kde on every os.

that krash reporting thing,, KEEPS POPPING UP
probably the #1 most succesful app on KDE: the krash reporter
please star that comment!

3:01 AM
I did a clean install of Kubuntu 17.04 and it works very well.

:P
you dont have the krash reporter pop up every 5 seconds?

@Windows3.1 Hey long time no see!

hello @WinEunuuchs2Unix

You been busy upgrading to Windows ME?

3:03 AM

@NathanOsman I also have edgy eft installed on an older laptop :)

It's quite beautiful.

hmpf
you know what? if Ubuntu cared about beauty they'd take a look at Zorin's desktop. its open source...
or even xfce

@NathanOsman Is kubuntu based on Gnome or Unity?

Im on ChaletOS on my desktop right now (my ubuntu is upgrading) and it's pretty decent too

3:04 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Kubuntu uses KDE.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix its based on KDE

KDE is built on the Qt framework.
Unity is (or should I say "was") a Compiz plugin and used GTK+.

@NathanOsman so 17.10 is goign to be artful aadvark?

Yes.
Don't know where the "artful" comes from but whatever.

"was" is a good word :)

3:06 AM
dangit

There.

ah, thanks
whatdya do different?

beautiful, can I rent it?

You just paste the raw URL.
It will automatically onebox the image.

ah
thats an xfce thing

3:07 AM
Ah. I think you want the "full size image".

mk
same size

Not for me.
If you click on the first one, it's a small preview.
If you click on the second, it's a full size image.

ah ok
I get it
if ubuntu merged with zorin 12 it would become much more popular

Just don't suggest Mint :P

Big fish like Canonical don't like to merge with smaller companies... they just buy them.

3:10 AM
yeah, i like cinnamon but mint DE sucks
duh, zorin isnt a company

If you ever need a lightweight DE that uses very little memory, enlightenment is nice.

yeah ok, but zorin DE should be accepted by Ubuntu and possibly become the default, they would become SO popular SO fast,
I'm afraid if they go to gnome 3 zorin will EXPLODE in popularity

Isn't Zorin using Gnome?

I mean... I think a lot of people will go for gnome 3, and I think a lot of people wont
@NathanOsman it's 3/8 gnome

A: Which desktop environment does Zorin OS use and how to get for Ubuntu?

cioby23Zorin OS use Gnome 3 Desktop Environment with customized themes. To install Gnome 3 use the following command: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gnome-shell ubuntu-gnome-desktop Then you need to get the themes from Zorin OS and apply to your Gnome installation. Since Zorin OS uses Ub...

It's just Gnome with a custom theme.

3:13 AM
actually not really, as the WM is very modified

I'll stick to KDE, thanks.
I can't stand Gnome.

I heard you can get a Windows 10 skin for Ubuntu too?

I have a PPA with packages that I've patched by hand just to allow Gnome users to change the volume increment.

if it werent for Unity using LightDM it would be as much GNOME as zorin
although zorin's DM is modified too

Because the stubborn Gnome devs refuse to accept the patch.

3:14 AM
@NathanOsman make me an awesome DE

stubborn gnomes, eh

@Windows3.1 Ain't got time fo dat.

:(
it might go popular

@NathanOsman I kind of like 10 volume increments on Ubuntu rather than the 100 increments Sony TV has.... It allows me to turn down volume faster.

I'm very busy trying to get my Docker/nginx bridge working.

3:15 AM
its about time Linux gets a decent notification center
Windows 10 and RemixOS have it

@WinEunuuchs2Unix But the point is that users should be able to choose which they prefer.
Gnome devs were saying "we know best; we're doing it this way".

I think both Windows, Mac, and Linux should all learn lessons from RemixOS

@NathanOsman Good point

@Windows3.1 I gave RemixOS a try and it was nice.

@NathanOsman yeah. i dont like that many features dont work but the layout should be looked at very carefully
VERY CAREFULLY

3:17 AM
@Windows3.1 Are there features that don't work?
I didn't find any.
Everything I tried worked well.

well, glitch out i mean
its tough to get it installed, and most google play apps dont work, and the apps that do dont realize they arent on mobile

The EGL => OpenGL translation layer is awesome.

but either way::: that layout deserves a close look

@Windows3.1 Really? I never had that problem.

uh whatever,
my point is the layout

3:19 AM
The layout?

zorin 12 gets close to that, we just need that notification center like what win 10 and remixos has

It resembles Windows 7, right?

no, it resembles windows 10

the notification center and panel

3:19 AM
Ah.

thats what im saying, now is a CRUCIAL PERIOD for Linux as Ubuntu switches to GNOME. Now's the time to do something awesome if you EVER want to!
if you make a DE like that, you can make a big difference
you have until 2018 :P

That's not enough time for one person to create a desktop environment.

then get a team together

It's far more complicated than it sounds.
Honestly, if I'm content with KDE, why would I do that? :D

to make a difference :D as KDE isnt as succesfull as suckers like unity, GNOME, cinnamon, xfce, and MATE
i wonder how far docky could strech for that, i should test it. the worst of it would be the notification center. the menu, any menu will work

3:24 AM
LXQt is coming soon.

yeah, looks too much like cinnaon
ive allready seen that
*cinnamon
ill probably give it a shot though. people really love those nice think w7/8/10 style panels

I suppose they're alright.

which are hard to find, the only DE's that have it are ChaletOS 16.04.2, zorinOS, and it can also be attained with Docky
the fact is, people LOVE that. thats what they WANT. the Windows users switching over.
they arent switching from windows vista, they are switching from 7+
and honestly, the closest we've got is zorin or chalet, but they dont have that nice notification center
btw its my favorite style
oh, and Unity gets sort of close too, but unity is dying anyways

@NathanOsman that looks like KDE

@Windows3.1 KDE has that.
That's the beauty of KDE.
It's so flexible.

3:29 AM
not by default,
it might have that option
i know KDE 4 had it, it sucked though
KDE 5 may have improved it, i was too busy closing all the error messages to try that out :P lol
or, are you talking about the notification center?

I'll get you a screenshot...

that's the new default?

Not the default, but easy to add.

3:32 AM
thats pretty recent, about 2 months ago i had it and it looked like the MATE panel
ah ok
have you seen zorin's newest panel yet?
it's really getting there

check it out

But I'm sure whatever it is, KDE can be made to look like it :P

well check it out ok? it will give you a decent perspective
also there are multiple panels
check them out see which one is best

I'll give Zorin a shot sometime. I have a number of virtual machines with different DEs for testing NitroShare.

3:34 AM
(Y)

Gnome, MATE, Cinnamon, KDE, XFCE, etc.

honestly, im about to just join zorin 100% because if ubuntu makes a stupid move they are going to skyrocket. only so many people are going to like Mint, and with an award winning website like they have, they are going to do really well
@NathanOsman check out their website zorinos.com it is quite a website!

3:57 AM
lololol

4:21 AM
anyone used pandoc before?

Nope.

I can't get it to indent codeblocks in a numbered list properly. The code blocks never follow the indent of the list.
Guess I will be asking a question on their Google group
aha, figured it out. I was thinking like a tab and 4 spaces were the same thing, but it treats them differently.

4:38 AM
Sublimetext -> convert all tabs to spaces...

Interesting.
@Seth did you see this?

although, what's new?

6:45 AM
It looks more yellow than usual. It seems I liked a few of them :)

6:57 AM
Well, I finally managed to get Ubuntu to use the radeon driver for my video card instead of amdpgu.
I think at least a couple of the messages are related to that.

congrats :D

Things feel a little bit more stable now but the entire system still crashes when I try to run UnrealEngine on it.
I would file a bug but somehow my kernel is tainted.

7:23 AM
@Anwar I agree, better to have the extra line in the output. We could also add sed '/md5sum.txt/d' but everyone hates sed
