sigh --^

Weird. This guy had come into this room asking for help with his question and then deleted it: askubuntu.com/questions/896900/…

LOL! --^

@ByteCommander will that work?

@AndroidDev Is he saying he's installing Ubuntu in virtual machine to dip his toes in water before installing for real on a new partition?

12:41 AM
Any Launchpad people around?
I've got a misbehaving PPA.

well I have a button that won't behave at all

I'm gonna try one more thing and then ask a question there.
Heh!
I fixed it.
Wow, what a nice long backlog for the arm builders. But no matter. It's the amd64 one that I need soon.

1:18 AM
weird
my ModInstaller app is installed in 49 devices, while ModControl is on 95
ModInstaller is needed for ModControl to work

You're missing my point. The fact that an OS can run inside of a VM does not mean that it will run well on the actual hardware. — Android Dev 36 secs ago

Getting a new standing desk. Finally forcing me to clean the old one lol
@NathanOsman What'd you think of overload?
I'm obviously extremely biased because I had so much fun playing the originals..

There wasn't much to the demo but from what I did play, the graphics were nice.
It takes a bit of time to get used to six axes of freedom.

(which you can still download the demos for, btw. Descent demo has 7 levels and the Descent II demo has 3)

Oh cool :D

@NathanOsman there are 5 levels, according to the files I have?
It's totally not finished yet though, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's not really much.
@NathanOsman yeah that's the cool part. Reaaaaally easy to get yourself dizzy though.

@Seth Congrats on the new desk... I was thinking of getting something for the old laptop and old tv and old bluray player that would be setup as some kind of file server and mostly closed up as it operated 24/7. Sort of like a book shelf with sliding doors or something... haven't really figured out what it would look like yet.

1:42 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Thanks! It's not anything special. $50 used off craigslist. But it's better than what I have :)
maybe I'll share a setup pic once it's all finished.. Chiropractor got upset with me about my current setup lol.

@Seth 50 bucks sounds great... transportation expenses are usually more. Yeah my back kind of gets sore too.. reclining couch with laptop on Ikea coffee table :p

@WinEunuuchs2Unix That's what got me. Been so sick I've spent days on the couch. Never quite sitting up, never quite lying down.

mouse on couch cushion is slowing creating carpal tunnel syndrome I think :(

Caused me a LOT of problems.

Lots of people sick at work too... world wide flu

1:45 AM
Guess what got an update...

not me
lol

@NathanOsman chrome?
eww

:(
Not Chrome, my chat script.

oh.. oops haha :P

And now I'm sad because you don't like the picture :P

1:47 AM
<-- hates fancy emoji

It's just an image.

I'm an ASCII emoji person.
The Google emoji aren't too bad. I think what makes me dislike them so much is the non uniform look they have across platforms.

Mine are using EmojiOne.

what's a chat script? I notice AU html puts in $lt; for < and $amp; for & in my latest project of scanning answers in AU for bash scripts and upvotes. Interesting AU answers contain "GPS tracking" tags... not sure what that's all about yet.
^^^ Hyper Text Markup Language is bizarre

Yup, HTML is a hodgepodge of standards mixed together in a non-coherent way.
The fact that it ever works, is, in itself, a small miracle.

1:55 AM
Well thank google for little "Inspect" gear.
um... cog on gear? ^^^
nvm I mean "Right Click" ^^^
Although inspecting this chat room with chrome doesn't format very well.
But for most websites it's good :)

raises eyebrow
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Well duh this is a chatroom lol
it doesn't like that at all

I just started dabbling in HTML for my latest project to compare bash scripts on my disk to AU answers which are in HTML.
Of course I've heard about Hyper Text Markup Language for decades, never really looked at it too closely until now.
Using bash to search through HTML matching up strings seems daunting right now. But like most projects once you get started and knocking off challenges one by one it will get better :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix This sounds a lot like trying to do something with HTML and Regex

What is "Regex" that's been nagging me for a couple of days now.

A regular expression, regex or regexp (sometimes called a rational expression) is, in theoretical computer science and formal language theory, a sequence of characters that define a search pattern. Usually this pattern is then used by string searching algorithms for "find" or "find and replace" operations on strings. The concept arose in the 1950s when the American mathematician Stephen Cole Kleene formalized the description of a regular language. The concept came into common use with Unix text-processing utilities. Today, different syntaxes for writing regular expressions exist, one being the...

2:07 AM
Sounds similar to the mayhem I'm entering. I'll be searching for "<div class="vote">" followed by "<span itemprop="upvoteCount" class="vote-count-post ">3</span>" but also searching for "#!/bin/bash" + 2 matching lines all at the same time whilst be mindful of being efficient in string comparisons and not getting lost while looking for multiple "things" at once. Like I said it seems daunting now, but it will work out like all other programming problems.

except Regex parsing of HTML in order.
That will summon that which is evil.

haha you had to throw "evil" into the equation :p

actually Ididn't this time
just read the relevant and important link under the onebox
that came LONG before me.

OK you didn't create evil you quoted it ;)

in this case yes
iin other cases, I created it.
and in yet other cases I've squished it

2:10 AM
Just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, evil is in the mind of the good definition.
as a lame example republicans are evil to democrats and vice versa.
I've explored the concepts of good and evil for decades now.
It just leads to drinking beer :p

Q: Ubuntu wifi connected but not working correctly

t0k3I just installed Ubuntu 16.04 LTS on my old Lenovo G50-80. I've been having issues with getting the wifi to work from the start. @Zacharee1 what do you call an interest of 3.14 % ? A pi-rate
( came up with this one myself just now after listening alestorm for like an hour )

7:44 AM
@Serg still awake? (You shouldn't be, but then could you do me this favour when waking up) Could you try a stupid empty script, importing Pandas (import pandas). It looks great, but on my system it take 0.53 sec. to only import!?

8:09 AM
@JacobVlijm python3 or python2 ?

@Serg python3

OK, will have to install first

@Serg ah, sorry thought it was default. Apparently I installed it some time.

Yeah, wasn't installed on my 16.04
@NathanOsman Having trouble sleeping again ? Also, that regular expression though @_@
$ time python3 -c 'import pandas'
    0m02.12s real     0m01.01s user     0m00.12s system
@JacobVlijm slow indeed ( and I have SSD here )

@Serg WOW. It looks really awesome, but that slow import :( In the meantime, I found a few more mentions of it.
I guess I won't be using it in loops when the script has to be called over and over again on a slow start.

8:16 AM
There's probably a reason why it's so slow, and there might be ways to optimize it
I doubt it went unnoticed by other people

Yeah, Trying to find it, there are indeed several posts on SO, but no solution.
It seems to have more performance issues: penandpants.com/2014/09/05/…

> There’s actually nothing to see because array indexing goes straight into the NumPy C extensions
That makes sense. If NumPy is done on C level, you can't beat that in performance department.

@Serg Yeah, if only the import wasn't so slow, it would be very interesting.

@JacobVlijm try doing from pandas import ... , some kind of function

@Serg Tried that too, same result.

8:27 AM
$ time python3 -c 'from pandas import *'
    0m01.12s real     0m00.94s user     0m00.10s system
:/ yeah, doesn't look too promising
Better than the last one, though, but by fraction of a second

I think for now, I'll spend my time on numpy :)
@Serg Thanks though!

@JacobVlijm always welcome

Q: No permissions on external drive after moving from Ubuntu (elementary) to Arch (Apricity)

deesnookI recently decided to move from elementary 0.4 Loki (based on Ubuntu 16.04) to the latest version of Apricity (11.2016, based on Arch). I had backed up my data on an external HDD (ext4 file system). However, when I connect the drive under Apricity, I do not have any permission to access the drive...

@ByteCommander I'll have to take a look tomorrow.
I wonder why...

@NathanOsman oh yeah, someone suggested that instead of replacing the text with images for only people with the script, you should replace the text with a unicode emoji before it's sent, so everyone sees it

Hmm I get upset when people close-vote text processing questions as off-topic

@Zanna link?
gotta CV

Seems to only happen at the weekend
No don't CV!

4:20 PM
:p

I'd be more inclined to close as Too Broad

What? There's only one possible answer and it's not even very long
shrug whatever, as long as people aren't thinking text-processing is off-topic

@Zacharee1 (1) not everyone sees those and (2) having the script modify messages before being posted is... a bit scary. I'm not so sure users will appreciate that, unless the script shows some kind of disclaimer.
What actually might be useful is an extra button that lets users insert them.

If text-processing is off-topic, then I'll go find some place where sed abusers are welcome ;)

4:30 PM
that question is on-topic

4:44 PM
@Zanna maybe not too broad, but I'm considering downvoting it for lack of research

@edwinksl thank you
@Zacharee1 I don't have an issue with that :)

I'm a close voter with a conscience. I don't consider text processing questions to be at all off topic, but I do consider "tell me what my code does" posted by a Stack Overflow user to be off topic, because it's a Trojan horse for asking all sorts of code debugging questions where they don't belong. There's 13,554,938 questions on Stack Overflow and 258,465 questions on Ask Ubuntu, so Ask Ubuntu should not be used as a mirror for Stack Overflow. It's better to use Stack Overflow as a mirror for Ask Ubuntu because it's such a huge site that it can easily absorb a few Ubuntu questions. — karel 18 mins ago
he does have a point

I don't agree with that - close questions on their own merits
