hmm. i saw.
you weren't in the voters list
afternoon ...
@edwinksl I got another ubuntumaniac.com/2016/06/… :)

@Zanna the very first revision is unclear

Welp, now I can't register for anything - the system tells me see department

hi Serg!

Hi, Anwar o/

7:03 AM
@edwinksl I can understand why it was voted unclear :)

7:13 AM
TIL, Linus uses emacs

Blech.

Bleach ?

A request has already been submitted to make it compile <5.6 quickgit.kde.org/…

7:51 AM
@Anwar it is not a PPA though, just a bug tracker

where are it's packages?

no idea

I should leave the idea i think

Q: How to run command everytime when the server is alive

forexknightI'm using Ubuntu 16.04 Server. I want to run specific command everytime when the server starts. I mean that this command should be executed when the server runs (continual work). This command is connected to PHP framework and starts web application. Normally I can run this command going to the...

9:32 AM
@Zanna whew, thanks for that. Gives me something to fall back on.

looks up to see what was going on
Yes, one does not mess with the short arms of the law.

@Zanna but this makes me puzzled.

@jokerdino Some folk seem to think that shiny mod badge counts for nothing. Its a pretty big hat tho ;p

@JourneymanGeek I was happy there was no drama here but people are people.
@JourneymanGeek yeah, being friendly gives people the wrong impression.

@jokerdino it was handled quickly, which is good
Yeah, I had to handle something similar on RA

9:39 AM
It's not really fun to parent people.

Who died and made me a grown up and all that? ;p

lolzer
@JourneymanGeek I have seen it all happen on RA and that might be a reason why I jumped a bit too soon.

@jokerdino I actually consider that the optimum time to handle it
there's no too soon

yeah, but it's not obvious what was prevented if it never happened.

I consider that a good thing
Its got nothing to do with our core topics, it does not involve your core chat userbase in a bad way....
Well @Zanna is a 'core' chat user in my eyes, but who's the other guy? ;p

Q: SPDIF choppy at higher datarates after reinstall

Craig GrahamI've a machine on which I've recently installed Mythbuntu, replacing an old and no longer supported Fedora distro on which the machine was previously running a MythTV frontend. No hardware has been changed during the update, yet video files that previously would play audio happily across SPDIF to...

10:13 AM
@jokerdino I mean, it is the principle, you don't have to read minds to do the right thing. If I'm being unclear, nothing new there :S
Thanks again & please let me know how I can help with anything...
@Zacharee1 got a helpful answer to the gimpshop question opensource.stackexchange.com/questions/4399/…

rathod dineshi am trying to make a file but i am getting following error : Setting up compilation... Building executable:> cs251_base [ERRORS] /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lglui collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status can anyone fix this issue ?

@Zanna ah it sounded like you were cool with how things were unfolding.

10:28 AM
@jokerdino what I wanted to say was, it's not only me who's protected by you explaining what isn't appropriate, everyone benefits from that and others know they can expect to feel safe too

10:42 AM
@Zanna This is a lot more clear and helpful. And thanks for the vote of confidence.

Always :)

user136984
11:35 AM
@KazWolfe And what makes you think I use Steam?

12:13 PM
@Zanna noice
My rep is an OfficeJet

OfficeJet Hehe

:p

@Arronical oui

Hi people

AH

@Zanna I don't feel good about this comment, but I still think I'm right pointing this out askubuntu.com/questions/805704/…

@grooveplex 50 not 15

12:35 PM
@Zacharee1 thx fixed

What does running an app have to do with setting up Thunderbolt Ethernet?
I'm confused

mod/high rep (im)mortals, can you rollback this revision to my edit? askubuntu.com/posts/819116/revisions

this person hid their private IPs askubuntu.com/questions/819131/…

nvm I can do that too

@grooveplex I made an edit

12:42 PM
I did the same before you, :/
This is going to be a mess I swear

heuheuheuhue
We need to close it anyway
it's way too broad

Wow a what a title 'How to resolve this.'

@grooveplex I had to reject the edit :/
because you removed the lists

@Zacharee1 what why? no i didn't
the system probably made it seem like i did

You removed the formatting

12:45 PM
whatever >:(

Lists needs a space then a number

I swear I didn't

Well you probably made the edit before I added them in
But go edit it again
with the other changes, leaving the lists
I'll approve

What no
Can I see the review?

12:46 PM
where?
@Zacharee1
and I already flagged 0:)

I can still clearly see the list
What's wrong with it? @Zacharee1

yes, but notice that it isn't indented anymore. The list formatting is gone. There's also a random newline in the codeblock

I don't agree with you, but alas
this is getting messy
Now someone approved my edit or sth
But it gets weirder: a 103 rep user just approved my edit askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/611211
AFAIK, you need 2000 rep for that?

@grooveplex it's the OP

12:54 PM
@Zacharee1 how does this site even work lol
jk

OP can approve dupes and edits to their own posts :p

@Zacharee1 that's dangerous
I don't think it should be like that

@grooveplex why the ping? I was worried it was about a post of mine that had something wrong with it
@grooveplex I think it's good,edit helps clarify what OP meant. If there's a problem, someone can re-edit
And dupe approval v important, saves pressure on the old CV queue

@Zanna sowwee :(
I just thought you have a lot of rep and you always know the right thing to do
(Seriously, about the rep. It's absolutely unprecedented. You're a Stack Exchange legend.)

@grooveplex no need to be sorry! Haha thanks for the flattery & feel free to ping if you like, it's not a problem, just wondering if I missed something :)
Nawww blush I'm just lucky & addicted

1:01 PM
lol

lol wat

Now I'm wondering if @Zanna's rep has the hockey stick spike

watch it get locked on 1

@jokerdino o_O

Lol ^_^

1:03 PM
yup, july 9th ;p

@JourneymanGeek must have been raining outside

Hahaha I was marking that exam, trapped at my computer
Work-avoidance

1:19 PM
@grooveplex because the folks who ask mint and kali questions know that those distros are based on Ubuntu, so they go, well, there's no Stackoverflow site for mint or kali , so i will as on Ubuntu, they're the same anyway

@Zanna Why does that sound familiar?

@Serg Apparently, Kali is only Debian
@Serg do you know if there's a way to query a specific xinput property?

@jokerdino strange I thought it was just me hahaha

There is a wiki article on "Work aversion".

@jokerdino are you supposed to be working?

1:24 PM
I am supposed to be doing my work - just not office work.
school work, home work, prep for exam, etc.

@jokerdino same thing
gr
What's the point of writing answers if I don't even get downvotes?

Eh?

I just wrote two answers. Not even a comment :p

@Zacharee1 i don't think so. I'd use grep xinput -list-props 12, where 12 is dev id. then grep what ever line you need

1:39 PM
ohh
So if I wanted to get the Device Enabled 1/0 line?

grep "Device Enabled", or use awk '/Device Enabled/{print $3}'

so xinput list-props | grep "Device Enabled"

yup

But I'd need to do something like if xinput list-props | grep "Device Enabled 1" == true
and "Device Enabled 0" == true

@Zacharee1 use awk then, i edited.

1:42 PM
What does it do?

prints 3rd column. Device is first Enabled is second. value is thirs
prints 3rd column. Device is first Enabled is second. value is third

ahh

store that to variable in case you need to do something else with that value

needs to be $4 actually
there's some number after Device Enabled
@Serg Yeah

I'd write whole thing but im on mobile, not the most convenient setup

1:45 PM
I wanna write a script for this askubuntu.com/questions/819148/… so that it can be run and enable the device if disabled and vice versa
this'll be fun
I can learn bash
@Serg do I need to define what a variable is, or can I just say OUTPUT=xinput list-props 5 | awk '/Device Enabled/{print $4}'
or would Python be better for this?
@Serg is this right?
#!/bin/bash

DEVICE=5

OUTPUT=xinput list-props DEVICE | awk '/Device Enabled/{print $4}'

if [ OUTPUT == 1 ]
  then
    xinput set-prop DEVICE "Device Enabled" 0
elif [ OUTPUT == 0 ]
  then
    xinput set-prop DEVICE "Device Enabled" 1
else
  echo "Something's up."
fi

2:05 PM
why
@ByteCommander do you know Bash?

Roughly.

Do you know if that script should work?

You need $ in front of your variable names to read them.

ahh

And you should not use all-CAPS names, as those might be reserved by the system.
User lower or mixed case names for your own scripts.

2:06 PM
OK
#!/bin/bash

device=5

output=xinput list-props $device | awk '/Device Enabled/{print $4}'

if [ $output == 1 ]
  then
    xinput set-prop $device "Device Enabled" 0
elif [ $output == 0 ]
  then
    xinput set-prop $device "Device Enabled" 1
else
  echo "Something's up."
fi
Comments in Bash are # right?

cool
so I can edit this into my answer

And you need to use output=$(INSERT_COMMAND_HERE)

2:21 PM
device ID can change between boots i think

I hate asking people to accept
@Anwar really?

as far as i remember. not 100% sure

hmm
doing some research

@Zacharee1 same here. but no way! you have to. their are lots of new users these days :)

yeah

2:25 PM
Lol echo "something's up"

anyone using gnome shell or unity ?

:p

???

I figured I might as well put an else in that isn't empty
@Anwar to Zanna

You rather I ask them to accept for you?

2:26 PM
@Anwar GNOME on my server
@Zanna meh, I asked
we'll see
they took an hour to respond, so it might take another hour to accept

They will I think

you got 3 upgoats there! let me find the dupe target ;)

tsk

Hehehe

What's the point of writing answers if I don't even get downvotes?

2:28 PM
deletevote

yeah!
well if anyone is using unity or gnome-shell and are willing to test. gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences mouse-button-modifier '<Super><Alt>' please check if that change the alt-drag window to super-alt-drag?
@Zacharee1 I think, you can change the script based on property of the device

2:48 PM
something strange has happened!!

hockey stick rep spike?

wat

3:07 PM
@KazWolfe basically your reputation graph has a sudden change in direction like _/

what happened @Anwar ?

@Zacharee1 No that script isn't quite right. I'll fix it up

that's what I wanted to know

What happened?

I don't know!

3:12 PM
@Zacharee1 here you go
#!/usr/bin/env bash
DEVICE=5

OUTPUT=$(xinput list-props $DEVICE | awk '/Device Enabled/{print $4}' )

if [ $OUTPUT == 1 ]
then
    xinput set-prop $DEVICE "Device Enabled" 0
elif [ $OUTPUT == 0 ]
then
    xinput set-prop $DEVICE "Device Enabled" 1
else
    echo "Something's not right."
fi

it seems suddenly everyone stopped!

Variables are referenced with $VAR
output captured must be instide $( . . . )

@Serg I told him that already :)
And using uppercase var names is discouraged because system and env vars are uppercase.

Q: Remote Xserver - Not working with Ubuntu 16.04 on specific machine

MadHatterI have scripted the install of Ubuntu Server 16.04 on two headless machines. Basically after I install stock Ubuntu Server 16.04 I run a setup.sh script that installs packages, adds users and configures a LAMP stack. One machine (HP Z820), when I ssh into it, a .Xauthority file is generated and...

@JourneymanGeek ah.
so bascially what's going on with me now lol
drowning in upvotes :D

3:22 PM
lovely problem to have

capping at 10 in the morning is sad

Q: How did my profile picture change automatically?

souravcI have not changed my profile picture or any other information in my profile. But can see a different identicon as my profile picture. Is it natural or some change is going on on the site?

3:43 PM
Hmm @Zanna tell me you didn't go through my GR profile and blog posts.

you still write blog?

@AskUbuntuMeta I had a similar problem when I had the identicon for a week or so. Scared me enough to force me to switch to my older gravatar.
@Anwar Nope :D
I realized I don't have that writing flair.

hmm. If you don't write for a long period, it'll go
will return if you start again

That sounds true. Some of the things I wrote makes me wonder if it was me who wrote it. Because it is of a better quality than I can imagine writing right now.

I experienced that :)

3:48 PM
It's definitely quite a bit of shock.

true that.

Well, the quality might not be par with native speakers/writers but it is still a level above my current abliity.

It's practice that matter i think in this case
You can't even write longer posts, if you don't practice it
Even reading habit can be lost

I agree with you here.

twitter/facebook contributed much on that imo

3:52 PM
Yeah, I hate them both equally.

Well, NetworkManager wouldn't recognize my PEAP connection (even though I delected a file for that in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections and tried reconnecting) untill I restarted NetworkManager. Not sure if that's a bug worth reporting

I don't use twitter. but got addicted to fb. though I'm trying to get rid of it

I totally agree with that, I read my old posts and think "hmmm surely I can't write like that" but it comes back with a bit of practice :) @Anwar @jokerdino
@jokerdino I didn't... well maybe a little. You can tell me not to, and I will resist :)

writing a boring answer :(
don't know why

Not all answers can be exciting
On side note, I'm going to be studying Wireshark this semester in Data Communications class \ o/ WOOO, supar eggs-cited

4:09 PM
sweet :)

I read sugar first

I probably should have used sugar , would confuse people even more :D

phew!

4:24 PM
was trying out the code just now, it's supposed to show value of the pointer of the previous function form the stack. Surprisingly the code from the book doesn't seem to work. Wonder if Linux kernel somehow fixed this . . . .or maybe the code is wrong

@Seth o_O
@Serg Byte told me not to capitalize

@Zacharee1 not to capitalize what ?

and my answer has the right one
variables

I capitalize them sometimes. Let me look up, there's gotta be a standard on this
Ah, i see. Lowercase is used to avoid confusing custom variables with environment variables. The all-caps variables are quite ubiquitous , so I think you are safe to use them @Zacharee1

meh
I made them lowercase in the answer
might as well keep it ;P

4:34 PM
Just good practice really

yup, just a good practice, not set in stone

@Seth yeah...
hope you like IPS

actually, that shouldn't be .txt, it's supposed to be a directory

@KazWolfe floor rounding is very inaccurate

but sometimes very useful

The very first starred message is a pretty funny bug report from launchpad by Marco Ceppi

Oct 1 '10 at 14:59, by Marco Ceppi
Microsoft has a majority market share in the new desktop PC marketplace. This is a bug, which Ubuntu is designed to fix. Non-free software is holding back innovation in the IT industry, restricting access to IT to a small part of the world's population and limiting the ability of software developers to reach their full potential, globally. This bug is widely evident in the PC industry. Steps to repeat: 1. Visit a local PC store. What happens: 2. Observe that a majority of PCs for sale have non-free software pre-installed. 3. Observe very few PCs with Ubuntu and free software pre-installed. What should happen: 1. A majority of the PCs for sale should include only free software like Ubuntu. 2. Ubuntu should be marketed in a way such that its amazing features and benefits would be apparent and known by all. 3. The system shall become more and more user friendly as time passes.

Q: Tag Synonym Request: [dual-monitor] -> [multiple-monitors]

Kaz WolfeThis is a really simple request. Anything more than one monitor is multiple, and there really should be no distinction between dual monitors and multiple.

5:07 PM
that sentencing to using windows 10 though askubuntu.com/posts/819239/revisions

hahaaha
automaximise?? dunno what they are talking about

no clue but anwar seems to know :)

when you drag the window to the menu bar
Aero Snap but on Ubuntu

+1 for @Anwar
what's wrong with that? seems pretty neat to me

@Zanna I like that the sentencing is to use the OS where that feature originated :p

5:12 PM
hehehe indeed

@Zanna that feature can be sometimes annoying . . .
But can be useful too

I've never noticed it even
I'm glad the question came up so I could discover that
<--noob
how are things going today @Serg ?
I'm sadly saying goodbye to my Arch machine tonight :(

@Zanna Had first class, super excited for that - Wireshark and networking. Figured that i will need to change my catalogue year, because otherwise it's going to be impossible for me to continue taking classes. Right side of chest doesn't feel that good. Gonna quit smoking for some time - need to recover my health.

@Serg yessssssss

:) sounds good

5:26 PM
@Zanna thank you :)

I got my BT keyboard for my tablet :D
uh oh

@Zanna Just that I am a little apprehensive of someone reading what I write.

though I didn't like that noise removal from @edwinksl

By my calculations there's tons of files to take, so what's likely going to happen is that . . . .I'll keep on taking classes, but I gotta slowly look for something external. College has been taking forever

@jokerdino please link?

5:28 PM
@jokerdino don't post it :p

I got me interested ...

@Anwar why is that?

Hello everyone :)

@zanna You could read what I write but it's unusual for me to know that people actually happen to read what I wrote.

@edwinksl should be sentenced to using windows 10 for lifetime :P

5:28 PM
@Anwar just my blog that you already know about :)
@Zacharee1 No one ever reads my blog post. So, there is not much difference if it was private or public.

ugh I have to do stuff

@Anwar that is evil

@edwinksl It's fun :)

@SeverusTux hi

@Anwar i might just dual boot windows 10 though just to see how difficult it is. there are so many questions on this site about dual booting :/

5:30 PM

@SeverusTux hi :)

Hello @Anwar :) I see that you are member from 4 years but I did'nt see you much around here ...
