Hey, thanks... A question upvote would have been enough though.

i was more interested in the question you answered ;)

I hate to ask for that, but being so close to the epic limit and then failing because of 5 points or so is extremely annoying :)
As long as you mean it honestly, I'm fine with everything.
Now I can finally go to bed :-)
Good night.

night!

19 rep short of being able to VTC lol
let me flag it
i loled at the large icon askubuntu.com/questions/805361/…

12:45 AM
woah new powers acquired

@edwinksl with great power comes current squared times resistance . . . remember that . . .also , great responsibility . . . . ok, i'm done being corny

I^2R joke is never old though
i still hear it from time to time ;D
i just noticed SO has 6.8k questions in the CV queue

@CristianaNicolae this one: ubuntu.com/legal/terms-and-policies/contact-us - just leave out the (optional) boxes, and explain in the "describe in more detail" there is a company that is using the ubuntu trademarks, but they are not installing via OEM and all the stuff you were saying here

6.8 k ? Jeezums . . . .well, big site, bigger problems i guess

1:02 AM
that's not even the real size. They narrowed the queue down with special filters (like # of CVs) because it was so huge (40k) no one wanted to touch it.

lol
40k is an intimidating number

@CristianaNicolae good read if you are confused: blog.dustinkirkland.com/2015/07/…

gosh, my eyes need some rest
i have spend basically half the day working on that bookmark script and whatever else, then other half researching what other Nautilus questions i can pick up

nope, you should code moar

if i could clone myself , i would code more. I'd take down so many questions from my list

1:09 AM
can anyone quite make sense of what he's asking?

Q: Ubuntu KVM VM - Change IP address?

csharpnoobieI have a dedicated server with 5 usable ip addresses, now what I want to do is run a different ip address to the one that is assigned on my dedicated server on my kvm vm. what network source do I use? I'm currently on NAT and how do I config it all via console?

@Serg git clone serg?
@Seth nope i can't parse what OP is saying

@CristianaNicolae not necessarily to need a install disk or usb- but there is a way to install the os in "oem" mode, which lets them install some drivers if the computer needs it - then sell it, once you get it and turn it on, it should go through a new user setup letting you enter you own username and password - it is a new computer mode

@edwinksl wrong repository , choose one form here gist.github.com/SergKolo

please add repo for source code that makes serg

sure, let me just run my dna test . . .

1:15 AM
thing is, one day, it may indeed be easy as git clone serg to actually clone serg

Who knows, it could be. I mean, we have evie bot, and boy bot, and pewdiepie bot already . Maybe one day the world will see serg bot

hopefully a serg bot with the corny jokes patched out ;)

@Zacharee1 would love that ^

wat
im trying to sleep

oh hi zach

1:25 AM
this is why you turn all your devices off at night :P

It's not even night in the US, just evening, and on the east-coast it's just what, 9:30 ?

that's night.

OK . . . in my definition night is after 11 or 12 . . . .9 or 10 is like late evening

@Serg - good evening !

1:40 AM
@Serg 12 is morning

I upgraded to Ubuntu 16.04 but now again x Windows is hung

@gansub evening

hello @Zacharee1

@Seth Insomnia makes it so I can't sleep unless I have something to concentrate on, like a video
otherwise I start thinking

gansubI am running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Today when I logged into my computer I got an update alert saying that I could upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. The other options were not now or do not upgrade. If I chose to upgrade will it delete my /home directories and the installed software under /opt and /usr/loc...

1:41 AM
@gansub any errors from command line ?

this si what I did

about aneurysms, blindness from headaches, etc

@Serg I tried sudo service lightdm restart
and also the command you taught me
sudo service startx $(which unity) both failed

did the last one show any errors ?

yes
hang on let me start and tell you what theya re
@Serg I am logged in
it says OK Started GNOME display manager
i typed sudo service startx $(which unity)

1:45 AM
ok, gdm started. That's good . . .Except it doesn't show up , right ?

and it says startx: unrecognized service
this is 16.04
so is it still unity or somethin else?

yeah, 16.04 is still unity . it's kind of default so it wont change any time soon

so how to fix the display problem?

magix

hmmm, give me a moment

1:47 AM
(see: reinstall)

magix ?

magic

no I mean what command should i type ?

Zacharee is just joking

@Zacharee1 - you help me with this problem and I will take care of your insomnia

1:49 AM
is that a threat?
:p

no it is a cure

@gansub how about sudo startx or just startx by itself ?

@Serg that does return but I got a whole bunch of messages

ok
anything that stands out ?

waiting for X server to shutdown (II) server terminated successfully
Using system config directory usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d
no error message in particular
just shuts down
same message when i type startx
when I type echo $DISPLAY I get blank

Q: Unity doesn't load, no Launcher, no Dash appears

JamesWhen I login, nothing happens. I am presented with my desktop wallpaper. No Dash, no Launcher, nothing.

i do not see any error message in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

2:01 AM
hmmm , i don't have any ideas so far . . .

should I check to see if the intel graphics card is installed or not ?
i mean the drivers

yeah, let's do that

command ?

sudo dpkg --get-selections | grep intel
I hate these stupid people with their fireworks . . . .

i see four drivers
intel-gpu-tools install
libdrm-intel1:amd64 install
libdrm-intel1:i386 install
xserver-xorg-videoi-intel install

2:04 AM
that's normal . . .same as me
( I also have Intel GPU by the way )

ok now what ?

right now - no idea

should I ask the question on AU ?

@gansub yeah, probably better ask a question, maybe someone has an idea

2:16 AM
kindly edit if you feel like it needs more detail

@NathanOsman ever seen this one ? iasptk.com/ask-ubuntu-greatest-hits
@edwinksl ^

@Serg now something new
when I type ps -ef | grep lightdm
there is no process

@Serg is that a clone of AU?

so i type sudo service lightdm restart

user image
2
The one on the right still may need some work.

2:24 AM
and I get Job for lightdm.service failed because the control process exited with error code

@NathanOsman Bravo >.>

See "systemctl status lightdm.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details

@RPiAwesomeness you missed the announcement :D
21 hours ago, by Nathan Osman
Anyone want to talk me out of turning George into a webcomic?
2

@gansub you are using gdm so you cannot use lightdm at the same time, therefore no process. You can try to do this : sudo service gdm stop && sudo service lightdm restart

@Serg no no
I do not have gdm anymore

2:25 AM
@edwinksl not a clone, some website just has links to some of top rated AU posts

remember this is a clean upgrade to 16.04

@Serg ah but the native link is askubuntu.com/questions/greatest-hits

oh , right

so i type systemctl status lightdm.service

@edwinksl that one has 1000 posts, the link i copied only has a few there . . . nah, not a clone, but still interesting

2:26 AM
@NathanOsman o_O

@gansub have you tried checking the symlinks to files like you did last time ?

yeah seems to be a short(er)list of the link i posted

Well, I know I would read it :D

hmmm you mean for the intel

yeah

2:27 AM
but there is no error message
the .so files are present in the /usr/lib64

ok , that's good

i sure hope i wont have to roll back to 14.04 LTS again

TIL amazon links on SE sites are affililate links

what is the command to reinstall the ubuntu desktop ?

2:42 AM
sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop

@Serg you nailed it !
now I get an error !
the ubuntu desktop has not been installed !
apt-get: relocation error :
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libapt-pkg-so.5.0

I get the same error when i type apt
is it possible to download from a ttyl terminal ?

3:01 AM
dumba$$ people with their fireworks. Do they even realize that all those loud bangs are not only disturbing neighbors, but also potentially trigger PTSD in veterans ???
I can't find enough curse words for this

@Serg is there even a special occasion for them releasing fireworks

None

@gansub yeah, use wget?

ok use wget

wget is for some kind of url on the web , like wget foobar.com/file.png

3:04 AM
@Serg ok

probably not gonna do you any good

but in this case how to fix this problem of libstd
will the ppa-purge fix it ?
@SagarJha is saying that wget worked for him
To install the .deb file, run the following command on terminal: wget http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/g/gcc-5/libstdc++6_5.3.1-14ubuntu2.1‌_amd64.deb. The link is for 64-bit ubuntu. If you have a 32-bit instead, replace amd64 by i386 in the link. You can also open the link in the browser, if that is possible.
downloaded it
when i do dpkg -i deb
it says file is not a debian format archive

Q: Bash script have problems depending on desktop environment. How to fix this?

Murcio FilhoSystem: Ubuntu 16.04.1 Xenial Xerus Hi, I'm having a strange problem with my bash script used to control the GPU fan speed. @gansub you are supposed to do : sudo dpkg -i libstdc++6_5.3.1-14ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb
full name of the file
or just do this
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

@Serg same error message

@gansub ok , what was the exact wget command that you ran ?

sudo dpkg -i *.deb
hang on sorry

3:24 AM
@Serg now I get a different message
error processing mapckage
libstdc++ is at a different version
i think i need the i386 version as well ?
Errors were encountered while processing

you have 64 bit OS right ?

yes

so you dont need i386

ok

probably that library has newer version . . .

3:27 AM
now the error messasge with apt is gone
now i get a blue screen when i type startx
with an arrow on it
sorry with cross in it

it's working
try restarting lightdm

yet to get ubuntu desktop
it is hanging
so switch off and restarting
hangs after the initial ubuntu logo :(

at least some progress
you may want to edit your question
to include this info

10k rep in SO but still posts windows question in AU, wth? askubuntu.com/q/805525/15003

@edwinksl may be didn't notice the site!! though very unlikely

he should have known better; he is obviously not new to SE at all

hmm.. in SO. but not experienced much on other SE sites I see

7:42 AM
@edwinksl - any suggestions ?
i am kind of hosed in at the moment

@gansub no
is this an upgrade or a clean install?

@edwinksl - upgrade
@AnwarShah - how about you ?
any suggestions ?

if you have spent hours on it, i will just recommend backing up and doing a clean install
you have spent too much time already

yea yea i hear you
the thing is if i do a clean install i got at least 100 software to install
on /usr/local
that is why ia m holding back

@gansub I'm experienced enough to see the difference, i believe

7:45 AM
chances are you don't need all 100

@AnwarShah - can you answer my question ?

I see... I missed the tread. I didn't see you question up in the chat. checking ...

@edwinksl - it is the intel compiler i am worried about

it seems, the upgrade remove the x server. It happened to me once

@gansub what intel compiler? or do you mean gcc?

7:48 AM
@edwinksl my 100 software(i am in GIS) are compiled with Intel compiler icc and icpc
if i do a clean install

do you have xserver-xorg installed? check with dpkg -l xserver-xorg @gansub

i will have to reinstall all of those

oh okay that's a valid concern then
i don't use them, so i can't help there

@edwinksl I wondered why I had absolutely no clue what that 'mlink' question was talking about haha I know nothing about windows

@AnwarShah - what should it say ?

7:50 AM
@Zanna in my previous life i had used mklink in windows :P
but really the backslashes are a dead giveaway too

I was like "why are there backslashes in this command???"

it should draw a like something like this
+++-===========================-==================-==================-============================================================
ii  xserver-xorg                1:7.7+13ubuntu3    amd64              X.Org X server
@gansub ^

<--- noob

@AnwarShah yea it does say that

@Zanna sounds like you are blissfully unaware of the world of windows :D

7:53 AM
@gansub send the output of dpkg --list | grep xserver | cut -f 3 -d ' '

do you want me to post it here @AnwarShah

add to the question.

@edwinksl correct diagnosis :D

you have unmet dependencies ... did you use the suggested sudo apt-get -f install? @gansub

yes I did @AnwarShah

7:58 AM
what happened? can i see your sources.list and all of sources.list.d/* ?

What the error message tells us, this package `libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0:i386` is needed to be installed, but it depends on package `libstdc++6:i386` which should be version 4.1.1 or later, but that cannot be installed (either because 4.1.1 is not available, which is very unlikely, or somehow this package is marked to stick with another version)

same happened with python, python-all, python-all-dev packages

@AnwarShah yes I got that
how do I install it ?

8:08 AM
should we move to another room?
send the output of apt policy libstdc++6:i386

Morning

good morning byte :)

I see you're troubleshooting good old dependency issues... Does it work?

it works sometimes.
we moved to another room. i think I figured out the culprit
he installed a much higher version of libstdc++6 package

8:40 AM
that was pretty damn hilarious xD

@NathanOsman great :D

Q: Ubuntu home folder ecrypts after accessing with Windows

Stijncatand thanks for reading this already! I'm using Ubuntu 16.04 to work as a NAS, using Samba to share folders from /home/NAS/NAMEOFPERSON Everything works well, but for some reason, if I access the shared folders with Windows 7, the home folder ecrypts itself. (Note that I am a very new to Linux)...

@ByteCommander I just voted on your proposed permissions - privileges synonym, as I now have enough points on the tag ^_^

y u so many repz

\o/ Thanks
It's around long enough by now.

9:35 AM
seem to have lost my mojo actually, not much happening the last few days
my lucky streak ran out
now the synonym just needs one more vote

@Zanna My mojo also is running a little low......
I blame poor questions :)

so it's not just me? this weekend the questions are mostly no fun? and nobody ever accepts!!

Mind you I had a look at long term AU users with high reps: it always seesm to come and go in waves
"You are only coming through in waves" = a reference for the older people in the room :)
And more commonly a high rep AU user has a big burst and then coasts on this burst for many years

@Zanna I have no idea what systemctl even is :)
My day to day work is done on SLackware which famously has abstained from systemd...

9:55 AM
@edwinksl unless they are running Linux, as we've already established today, I will be of no use to them
However, Iranians are very hospitable, and they may well invite me to partake if I just go and say hi...
@andrew.46 I have become a friend of systemd, though is does make pstree look a bit scary

@Zanna ask them for the recipe. Always works with my mom.

@JourneymanGeek holy moly that's actually solid advice

@JourneymanGeek I know how to make it, but it involves frying herbs for six hours

@edwinksl always trust a dog in matters of food cadging.
