Basically , a movie made with whole bunch of stars and for the 60th aniversary ( or 65th ? ) of the formation of PRC
Em . . . what else . . ."Farewell my concubine" is also good

Q: Is the Ask Ubuntu community generally more friendly than stack overflow - why?

user3728501This is not a rant! These are my initial thoughts in a discussion which I'm hoping other people will want to engage with. I want to hear your opinions on the following questions which I put to you. I have been using stack overflow and ask Ubuntu on and off for a few years now. I used to use stac...

SethOne way to check if getty has been corrupted (of which we are already pretty sure) is to check it's md5sum against the md5sum of an uncorrupted getty. For this we need live media. Boot a liveCD (or DVD, USB, SD, or whatever). Click "Try Ubuntu". Once the desktop loads you will need to mount th...

It got an upvote and so I was re-reading it and I was like:

yeah, happens time to time. When I have one of my answers from before upvoted , i am like "I bet i would approach this differently today"

same feeling as when i read my old code xD

@edwinksl hahahaha, yes xD

@Seth i think i might choose to burninate my old code than read them and cringe :D

Python lists it as '7. Input and Output \xe2\x80\x94 Python 3.5.2 documentation_files'

2:28 AM
@NathanOsman you're resistance in ingress right?

Correct.

2:56 AM
o-O
good thing Meta doesn't affect rep

@NathanOsman and @edwinksl do you guys have json library for python ? did it come by default ?

yeah i have it

@Serg Python 2.6+ ships with one built-in.

$ python3 -c 'import json; print(json.__version__)'
2.0.9

nice

2:59 AM
So you don't need a third-party library.

the only thing that python doesn't have in the standard library is cure for cancer

from __future__ import cure_for_cancer

$ python3 -c 'import cure_for_cancer'
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<string>", line 1, in <module>
ImportError: No module named 'cure_for_cancer'

@edwinksl it's probably reserved for python 4.5
;)

it would probably take 50 years for devs to move from python 3 to python 4...

3:05 AM
Yup.

Rome wasn't built in a day
And neither was python
And neither will be my new indicator.

@Serg import antigravity
that was actually implemented ^

ugh
my neighbors are playing rap really loud out of their car again.
don't they understand it's hot out and people have their windows open?
enter fan + noise cancelling headphones.
my word I'm an idiot.
might help if I actually import the library I'm trying to use -.-
oh wait, I did, I did. ok..

3:31 AM
@Seth I don't understand people who play music loudly , to the point where windows are shaking. Sure, it's their hearing and they can destroy it however they want, but it's annoying to others. People are stooped nowadays on multiple levels

yeah..

If I pydoc antigravity , it redirects me to xkcd, lol

sometimes git can be so infuriating.

what's happening this time ?

it's probably me mostly not being a git guru

3:41 AM
Eh, nobody is git guru except Linus himself

I really need to set git up to use ssh

4:07 AM
What is this.
I never signed up for this.
Never even heard of it.

Looks like a scam to me.

its a scam @NathanOsman

I reported it to MyWOT.

I have a feeling i may need skype . . .
sigh . . . here we go

4:42 AM
Why doesn't my Mate VM have gcc ??? O_o
I thought it comes preinstalled by default

GCC is rarely preinstalled.

average n00b doesn't need gcc i guess

5:01 AM
But they all have Perl.
:D

any mods here?
I wanted to start bounty on this askubuntu.com/questions/62729/how-do-i-set-up-a-service but to my bad, started on this one instead askubuntu.com/questions/803735/tightvncserver-autostart-boot
can anyone fix the bounty?

i think a mod can fix it but i haven't seen a mod in the past hour or so
you probably have to wait a bit

5:19 AM
I don't think mods can fix bounties like that.

so dark magic isn't that dark after all :D

@NathanOsman can they refund bounties ? I think they can
Meanwhile, I am confuzzd as to why my drag_n_drop isn't working for Mate VM , even though i have guest additions installed

Neither site that I'm a moderator on has an active bounty right now.
Otherwise, I could find out for you.

OK . . .that's KO . . .
Skype for Linux alpha successfully installed on my Mate VM
time to figure out what the heck is my skype password

the one from yesterday? xD

5:45 AM
whatever it was, i've reset it now
Well , skype installed quite well, i'm actually surprised there's no dependencies for it or anything like that. Was Seth right when he said it's just a web-wrapper ? O_o
Also . . . I need to allow my VM use microphone and webcam somehow

Anyone want to talk me out of turning George into a webcomic?

Hello, George. You seem to be . . . naked . . .without sweater . . .

@CodeX you might want to edit your post to turn it into a link. The mods might not like F-bombs :D

6:56 AM
@Serg that's weird... gcc was definitely preinstalled in my MATE

@CodeX You just got flagged.

@Zanna may have been because it's VM. I had to install the build-essentials to get guest additions working . . . still Drag n Drop doesn't work

:O codex got flagged

>_<

7:10 AM
I dont see option to delete .. what does flagged means ?

@CodeX someone reported your message

come on people, a little f-bomb never harms anyone, chill out

7:29 AM
@AnwarShah I refunded your bounty. Next time, just flag the post with a custom flag. You're more likely to get a mod to see it that way.

7:43 AM
@terdon sorry for extra ping, i'll keep in mind flagging next time

im sleepy

@terdon Thank you. I'll do. glad to be part of some black magic :)

done

any mods want to slam the hammer ?

8:03 AM
@Serg nothing wrong with pinging, that's something that only a mod can do. It's just that flags work better since they're seen by all mods. I'm on holiday with patchy Internet access and only saw your ping by chance.

mods have holidays? that's news to me

@terdon we dont care about your holiday >:-D

hi all!

hello :)

alright people here we go askubuntu.com/questions/805170/…

step-by-step guide:
#1 build a time machine
#2 go back to the day before yesterday
#3 RTFM
?

i like this guide
i suppose OP doesn't care about the data on it, so perhaps OP did the evil command for fun

9:44 AM
Are questions that boil down to 'I have problem X and I expect you to write a shell script to solve it' on topic?
I'd be tempted to downvote this, to say the least askubuntu.com/q/805176/530811

i think it is on-topic but i am not 100% sure what OP is asking for

On SO, questions without a clear problem statement are off-topic @edwinksl
I'm not saying we should do everything the same way, but that was my motivation

wouldn't they be either flagged as unclear or, more commonly, downvoted?

I did both
"I sometimes use language", hey, me too!

so it is still on-topic, just unclear and lacks effort

9:53 AM
Flag and downvote and carry on :)
Did I translate this error message correctly? askubuntu.com/q/805178/530811

YumYumYumLinux is well known hackers box, but i am surprise i cant find a single tool for linux to use stock exchange trading softwares (robot, automated rules, doing forex stuff) Can anyone please advise?

11:01 AM
@ParanoidPanda Morning! I don't know, they don't talk about a new album on their website yet. Only the Metal Mass 7h DVD will soon come out. powerwolf.net

user136984
@ByteCommander: Well, will have to have a look at that then!

user136984
And morning to you too. ;)

That DVD seems to contain 3 or 4 full live concerts plus some tour documentation.
Oh, and it already got released last Friday!

user136984
@ByteCommander: Will have to have a look at that then! How much is it?

Dunno, there are various different formats. E.g. a nice big earbook with 2 DVDs and 1 CD that is limited to 1000 pieces.
You would have to hurry to get one as they were released last Friday, I think.
That limited edition will be 50€
I own this one since last summer, I got the very first one of my local shop. The employee was just about to put it onto the shelf and I grabbed it right away. :D emp.de/art_312791

so you know that password prank where people say "put in your password and chat filters it out: ********"
and then people do it and accidentally share their passwords?

^yup

someone did it in a Minecraft chat for social security numbers
and it worked
there were like 5 numbers shared

this chat's music preferences are way above average

This T-shirt does also look nice:
Back side is "Army of the night" emp.de/art_335341
And all the artworks are made by themselves, IIRC it's done by one of the Greywolf brothers, just don't remember which one. No external design office.

Q: Ububtu 16.04LTS got stuck in a login loop

AkshayI'm working on Ubuntu 16.04LTS Desktop. After entering my login details, the screen gets black and I am again shown the login screen. I'm perfectly sure that there's no invalidation in my login details. I've tried many possible solutions that I could from an another similar post: http://askubuntu...

@ParanoidPanda How do you want to view the SQLite database, what do you want to do with it? And GUI or CLI?

user136984
@ByteCommander: It seems as though my Firefox search history is stored among other things in a file in that format, I just want to properly be able to view the contents. CLI will do.

GUI will be easier...

user136984
12:10 PM
@ByteCommander: Ok, I don't really mind too much.

@ParanoidPanda sqlitebrowser

@ParanoidPanda Posted an answer describing both the basics of sqlbrowser (GUI) and sqlite3 (CLI) askubuntu.com/a/805235/367990
What about a nice bounty to reward the effort? ;-)

@ParanoidPanda how do I get Anthy input method ?

@Serg: What's your DE?

user136984
If you install Japanese it should come with it, depending on which version of Ubuntu you are using.

user136984
It's not installed on some DEs with 16.04, you could just try installing the anthy package.

user136984
I have to go now, but ping me and let me know how it goes. :)

@ByteCommander About this askubuntu.com/a/805247/295286 File selection dialog is separate from Nautilus. The date in nautilus doesn't change. But it does change zenity --file-selection dialog
Those two guys are not related

@Serg But the show-hidden-files setting of Nautilus is overridden by the file-choser one.

@ByteCommander what's the gsettings schema ?
@ByteCommander nautilus has its own for that by the way org.gnome.nautilus.preferences show-hidden-files false I don't see how that can be overriden by FileChooser

from dconf-editor

2:17 PM
@ByteCommander been toggling "Show Hidden Files" in nautilus for the past 5 minutes. Neither schema has changed its values

@NathanOsman TuxHunter is here uappexplorer.com/app/tuxhunter.mateo-salta

@ByteCommander wrote a script for that. Will be posting answer shortly :D

@ByteCommander very nice :)

Ah, carp . . .
OP wants it in columns . . .

Hello ubuntian people!

\o hello

3:05 PM
I now have a brand new laptop. In fact, I am writing from it. Dell Inspiron 3551 with Ubuntu preinstalled on it. But before logging on, I had to do some hocus-pocus to change the default password. "Of course", the sells men haven't told me anything about its existence, and "of course" again, none of the passwords mentioned on web as being the default password worked in my case.
Now, I may be a newbye, but I did managed to solve the problem; but, I ask: what about others? What a complete newbye can do?! Sit in front of the locked screen and shout: "Wilmaaa!" ?! What if this is his first time when he "meets" Ubuntu? What if this is the first time when he learns about Linux? What does he learns? That Linux is some kind of weird OS who sells you the house but keeps the keys to itself?!
Of course, that buyer can ask a friend for help (if he is fortunate enough to have a friend knowledgeable in Linux), but you know what he will ask? "Get this this ugliness down and replace it with a real OS!" And I don't think I have to translate to you what "real OS" means to him.
The point is, if Ubuntu is a distro meant to be user-friendly and to attract Windows users towards Linux world, then why in the God's name, are these first essential steps, these first psychologically important moments of meeting , made to be so stressing, difficult and bitter for the complete newbie?!

@CristianaNicolae that's the seller's fault - they've installed Ubuntu, hence should have provided default username and password. It has nothing to do with Ubuntu or any other distro.
2
OS itself is newbie-friendly enough. I mean, look at me - I survived up to now, has been 2 years or so already

lol
its definately a lot esier than it used to be.
@CristianaNicolae they messed up - they should have done an OEM install and let you set it up
2
its no different from a windows or even android phone

@heemayl please don't recommend other sites unless you know for sure they will take the question (or add some kind of disclaimer). I don't think either of those two will want that question, but I will try. (askubuntu.com/questions/804966/…)

4:19 PM
@Serg if you are working in Unicode use Unicode strings instead. I haven't had to work with foreign file names yet so I can't give any better advice unfortunstely
so wait for Nathan

@Seth Right, wasn't sure. Thanks for the heads up Seth.

4:49 PM
@Serg @JourneymanGeek Thanks for your reply! I know that Ubuntu is user-friendly. And I've started learning Ubuntu about 3 years ago. And I like it. But there are a lot of Windows users around me, and when I try to evangelize Linux to them, I get all kinds of sceptic replies. Last thing I want to is to hear someone saying: " I bought a laptop with Ubuntu on it and I couldn't used it! That's it! This Linux you so glorify is just a nonsense!"
Of course, I can reply that it is only salesman's fault, but, I guess that you can easily imagine their argument: "What?! Salesman of Flanco? Such big store with expertise and they don't know what and when to tell you?! Give me a break! That's Ubuntu's fault! Look! I've been looking for solutions online - none of them worked! etc, etc" I can't beat an angry user.
I prefer it better to install it myself, anyway.

Found a bug in OxygenOS 3.2.2.
Despite having the alert slider set to "no notifications", it forgets the setting and beeps in my pocket anyway.

OxygenOS is for mobiles? @NathanOsman

Yes, for OnePlus phones.

That bug is very dangerous. How are you ever supposed to get anything done if you can't turn off notifications?!

lol
@NathanOsman With Cyanogenmod's fate hanging in the air, is OxygenOS good enough that I should try harder to get a OnePlus?

5:03 PM
Er mobile, I tried to edit
if they aren't doing the OEM install they are doing it wrong and they are doing a diservice to ubuntu and their name report them here ubuntu.com/legal/terms-and-policies/…

@Seth It's basically vanilla Android with a few extra settings.
Not really all that much is different.

@Mateo - I had no idea that what they're doing is illegal. This is not the first laptop having this kind of problem. Last year I think, a friend of mine bought a laptop with Ubuntu 14.04 on it. He was unable to use it and he kept asking me to install an OS on the device. I had to explain to him that the laptop does have an OS but it is passworded. He then had to make a call to the shop to ask them the password. And the password was communicated via phone. You can imagine what followed!
I had to make several different attempts changing capslock key in all the possible ways.

@Mateo Yeah, even the LiveCD can do an OEM install.

And at the end, I still had to change the password in the "ugly way."

5:19 PM
Are these second hand computers?
used/previous owners

@NathanOsman Well, I got no liveCD from them. In fact, this laptop doesn't even have such thing. I can use only USB sticks on it.
And I know that it is good to have a stick with the exact version of the distro you've installed.

Anyway you should avoid this place, who knows what the installed or changed.

here's a challenge for you folks.... how much do you think this shirt goes for? cache.mrporter.com/images/products/651902/651902_mrp_in_l.jpg
don't cheat :)

@Mateo No, my actual laptop is not a second-hand one. Although I had in mind this option. In the end, I opted for this one because it is new and had two years warranty. While second-hand laptops don't have always a warranty. And if you simply buy an used on from its previous owner, you may find yourself in nasty situations. Laptop can break exactly when you're... broke!

@Chan-HoSuh $895.00

5:28 PM
350 ;) I cheated

@CodeX that's clearly a different one :D
@Mateo is correct, but he cheated ...

oops

5:30 PM
it's soldout too

That is obscene.

yeah but it exist xD

@CristianaNicolae at this point it dosnt sound like you can trust them to honor any warranty, if they cant even set it up proper how can they tell a hardware problem from software

what I still find amusing although I know it's so common now as to not bear mentioning, but that 895 t-shirt is described as having the "effortless, laid-back appeal of a well-worn favourite"...
but it doesn't look old enough to really look like a well-worn shirt like one in my closet... so basically you see a guy with a really worn-out but still new looking shirt and it's like a signal, hey I spent a lot of money to get a shirt that looks worn

Don't you guys hate it when your script works like 10 minutes ago, you commit it to git, and then . . . it doesn't work . . .

5:40 PM
never happens to me man, could never live down the shame and all the sneering and finger-pointing :p

People have money to waste .. look at yo app and the app that says I am rich xD

there's an app for saying you're rich?

there was in apple's app store

yeah, reading about it now... man, what a good idea :)

I Am Rich is an iOS application which was formerly distributed using the App Store, and developed by Armin Heinrich. When launched, the screen only contains a glowing red gem and an icon that, when pressed, displays the following mantra in large text: I am rich I deserv [sic] it I am good, healthy & successful The application is described as "a work of art with no hidden function at all", with its only purpose being to show other people that they were able to afford it, making it a Veblen good. I Am Rich was sold on the App Store for US$999.99, €799.99, and £599.99, the highest price Apple allows...

@NeosFox broadcom wireless card. There are a few people capable of troubleshooting these, but IMHO it's easier if you get rid of it, and get yourself astheros or realtek card. Those are always well supported and work mostly out of the box

@serg

@NeosFox not familiar with this issue, but there's a lengthy posting here: askubuntu.com/questions/55868/…
@NeosFox take a look at this one in particular: askubuntu.com/a/126798/43660

@Serg Can you give me some link to download driver as I don't have internet on ubuntu Pc ?

@Mateo Well, this is not the first laptop I buy from that shop. But the first one was, in fact an Asus EEE netbook, had no actual OS on it, (just freeDos), and I had to make the installation myself. I was pleased with that. I had the chance to learn how to do this process on newer PC and I also kept the live stick with the original version. So, when I had any major problem with my OS, I just used my USB stick to fix it.

@Chan-HoSuh I already tried both, it's not solved my problem

I am no expert but what if he tries previous kernel versions

@Mateo But this time, Ubuntu was preinstalled, so I should have received the installation CD which didn't happened. Anyway, it would have been useless as my laptop doesn't have any DVD writer on it.
@Mateo So, I should have been given an USB stick then. But, this is where I think they turned Scrooge, because, you see, nowadays a CD is cheap while an USB stick is quite expensive. And can be reused. So, instead of giving me a free USB stick (functioning as install stick), they preferred to "forget" about it and keep silence about it.
