Q: [Solved]Passwords not recognized after install of Ubuntu server 16.04 x64

StefaanCIt is a bit ridiculous. I just installed Ubuntu server 16.04, the install was fine, I entered a user password and root password. But right AFTER reboot I can't login. Not as user, not as root. Okay perhaps wrong keyboard layout but no verified the passwords by entering these for the login name....

Soooo , all documentation is submitted. Now . . .hope i get visa and then . . . .
IM GOING TO CHINA ! ! ! ! !

@Serg: To see the Pandas and your imaginary girlfriend? :P

@ParanoidPanda yash

user136984
You say "mash", "mush", and now "yash", is your brain just really mushy at the moment? :D

user136984
8:16 PM
You been eating too much mashed potato? :P

No, i just speak like a cute ewok

user136984
A what? :D

Those cute bear creatures from Star Wars

user136984
Oh right... :D

user136984
They are so Kawaii! :D

8:18 PM
超级可爱

@Serg Starred!
Visiting your GF??? (or is she at least coming over to where you are???)
Can someone help me with this:

user136984
@Serg: 可愛い :P

sudo apt-cache policy owncloud-client | more
owncloud-client:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: 2.1.1+dfsg-1ubuntu1
Version table:
2.1.1+dfsg-1ubuntu1 500
500 http://ubuntu-archive.mirror.nucleus.be xenial/universe amd64 Packag
es
2.1.1-13.1 500
500 http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/isv:/ownCloud:/desktop:/qt
5deb/Ubuntu_16.04 Packages

user136984
So sharing one Kanji.

I want to install the second one...
What should I do? (put the first package on hold?)

user136984
8:20 PM
@Fabby: Which repo did you add?

user136984
And how did you add it?

opensuse OpenCloud repo

user136984
Well, if you added it through the standard means then just running sudo apt-get install owncloud-client should install it from there rather than the original repo.

nope, it doesn't: it wants to install the first one

user136984
How did you add the repo?

user136984
8:22 PM
Manually or through the interface?

sudo sh -c "echo 'deb download.opensuse.org/repositories/isv:/ownCloud:/desktop:/… /' >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/owncloud-client.list"
that way ---- ^

user136984
You should probably try adding it through the interface.

@Fabby she will be too far from my place, but she wants to mail me a gift there

@ParanoidPanda Doesn't work for xenial. The above is the only way.
@Serg Still nice...

user136984
You may just have to put the first package on hold... But the methods I said should work, or at least they do on 15.10.

8:23 PM
yes, they did there...
there is a ppa for 15.10
not for xenial.

user136984
Can't you add other repos through the interface?

Are you guessing just like me or have you done smth like that before?

user136984
I've done similar, but for PPAs.

mmmh, time to fire up aptitude...

@Fabby I asked that!
0
Q: Is there a way to install a package from a particular repository using apt?

SethSometimes a package I want from a PPA has the same name as a different package in another repository. Is there a way I can tell apt to download a package of packageName from a certain repo? I'd prefer to just use apt, but I suppose aptitude or some other tool would work okay. The simpler the bet...

user136984
8:25 PM
@Fabby: Doesn't the sudo apt-add-repository command work?

@Seth reading!
@ParanoidPanda nope.

user136984
Oh, is that only for PPAs then?

@ParanoidPanda yup.

user136984
Then they should change the name...

is there a maximum of reputation per where it gets capped ?

8:27 PM
@Videonauth yes. 200 per day.

@Videonauth 200/day

There's 200 max per day

however accept votes and bounties are exempted from the limit.

That ^

ah ok

8:28 PM
The extra upvotes will roll over to the next day, so you don't loose anything

ah ok :) cool
this is what i asked myself just now
xD

@Seth This should do it:
This won't control the version, but the source preference if both packages has the same version. If you need to assign highest priority for the same package version in your local repo, list them at the top to the /etc/apt/sources.list file>

glad it (sorta?) helped!

Nah, won't work: I've put it in a different file as I like to keep things separated...
mmmh... move it over and put above standard ubuntu packages? or have a look at aptitude again?

then try aptitude or pinning.

8:32 PM

think you meant that for @Fabby :)

well you can pin by repo and/or by version
btw i have as well a question, i found a pretty usefull awk line i would love to make an alias but i dont seem to get the quotes right
history | awk '{CMD[$2]++;count++;}END { for (a in CMD)print CMD[a] " " CMD[a]/count*100 "% " a;}' | grep -v "./" | column -c3 -s " " -t | sort -nr | nl | head -n10
tried already with backticks and with '

Make it a function not alias

mhmm ok that aswell could be a solution

Aliases are pain in the butt because of quoting
Functions are a bit better in that respect

8:40 PM
wont work either
# function to find the top commands
function tcd{
history | awk '{CMD[$2]++;count++;}END { for (a in CMD)print CMD[a] " " CMD[a]/count*100 "% " a;}' | grep -v "./" | column -c3 -s $
}
args

Ok, let me smoke, and i will see what i can do about it. Whats that supposed to achieve ? Delete ./ commands from history ?
@Videonauth

found it it missed th () after function tcd

user136984
@Serg She's Human though isn't she? She isn't big and fluffy with black and white patches all over her is she? :P

@ParanoidPanda no, she is a beautiful human female, not a panda at all :p

user136984
@Serg: No, you are mistaken about one thing, only Pandas and Totoros can be beautiful, not Humans. :P

8:52 PM
Heeey, we hoomans are boootiful twoooo

btw serg what i mean earlier was your gedit script introduced two functions which where sticking so har i had to reboot to get rid of them

user136984

and they messed up the autocompletion in terminal

user136984
@Serg: How can you be more beautiful than that? :P

user136984
My definition of beautiful = fat fluffy creatures. :P

user136984
8:54 PM
If you do not match that criteria then you are not that. :P

user136984
@HenryWhiteHatHacker: If you tell Totoro that he is beautiful he might help you. ;P

When I do:
Package: *
Pin: origin download.opensuse.org
Pin-priority: 700
it works, but I want to be extra careful and do:
Package: owncloud*
Pin: origin download.opensuse.org
Pin-priority: 700
but then it doesn't work, nor does:
Package: *
Pin: origin download.opensuse.org/repositories/isv:/ownCloud:/desktop:/qt5deb/Ubuntu_16.04
Pin-priority: 700
Any ideas? @Videonauth
@cl-netbox :P

@Fabby no clue tbh

OK, thanks anyway...
When I find the perfect solution I'll tell you.

@ParanoidPanda just look at my git profile. That's some one hot-a$$ sexy bearded hooman !!! Ancestor of the freakin vikings
@Fabby I have 3 questions for you , can you spare 10 minutes of your time ?

user136984
9:03 PM
@Serg: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And there are lots of fat and beautiful Totoros and Pandas living in my eyes (that's why I can't see anything else, they're too fat and blocking my view)! :P

@ParanoidPanda XD
yeah,i agree beauty is in the eyes, or whatever the beholder uses to think about the world . .

user136984
@SQuirel: This is Totoro if you don't already know of him.

...?

user136984
A famous Japanese animation.

9:14 PM
...

user136984
He is a tree spirit.

Yeah...

user136984
Unless you're talking about VIM? That's a text editor. :P

user136984
@SQuirel: You should really watch the film "My Neighbour Totoro" it really is a great film and good for all ages! ;)

......
My friendly text editor nano :)

user136984
9:16 PM
I know I sound a bit like an advert there, but it really is a good film. And is used as a symbol (Totoro) to protect natural only areas in Japan. :)

Protect nature???

user136984
@SQuirel: To stop people turning the area into concrete structures.

user136984
To preserve the nature.

...

@serg here a nice multi monitor question for you askubuntu.com/questions/766588/errors-when-adding-a-5th-monitor

9:18 PM
@Serg Yup

user136984
@SQuirel: Well, you know, to protect natural areas with beautiful nature that people want to deforest and turn into cities.

@ParanoidPanda What's wrong with cities?

@Serg We're still doing this?

user136984
You're telling me you would like the whole world to be covered in concrete rather than at least have some natural and beautiful areas?

user136984
Why do you think we have a CO2 problem? Not enough trees.

9:20 PM
That and too much city

@Zacharee1 well, I didn't start this, blame it on the SQL squirrel

We can have cities & trees

@ParanoidPanda You breathing and farting too much is the problem

user136984
@Fabby: No, that's the cows. :P

I'll come and hang you: less CO2 production!

9:20 PM
@Serg it's not so much who started it, but who decided it was best to draw it out :p
@Fabby that's methane...

@ParanoidPanda More humans then cows on this planet... ;-)

user136984
@SQuirel: Well, in a lot of cities the tree count is declining, and it's good to have forests rather than just a tree a block.

which is up to 80 times worse >:D

@Zacharee1 well, I'm just having fun with it. In reality , I'm very zen about text editors. It just pleases me to see SQL squirrel's reaction

The answer is towns @ParanoidPanda

9:21 PM
@Zacharee1 and methane is a worse greenhouse gas...
@Serg so what are your 3 questions?

@Serg carry on, Ukrainian Troll :p

(can I go for a smoke first?)

51 secs ago, by Zacharee1
which is up to 80 times worse >:D

@Fabby #1, do you know Motorolla 68000 assembly ?

user136984
I think people should live in harmony with nature. It would be nice if we had trees everywhere.

9:22 PM
@Serg 1. nope

@Fabby sure go smoke

@ParanoidPanda towns!

user136984
@SQuirel: And there are some very beautiful forests in Japan, it is good to protect them.

user136984
@Zacharee1: Yes, ones in trees.

You get the proximity and all that, and you get the tress and nature and space

user136984
9:23 PM
Now that would be nice.

Zach: Ah! I should start reading from the top before offering to kill all pandas! ;-)

@ParanoidPanda towns in trees?

user136984
Tree houses.

@Fabby read where that's from quickly

user136984
Networks of them, now that would be nice.

9:23 PM
@ParanoidPanda oh

They really should make ubuntu-chat for the terminal

That would be nice
@ParanoidPanda the suspension cables for bridges could be our internet and power cables :p

Has anyone suggested it in meta?

@SQuirel pretty sure there's a CLI web browser that can view at least the log for the room

I know

user136984
9:25 PM
@SQuirel: You can suggest it on Meta, but they'll probably reject it or say DIY.

But it would be awesome if I could chat using the terminal
I have to quit what i'm doing in order to bring up google-chrome

user136984
It would be also awesome if I could chat through a tree.

Why?

I'm pretty sure there is something like that already , stackexchange has git or something, but i never bothered to learn the details

user136984
@SQuirel: So that when I go and become a Zen monk in a forest I can still talk to you guys off course! ;P

9:29 PM
ok

G8

Should I update my photo here ?

yes.
I should update mine too.

Arg sorry about that everyone
something to file a bug on the tablet...

user136984
My favourite Totoro songs! :D

Somehow the input when connected to another screen was shifted, delete turned into enter...
Ah so you just nave to turn the screen back ad forth once so it figurez what is going on
yay
Keyboard and mouse on the screen, computer on the TV!

And now I am much more brighter and much more bearded
My beard grows with the Ubuntu experience

Looks like we're getting a 2GB image for Yakkety.

I like it @Serg!

9:40 PM
:D Thanks !

Arch is fun to install

@SQuirel Arch is very fun to install...
Manual setup at its best.

Aren't some of the programs outdated though?

@Serg whoa, new picture

@SQuirel I haven't found that to be the case.
It has the latest version of NitroShare, at least.
:)

9:45 PM
I remember having an outdated version of chrome and gnome

@Serg nice new picture!

Yup, and uploaded the same one on my github profile
^_^ thanks Nathan
This picture is also on my visa application , by the way

It is missing the red circles under your eyes though... :)

Those red circles started turning dark, from all the fatigue this semester , hehe

If I remember it just had a diffrent way thing were updated, so certain things would get updated more often
err autocorrect

9:47 PM
@Mateo I was wondering what you were trying to say
@Videonauth hey, you reached 2k! :D

Question : so writing to serial works if I do something like printf "\x61" > /dev/ttyUSB0 , but not if I read it cat < /dev/ttyUSB0 . What would be a possible issue ?'

@Serg maybe you need to use dog < /dev/ttyUSB0

@Zacharee1 :/ dog : unmet dependency - no bone

sudo apt-get install dog-extras-generic

python-dogtail , now that might work

9:55 PM
@Zacharee1 Huh?

<.< no joke , python-dogtail actually exists

@Fabby it was after I said cows produce methane :p
@Serg lol
install it

python-dogtail - GUI test tool and automation framework

lol, it's under /cat/

Not very useful for me right now , i don't do gui

9:56 PM
@Serg What were the other 3 questions?
@Zacharee1 Yes, you're as smart as me! *;-)

@Fabby I can write to serial port, can't read from it. Any ideas ?

can't

That's #2 question. #3 question . . . forget it , the first 2 are more important

@Serg erm, you can write/can't read or you can't write/can read???

6 mins ago, by Serg
Question : so writing to serial works if I do something like printf "\x61" > /dev/ttyUSB0 , but not if I read it cat < /dev/ttyUSB0 . What would be a possible issue ?'

9:57 PM
@Fabby can write , can't read

are you root?

No, but I'm in dialout group. /dev/ttyUSB0 belongs to dialout group

dialOUT...
try root first.
there is something attached to the port, right?
If yes, what?
(could be a device that only accepts writes to make it do stuff, but doesn't provide feed-back)

FRACK ! I don't have usb 2.0 O_O I only have this UART cable

wat

10:04 PM
Erm, did I upset you?

I have cable that doesn't work , the cable that works is at home

Q: Process login vs user login

Herbivores are good eating!

user136984
@Fabby: Only when I turn into a Wood Pigeon and go flying. :P

@ParanoidPanda How long a drive?

user136984
@Fabby: No idea, I don't have a very good sense of time.

:p

user136984
No idea how far it's to Scotland either. Nor to my local park for that matter. :P

user136984
Anyway, if @Fabby and I don't appear here to tomorrow that means that he came and attacked me with a flying Carrot and I fought back with a Cucumber and we have now been arrested. :P

@ParanoidPanda halfway in-between Heathrow and Scotland is too far away: you can sleep easily

user136984
10:13 PM
:D

(it's just that I brought Belgian chocolates for the office tomorrow and if you would be around here I'd drop by...)

user139252
Don't talk about vegetables, I'm hungry now

too far away anyway...
@TheBrownOne chicken, turkey, steak,

I'm off!

user139252
Now I'm extra hungry D:

user136984
10:14 PM
I think I'll go to bed now too! Goodnight all! ;)

@TheBrownOne I just had some surprisingly good stirfry, with sliced beef, broccoli, peppers and soy sauce >:D

user139252
I'm leaving, gonna go eat and nap. Thanks a lot :p

:)

10:36 PM
well somehow a maintainer script has found its way into a realeased deb package
and i think i messed up
well i think ill find out now going to do a reboot

what deb package we're talking about

if i would know this, i only know that i suddently had a file /usr/bin/cleanlinks (dont run it)
i now have chmod 600 that bugger
killed all dangling symlinks, luckily i did not run it as sudo
and it removed empty dirs aswell
i thought it is a real command script and typed cleanlinks --help to find out what it is but its a bash script which hasnt any option for printing help
and it removed all symlinks and empty directories in my home dir
