I hate the 20 votes per day limit! :P

it's 40
except for comments and chat stars.

@kos Sneakier what?

Then 40. I reached it anyway.
@Seth can you delete a comment for me, please? askubuntu.com/questions/725699/…
It's an exact duplicate of the one posted a few seconds later.
I tried the "official" way and flagged it as "obsolete", but that got declined.

37 rep to go!

9:12 PM
@Seth Thanks. maybe you could leave those who declined my flag a short note?

@ByteCommander next time use a custom flag.
it wasn't obvious what the problem was.

That would be an idea as well. But 2 exactly equal comments directly next to each other... :P

@ByteCommander the flag queue doesn't show that.

Oh!
How should I know...
Wouldn't it make more sense to show all comments and even the post below which they are?

you wouldn't. Pro tip: Make your flags obvious ;)
"obsolete" means "no longer relevant". If I just saw the 1 comment, would I think it is no longer relevant?

9:15 PM
Okay, I'll try to! :)

@ByteCommander lets just say the comment flag system is.. less than stellar.

Well, one of them is no longer relevant, because there's an exact clone of it.

we've also been swamped lately so people spend less time visiting the entire post if it looks clear cut.

So within the context, it would have fit.

@ByteCommander right, that's true, but it isn't obvious. 1 other flag is worth a 1000 standard flags sometimes :)

Q: Questions suddenly active

David ColeI love scrolling through the questions and answering and helping with as many as I can, but sometimes I'll run into a really old question. By really old I mean anywhere from 2-3 years old. What my question is, is why does the system keep these questions circulated. Most are un-answered, but after...

I have to agree.
Okay then, going to sleep. Seeya!

catch ya later @ByteCommander!

I just got an upvote on a pretty old question

user136984
@ByteCommander: Goodnight! :)

@ByteCommander good night!

user136984
Who is the package maintainer for qTox by the way and how do I contact them?

idk if you guys are doing it or if it's some sort of SE magic, but it works
It worked again o_O
But only 22 away!

oh man, the Piano Guys are going to be within driving distance in July, but I can't afford tickets :(

@Seth who?

user136984
9:28 PM
Watched Kung Fu Panda yesterday, and The Matrix just now! :D

@ParanoidPanda I still can't follow the plot in the beginning of the first Matrix

user136984
If I had Big Momma's House I would watch that tomorrow... :P

kos
Explaining the command above: it's not what it looks like, if you paste it in a terminal you can see what it really is, but really, avoid running it. Not my fault if you do that.

user136984
Ah, but maybe Some Like It Hot will do! :D

@ParanoidPanda Is is good?
@kos Unicode stuff?

user136984
9:29 PM
@Zacharee1: It depends on your sense of humour, I got banned from posting pictures of Big Momma here... :P

@ParanoidPanda lol
@kos Ahh, interesting
Is it because /var/ shortcuts back to root or something?

user136984
It's about a black cop who dresses up as 'Big Momma' a big fat black woman with a lot of attitude in order to go undercover, it's a good film, you should watch it! ;D

kos
To more serious businesses, who can / wants to review a PyGOBject script I wrote for 3 spare upvotes?

@Seth ah

kos
9:30 PM
@Zacharee1 Yup. Nathan Osman posted it the other day.

user136984
They made a few sequels actually which aren't that bad too...

user136984
It's a comedy.

@kos @kos If only I knew what that was
@ParanoidPanda Sounds 90s :p

user136984
@Zacharee1: Yeah, it was released in the year 2000, but it's a great film! :D

kos
Mainly I'd like to understand if that's a good design for OOP, since it's my first attempt to it.

9:32 PM
It's a bit like the Nutty Professor if you've seen that...

kos
@Zacharee1 Too bad then! :P

@ParanoidPanda Which one?

user136984
Reminds me, I need to buy that too! :D

That's why I like GNOME

user136984
@Zacharee1: You mean you haven't seen it or which of the films?

9:33 PM
@ParanoidPanda there are quite a few Nutty Profs
dropdown terminal, favorites in the top bar, applications/places menus, drive menu, workspace manager
Even a bottom panel if so desired

user136984
I don't know, I've only seen the first and the second, how many are there?

Almost as customizable as GNOME 2

user136984
It's basically that kind of humour and as good as the first.

@ParanoidPanda I don't mean series, I mean there are different makes and remakes

Hi guys. I bring mysteries. Well, one mystery. But it is extremely aggravating.

user136984
9:34 PM
Ah, I didn't know that...

@badp mystery away
Myst away? :p
Riven

kos
@Zacharee1 There, one for free since I like the answer!

user136984
I assume it was one of the latest...

It's the kind of mystery where you try and get stuff done (maybe right click on something, maybe open a menu, maybe open a window)

@kos :D

9:36 PM
and then the thing half-opens

user136984
It had that really famous actor in it... Whatever his name was... :P

and then the only sort of input your computer accepts is REISUB

user136984
Ah, Eddie Murphy...

if you move the mouse around the pointer moves, but not across monitors, and clicks don't register
keyboard? ctrl-alt-f1 does nothing. three finger salute does nothing (I turned it on).

9:37 PM
@badp Video drivers maybe?

user136984
@Zacharee1: I think that's the 1996 version then... What was the original like?

@ParanoidPanda I don't remember ;P

@kos logs? something about the input stack, let me see if I find something on google

user136984
I might watch it some time but I don't know if I really want to, the version I watched was so great! :D

I don't have them here, it's my work laptop, I just ragequit from the office at the fourth hard lock
I might have flipped a table or two on the way out

9:38 PM
@badp is it constant, or does it occur at random?

kos
@badp The fact that you have problems with both the mouse and the keyboard make me think of Xorg.

@kos "makes" is correct :p
oh wait
Well

@kos I wish I had a second computer to ssh in with so I could inspect the situation after the hang

kos
@Zacharee1 Changed the sentence in the meantime, and another ping to fix that would have been annoying ;)

@badp Have you looked at Xorg's logs? Maybe there's something in it.

This multiple times
[ 1912.503] [mi] EQ overflowing. Additional events will be discarded until existing events are processed.
[ 1912.503] [mi] These backtraces from mieqEnqueue may point to a culprit higher up the stack.
[ 1912.503] [mi] mieq is *NOT* the cause. It is a victim.
which I suppose are a byproduct of the previous window operation messing up
should I blame compiz

mieq getting defensive :p

I should blame compiz
ugh do I need to go through another tour of desktop environments last time I did this was exhausting unproductive and in the end I went back to unity and compiz
ctrl-alt-numpad OP please nerf

You can get MATE, which is GNOME 2.x for modern Ubuntu

but does it ctrl-alt-numpad or equivalent

9:44 PM
I'm not sure what that means

I rely on it heavily

kos
@badp Sounds like some sort of queue is flooded with events, and further events don't register... Are you using nouveau?

no intel
ctrl-alt-1 resizes a window in the lower left quarter of screen

Well it doesn't happen in GNOME 3

ctrl-alt-5 maximizes a window
yes they are unity combos

9:46 PM
I recommended that as a way to use the computer while you troubleshooted the Unity issue, if it stops happening without Unity

kos
@badp Hold on, that's what CTRL+Alt+1 is supposed to do. To switch to a tty you need CTRL+Alt+F1

@kos yes

Q: rsync can't update a folder that has no x permissions

UlukaiI have an rsync job running in one server that keeps folders in sync. The job is running as root in one server and transferred to a backup server as normal user. In the origin server one folder (weirdly enough) didn't have x permissions. On the origin server this wasn't a problem because it was...

@kos I'm only trying Ctrl-Alt-F1 after the hardlock

kos
9:50 PM
@badp Right, sorry, didn't read your conversation with Zacharee. You may try reinstalling the drivers. Sounds like this bug by the way: bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=680514

@kos last message from 13 months ago
probably need to uninstall some updates
maybe roll back to the previous kernel

What version of Ubuntu?

sorry for the very short replies there btw I was in a call
@Zacharee1 15.10

@badp upgrade to 15.10

user136984
That was strange, gnome-shell suddenly just crashed while I wasn't doing anything and then restarted...

9:53 PM
oh
@ParanoidPanda GOVERNMENT HAX

11pm, still haven't had dinner

@badp go and eat, then think about this further
So you're in the UK?

no

Where?

It's 10pm there
I'm in the NL

9:54 PM
@Fabby no
@badp ah

@badp it's nearly 23:00 there now!
@Zacharee1 YES!! :D

@badp I was just about to say "wo bist du" :p (and yes ik that's German)

user136984
Great, and now that problem reporting isn't responding... :P

1 min ago, by badp
11pm, still haven't had dinner

@Fabby NO
@ParanoidPanda happens a lot

9:55 PM
so does something like gnome 3 or gnome-shell or whatever it is you hip kids are using have at least the OPTION to make keybinds that let you resize a window into a quarter/half/fullscreen keyboard only
like I know KDE, customization heaven, does not

@badp well, GNOME 3 has Aero Snap keybindings
So SUPER+Arrowkey

user136984
@Zacharee1: What does? gnome-shell or the problem reporter?

@ParanoidPanda problem reporter

@ByteCommander You're trying to do a Terdon there???

user136984
Because neither happen to me very often... I make feature requests much more than I report problems.

9:56 PM
@Zacharee1 and by arrow key do you mean all four

@ParanoidPanda ;p

kos
@badp Last report is for Xorg 2:2.21.15-2+b2 on systemd though. Output of apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-intel?

@badp Kids?

@badp Yeah: SUPER+Left snaps to the left, SUPER+Right snaps to the right, SUPER+Down restores the window, SUPER+Up maximizes the window

How old are you?

9:57 PM
@Zacharee1 yeah that is not helpful in the slightest to me unfortunately

@badp you like quarter screen?

My monitors are arranged vertically so it is critical to snap to upper and lower halves rather

ah

@Fabby old inside enough to be unhip and still be using compiz

@badp you might be able to set them if they don't work: askubuntu.com/questions/116744/…

9:58 PM
@badp Ah late 20s...

@badp wait, derp, it DOES work on GNOME
I forgot to hold ALT

@Zacharee1 what does?

@badp the numpad shortcuts

ctrl-alt-numpad?

Yeah

9:59 PM
sweet. They are so so useful

@Zacharee1 :D :D :D Good one!

Got addicted to them immediately
so I guess tomorrow I'll try and use Gnome 3 instead
and see if this isn't Compiz fuckuppery
so long as I can juggle windows around with my keyboard like I'm used to I won't lose too much productivity I guess
(I'm sorry if you are now also addicted to them)

SUPER+Arrow is good enough for me :p

@kos reminder to self to look into this, too
but I'm fairly certain that it's integrated graphics

kos
@Zacharee1 The thing I like the most about GNOME is Super + Shift + PagUp / PagDown (though maybe that's on Unity as well, I don't remember)

10:04 PM
@kos move windows across screens?

@kos what's that do?
Oh, if it's that then I can't use it :p

kos
@badp Yeah, that's a possibility if you have a not too recent version of the drivers.

@kos it started suddenly and it's happening ~hourly so something must have changed today
@kos that's ctrl-shift-alt-arrow in Unity land (by default you have the good old 2×2 grid)
which, by the by, emulates the 2×2 grid I have in practice with my portrait monitors :)
(editor)(browser)
(email)(terminal)
I need to juggle things around when I dock or undock but otherwise I'm quite happy with my setup

kos
@badp Ah I thought it was there in fact. The grid is the thing I miss about Unity the most, on GNOME you get a stack (you can only go up and down), but OTOH the number of workspaces is not limited as far as I know.

yeah... I don't really dig the stack thing
neither vertical (gnome3) or horizontal (windows)
god multiple desktops in Windows are such a missed opportunity
you can make them from the keyboard (ctrl-win-d)
you can close them from the keyboard (ctrl-win-f4)
you can switch between them from the keyboard (ctrl-win-arrow)
moving windows from desktop to desktop requires the mouse

kos
10:11 PM
@badp Yeah me neither... though I'd have been happy with horizontal stacking more. The grid gave me the feeling my monitor was larger :D
Anyway up for dinner, BBL everyone o/

Q: How to quickly move current window to another task view / desktop in Windows 10?

BorekWindows 10 introduced a task view - the ability to have multiple virtual desktops. When I am in a window on Desktop1, what's the quickest way to move it to Desktop2? Currently, I need to enter the task switcher (icon in the taskbar or Win+Tab), find the window and drag&drop it between desktops. ...

user139252
@ParanoidPanda I'm turning into you(paranoid). I just enabled two-factor authorization for all sudo commands.

@TheBrownOne lemme check
@Seth I have no way of knowing if that's actually JS's fault :p

@Zacharee1 you'll have to trust me :p
I closed a tab and BAM, back to normal.

@Seth Like you trust JS :D
@TheBrownOne Ich kann verbinden

user139252
10:47 PM
Okay good. the nullok argument worked.

okee

user139252
If you want to enable two-factor log-in on your account, run google-authenticator after you SSH.

user139252
It will generate a QR code for you to scan with the Google Authenticator app

user139252
Then, whenever you want to log-in, you will use your password and the current verification code on your app.

user139252
It changes every 30 seconds.

user136984
10:49 PM
:D

user136984
Is there any way to get it to do that with a normal login rather than an SSH one?

user139252
Remove the dot-file created during the set-up process.

If it's alright with you, I'd prefer not to

user136984
Which dot-file?

user139252
.google-authenticator

user136984
10:51 PM
Right, how do you get google-authenticator?

user139252
@Zacharee1 You don't have to, it was just an "if you want to". Extra layer of security.

user139252
sudo apt-get install libpam-google-authenticator

user139252
You also have to edit two system files to enable it over SSH

user136984
And can you enable it for normal logins too and not just SSH?

user139252
In /etc/ssh/sshd_config, you need change the "ChallengeResponses" line from "no" to "yes"

user139252
10:52 PM
@ParanoidPanda Yep, it's just an extra file to modify.

user139252
In etc/pam.d/, there are several different files for different types of login

user139252
In each file, you need to add the line auth require pam_google_authenticator.so nullok

user139252
So, for system-wide log-ins, you edit /etc/pam.d/common-auth

user139252
for ssh only, /etc/pam.d/sshd

user136984
Cool! :D

user139252
10:54 PM
And to make every sudo request require two-factor, /etc/pam.d/sudo

user139252
Google Authenticator is opensource, available on GitHub and the Play Store, and I've rooted around for backdoors in the source and couldn't find any.

user139252
All it is a TOTP alg implementation, so there is absolutely no "phoning home" to the Google servers

user139252
Even if both devices are completely offline, your app will provide the current code.

user136984
Good to know! :)

it appears as if Windows 10 iot is borked...
