5:00 PM
Our electricity is incredibly reliable here.

user139252
@NathanOsman Are you attached to a UPS that might be having some issues?

Nope.

user139252
Were you doing a distribution upgrade that needed to do a few reboots?

Is the system Windows? :P

LOL

5:01 PM
@ThomasW. yes.

well there's your problem
updates are evil

user139252
Agreed.

and Windows likes to reboot you multiple times when you have a large # of updates
see it at the office all the time

That they are. I just leave my system on all the time

and in the 'off' state it can do that

user139252
5:02 PM
Yeah, it probably went through an upgrade

randomly. but it can.

I used hibernate in Windows.

user139252
then it upgraded that upgrade

@NathanOsman that's able to be interrupted

It should have stayed off.

5:02 PM
by a billion things

user139252
and then those upgrades downgraded to be compatible with the next upgrade

WoL comes to mind

Wake on LAN?

Here's where it got weird though.
When it starts up, the default in Grub is Ubuntu.
So I shut down Ubuntu and it powers off again.
And it still booted up by itself.

user139252
@nathanosman I'm going with haunted then

5:03 PM
WoL is enabled but only for magic packets.

@NathanOsman infected machine elsewhere sending them?

Very unlikely.
The network is secured and anyone outside the network would need to know the network adapter's MAC address.

@DonaldBrown I have not a clue about what names you gave those. I never heard of that game until now.
@NathanOsman Power cord or surge protector could be going bad. Check bios to see if resume on power failure is enabled.

Actually, come to think of it - I don't even think the router is configured to forward magic packets.
@Terrance yeah, but none of the other machines connected to the surge bar had problems.

@NathanOsman I have seen power cords go bad. What about the power supply? Does it feel hot when running? Well, hotter than normal?

5:09 PM
Not really, no - it's an expensive Corsair Bronze-certified PSU.
I think it may be related to some sort of ACPI timer waking the system.

It could be that as well.
I never have found a use for auto power on settings in a bios for a home user, but maybe at a business where you open at the same time everyday.

Yeah, I need WoL since I often need to access the PC on-the-go.

user139252
Yggdrasil is not a game D=

user139252
Norse mythology?

user139252
Poetic eda?

5:11 PM
What I usually do is SSH into one of the always-on machines and use it to send the packet to the PC.

@DonaldBrown Google listed it here: boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/71671/yggdrasil
@DonaldBrown Been a long time since schooling for me. Maybe I need to go back to feel like the old old old man in college. :)

user139252
Asgard, midgard, jotunheim, etc D=

@DonaldBrown Ahhhhh, Asgard. Thor, Loki, etc

user139252
The one I like SSHing into the most is svartelfheim

user139252
Then I feel evil.

5:15 PM
[ SmokeDetector ] Nested quote blocks in body: about its characteristics so here by jerrytellny on askubuntu.com

@DonaldBrown Silly me! I guess it helps if I am more awake.

user139252
We also have some Pis running Snappy. I'm think about making the students build arcade cabinets as a club project, but that's been done. What else could we do with Snappy?

jrg
@DonaldBrown Build them!
the reason I say build them is that while it's been done, it's still a challenge.
Particularly if they haven't done this kinda thing before.

user139252
Last semester they built "black boxes" out of them using wood I made them cut themselves and usb microphones.

user139252
Arcade cabinets could be a good next step.

user139252
5:30 PM
Neither of those projects, though, really used Snappy. They could have been done on any distro.

That would be an awesome next step!

user139252
I was looking for something that really used the Ubuntu core

We built an arcade cabinet at my old job when I worked for a game studio, and we put over 8,000 MAME games on it. Played extremely well. :D We used an old Metal Slug cabinet for it.

user139252
I work at a charter high school that's in the same parking lot as a Home Depot, so I always have them build everything out of wood :p

@DonaldBrown You should too! Maybe have them build one for a Raspberry Pi arcade cabinet.

user139252
5:35 PM
That's what we're doing. Most creative design gets a $50 gift card to Best Buy. But, as I said, I also want to get them into using the Snappy core so that we can get into Snappy app development. Focus more on software development than just building cool things.

@DonaldBrown That's really cool!
Good skills for them to have!

user139252
cough Any project ideas, then?

user139252
I'm stumped.

user139252
App development is hard to be original in.

Any time I think of any, there is always an app that has already been made. :( I have done TONS of scripting for servers to detect different hardware and RAID levels. Take snapshots of them. Break the array, scrub the drives, then re-create the arrays so the servers can be redeployed ready to be reimaged, reused, etc.

user139252
5:46 PM
I could have them make an app version of that Yggdrasil board game.

user139252
Then make it work on lan

user139252
So Svartelfheim can actually battle against Asgard!

user139252
Good idea, Terrance!

I think that sounds like a great idea for you Donald! Do it!!

jrg
6:42 PM
@DonaldBrown a better instagram kiosk.
I dunno. There's a bunch of different things you could do.

Put it on the line.
:)

jrg
So these high school students are going to be the most experienced snappy developers out there.

7:05 PM
heh

7:22 PM
I kind of want to see a drop target web file server - open webpage to snappy box and send/download files

[cough] NitroShare [/cough]

@DonaldBrown Ooo, yeah a browser game that multiple players play through LAN would be awesome
@NathanOsman yeah, you just need to make a snap, then do a web portal to send stuff back out, would be amazing

I'm frantically working on the IPC component now.
It's nearly complete but I'm debugging a possible Qt bug.
...on Windows :P

Oh, that and I would like to see a webcam streamer, the current webcam demo just takes snapshots
Which could make an easy diy boxcast
Oh, owncloud is on snappy on the pi now, extremely easy to setup

@Mateo: confirmed not delivered... :(

7:35 PM
So I've got an idea for Kickstarter.

Am I so wrong that this is a terrible answer???

A "selfie drone" - it hovers about 6 feet off the ground and follows you around, pointing its camera at you and snapping pictures when instructed.
Obviously it would need a sufficiently capable camera and battery, so making it airborne would be a bit difficult.
But these are all technical problems that we could solve, amirite?

@Fabby aw, almost

@Mateo :/ Is there anything you can verify from your side?

Interesting trying to interpret an Italian tracking page
I'll email you what I have, maybe it is the online system getting ahead of it's self - I once had the usps site say they were out for delivery - when in fact they just put it on the truck and didn't send the trucks out because of snow

Q: Why does writing to this socket discard the read buffer (and is that really what's happening)?

Nathan OsmanConsider the following snippet: QTcpServer server; server.listen(QHostAddress::LocalHost); QTcpSocket clientSocket; clientSocket.connectToHost(server.serverAddress(), server.serverPort()); // ...wait for connection to succeed... QTcpSocket *serverSocket = server.nextPendingConnection(); serve...

@A.B. yessir, landed yesterday at midnight, having coffee right now and waiting for my buddy to come over to hang out

@NathanOsman I used to be able to read C++ code...
I'm getting older!

I don't always ask questions on Stack Overflow, but when I do... they're always very, very specific :P

@NathanOsman :D Do you ever get any very, very specific answers???

8:23 PM
Occasionally.

I used to work with a ton of C++ programmers. I bet my buddy Evil would know.

This looks like me asking a question on AU, then setting a bounty and then still no one finding a solution to the problem...

I based it off my bug report: bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-47073

Ah!
@Serg Back home!
:-)

8:40 PM
@Fabby yessir, finally ! and about to go to starbucks now with my buddy

Yeah! Overpriced coffee and bagels!!! :D

@Serg have fun my friend :)

Q: how to set cpuset/cgroup.clone_children flag to 1

RamboI am trying to set the cpuset/cgroup.clone_children to 1 so that whenever I create a cgroup, it should by default copy all values from the parent cgroup. Also I am curious if there is a way to copy all values from parent cgroup to a child cgroup. For e.g. if I created a cgroup like: sudo cg...

I can access my external. But the directory that I want to access is readonly and I can't access. I tired to change the ownership as well as permission but I can't do so. Any suggestions?

8:55 PM
@psimeson Erm, very vague... Could you provide the link to your question?
Does that contain more info?

@terrance Hi. I can access my external. But the directory that I want to access is readonly and I can't access. I tired to change the ownership as well as permission but I can't do so. Any suggestions?
@fabby I have anold HDD. I want to extract from file from this drive. So, I mounted it to my ubuntu machine using external HDD dock. I can see the directories but I can access files inside of those directories

@psimeson Hi. Give me a few here. I am presently working on another project, but in a bit we could run a teamview so I can see it.

@terrance sounds good.
@fabby : when I do ls Desktop I get ls: cannot open directory Desktop/: Permission denied

@psimeson close all file manager windows, then run from a terminal: gksudo nautilus and try again!

@psimeson I am going to go with @Fabby at the moment. I believe he is on the right track there. :)
Rebooting system. Back in a bit.

9:00 PM
@Terrance Mail server, unix command etc... ;-)

@fabby when I try to do chown I get chown: changing ownership of ‘Desktop/’: Read-only file system

@psimeson you need a question...
Too complex for a one-line answer.

9:13 PM
@psimeson send the codes for teamview.

give me a sec

@psimeson no problem

@Terrance done

Q: How do I reply to a user who tagged me in a comment?

RookieGuiI've seen that there's no such feature as a pm system as stated on the answer to this question and I perfectly understand why; The problem is that a new user has no way of replying to inbox since: he/she can't post comments until obtaining 50 reputation ( and it would be unadvisable to reply t...

Q: Ubuntu 15.04 not loading from external hard drive for AMD

vamsiampoluI installed the Ubuntu 15.04 on a Seagate expansion drive.I tried booting it up from my machine: http://www.flipkart.com/lenovo-essential-g505s-59-379862-laptop-apu-quad-core-a8-8gb-1tb-dos-2-5gb-graph/p/itmdm5ukxfqvwkqf?pid=COMDM5UGX9QFNWAM but it hangs(I waited over 30 mins,just to be sure) ...

I have installed ubuntu on my internal hard drive and am still facing similar problems.I have tried using nomodeset,I have tried the recovery mode,I have updating the BIOS driver,however it always hangs at the Loading initial ramdisk.

11:19 PM
So my bank offers free guest WiFi. Please, please, please tell me that they are using a network completely separate from what the bank itself uses.

I banged my head against the wall so hard I cried. -- was going to use laughed, but that expresses a different emotion. Suffice it to say, I'm not crying.
