@A.B. Deleted! Thanks!
@A.B. Gparted is installed by default on 14.04 (can't remember for previous versions)

Does anybody know where I can get a geologist and expert about the creation of the Grand Canyon from?
RPiAwesomeness is giving hard arguments I can't rebut without the suitable knowledge - which I don't have as I am a programmer and not a historian or geologist...

user136984
@Fabby: What should I do about this guy?

user136984
He now says that he doesn't want to try to fix his problem in Ubuntu with Skype, but just switch back to Windows 7.

Q: Skype video call does not work

Marko HorvatIn my Skype video settings I can see myself (not just a still), and also in cheese, but when attempting a Skype video call, I can only see a still of myself where the video should be. And there is also a line across the video icon/button. Why is this and how can I fix it?

user136984
4:51 PM
@jrg: What do you think I should do about the above?

user136984
Anyone have any thoughts?

user136984
He's decided to go back to Windows 7, and given up with Linux, so do I vote to close as already resolved?

user136984
@ByteCommander?

user136984
:)

Do whatever you want.
A horde of creationists is currently attacking my nerves.
Well - they are not attacking.
They are just difficult to disprove.
But Unihedron is really annoying me at the moment.

4:55 PM
@ByteCommander Huh? Let me at 'em! Where? Creationism is ridiculously easy to disprove.

user136984
@ByteCommander: Where is that?

user136984
:D

user136984
@terdon: What do you think that I should do about this guy though (above)?

user136984
He now says that he doesn't want to try to fix his problem in Ubuntu with Skype, but just switch back to Windows 7.

So should I vote to close?

user136984
As he has made up his mind.

@terdon Thanks for your support.

 Theories about the origin of earth an

A discussion about evolution and big-bang theory vs. Young Ear...

@ByteCommander Yeah, reading the transcript now.

@ParanoidPanda May as well, yes. I'd choose "non reproducible".

user136984
4:58 PM
Ok

user136984
@ByteCommander: So who is the creationist in that room?

RPiAwesomeness.

user136984
Oh no...

user136984
:D

user136984
We've lost him!

5:01 PM
@ParanoidPanda VTC...

user136984
@ByteCommander: Wait, you're not one of them too are you?

user136984
I'm very confused...

user136984
@ByteCommander: Who's the science guy and who's the creationist and what are you guys talking about?

user136984
:D

jrg
hey, at least you all decided to create a room for this sensitive topic.

5:12 PM
@ParanoidPanda Me: science. RPi: Creationism
But he's giving me a hard time.

jrg
should we get some Christianity.se and Biology.se mods to moderate this debate?

Too bad I don't have a friend of mine on the phone.

jrg
only way it will be 100% partial.

He's an expert on history and geology and things like that.
@jrg Good idea, if you know some. :)

user136984
Well... It seems that I have now entered the debate as I have posted something in there too! :D

5:14 PM
So?
We are no sect in that room, so you may still enter and leave freely whenever you want.

5:36 PM
Meh, most of what happened in the past doesn't really matter in the grand scheme

grand scheme @Mateo?

The "big picture" so to say

6:11 PM
@ParanoidPanda hello

I'm here.
@ByteCommander Did I miss the debate?

@NathanOsman here

user136984
@NathanOsman: But they don't like Pasafarians so that's why I'm not in there! >:{

Thanks.

6:37 PM
Here we go again with SourceForge.
This time they're bundling adware with the Gimp for Windows installer.
@RPiAwesomeness: oh... you already posted the link :P

@ParanoidPanda What did you do?

user136984
I clicked the button to delete the room...

@NathanOsman :D

user136984
@ByteCommander: And you left!

NO, the room is still alive.

user136984
6:48 PM
But nothing actually happened!

You just kicked me out!

user136984
What?!

user136984
...

You
kicked
me

user136984
Really?

6:48 PM
He couldn't have.

out of the room!

He's not an owner of this room.

Out of the Pasta room.

Oh.
Yeah, I have nothing to do with that room.

Not that I would have intended to be there.
But I had to click away that invitation.

6:49 PM
Just click the "click here to remove the notification bar" link.
It's in small print under the header that pops up.

user136984
@ByteCommander: Anyway, please, enough of this guys, too much negativity, I understand you want a debate based on facts and nothing else, and that is fine, you should just make that clear at the beginning and not be so rude to his noodlyness!

user136984
:D

Q: Unable to boot windows

youtaI had windows on NTFS drive. I freed a partition and installed Ubuntu successfully on an SDA drive . I booted to Ubuntu once but after I restarted i wan't able to boot into it again and all I could boot to was just windows. So I reinstalled Ubuntu on the previous Ubuntu drive, but now I can't boo...

It looks like a valid question.
But I'm very certain it's a dupe.
Don't have time to find it at the moment though.

user136984
6:54 PM
Ok, it's just that I never know what to do with these that ask about booting into Windows, when they have Ubuntu and nothing to do with that.

@ParanoidPanda No more noodles. Pleeeeaaaassssseee!

user136984
@ByteCommander: Not in your room, but elsewhere! :D

Off for supper.
Bread! Not noodles.
If you were going to ask...

user136984
I was!

user136984
:D

6:57 PM
@ParanoidPanda It appears to be a problem caused by installing Ubuntu, so it would be in our best interests to accept it as a valid question.

user136984
Ok

@Mateo: ^^

@NathanOsman With the state of open source hosting I'm sad Google Code died.
Not that I had any love for it.
But GitHub isn't the perfect option.

Launchpad offers Git now so it will be interesting to see where that goes.
And anyone can run GitLab too. (Which I do for private projects.)

@NathanOsman Indeed, but I'm not sure Launchpad is really cut out to host the world's code. Not sure though.
@NathanOsman That's true too.

7:20 PM
@ByteCommander I love noodles :D

But requires you host it yourself.

O/ hi guys

@Seth It's a lot easier to run now, though.
It used to involve setting up Ruby, etc.
Now it's a single DEB IIRC.

Q: Issue on updating Linux Ubuntu

VynylynQuestion #1: As LU is strongly suggesting me, I want to update my packages but a problem (which I hadn't encountered before) interrupts upgrading process. Some specific packages fail to be downloaded. They are: LibiCu25, LibreOffice-Calc 4.2.8, LibreOffice-Common 4.2.8, LibreOffice-Writer4.2.8 a...

7:30 PM
@A.B. hi o/ how's life ? Any good questions today on the site ? I'm in New York, waiting for my flight

New York cool
Good questions? No. Only 20 points today.

Still some points. Hopefully I won't miss much on the site while I'm on vacation.
Well, gotta conserve the phone battery. I just wanted to see how's chat doing. See you later !

How long have you vacation?
Cu

Anyone ever used Ekiga?
Looking for a good, hopefully FOSS replacement to Skype.
Doesn't need video conferencing, but it's a nice feature.
Honestly mobile app is more important.

7:44 PM
@ParanoidPanda more spam?
interesting inbox you have :)

user136984
@Mateo Yep! :D

user136984
@Mateo Yes, I do! ;P

i'm going to get out the atom box again - maybe make it do owncloud on snappy or something
which sadly seemed not to be on arm

@NathanOsman oh hm. Does Ekiga not support text chatting too? I guess I should have asked that first :P

Q: Linux Ubuntu: Problem using Python3 Package Installer

VynylynI successfully installed Python3's Pip and SetupTool packages by: sudo apt-get install python3-pip but when I try to download/install any package for Python3 by: pip install <package-name> It says that I don't have python-pip. It looks like OS's default is Python2 but I don't want to use it...

@kos Server Fault only accepts questions that are in a professional capacity, I doubt they'd look kindly on this question.

No, they most certainly won't.

kos
@Seth I see, so you propose to leave it here?

@kos I'm not entirely sure what to do with it, but since it is software on Ubuntu I guess that's what we'll do.

8:49 PM
It would be nice if they ever implemented cross-site duping, so you could close as a duplicate on SU or UL. I'm sure it must have been asked one of those places already...

I don't know.. I think some questions should be asked and answered in multiple places.

kos
@Seth Ok, I removed my close vote.
By the way I have the same fear when redirecting someone to Stack Overflow. I've not been around there much, so I don't know what is the policy about very trivial programming questions. Are those generally acceptable over there or does the same as Server Fault apply as well?

EKIA

@Seth fair point... maybe a way to "link answers". so you could answer the same question two different places the same way and you update one the other is updated?
@kos I don't think you should encourage people to post trivial stuff over there. They'll just get DV-hammered and associate the negative experience with you directing them there.

9:06 PM
@hbdgaf That's an interesting idea, but I think the main reason you would answer it in two places in the first place is so you could tailor the answer to the more specific audience of the different site. Still, neat idea.
@kos It's not the same as Server Fault, but Stack Overflow gets roughly 8k questions a day so you need to make your question good. It depends on how you look at trivial. There's "I didn't bother to Google or try anything" trivial and there's "I've Googled to the best of my ability, tried x, tried y, this is what I have, this is what I want". You can ask trivial questions in the latter form, but it usually doesn't happen often ;)

@Seth My case in point is where I posted the AU canonical answer to broadcom wireless on UL. Luis should get the credit (I just copy pasted his answer and dropped a link). So, it could help with cross-site rep too...

Basically Stack Overflow wants quality. That's it. Give 'em quality and you'll be fine. That AU question doesn't really look high quality.

kos
@hbdgaf So in case of "high trivialness", link to a good programming reference and close, that's it. Sounds like the best thing actually.

@kos I occasionally answer "Homework" questions, but I also say "sounds like homework" in the comments.

kos
@Seth Yes, I see your point. I'll just vote to close what it really doesn't deserve to be there.

9:18 PM
I'ld love to read some code with the comment:
# This part is held together by a ritual involving duct tape and unicorn blood
4

kos
@hbdgaf Yes me too before closing if the asnwer is really trivial. I remember a question of some day ago where the user wondered about why cout >> "Hello World" wasn't working. So in that case I just left a comment explaining the situation.
Well GTG no. Bye all o/

later

later @kos!

@kos A doubly awesome answer to that question would have been some way to make a macro reverse the operators so the code worked written wrong. I would upvote that.

huh, I kindof expected to see a .iso for snappy, I'm looking to setup a 64bit snappy box
going to try and flash the image

9:24 PM
I don't think the direction they're going with snappy is really the sort of one where you deploy via ISO. So, might it be better not to waste time on building that deployment pattern?

maybe...
maybe just setup a server - that then would kvm or docker the image?

Snappy is more like a chroot than a container.
AFAIK.

@NathanOsman The way I read what @Mateo is asking is "Why isn't there an ISO for snappy core" and my answer is "The deploying an image thing means it's supposed to land on embedded devices and cloud instances, so you don't get to have a DVD drive"
@Mateo There's an image deployment pattern for the rpi. You have one of those don't you?

so I have a small box I want to install it standalone on a x86 box
@hbdgaf owncloud wasn't on the arm store...
some others may have only been 64bit aswell

Ohhhhhhh. ^^^^(two extra ups to get to small x86 box comment) neat idea for a use case. I wonder if you can migrate an ec2 image to bare metal. That would be a way to get it.

9:33 PM
yeah, would be cool - like a closet server, just do snaps for the extra things you want
or docker images

I think the problem we'll see with people repurposing old x86 boxes is - if anything breaks, it's cheaper to buy a pi than it is to fix it, and it's about as fast.

true - but I have like about 20 old x86 boxes in my basement that people were getting rid of to scrounge parts

God you sound like my uncle. He worked for some random company and took home all the spare parts out of de-comissioned machines. His basement was like a playground.

jrg
I periodically sell my x86 boxes, then buy whatever the new power efficient desktop with laptop parts is the coolest new thing.

I recycled a bunch of the older stuff already
things like the extra floppy disk drives, any of the cd drives

9:38 PM
Wait wait wait. x86 is still much faster at general computation than ARM.
And it especially excels at conditional branching.

except a few that had the playback feature built in - those can be standalone cd players
and has onwcloud on snappy ;)
so that is what I wanted to mess around with, I'll let everyone know how flashing the image on a standalone box goes

@NathanOsman Yes it does. It has a lot of "this is the usual branch" guess logic built in - where arm doesn't
and the star was me for reminding me.

As far as I'm concerned, ARM has won the war of power usage though.

and not having to have giant fans or liquid cooling ;)

Yeah, now if I could just run crysis 3 on my pi... sarcasm

9:46 PM
The Pi has a not-half-bad GPU.

user136984
@hbdgaf I just came on and that was the first thing I saw! :D

user136984
What is it...?

A female lion running from a probably tiny spider, even though she'ld not fear a pack of hyenas.

user136984
Ok...

user136984
10:05 PM
Not what we interpret it to be, but what is it really? :P :D

@ParanoidPanda Who cares...it's funny :)
We don't ask "What is it really?" about Nyan Cat do we? :D

@ParanoidPanda Have you looked at the in-line pic too? :D

@ParanoidPanda The female probably had an injured leg. And the male picked it up to move it out of another male's territory.

user136984
@hbdgaf: Oh, well, when I first saw it I imagined it to be something more sexual which I will not go into but you can probably guess... But then that was in fact just my initial interpretation! :P

@ParanoidPanda Get your mind out of the gutter!

10:09 PM
Well, we tell people who we are when we interpret images.

user136984
@hbdgaf: Oi!

user136984
:D :D :D

off for a bit

user136984
@Fabby: Yep! :D Why is he scratching his bum...?

10:13 PM
@hbdgaf Rorschach anyone?
@ParanoidPanda He's holding a live wild lion still by holding his nuts!

user136984
Oh...

user136984
:D

That is gonna be one pissed off lion once he lets go...
I like how the lady's all like nope.

@RPiAwesomeness :D True!

Lady lion that is

I love it! :D

@Mateo: What do you think of the bear? :P

Didn't watch yet

@Mateo Go on then! It's only 31 seconds! ;)

G'night!

Ever heard of telegram @NathanOsman?

I've only heard of it.
I'm afraid I know next to nothing about it.

Well I think I'm going to find out. Just curious if you'd seen it and what you thought.
It sounds almost too good to be true.

they said they had a client for the ubuntu phone

oh hrm, it's all based on your phone number.
Not 100% sure what I think of that.
@Mateo They even have a FirefoxOS client, so I believe it!
and an (unofficial, but still listed on their site) CLI client!

Well, with an API, the sky's the limit.

11:45 PM
an api a not a crazy company
like that one company owned by the social media company not to be named
