You are philosophizing about dividing base64 numbers and you don't even know by what you want to divide it???

user136984
I am still calculating and verifying that...

user136984
Although I think that I have nearly figured it out...

user136984
Ok, I've figured out what number I am dividing by! :D

@ParanoidPanda: I would use Bless or GHex. Both are HEX Editors and they are there to edit binary files without corrupting data

user136984
8:04 PM
@Helio: How will they help me with what I am doing though?

@ParanoidPanda: What are you doing?

user136984
Getting a base64 dump of a tar file and dividing it by a large number.

user136984
:D

user136984
So far anyway...

user136984
How should I go dividing it by this number though?

user136984
8:07 PM
Should I just convert the number into base64 and tell it to convert?

user136984
@kos: What do you think?

user136984
How do I got about dividing the number by the other base64 number?

user136984
Also, I want to keep the original value of the number being divided, and I also want to keep the answer I get.

base64 is not meant to be divided, I think.

@ParanoidPanda: Earth, swallow me :-/. Sorry.

8:11 PM
You can, of course, but it is not intended, afaik

user136984
It doesn't matter if it is not intended, the question is not is it intended, but how do I do it?

kos
@ParanoidPanda Like I said before, it's not easy to divide. You should convert it to base 10, do the division and convert back. This schema represents the whole conversion thing roughly:

Use code formatting.
4 spaces in front of each line.

@kos: I was going to try and convert to base 10, but @muru said I should not.

kos
@ParanoidPanda I don't know of any other method to divide a base64 number
The same thing is also done to convert hexadecimal / octal to decimal

user136984
So how do I then convert to base10 from base64?

@ByteCommander Nightwish are awesome, but I think original singer is the best. Wanderlust is my fav song of theirs

8:18 PM
Never heard that one.
Have to try, thanks. :)
Current song: Alpenglow

user136984
@kos: I understood from muru that it would be better for me to not do anything to do with decimals and just do base64, and that I should divide in base64.

kos
@ParanoidPanda Look at the example. Q(64) = 16(10) = 010000(2), U(64) = 20(10) = 010100(2), so QU(64) = 010000010100(2) = 1044(10)

@Helio Thanks
@ParanoidPanda I don't know how you could do it! I don't claim there's no way tough

@kos: You're welcome. However I can't get the damn indentation. I put 4 spaces but it didn't work.

user136984
8:24 PM
Well, I am going to go away now and draw a plan of exactly what I want to do... Hopefully after that I will have a better idea about some things.

kos
@Helio Paste the raw text and hit fixed font on the right of the text box, four-space indentation doesn't work for me either

kos
@ParanoidPanda Ping me if you want, however if muru's aware of a method to divide directly in base64 I'd like to know as well, If i recall that's hard to do also just in binary

@kos Only works if all lines are indented 4 spaces.
^ cc: @Helio

What I don't understand is why @ParanoidPanda does not want to deal with hex ? It's so common

kos
8:28 PM
@ByteCommander Ok I see, that's probably the reason

@Serg He's special.
Why do it easy if you can do it complicated?
;D

@ByteCommander >.> well, I can relate to that, just look at my answer here askubuntu.com/a/627914/295286
But yeah, this whole ordeal with converting file to a large string of numbers, then dividing, is just confusing

kos
@ParanoidPanda Actually now that I think of it, it should be the exact same thing, but it's everything but intuitive to understand visually if a number fits in another in base64! Have a look at how binary divisions are made: exploringbinary.com/binary-division, you should do the same using base64 digits
In any case you want to code a script or program, to do what you're trying to do to it's far easier to convert to base 10 using something, dividing and converting back

8:44 PM
@A.B.: English isn't my mother tongue, in fact I'm from Gran Canaria island (I think that is owned by Germans) ;-). However I try to be as correct as possible. Pilot6 commented that the way to run xinput at boot will not work. I don't tried it.

@ParanoidPanda my anaconda don't want none if you aint got hex numbers son XD sorry, I'm in the mood for tweaking songs today

@Helio Gran Canaria is German? o.O
If we have a remote island, this would be Mallorca...
;-)

I should call my laptop anaconda ; oh gowd that will be funny

Good night folks!

@ByteCommander o/ sleep tight

8:49 PM
@ByteCommander: No it's Spanish... but the most of germans does they summer vacations on that island. It was a joke ;-)

kos
@ByteCommander o/

@ByteCommander: Good night!

user136984
@Serg: I really don't mind what I use, as long as I can divide! :D :P

user136984
It's all of you who are being fussy here!

@ParanoidPanda I'm not being fussy, I'm just learning as I go. Wish I could help but my knowledge is very limited so far

kos
8:56 PM
@ParanoidPanda Tough it would be way easier if you would undisclose what the purpose of all of that is, because I'm still missing it o.O

@ParanoidPanda so where are you in this whole project ? what have you achieved so far and what's next ?

Q: Will booting ubuntu in recovery mode use default keyboard layout?

CaballeroI have a chromebook with Ubuntu 15.04 and I need to customize some of my keyboard keys in xkb. Unfortunately while doing so I managed to disable my keyboard and needed to boot from live USB to revert the changes (xkb: make ctrl+backspace behave as delete) My question is: will booting in recovery...

ugh, I hate looking up old answers. I've had this script to limit users from specific time of day to another time, but i cannot find it now

user136984
@Serg: Well, I have got data collection and reversion going (so the start and finish), now I have got to go through the data to plan the next stages, to fill in the values for the equation which is coming soon, and then I have to manipulate the data to form other data, and finally do that a couple of times, and then reverse!

@ParanoidPanda Making progress, I see

user136984
9:05 PM
Yes, my entire team decided to go on holiday for this week! >:{ So normally the team would discuss the project, plan it, and then start working, and I wouldn't be coming here and pestering people, but it's just me working on the project at the moment so... :D

user136984
But my team seems very busy with other stuff too, so it's likely that I will be the only one working on the project for some time! :D :P

user136984
Which maybe isn't so bad...

user136984
I guess I don't have to share credit with the rest of my team if I do the project myself! >:)

user136984
:D

@ParanoidPanda get all the credit and fortune and fame :D !
I'm going on vacation,too, for a month and half ish
T_T I'm gonna miss so many good questions, and probably lots of rep

user136984
9:11 PM
:D

But once I come back, I'm gonna dive deep into coding and working out. I wanna learn gtk and maybe python. Oh, and need to get ready for Java 2 class. I passed intro class, now gonna shoot for more advanced stuff
As for working out, I want to grow some muscle. Too skinny and too geeky. Need to get handsome like the guy in Blackhat

user136984
Oh yes, Java is great, it's my primary programming language! :)

user136984
:D

user136984
When I want to work out, I play Chess!

9:15 PM
@ParanoidPanda that's the workout for the mind, many kings and philosophers would play chess in the past
The intro class to java was quite easy for me, mainly because I was familiar with C
but passing parameters from method to method was pain in the butt; our professor wanted us to practice passing variables. Especially that was pain in the butt when I declared everything public static to use globally, and he told me to change it >_<

user136984
:D

user136984
Right, anyway, off to bed now! And I hope that when I come back tomorrow @muru has some answers about dividing in base 64! :D

user136984
So...

user136984
Goodnight!

@ParanoidPanda good night , my friend, sleep well

9:33 PM
Seriously thinking about trying out the one handed typing as a hobby. Like relearning your set of home-keys, re-centering, and learning touch typing one handed on each side. Would be cool to run two keyboards as once as a party trick.

@hbdgaf when I was just starting to learn typing, I would type with just right hand. It's kinda ok though I had to keep eyes on the keyboard all the time

well, there are typing learning programs for people with only the use of one hand... to make them adjust. it would be like a drill 30 minutes or so a day playing some typing tutor game like typershark one-handed and recentered though. wouldn't be my primary mode of typing. just think it would be a neat thing to be able to do fairly naturally.

@hbdgaf that would be definitely cool . Like, got fedora on your left , ubuntu on your right, and just typing away

sort of. not saying i would be able to process two screens at once, but you know that muscle memory you get for tying commands without thinking about it when you're touch typing, where you don't think through the word at all and you're infinitely faster on ls -la than on as x yw? It would kind of be neat to dispatch a command to the left then start reading from the right while my hand is still executing. not sure it would work out that way, but it would be neat.

My muscle memory has made things really interesting. I often find myself writing "server" instead of "service", for example.
My fingers are so used to typing certain words that sometimes the wrong one gets typed out :P

9:45 PM
yeah, your brain doing auto-correct.

I kind of try to remember commands and everything, but still feel more comfortable actually typing comands in terminal. Like, I can suggest some commands when answering a question here while using a Windows machine, but .. . . the situation just feels different
or maybe I should lay off using tab button for auto completion in terminal. Or switch to ksh93
or dash

or put in a tiny lxc container inside of boot2docker that way you can just ssh in to a thing box and it might feel the same.

voted
@hbdgaf what's lxc container and boot2docker ?
Remember I'm very green

boot2docker lets you run docker containers on windows. lxc is something completely different, but the boot2docker vm can run lxc containers sort of.

9:56 PM
boot2docker is a lightweight Linux distribution based on Tiny Core Linux made specifically to run Docker containers. It runs completely from RAM, weighs ~27MB and boots in ~5s (YMMV).
5 seconds ? holly balls !

Haiku boots in less time than that and it includes a fairly heavy GUI :P

@hbdgaf I'll be sure to try this out when I come back to the States . Leaving tomorrow for month and half to see my hometown
@NathanOsman Is haiku one of the *nixes ?

@hbdgaf that would be cool, I tried picking up Dvorak seriously - did the "let's dive right in" learning tequnique - started getting ok... But then couldn't type properly in either layout for weeks :/ so just defaulted back to qwerty

@Mateo the one i was looking at was one-handed qwerty

It's 4 pm, gtg guys. Keep on typing, guys ! With either one or two hands

10:00 PM
pinkie on the f or j respectively for each hand.

@Serg I don't think so.

Ah, cool
@Serg based on BeOS

^--- realtime

I like how the windows are tabs and they stack and click together

That's kind of how i3 works... not including boot time.

10:12 PM
@NathanOsman Whoa.

Just think it could have been the base for osx instead of nextstep - m.theregister.co.uk/2007/01/30/forgotten_tech_beos

hacker trivia i didn't know. should definitely be on hacker-jeopardy next year at defcon.

@NathanOsman Hey! You're running Haiku, cool! I've been wanting to try that.

A: Gaming Screen Recorder

blade19899You might wanna try gamecaster, from Ubuntuvibes. Gamecaster is a graphical frontend for open source project glc. It can capture real time footage of any Linux game that uses ALSA for sound and OpenGL for drawing. Gamecaster has following features: Capture HD video of Linux games ...

To bad this never went stable, or is even being maintained

Going back to watching poolhall junkies. Good movie if you haven't seen it.

10:52 PM
@blade19899 GLC still works though.

11:08 PM
Does Ubuntu have some sort of special "recovery mode" that's different from other distros? Isn't it just booting into runlevel 1 or whatever the equivalent is?

11:34 PM
"recovery mode" is a lot like init 1

11:47 PM
@blade19899 ah, its using python - that is good
