12:00 AM
2 - 5 minutes left on the ISO - Deluge is useful i guess in this case
can't do that at work xD
@Seth want to make your comments on the q as well so others can see what we've done in terms of diagnosis so far?

Sure.

thanks
chat is nice for realtime diagnostics, but to ensure people don't ask the same redundant questions... :)

Yes, that's true.
ok done.

fooey i downloaded i386 instead of amd64 >.<
@Seth I don't have my script to yell to SysLog, but is there a command that can spit text onto syslog?
found it there
:)

Docker doesn't provide namespaces for container names?
Lame.

12:12 AM
@ThomasW. I'm not sure I understand.. You want to write to syslog?

@Seth Test script
@Seth RUN+="GoodDrive.sh" and RUN+="BadDrive.sh"
since i'm watching syslog :)
hating downloading though

Try the command logger.

i already found the answer to that one
cyberciti via google beat you :/
i need coffee :/
@Seth can 'logger' be passed as a command of RUN+="..." or would it be better to trigger via a script?

@ThomasW. I'm not sure..

i'll run it via script for sanity :P

12:21 AM
I'd try running it directly from RUN first
or that.

instaling the VM now
thank god for "Easy Install" xD

That's my favorite feature.

i think i have to allow blacklisted VM drivers though :/
again
god this is slow >.<
sorry its taking an eon, @Seth

that's ok. VMs always do that :/

especially Unity
i might disable it

12:48 AM
hello from the 12.04 VM
@Seth what's the command to refresh the rules and have them reloaded for active use, other than a reboot
udevadm control --reload-rules and udevadm trigger?

sounds right
I can't remember exactly what I used.

oooooo
that's interesting
all the rules trigger?
REALLY?
several times

Grr...stupid Gtk TextBuffer :P
For whatever reason, if you have italic/underlined stuff and disable italic and/or underline via the buttons, it closes all the formatting tags, and then re-applies them to the final character :P

@ThomasW. That's really weird.

Which, in turn, is causing problems because it's re-applying underline/italic to any new text after the buttons are turned off.

1:01 AM
@Seth yes, it is, maybe i should test the rules in a 14.04 more updated environment?
maybe the rules are too 'new'?
although I thought most udev rules have existed for ever :/

sup?
anyone willing to help me with rsync?

define 'help' :p

help = do it for me?

ambiguous what your want to achieve
*has lost interest since you didn't give any instructions of what the heck you want to achieve*

@ThomasW. I want to set up rsync to back up my minecraft server nightly automagically to a USB flash drive on my Ubuntu server.

1:09 AM
difficult if minecraft is running :P
because java is a pain

@ThomasW. difficult, but not impossible?

difficult because data is being written live while the rsync is continuing
unless there's a 'read only' mode you can put minecraft into (which there isnt)

1:43 AM
Run it in a VM and then you can use the hypervisor's snapshotting capabilities to create a snapshot that can be backed up.
And no, before you ask, I'm not about to go into the detailed process for doing that :P

@ThomasW. sorry my USB devices decided to stop working, then I had to get the kids to bed...
So other then @NathanOsman outlandish solutions, any other ideas?

Hey, call it what you will - at least it's foolproof and it would work.
Can your script kill the Minecraft server temporarily, create the backup, and then start it again?

@NathanOsman yeah but I prefer not to recreate EVERYTHING...
@NathanOsman Yeah that would be fine

What are you using to run the Minecraft server? init, Upstart, systemd, something else... ?

Just a sec, I don't remember
this is the command I use to start it.
java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar

1:48 AM
Don't you have it integrated with your OS's init system?
What happens when your server gets rebooted?

No I haven't taken the time to do it yet

ಠ_ಠ

@NathanOsman then I have to manually start it.

How do you shut it down (the Minecraft server)?

@NathanOsman it was on my to-do list, never got around to it though...
the server or minecraft?

1:49 AM
Minecraft.

the standard stop command

Stop command?

I think it is /stop
via ssh

Oh, does the "java [...]" command drop you into some sort of interactive prompt?

Yeah something like that.

1:51 AM
Are you running this under "screen" by any chance?

Yes I am

/facepalm

what?

We really need to get this into an init script :P
You're running Ubuntu 14.04, I assume?

I know, I would like to, just haven't had time...
Yes I believe so.

1:52 AM
Okay, so we just need to write a quick-and-dirty Upstart job then.
Then we can use it to both start and stop the server.

14.10

...and then we can write the rsync script to do the backup.
@TheX ...on a server???

@NathanOsman yeah.

No matter - Upstart works there too.

It started as a proof concept...
I didn't mean for it to be long term...

1:53 AM
(Unrelated tip: I tend to stick with LTS releases when provisioning servers...)

@NathanOsman well ya...hindsight...

Anyway... good news.
^--- somebody already wrote one
Follow the instructions there and let me know if you run into any troubles.

Okay.
uh...I think I broke it...

@RPiAwesomeness sup dude...

2:01 AM
@TheX Gtk+ man. Gtk+...
>.>

gtk?

Yah

Q: Gtk TextBuffer.serialize returns text with format tags, even when there is visually none in the Gtk TextView

RPi AwesomenessI'm working with a Gtk TextView/TextBuffer in my project where I have the user able to type in rich text (bold/italic/underline) by selecting the correct toggle buttons. The problem is that if I apply the underline or italic Pango flag to text within the textview, then turn off italic/underline ...

@NathanOsman lol....okay...
@NathanOsman I did what the destructions said, and now I get a unknown job
when I run the start or shutdown command

Where did you put the file?
/etc/init?

2:08 AM
I think so
Yeah it is in there.

Does "cat /etc/init/minecraft-server" show the contents of the file?

Yes

I assume you also ran: "sudo initctl reload-configuration"?

yes

That's weird.
Can you paste the exact output of "sudo start minecraft-server"?

2:11 AM
just a second,...
accidently closed putty
start: Unknown job: minecraft-server

@TheX Noob. Using Windows instead of Ubuntu is unacceptable :D

@RPiAwesomeness You do realize that putty is available on Linux too right?

@RPiAwesomeness He's using PuTTY to connect to an Ubuntu server.

@TheX Wat. I thought it was a windows client for SSH ...
Now who's the noob :P

Few people use PuTTY on Linux though since SSH is easier for most.
@TheX That's really weird.

2:14 AM
I use Putty, at work to connect to our Cisco network gear, it is what I am use to using :-P

@TheX: So apparently that error can mean there's a bug in your script.

No shock lol

Do you mind using a pastebin to show us the contents of the file?

How about I screen share with you via hangouts?

I guess... I don't know if it works on my end but we can try.

2:15 AM
if it doesn't work we can go with plan b then

Weird... it went to my phone...

lol

My Internet is slow and the plugin is acting up.
Maybe we better try something else.

Okay pastbin it is then

Found it.
chdir YOUR_INSTALLATION_DIRECTORY

2:20 AM
I just saw that actually.

You're supposed to replace that with an actual path :P

And to think, I run a entire school district :-P

It happens :P

still not working...

Does the directory that you specified contain minecraft_server.jar?
Did you create the minecraft group and user?
Does the user have access to the directory?

2:24 AM
yes, yes, and I think so

You might also try this command:
sudo tail /var/log/upstart/minecraft-server.log
Hopefully that tells us the problem.

tail: cannot open ‘/var/log/upstart/minecraft-server.log’ for reading: No such file or directory

Nope, I guess it didn't write to the log then.
Might have to ask a question then.
I don't know enough about Minecraft.

Okay, So I went back through everything, made sure everything was correct, and same problem.

Q: Setting up Minecraft server to start and stop automatically

TheXI followed this tutorial: http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Tutorials/Ubuntu_startup_script and I am getting an error that says: start: Unknown job: minecraft-server when I run the start or stop command. Can anyone help me please?

One more idea...
init-checkconf /etc/init/minecraft-server

2:33 AM
Its been a long time since I have asked a question on here...

Try running that command.

ERROR: File must end in .conf

In that case...
Try renaming the file and running "sudo initctl reload-configuration" again.

what is the easiest way to rename it?

mv /etc/init/minecraft-server /etc/init/minecraft-server.conf
Probably will need to prefix with sudo.

2:36 AM
Okay that worked.

What does "init-checkconf /etc/init/minecraft-server.conf" say now?

syntax ok

You should be able to start and stop it now.

yup start/stop works

\o/
So now we can write that script for rsync.

2:39 AM
yip

Here's something to get you started:
#!/bin/bash

# Stop the server to avoid any writes while running rsync
stop minecraft-server

# TODO: perform rsync here

# Start the server again
start minecraft-server

So I just have to fill in the blanks...

Save that in a file named something like minecraft-rsync.sh and run "chmod 755 minecraft-rsync.sh" to make it executable.
@TheX Yup. And you can test it with "./minecraft-rsync.sh".

can I save that anywhere?

Yes, but remember where you save it.

2:41 AM
ok

The next step is to add a cron job to have the file run once a day.
...which you can do with:
sudo crontab -e

okay so...
i do the ./minecraft-rsync.sh
and I get a command not found
oh wait
I forgot to make it executable...

Did you make it executable?
:)

I am not the executioner :p

Here's the line to add to the end of the crontab, by the way:
0 0 * * * /path/to/minecraft-rsync.sh

2:46 AM
Okay...

You'll have to put the right path in there.
That basically says "run the minecraft-rsync.sh script once a day at 12:00am".

sudo crontab -e 0 0 * * * /path/to/minecraft-rsync.sh
like that?

No, no, no.
"sudo crontab -e" first.

oh i see...

That will open an editor.
Then add the line I gave you to the very end.

2:47 AM
btw this is way beyond the scope of my understanding so I do appreciate the help.

And don't forget to change the path this time! :)
@TheX It's kind of fun to guide someone through a complex process, BTW :)

Okay Crontab edited

Save the file and close the editor then.

So I just need to edit the minecraft-rsync.sh accordingly...

Yup.

2:49 AM
Which I may tackle later...
but this is a pretty good start...

And you can use "sudo ./minecraft-rsync.sh" at any time to test the script.
...as you work on it.

Is there a reason why crontab saved to /tmp/crontab.bq1rkr/crontab?

@TheX That's fine. You're just editing a temporary file.

Okay...

The crontab -e command sets up your editor with a temporary file.

2:53 AM
So if it is a temp file, will it go away after I restart?

Then once you save and quit, it writes it to the appropriate spot.
@TheX Yes, but it doesn't matter since the appropriate data has already been extracted from it.
Or something like that.

Okay lol
Okay so in theory...and correct me if I am wrong...
Now the server is set to launch Minecraft, at startup.
and will run rsync (when I get it set up) at midnight?

Yes.
At 12:00am, it will stop the server, perform an rsync, and then start it again.
It will also ensure the server runs when you boot the machine.

Sweet.

See why init scripts are important? :P

2:56 AM
I can't check and see if the server is currently running, for some reason Java hates my computer right now.

ps aux | grep minecraft
That will list processes with the name "minecraft" in them that are currently running.

Just checked the logs...
everything is running

And?

So now I just need to figure out rsync

Excellent.

3:02 AM
@NathanOsman is there a way to see where my USB flash drive is mounted to?

You can view all mounts with the "mount" command.

Don't see it...
@NathanOsman this is what I see:

None of those is a flash drive.

Yeah I know lol

You'll need to mount it then, assuming you plugged it in.

3:11 AM
I did plug it in :-D
I may not know what I am doing, but I am not that dense lol

So here's what you do.
Unplug it and run this command:
ls /dev/disk/by-uuid
Now plug it in and run the command again.
The extra entry will be the UUID of the disk.
(There's probably an easier way to do this, but this works :P)

blkid or lsblk, presumably

brb
@NathanOsman Okay got the uuid

Q: why isn't monitor listed under /dev in linux?

D.ZouIf /dev is suppose to list all the devices that is connected, like usb, hdd, webcam, how come on my ubuntu 15 VM I don't see a monitor? I am running the desktop edition so there should be a monitor. Or maybe it is named something different?

oh, no red alert in here?

8 downvotes and it's not deleted?

someone just downvoted without flagging then...

Tsk tsk tsk...

@NathanOsman tomorrows quizz will be on rsync, better study up :=P

3:44 AM
@RPiAwesomeness actually I think it for a different more serious drug they test positive for...
unless you were avoiding using the word in chat on purpose...
hm, I should read the star wall more often...

Have never played with either . . . .

I have a bit of experience with AWS but none with Google.
But reading through the docs, it looks promising.

other than maybe crack or weed...

Should we keep the tag? It contains only 10 questions. I propose editing all those 10 questions and retagging them with instead, if not already used. If you agree with me, I volunteer to do that.

I would. It's a type of printer different from the inkjet or other types, and not all lasterjets are HP printers. I don't think you should I do that.
Focus on that awful close queue instead >.<

But only 10 questions...

12:24 PM
Yeah, but still not worth removing a tag IMO.
You can ask @Seth, but that's my opinion.

^ what I just wanted to do... :)
But he usually comes in the evening, not now.
So we have to wait...

Or maybe @Mitch. He's online now.
What would be your opinion on that?
10 mins ago, by ByteCommander
Should we keep the tag? It contains only 10 questions. I propose editing all those 10 questions and retagging them with instead, if not already used. If you agree with me, I volunteer to do that.

You'd need to come up with a better tag than to replace them with. Like I said, HP isn't the only manufacturer of laserjets.

HP isn't the only manufacturer of laserjet printers, but diffidently the largest.

12:33 PM
Only way that would be true is if all the laserjet questions were about the HP brand
@Mitch True, but it's still wouldn't be correct to automatically re-tag all laserjet tags to hp because that might not be true.

oh, ok.

@RPiAwesomeness and the cheapest...

and what about just removing those tags?

True. So would it be OK to keep laserjet, and not hp?

I think the HP tag is appropriate if the question is specifically asking about a HP Laserjet.

12:36 PM
From Wikipedia:LaserJet as a brand name identifies the line of dry electrophotographic (DEP) laser printers marketed by the American computer company Hewlett-Packard (HP). The HP LaserJet was the world's first desktop laser printer.

Oh well in that case, yes they are redundant.

SO it would make sense to keep the tag laserjet. Any thoughts?

okay, I don't know.
I just thought that tags with only a hand full of questions are pretty useless...

1:01 PM
@ByteCommander you really do not want to get on fossfreedoms bad side >:D
and badges are not useless ;-)

@Rinzwind I don't understand what you mean...

@ByteCommander he works for hp ;)

@Mitch Ooooh. So... [insertprinterrtypehere] Jet is HP. Huh, didn't know that.

good to know... :)

1:26 PM
Yes, LaserJet is an HP trademark, but like Kleenex has come to be used much more broadly. The proper term is laser printer.
I'm not really sure why we need the tag myself.

@Seth Ah, makes sense. I stand corrected.

@Fabby Good answer, but I think "Just use Gnome Totem Player" instead is my preferred solution. :)
@Rinzwind Reading the rest of your answer to askubuntu.com/questions/626980/…, when you say "The MacOS X behaviour is a derivation from POSIX." - do you mean 'deviation' ? That seems to fit more in with the rest of what you've said.

1:48 PM
@Rinzwind yep. I thought it would have been asked before. Also, what @CarlH said about deviation

yes
and who is the 4th upvoter that did not upvote me? :(

@RPiAwesomeness nope. Worse than those.

@blade19899 I doubt if any. Javascript for instance is not owned by anyone so a certification is meaningless.
Just a waste of money. A kick ass real-world example you can show is priceless if you need it for an interview.
