Q: Is it possible to use a dedicated parody drive without striping?

Joseph OdellI'm setting up a log server. I'd like to set them up so that each disk is independent of the next, but the last disk is parody of all the rest. The reason why I want this is because: 1) You can't enable TRIM with striping (as far as I know). 2) SSDs have a higher probability of corrupting data (t...

How is it possible that I can rip a dvd to a nas4free box over the network, faster then I can rip it to a local SSD, by about 10 mins? (Same DVD by the way).

@TheX Which did you do first?
Could be a disk cache issue.

1:40 AM
I tried both...
once to the local first and once to the nas first

2:07 AM
Then no wonder it was faster the second time.
The contents of the DVD were likely in the cache.
You should try it again but restart the computer between tries.
That will rule out any kind of disk cache.

Ill give it a shot later

Alternate question, does anyone know if the libsdl version in the repository comes with framebuffering support by default?

Never in a TTY

no, that's bad
Then you have to compile it yourself. :(

@ByteCommander No, and they've earnt themselves an automatic IP ban for that vandalism.

@Oli But that will just work until they re-connect their router the next time, no?
Btw do you block IPv4 or v6?

Oli
@ByteCommander That's a fairly labour intensive way of trying (and failing) to vandalise a site... Their edits aren't even getting through.
@ByteCommander Pass. I don't block anybody, SE does this all automatically.

That's what I meant...
Because most people don't have unique v4 addresses any more but are forced to use DS-Lite tunnels...

Oli
@ByteCommander I'm not sure that's true for "most people".

All "normal" clients of my ISP have to, including me.
And I bet other ISPs are also going out of v4 addresses...

@kos I don't think it'll be highlighted until you've posted it anyway.

so generally for each connection (user request) to server ( apache ) there will be one process and in that will have many thread !! right ?

@Oli It's highlighted in the preview too.

@Oli Altough it highlights it if write use <!-- language: bash --> before some bash commands

@ByteCommanderso so , generally for each connection (user request) to server ( apache ) there will be one process and in that will have many thread !! am i right ?

@Rinzwind Ugh... I've been using mysql these past few days on a project. I don't know squat about DBs but I can't say I'm too impressed.

@abhi ehm the amount of processes is limited if memory serves me well
@terdon que?

@Rinzwind Oh, I thought you meant sql :)

@Rinzwind Sure I forgot about that one. Why should I remember every answer I ever gave?

@terdon Yes it was it!

@Rinzwind I struggle with it. Likely only because of my ignorance though.

@abhi I don't have experience with apache, but I think you're wrong.

@kos cool

9:45 AM
You can see processes in your task manager (e.g. top), but you don't see threads.

kos
@terdon Thanks, where did you found that by the way?

@kos I looked at the list of languages available. It helps to be a mod.

@ByteCommander okey @Rinzwind CAN U help me with it .. is that right ?

SO check with that if the number of apache processes increases - but I don't think so.

Mind you, they're all listed as lang-foo but I know that bash and others work without lang. I've just noticed that some of them seem to need the lang-.

9:46 AM
When I coded a server application in Java, I used a new Thread for every connection.

Default amount of processes in apache is EIGHT. So unless someone changed the config for that instance it would assume it to max out on 8 processes.

kos
@terdon I see, is there any way that such a list could be accessible by we worthless poor regular users?

@ByteCommander Sure you do, it's H when running top.

okey txs :)

@terdon But not by default, right?

9:47 AM
@kos No idea. Probably. I think SE just uses a google tool for this.
@ByteCommander Probably depends on how the system is set up.
Not default on my Debian anyway, no.

not for me either. I try that "H" now...

Can it be an Ubuntu problem that in FireFox google does not react on the "Enter" key any more? It did once, but stopped some time ago...

10:24 AM
In the location bar or in the search bar?
@ByteCommander In the location bar or in the search bar?

@A.B. on the google website.
I see the "hit enter to start the search", but I can hit it as much as I want...

Here it works.

which web server should i use if my application is in python ? Apache or nginx ?

10:39 AM
Python sucks!
It continuously gives me permission problems...
forget it...

I'm no python fan but I doubt the language can be at fault if you're getting permission problems.

@terdon Yes, that was my fault...
But do you know why I cant pass arguments with sudo -i?
I can do `sudo -u dummy -i "/opt/chatbot/SE-Chatbot/run"`,
but I can't do `sudo -u dummy -i "/opt/chatbot/SE-Chatbot/run -c garage"`!
@terdon you know what's going wrong here?
The second one tells me "-bash: opt/chatbot/SE-Chatbot/run -c garage: File or directory not found".

@ByteCommander Ah, I guess the python exec call needs options separately. Read its docs.

What do you mean?
I can call "./run -c garage" without problems directly, but not with sudo -i
run is a link btw.

Is this in a python script?

10:53 AM
No, I want to run that file from terminal.

Oh, why are you using -i then?

The run links to a python script though.
What should I use instead?

Doesn't sudo -u dummy /opt/chatbot/SE-Chatbot/run -c garage work?
If you quote it, sudo attempts to run the entire string (including options) as a command.

Do you have two spaces before -c accidentally?

$ sudo "ls -a"
sudo: ls -a: command not found

10:55 AM
Ah, okay.
trying...

@ByteCommander Yes, that's irrelevant. The problem is that you're quoting the command given to sudo.

@terdon Thanks, that worked.

np

Why this command doesn't work? I want to find all files like *20150421* but it gives me no result while I have files like that (?)
find -name '*$(date -d "-1 day" +"%Y%m%d")*'

@KasiyA Show me your file names
Never mind, you have the date command in single quotes, it won't get expanded that way
This should work:
find -name "$(date -d "-1 day" +"%Y%m%d")"

10:59 AM
I also tried with double qoutes
but that gives me error
Illegal variable name.

Huh? Works fine for me. What's the exact command your tried?

No luck same error.
Here is what I tru:
find /path/to/dir -name "*$(date -d "-1 day" +"%Y%m%d")*"
Illegal variable name.

That works fine on my system.
Is your find an alias to something? Are you using bash?

really !!
let me check it

$ find  -name "*$(date -d "-1 day" +"%Y%m%d")*"
./20150421

11:07 AM
Actually no, It's csh. so that cause the problem and then what should I do to get my desired output?

Um. not use csh? Why in the world are you using csh?
AT least switch to tcsh
I don't think that csh supports the $() for command substitution
Yes, this works in csh:
% find  -name `date -d "-1 day" +"%Y%m%d"`
./20150421

Work uses CSH :p
No idea why

@JourneymanGeek Really? Argh!
I assume you've read/know about "CSH programming considered harmful" ?

Lul. Oddly. Today.
After my boss bitched about CSH weirdness

:)
@KasiyA this works in csh:
find  -name "*`date -d '-1 day' +%Y%m%d`*"
@JourneymanGeek Wut? If the boss is bitching why don't you change?

11:14 AM
@terdon That's an old system for my friend, I'm using bash and that's why I was oddly about that.
and let me check if that works or not :)

Tell your friend to at least use tcsh if they like csh syntax. csh is yucky,.

Thanks Terdon that works. thanks :)

You're welcome.
I don't know why you don't just run bash and use a proper shell :P

Boss' boss... ;p
and we have a shitton of scripts in it.
(for some reason every bit of software we use seems to have a wrapper script. And we have a ton of environmental variables, without which, shit breaks and...)

And these are all written in csh? Poor puppy.

11:23 AM
lol

@terdon Because I don't want just find those files and I need find's exec and other abilities.

Yeah.
I love my job, but there's some aspects of it... ;p
(I'm still not sure what's not our stuff to keep an eye out for, for example)

And I'm not familiar with another shells except BASH, since I started to learn the shell with it :D

@KasiyA All of which are available no matter what shell you use. Why are you struggling with csh?
@KasiyA Well, run bash

That's part of his (my friend) job :)
not me :P

11:26 AM
No, I mean, if you're using the machine, just open a terminal, run bash and do your work in bash instead of struggling with csh crap.

LOL even I didn't check it that what shell he is using.
And I started my bash way :P

@blade19899 Nice! I like it. One change I would suggest is increasing the icon size as well, those look a bit small to click for some people.

@RPiAwesomeness It's the same icon size as the originals, but, I guess I can stretch them a little!

@blade19899 It is, that was one of my points last time.

@RPiAwesomeness :D My bad. Been busy lately xD

Larger icons!

@blade19899 Better.
I think that looks far better and would be easier to use. Maybe you could suggest that, but then have the icons shrink if the menu runs out of space.
That would be what I would suggest.

@blade19899 Already done ;)

12:55 PM
@RPiAwesomeness I wanted to suggest a max five media players in the sound indicator :/

@blade19899 Ah, that makes sense. I think you could probably get 6-7 though

@RPiAwesomeness I could also set the icons to their original size, and only the active player has this width and height!

Perhaps, but that still would make them harder to select.

That way its more distinct which player is active?

What you could do is make the active one larger, but keep them all that size as above

12:56 PM
@RPiAwesomeness Your right! I will edit it though just to see how it looks!

I don't mind the look, I'm just thinking usability

@RPiAwesomeness Will play with the size! Gimme a minute, Or two!

@RPiAwesomeness I think its to large then. But, thats for the Ubuntu developer to decide!

@blade19899 Yeah, possibly

I'll post this in the bug report!

WHAT THE FLIPPIN HECK HECK HAPPENED TO THE STATION AND MY BASE?
The station is ruined, half the supplies stolen, my base has been smashed into and all my valuables and a bunch more stolen. All my trees cut down and my horse stolen.
Oh yeah, and there's a Nazi symbol outside the station.

@RPiAwesomeness Minecraft Nazis? o.O"??

@ByteCommander Indeed.
@TheX As soon as you get my message, get on the server and look around, especially at my place. Not sure if you did this, or if we have a griefer, but you're gonna have to roll back the server

4:56 PM
@RPiAwesomeness lol
let me check it out

@TheX Seriously. I'm perturbed.

When was the last time you logged in?

Just a few minutes ago

before that

@kos nope.

5:00 PM
Oh, quite some time. I've been busy with school & the Pi 2
last time I got on was right around when we were working on the tunnel, maybe 2-3 days later

Okay...I will have to see what backups I have...checking logs to see if there is a random user that logged in recently...
I am at work right now so I can't do much...I don't have access to the backups

That's fine. I'm busy anyways, got another video I'm working on, but I popped on a little while ago and it was like Herobrine had struck
Mostly my place, but some of yours too

@A.B. Flag as "this is not an answer"...
@Toroidal I use WireShark...

kos
@Rinzwind It's not a valid reason or there's no such post?

I took a back up monday..so lets hope it happened after that or we will have to go further back...
We haven't been really active as of late, so I don't think it will be to bad if we have to go back a week or so..

5:12 PM
You guys let just anyone use the server?

kos
For example, if someone asks about how to integrate PHPMyAdmin with lamp, nor PHPMyAdmin nor lamp are in a default Ubuntu install, and the solution is not Ubuntu-specific. Unless Ubuntu itself it's causing some troubles it should be migrated / closed right?

@RPiAwesomeness you know this person desimator9999
or pspjoker

both sound evil...
