Q: What is the best practice to show logfiles within a question?

jukeySometimes it might be useful to paste the content of a log file related to a question. If the part of the log a short one the markdown for code might be good enough to embed the text into the question: Logfile line 1 line 2 line 3 ... But what should be used for log files that have hundreds of...

@Toroidal What's wrong with pink?

Thx

user136984
@Oli I don't know... But it is just having a sort of depressing effect on me... Pink on white... For some reason makes me feel very strange... :D

Oli
Right, I'll switch to something [traditionally] much more depressing. Murky greeny-blue. (It'll take a few minutes before Gravatar replaces its cache and then you'll have to refresh)

@terdon Well... I should definitely make a computer program which makes thousands of copies of pug photos and overloads a target's computer with them... But gives them a 'depugging' option to clear it all up! ;D :P

user136984
Would that still be sort of considered malware even if no real damage was done and it actually offered to clear up the mess?

@Toroidal It would be rather PUP. Potentially Undesired Programs (I think)

Good for Microsoft, they added keyboard shortcuts for their multiple desktops functionality.

@RPiAwesomeness Huh? Windows has multiple desktops? Since when?
Is than a win8 thing?

@terdon Win10
Not as good as Ubuntu's, I have to say, but still a definite improvement.

Oh, there's a win 10? I think I heard about that.

3:07 PM
@terdon o.O Can't tell if serious or joking...

Serious. I do not keep up with Windows news at all.

Ah. Well, yeah. Windows 10 is actually pretty good, I kinda want to see the final release. Much better than 8.

The wikipedia article makes it look like an improvement, yes. I've only seen windows 8 two or three times though.
Remember, I haven't used Windows as a primary OS since 1999.

Wow, impressive :D
I haven't since mid-2012

That's more impressive. You're quite a bit younger than I :)

3:11 PM
I guess.
Holy heck. Win 10 Tech Preview just froze up my PC. Good gravy.

jrg
Darn people who can use linux everywhere. some of us are stuck with jobs that require adobe... VMs don't react well to 1GB PDFs and 100MB photoshop files.
(although it's funny watching them try)

@jrg :P
@jrg More like darn Adobe who won't support Linux
I would be fairly certain that they would, as well a Linux usage overall, see a fairly sizable increase in usage if they supported Linux.

@jrg For a given meaning of funny. It's funny watching it happen to someone else, for example.
@RPiAwesomeness They used to have reader for Linux.

jrg
@RPiAwesomeness i also worked on a job that was django server side and C#/windows on the client side, so I had to have windows around for that.

@jrg Ah.
@terdon Yeah, they did. I was talking more the creation programs, but that would help to.
Heh. I like how in the FF Dev edition, the advanced tab in settings has a little wizard hat:

@terdon Hey, no problem, i'm not pissed, i meant to turn off the ignore an age ago... problem is i've been ill the past 2 weeks
with a hospital visit for it
so i'm over it, i was having a stressed out day was all
water under the bridge now, mmkay?

@ThomasW. I thought as much (and have often been there),
@ThomasW. Gladly :)
And sorry to hear you were ill, I take it you're OK now?

@terdon recovering. bad sinusitis, potential pneumonia due to high heart rate and minor chest pain (developed on route to the hospital)
thank god i don't have pneumonia, but they gave me IV fluids and medicine, then put me on a wide-spectrum antibiotic
so i'm recovering, but not there yet.

Ouch. Sinusitis sucks.

Does anyone know when Chromium 42 becomes available in the ubuntu repos?
Chromium 42 supports a fix for the webrtc leak but the Ubuntu repos still have the 41 version
I could install the beta version from a ppa, but that's 43 already and unneeded.

@iamatrain whenever it's uploaded/included, most likely.
@iamatrain it's got a MicroReleaseException that allows updates but it's up to the teams that handle it (if any) to upload/include
so you just have to wait and be patient

@NathanOsman ?

5:11 PM
Déjà Dup stopped backing up a month ago and I just realized it.

ouch

That could have been catastrophic.
Good thing I noticed.
Disaster averted.

@NathanOsman unless it stops again

5:25 PM
@ThomasW. I think I know why it stopped.
About a month ago I had an issue with Compiz/Unity and I deleted some config files in ~.
I must have inadvertently deleted the Déjà Dup config.
I'm going to have to turn around reconfigure it again in 4 or 5 days when I do a clean install for Vivid.

5:46 PM
@NathanOsman ah, that explains it :P
@NathanOsman at least you know now you have to reconfigure it, should help a tiny bit :P

Yeah.

Help with wine please?
I get the following error when I run a program:
System.NotImplementedException: Not implemented.

   at Program.InputOutput.createFonts()
   at Program.InputOutput..ctor()
   at Program.MainForm..ctor()
   at Program.MainClass.Main(String[] args)
inside a window. The installation was without problems.

so, which program and version of the program, and the version of wine

Wine... that looks like Mono.

Chemitorium 4.0 from Chip.de
bytecommander@AlkaliMetal:~$ wine --version
wine-1.7.38

5:58 PM
@ThomasW. I've reverted their username and deleted a comment but I'm on mobile so that's about all I can do now.
Please flag if you see any more.

@NathanOsman Does that mean "No chance! Go Windows..."?

Not necessarily, just that few others have tried it.

It installed directX, if that is important.

It should just be ignored.
Wine provides its own implementation of DirectX.

6:00 PM
@Seth Well I see plagarism from the user too
@Seth should I flag?

By all means, please flag plagiarism.

@NathanOsman So is this now the time to smack my face for clicking "Yes"?

@ByteCommander I'm not sure... I think Wine ought to be smart enough to just ignore the installation.
That's what I would do if I was Wine :P

Don't know... It did something, but was done after 10s or so.

@ByteCommander try installing dotnet35 with winetricks

6:02 PM
@NathanOsman done, plus an 'obsolete comment' flag in there too
oops
nope that's right, @Seth just needs to look at it :)

@Mateo Okay, I have some other dotnets, but not 3.5 probably... Trying.

@ThomasW. Oh right, that. I'll try to get to it later. When I'm not mobile. It looks like he had a source, or did muru edit that in?

@Seth neither. "By Silver Moon" on its own isnt a source citation though - Mateo made a note of the source in comments, but it was never edited in or included initially

and it was copy/pasted not quote blocks

and Mateo even says it looks to be verbatim
correct.
@Mateo granted, that could be argued either way, I did a similar thing with the VPN server answer I made, but I linked the source and said i extracted the excerpts and reformatted to fit the SE system formats

6:05 PM
winetricks hates me!

@ByteCommander winetricks hates most people

It just told me in a very unfriendly way to download it myself... :P

@ByteCommander Yes, it does that for old sources it can't get/verify directly

I literally found the source by copying a paragraph of his answer and putting it into google, google found it word for word

Stupid winetricks!

6:07 PM
lol

it's installing...

not sure it will help, but might be worth a shot

Still the same error, I assume.
No more ideas?

6:17 PM
nah, just found a bunch of messages that say they have similar problems with system.drawing.pen stuff missing...

no solutions?

do you have any of the visual C++ libraries installed?

Erm... Checking
mfc42 vcrun6 and vrun6sp6 are listed with a tick in winetricks.
@Mateo ^

yeah, no ideas

6:32 PM
My unit test is failing in strange ways... must be some sort of race condition...

Aww... Then back to stupid old windows. Or maybe there is an alternative for Ubuntu?

@ByteCommander did you need the 4.0 version - the 3.0 has a portable version
which mean they usually try and do stuff static, and it might work better

@Mateo Thanks, I try...
@Mateo Nope, unfortunately exactly the same behaviour. I'm trying ghemical now, that's for Ubuntu.
No good program... :P
Can I simplify this equation any further? z is the variable I would like to isolate, the rest are constants.

6:55 PM
No, I don't see any way to simplify it any further.
Lol, ReactOS:

a bit too much like windows on that one ;)

@NathanOsman Thanks, I thought so too, but was not sure.
@Mateo exactly what I thought...

It's still very unstable. I got that from disconnecting and then reconnecting the virtual network cable.

anyway, that is probably what that one post was about someone was showing a screen saying "I got a blue screen on linux"

I would have understood if it crashed when you did the same thing with the power cable, but network? o.O

6:59 PM
I'm going to try a few apps and see what works.
(As soon as I can get Firefox installed.)

@Fabby HELP!

@ByteCommander Uhuh?

Why is this formula not working?
The blue formula does not give the same results as the diagram (which is correct) on the left.
Zc is the number of C atoms in the molecule.
While n in the diagram is the number of double bonds.

I don't know any more... You're more advanced then my niece and I have to re-study all these things as I haven't used them for 25 years...

Each formula on its own should be correct.

@Fabby: I recently got an apparent phishing script (or so ClamAV says), but after a further investigation into the file I have found that it contains many URLs etc to a site which I went to today. Is this still something to worry about because this just seems to be cached contents and not a phishing script at all, but then I don't know what phishing scripts normally look like?

Yeah!
I'm here and reading.
Can you post the actual contents of the script?

You need to read more material to become an expert!
You don't need to know everything by heart, but you need to know where to find it...
lemme look in my manual.

Anyone see the last week tonight skit on patent trolls? It was spot on.

I'm feeling better now!

So it is said. So it is done.

9:08 PM
Thanks @NathanOsman - I was just plowing through the first ten or so questions to see if there were any simple to pound out or close ones.

@hbdgaf No software patents in Europe...
(the logic being: you cannot patent an idea...)

Not in NZ either if it doesn't have a hardware component. Idea being that you can only eventually arrive at one correct answer - so you can't say "Whoever solves the problem owes me money."

:)
i'm off! G'night...

night.

user136984
Night! :)

9:38 PM
Wha... why are successive calls to QTcpServer::nextPendingConnection() returning identical socket descriptors???

Is it UDP? nm

Nope, TCP.
I'm thinking it has something to do with the event loop.

Probably... Is this another nested event loop problem?

No, this is in a set of unit tests.
The event loop is only run when I run one of the QTRY_* methods.
So I'm guessing an event isn't being removed from the queue somehow.

Are you sure you're actually closing the socket, so it's maybe not saying "same host, let's just not close that and use the same socket"?

9:41 PM
(Why is it always me finding really strange behavior in Qt event loops?)
@hbdgaf I've got a scoped pointer for the first socket that should cause it to be deleted when the first test ends. But let me double check that for sanity's sake.

It's because you're awesome...
That, or Qt could be REALLY efficient and be using some socket pool... and since you're not generating many simultaneous sockets you always get the first one in the pool.
