ah, i don't think i am familiar with that guy

He was instrumental in getting a lot of publicity for Ask Ubuntu in the early years.

12:36 AM
There's a bounty from A.B. . . .

ah

._. and even though i got upgoats, i am still not happy about my answer

why?

it's too messy, doesn't completely adhere to requirementes, and i had to use multitude of tools instead of one or two

People usually like the extensive ones for some reason

Q: How do I add megabytes to free space when creating partitions to dual boot ubuntu?

chamingtonSo I was using this manual to dual boot ubuntu: http://www.linuxandubuntu.com/home/dual-boot-ubuntu-15-04-14-10-and-windows-10-8-1-8-step-by-step-tutorial-with-screenshots I got into a conundrum when the free space was only one megabyte. My disk space however was ~739292MB. How do I add more M...

@kos @A.B. can you guys throw me couple difficult test cases plz for the script ?

@JourneymanGeek not confirmed, however there is a more interesting study about the ratio length of the index and ring finger.

@Zacharee1 are you serious ? Because i can totally add a function that prints 42 and exits script

@Serg How about what came before the Big Bang?

@Zacharee1 that function would hang, because it would go out of the range of ints and floats necessary to compute what happened

:)

@Seth Special backslash -- doesn't show up here for some reason
@Serg sorry

@Zacharee1 I know. It was a joke. The backslash is an escape character, that's why it didn't show up.

You might want some more explanation, like what you've tried and what errors you've gotten

@Serg I have done already, now added to post
I think because of partition missing in USB

@Ravan indeed could be the case. Do you have any files there ?
If not, reformat it with gparted , create a new partition

@Serg Right now No files,

Good, so just use gparted to reformat it, create new partition

@NathanOsman did you brake the chat ?

So . . . .Was anybody following the bounty from A.B. ? I rewrote my script again. Now it's pure AWK

6:30 AM
@Neil Hello :)

I just found out some idiot started gun fight in a planed-parenthood clinic
Colorado Springs, close to Denver.

6:48 AM
@Rinzwind @Ravan are you guys interested in A.B.'s question by any chance ?

7:12 AM
@ByteCommander the "hide me" bug in the script is fixed.
And some other features were added as well. You'll quickly spot them.
You may be prompted to upgrade as well.

@NathanOsman are you familiar with git ?

7:40 AM
@Serg yup.
What's up?

@NathanOsman I needed to figure out how to update a single file
already figured that out
git add file
git commit
git push

Yup.
We call the first step "staging" the file.
That moves it into a special area where changes are collected until you commit them.

I'll need to learn git a little bit. I haven't used it since summer
And now pushing scripts that i wrote for A.B.'s bounty question there

8:15 AM
I think i need a break from that bounty question . . . I've spend more time on it than on anything else this week

@Serg Yes, I've read, checking it out now. Sounds cool

@Serg Hello my friend ! :)
@kos Hello to you as well ! :)

kos
@Serg Wow you shortened it quite a bit

10:11 AM
@kos yeah . . .I realized that awk can do all the stuff the other script does, and better, and associate all the URI and components . . . I was largely unhappy that i had to stuff up a bash script with bunch of other tools

@kos : Did you see my comment ? :)

kos
@Serg @A.B. Ah an important thing, I just realized that deb archive.ubuntu.com [...] is not a valid URI for /etc/apt/sources.list by the way
Yes @cl-netbox, thank you!
Very nice of you

@kos yeah,it has to be http://

@Serg Do you think this will ever be finished ? =)

kos
@cl-netbox @Serg After the bounty probably :D Do you guys use Atom by the way?

10:19 AM
@cl-netbox I think A.B. required a lot to be met in his question, but i think my and @kos's answers came very very close to what he wants
@kos I was using nano until recently. This bounty question is like one of the first serious scripts i've been developing only in vim
I do have atom though, in one of the virtual machines. . . . i cannot remember which though
is think it's in 15.04 . . . or Deepin
@kos frankly this question drove me nuts . . . .Last few days i've been working on it all night, going to bed at 4 am or 6 am . . .sleep all day, wake up, work on it again
I rewrote it 3 times basically
First time wrote in bash, second in bash, third - AWK

@Serg Yes that is what I told @A.B. before ... very complex ... many requirements ... the only thing that I could do is to upvote your answer and the answer from @kos ... :)

xiaodongjie also did really good job. She also used much better approach - examined software-center's python scripts

@Serg I upvoted the answer from @xiaodongjie as well ! :)

kos
@Serg Yeah, possibly xiaodongjie's script is the finest. I don't know Python, but it looks like instead of parsing /etc/apt/sources.list she used some library function to fetch the data. Way more clean than how we did
Side note: this answer deserves more upvotes: askubuntu.com/a/703434/380067 waltinator's answer above at +7 is wrong.

@Serg @kos I can explain why i used the aptsources although it's very simple structure.

10:28 AM
@xiaodongjie please explain. I don't know even a little bit of python, though, so not sure if i can understand

kos
@xiaodongjie You used some library functions to get the data, correct?

@kos yes, right.
I just want to make it works like Ubuntu Software Center.
Of course I can make a function to parse it.
Python is good to process string and file.

I told A.B. that gui uses python scripts . . . It was just a question of time before somebody figured it out. I think @xiaodongjie's answer deserves more upvotes

I wanted same one to Ubuntu Software Center.
@Serg Thank you, :)
@kos still not clear points?
@kos I analysed the functions getting lines from /etc/apt/sources.list

kos
@xiaodongjie Yeah, however Perl > Python at parsing ;)

10:33 AM
I think that perl supports good regular expression than python.

<.< . . . >.> I only know some AWK T_T

kos
@xiaodongjie I think it's fine, it passes all the tests in the question. I also tested with a massive /etc/apt/sources.list with random entries, seems fine. Doesn't duplicate entries etc.

well . . . some C and Java as well, but those are like . . . to bulky for this stuff here

@kos yes, right.
@kos Perl is very good for string processing, but it have a bad point.
what's the bad point. It's not so good understandable.
Of course it'll be faster for string management than python. it's good point.
@kos right?
@Serg awk is so good. I know just a little about awk than you.

kos
@xiaodongjie That is true. Also Python for this task is indeed better, since you can rely on library functions instead of scraping the file. I assume a dedicated library would do the thing much cleaner.

10:37 AM
Every languages have good points and wrong points.

exactly, every language has its uses

And it's important that how to use.
:)

@xiaodongjie Hello :)

@cl-netbox Hi.

By the way, there's another guy preparing a python script for the bounty question
He was stopping by in the chat earlier

10:41 AM
yes, he is @Sneetsher

He's supposed to ping us when his script is ready. Wonder how that's going along . . .
Mine is probably done . . . I am not editing it no more

Perhaps, his script is better than mine. I wish his script will be good.

will see

Then i can learn more from him about python. I like python. :)

I need to start learning python . . . It's very popular

10:46 AM
Morning, I have five minutes

yes, I think that python is very popular because it's syntax is simple for beginners.
@A.B. morning.

@kos Yes, I know.

kos
I can't grasp how to delete up to the end of the line in Atom. If anyone knows how, please ping me before I voice my disappointment out of the window.

@A.B. thanks , that's pretty useful

10:48 AM
@Serg Somewhere is an interactive thing

@A.B. also is there something like shellcheck for terminal ?
I mean command line syntax checker

@Serg There is one for the Atom editor

-_____-
atom is @kos 's thing

kos
Is that a plugin?

10:51 AM
@kos yes

kos
Cool, I think I'm installing that

@A.B. @kos well what do you know ! It's in ubuntu repos

Q: Tag wiki excerpts - suggestions without usage guidance

guntbertIn the last days I saw a bunch of edit suggestions for wiki tag excerpts that merely described what the tag was about but without any usage guidance. Do you guys think that a question about how to track someone's IP through Tox on Ubuntu would be an acceptable on-topic question here? Because Tox says it is perfectly possible and that it does nothing to hide your IP, but I'm really curious now because I can't find anyone's IP through it (not that I have tried to find the IP of any of my contacts there without their prior permission)... :D

user136984
Oh dear... Immediately as I asked that the whole room fell silent... :D

@ParanoidPanda it would be closed as violating the rules of the site

user136984
@Serg: Ok, which rules?

Oli
1:35 PM
@Serg Why?

"Use of the Network or Services to violate the security of any computer network, crack passwords or security encryption codes, transfer or store illegal material including that are deemed threatening or obscene, or engage in any kind of illegal activity is expressly prohibited" -- Stack Exchange Network Terms of Service

user136984
Ah...

Oli
Discovering an IP address you're connected to is not network abuse.
As much as looking at the number on a house is breaking and entering.

@Oli but Panda is trying to get IP address of another user on Tox

Oli
And?

1:37 PM
Isn't that a potential invasion of someone's privacy ?
it's dawn
O_O oh, gowd, not again

user136984
@Serg: I'm sure that there are many innocent questions one could ask that would potentially do, such as asking how to use netstats to list IPs being connected to. And this is only asking about then filtering that down to a port.

Oli
@Serg No. If they make a connection from to another computer, they're broadcasting their IP (or at least their network's legal IP) to that other computer.
I'm trying to find a physical analogy that makes sense. It's like making it illegal to use your ears to find out whose mouth is talking to you.

@Oli well, you're right . . .

Oli
That's just how the internet works when you have direct connections. Which is what Tox relies on.

user136984
Right, so, should I ask the question or not? :D

1:42 PM
@ParanoidPanda go ahead . . .

Oli
If you don't like that and don't want your "privacy" (not that an IP actually leads to an address in most cases), don't make direct connections or use a proxy network that will defend your location.

Yup, VPN or proxy

user136984
Ok, well, I might eat some cake first, but I'll start formulating the question... With cake! ;D

Guys, should i stay up or sleep ? It's 6:41 am

Sorry, does anyone happen to know how to delete from the cursor up to the end of the line in Atom? I swear I looked this up on Google for a good half-an-hour, the only reference I've found point to a an ambiguous "cmd+K", I suppose that refers to the Mac version. There's no reference of something like that in the preferences. Do I have to add it to the keymap myself?

kos
2:45 PM
And anyway no, that doesn't work. There's a "delete to end of line" reference when hitting ctrl+shift+p which works, but I'm unable to map it to a keybinding.

@kos sorry I can't help you with this. :)

kos
@cl-netbox Thanks, no problem. I'm posting a question right now. I think it's a bug in Atom though, the entry is there but can't be mapped (unless I'm using the wrong editor command)
