Pizza was goot

@SmokeDetector fp

12:50 AM
fp?
Fine post?

I'm guessing "fp" is "false positive".

Aaah
I'm messing with GRUB 2 theming and have set a custom background and custom colors ... but I can't see how to use HTML colors - even though they're supposed to be supported...

1:07 AM
@RPi_Awesomeness Editing files manually or with grub-customizer?

@ByteCommander Manually
I tried grub-customizer in the past and it screwed up plymouth & GRUB 2 pretty bad.
Granted, that was a while ago

uugh. You understand everything in there?

Kinda, I understand the whole theming parts

Which file were they in again?

@RPi_Awesomeness yeah @Nathan is right, but apparently smokey doesn't listen from this room ;)

1:12 AM
@Seth Ah
Yeah. set menu_color_highlight=243,115,32/black should work
But it gives me an error saying that that RGB color isn't valid or something.
@ByteCommander Um, I've been editing the default /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme file.

Hmm, looks like ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics to me... ;D

2:02 AM
kapoof!

http://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/202727/should-i-install-the-intel-drivers-for-linux-to-make-minecraft-faster/202731#202731

Am I wrong?

2:18 AM
I would think it depends on the particular hardware

He is asking would Ubuntu Drivers and the ones from Intel have any difference.

yes, I understand. And I think the answer is going to be different based on the particular hardware configuration.

How so?

so you're asking why I think a generic driver will either outperform or underperform a manufacturer specific driver based on the exact hardware?

IvyBridge has no better throughput or output.
with either driver

2:28 AM
that's irrelevant

Your not making any sense

that's fine... I'm starting to think likewise of you :(

3:05 AM
Anybody in here on poker-heroes.com (running PokerTH)? I wanna play, but there aren't enough buddies around... :(

3:17 AM
@Virusboy i've actually had problems with the ones provided by the intel installer, it would vary case by case. could be better, could be worse

2 hours later…
5:04 AM
Heavens above, help me. I've commented on a Youtube video.

5:14 AM
Okay. Microsoft is doing some pretty cool stuff.
Their HoloLens project looks awesome - I want to try Minecraft on HoloLens so bad.
It's weird to say, but I'm actually excited to see something Microsoft is doing. Windows 10 looks so much better than Windows 8 and Project Spartan looks really intriguing. I hope they release an update for the Tech Preview with Cortana.

omg, what a noob am I talking with. It gets annoying... askubuntu.com/q/577151/367990

@ByteCommander Invite him to chat. 22 comments is a bit much

5:34 AM
@RPi_Awesomeness I would have done that hours ago, but he's a low-rep user and chat is allowed only with 20+ rep! Very annoying!

@ByteCommander Ooo yeah

Hm, he seems to be busy with posting his fstab. What are you doing?

Watching The Tek 0167: Windows 10 - What We Think
Good Youtube channel, definitely one you should watch
They post all sorts of cool stuff

Gosh is he chattering fast! I can barely understand him... ;D ;P
@RPi_Awesomeness HELP! That guy drives me crazy! Is it possible that a system has no /etc/fstab? I managed to get him into a live system within about 10 comments and needed another 30 (20 of them already deleted) to manually mount his hdd "/" partition into the live file system and he still says he can't find that dammmmmn fstab!!!! '@**§$%1=?+>##
Hey! Finally he got the problem! ;D askubuntu.com/questions/577151/…
HOLY SHIT! THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!

Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" played by ArcAttack with two HUGE Tesla Coils as speaker, playing with the lightnings! How cool is this!?!?

That was probably entirely my intention
@abhi: could I? I don't know.

Q: Can't Unlock Ubuntu Account (KDE) with correct Password

MaaxUnable to unlock my Ubuntu session with correct password. I got this solution but it was for Gnome. Need solution for KDE. Thanks.

@Seth: I still have not got the new privilages that should have come with 1k reputation points. And it has been much longer than 10 minutes, it has been many many hours. Why is it not giving me the privileges yet? And yesterday my rep points were at 1,004, now they are at 1,000, but I have not got any downvotes, or anything which would have taken those points away from me, so why did that happen too? Is it really meant to take this long to give me more privileges or is this some sort of bug?

user136984
I mean the 4 points going away for no apparent reason isn't such a big deal, but why haven't I got the new privileges yet? :)

Hellow!
Does this check mark in ubuntu is a single image or it's a settings (orange color)?
I want to change its color.
thanks :)

Q: Curl Command PUT Method

sivashanmugamcurl -i -X PUT -H 'Content-Length: 1000' http://dfdc:dfdc@xx.xx.xx.xxx:xx/directory/ Above curl doesn't produce any response at Ubuntu shell prompt.

2:56 PM
@Seth: As you guys are not online at the moment I have posted about it here: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/247535/… But please do get back to me on this. :)

user136984
3:06 PM
@Seth: Unless my problem has been solved by the time that you come online though. :)

user136984
3:18 PM
@Seth: Ok, it is all working now, so that is good, although I have not received a notification about my new privileges, I now have them! :) It must have just been a really long delay.

3:38 PM
@Toroidal those are probably given at the end of a day. or at least when some software is run to check all users reputation

@Rinzwind Nuked!

@Rinzwind wow that was crap... the rant and comments mostly i mean.
@Toroidal some computations only happen at 00:00:00 UTC

Q: Recover /var/lib/dpkg directory in ubuntu 14.04

Rinku YadavToday by mistake, i deleted directory /var/lib/dpkg using "rm -rf /var/lib/dpkg/*" from my VPS server. Can you please tell me how i can recover this directory ?

@Rinzwind That's unclear? I would have considered it almost spam...
I have to say, Albert is pretty darn awesome and useful
^ ONE BOX NEEDED!
Halp.
I froze my computer and so ran unity --replace from TTY1
and that didn't work, Unity is gone...
I even tried running export DISPLAY=:0
Do I need to just reboot?
@Seth Any idea?
Oh, probably should have said hi first :)

try restarting lightdm. You'll use your work but it is faster than rebooting.
sudo lightdm restart

Thar we go.
Thanks :)

6:02 PM
yeah, no idea how that happens but it does sometimes..

user136984
@Seth :D

6:29 PM
@Seth happens when you leave the title empty :P

6:57 PM
@Rinzwind the system lets you do that?!?

user136984

@Seth and @Rinzwind: That shouldn't be allowed, it should give you one of those red box errors.

Hey everyone, is there a way to get basic hard disk info like manufacturer, model etc.?

@DemCodeLines Hi there.

@JamesKayla hey!
I have Ubuntu 13.10

@DemCodeLines Well... I'm not actually sure. I think... no, I don't know. Maybe there's an option somewhere to view it?
Look for some kind of system diagnostics tool :)

7:24 PM
I had Windows installed, but it crashed because my hard disk went bad. So now I need to get another hard disk, but I don't know which I am supposed to get. So I had an old Ubuntu 13.10 Live CD that I booted, but I don't know how to get the info.

user136984
Well this is a bit of a rude title! :D

Q: Having A Shitty Shitty Time Installing Ubuntu (Dual Boot Windows 7)

Daniel GroomsI'm trying to dual boot Ubuntu with windows 7. I need Linux for my research project, but would like to keep windows as I am familiar with it and it is not even half as finicky and bug-logged as ubuntu. It has been my severe displeasure of trying to install ubunutu recently, and I am having the fo...

@DemCodeLines lshw

ishw? wassat

More precisely

7:26 PM
lets see hardware :D
(kidding)

$ sudo lshw | grep -A 20 disk: | grep product
                product: ST3500418AS
                product: WDC WD15EARX-00P
                product: SAMSUNG HD204UI
@JamesKayla ls hardware, list hardware.

ah ok

You can install it with sudo apt-get install lshw

@JeffreyLin hai

pretty sure it comes default @terdon

7:27 PM
You can also install the GUI: sudo apt-get install lshw-gtk

user43095
So I think I just rm -rf 'd my home directory.

but then I might have forgotten I installed it.

@Seth Oh, OK then.

@JeffreyLin Were you removing steam?

I think I just installed it recently but it was on Debian

7:27 PM
@JeffreyLin :|

user43095
@Seth No, I was trying to unencrypt my user directory and didn't realize that $PRIVATE is the home directory.

ah.

user43095
So is there anything I should do while still pseudo-logged in?

@terdon Do YOU like cake? Sorry... can't... stop... with the cake..

Ummm. Ooookay

7:29 PM
@terdon >:D

user43095
I'll probably need a new user account as there's currently nothing in /home

@JeffreyLin Not much as far as I know. You can save any files you happen to have open but apart from that, if you really ran rm -rf ~/ you're up the proverbial creek with no paddle in sight.

@terdon go on, admit it... you love cake.
2

@JamesKayla Shhhh, not in public!
2

@terdon xD (i'm in a taggy mood today)

user43095
7:31 PM
@terdon Using ls in Terminal shows nothing, but User Accounts shows that my account is still active.

user43095
Alright, time to log out. I'll be back later.

@terdon I was dared I could mention cake to a single person multiple times. I've done it!

@JeffreyLin Well, yes. You have a few things in RAM probably but none of the stuff you need. Your data, photos etc.

user43095
@terdon "xyz could not be found. Perhaps it has been deleted".

user43095
I logged in through TTY1 and it says that since there's no home, it's temporarily setting /=HOME

7:36 PM
lshw lists all hardware, any way to get just hard disk info?

13 mins ago, by terdon
$ sudo lshw | grep -A 20 disk: | grep product
                product: ST3500418AS
                product: WDC WD15EARX-00P
                product: SAMSUNG HD204UI

user136984
Oh dear... Sometimes I want to flag something up but don't know whether I should put "Too broad" or "Unclear what you're asking"...! :D

jrg
@Toroidal link?

@RPi_Awesomeness fun show

@jrg link to what (I know you're not talking to me, I just wanna know :D )

user136984
7:41 PM
@jrg: Maybe it's just because I am unfamiliar with the software but I found it a very broad and a little bit of an and unclear question: askubuntu.com/questions/577412/xrdp-configuration-for-account

jrg
Oh, @Toroidal - that is vague.

user136984
@jrg: And this one too is extremely vague, I mean I know what they are saying, but they don't provide any real information to help us help them solve the problem: askubuntu.com/questions/577414/gedit-hangs-and-crashes

jrg
@Toroidal so i'm going to spin the question back around to you - what is your recommended action?
do we drop a comment on the question asking for more details, do we close it instantly, do we ignore it?

user136984
@jrg: I think that we should comment asking for more information, and then if it becomes clear that not enough information is known to help us help them then we should close it.

jrg
@Toroidal OK, so we've left a comment (hypothetically). Then what? How long do we wait?

user136984
7:50 PM
In other words we should try to help first, but then if it becomes impossible we should close it.

jrg
A day, a week, 2 months, a year?

user136984
I would wait a day.

user136984
Or 2.

jrg
Cool. So then do that. :-)

user136984
@jrg: Ok :)

7:57 PM
@Toroidal: Humans are human and react humanly... The guy/girl/neuter in this question is so preoccupied with his problem ans is so upset that he just forgets anything else. So get your imagination out from under the dust and use humour to bring his 2 feet back on the ground... (see comment I just left)

@Seth think I read it somewhere. That text is shown in the title area and when left empty is used to make the title.

user136984
@Fabby: Yep, humour is always good! :D

Damn! I missed the removed comment! >:)
'I've been playing perfect host to my guests tonight and spending more time in the kitchen then on AU... ;-)

user136984
The stared questions thing has an RSS feed logo next to it, does that mean that you can set up your RSS feed so that it gives you all the stared posts as they come or something? :)

are there any ghosts online at the moment?
@jrg ^
just kidding
I'M not a ghost.

user136984
8:09 PM
@JamesKayla: What you believe in ghosts? :D

user136984
And that they can use computers?

user136984
:D

shh, i'm not allowed to talk to you, says seth

user136984
@JamesKayla: What do you mean seth says?

:x - as in, tape over mouth

user136984
8:11 PM
What?

user136984
When you say seth, do you mean the moderator? Or someone/something else?

Seth the mod. tapes mouth over again

user136984
@Seth: It seems that this guy (@JamesKayla) is talking about you... :D

:@ How am I trolling? I simply said that Seth told me not to talk to you. Now, leave me alone.

user136984
@JamesKayla: Ahh, now I understand and remember. Yes he did.

user136984
8:17 PM
So why are you talking to me now again then?

user136984
:D

user136984
And why are you off my ignore list, now that is the real question...

user136984
Hmm...

user136984
Odd.

user136984
Ahh... Finally got it working again.

user136984
8:20 PM
@JamesKayla: I am pleased to inform you that you are now safely back on my ignore list. ;) :D

user136984

user136984
Isn't it?

user136984
:)

yes
recording...

@Toroidal Correct.

user136984

user136984
Well I am installing that now... I heard it is a great program so I hope that it will turn out to be just that! :D

user136984
Ahh... Yes, much better.

user136984
Yep! Vim is definitely a great program! :)

user136984
8:29 PM
Does anyone know a good RSS reader for Ubuntu?

jrg
@Toroidal It's not ubuntu-specific, but I use newsblur.
it's a good little google reader alternative.

user136984
Is this its website: newsblur.com ?

user136984
:)

jrg
Yup.
it's open source, and you could self-host if you wanted to.

user136984
@jrg: Interesting... Well it looks good! Thank you! :)

jrg
8:32 PM
@Toroidal I pay for it, only because I like supporting stuff that I use.
Same reason I don't have adblock on SE.
but the free plan is good as well.

user136984
@jrg: Thanks again! :)

jrg
@Toroidal you're welcome!

@Mateo Yeah. I found them off a LinusTechTips video, I really like it :)

user136984
@Fabby: Thanks! :)

user136984
8:46 PM
I have managed now to setup my RSS feed reader so that I get all stared things in this chat! :D

Just saying... vim is a great editor if and only if you use it min. 8h/day... Otherwise: It's good to know the basics (how to edit a file, delete some lines, insert some lines, save that file) but for the rest: Forgeddaboudit!
[Grinning, Ducking & Running like hell! ]

jrg
Hey, I don't use vim for 8+ hours a day
i use it for about 4
the rest of the time i'm using emacs
(not kidding)

user136984
Yeah well emacs is a good program too, it has everything you could possible want, even dungeons and dragons game! :D

user136984
It is so packed that I can't find the hex editor feature in it! :D

Oooh, I can haz chromium inside of Qt instead of a stripped down webkit now qt-project.org/wiki/QtWebEngineHowToTry
On the vim thing, there are lots of interesting vimrc files floating around. There's even a set to turn it into a ruby with syntax highlighting code editor floating around somewhere.
Okay, so there's more than one

I'm going to neglect to re-post the emacs butterfly flaps its wings emacs comic here...

@Toroidal: Confess: you're a girl, right?
The "Do you guys like my new profile picture?" is starting to get really girly or really...
Erm, something else... [G,D&R]
@hbdgaf: Please do???

user136984
9:11 PM
@Fabby: :D No, last time I looked I was male, and I doubt that anything has changed since then, well anyway I hope that it hasn't! :D

@Fabby it has been starred thousands of times. this is only in case you actually haven't seen it

:D Good one to remember... "Last time I looked"! ;-)

user136984
@Fabby :D

jrg
Hey, emacs is powerful. there is no denying that.

@Toroidal: Is it an original or is it common in the English language?

jrg
9:13 PM
so is nano.
just in a different way

heh

user136984
@Fabby I think that it is probably common. :D

@hbdgaf: for some or other reason, I never saw this one!
@Toroidal: OK, here's a common one in Flemish, but original in English:

Maybe you just haven't been around long enough. I've seen it enough times that it feels like bombing the room to post it.
@Fabby Last time I checked - is a common sarcastic remark... that basically says something is obvious.

OK, thanks for the info! (not easy for a foreign language speaker to get all the English nuances...)
So, you're walking down the street and you see a girl afar...
And you think: "Wow!"
And then she comes closer and closer...
and your spirits go up and up...
and then she's next to you...

9:17 PM
then you see her adam's apple. had that happen once.

and then you go like "Meh..."

user136984
:D

@hbdgaf :D The kinks, right?
@Toroidal: and now comes the best bit:

"Are you working today?" you're standing there in uniform "Last time I checked..." as an example on the other one.

then you say:
"Beautiful from far, but far from beautiful!!!*"

user136984
9:18 PM
:D

And in Flemish that's just a common expression, but in English, if you say that yo your friends,
They'll go like "MAN! YOU ROCK!"

user136984
:D

I don't fire on people like that.

user136984
Nowadays it would probably be more like "Yo that's cool fam ain't it?"! :D

OK, now on to another vodka and ice tea...
Move along, nothing to see here...
Tipsy rambling going on...
@Toroidal: fam?

user136984
9:20 PM
Or "blood".

Atomic fireballs for me. They're delicious.

user136984
It means family.

user136984
So what they really mean is "Mate".

@hbdgaf: You've completely lost me (or I'm drunk)
Please elaborate...
Fire = firearms???

atomic fireball - 151, cinnamon shnapps, tabasco - tastes like spicy candy and gets you... less than able to think.

9:23 PM
What's 151? 1/7th Cinnamon, 5/7th Schnapps and 1/7th Tabasco???

@jrg Have you committed to the vim proposal?

jrg
@Seth I don't believe in it enough
i followed it
but i don't believe that vim needs its own site.

D:

jrg
every single question that i've had about vim fits into SO, U&L, or AU.

actually, I mostly agree with you.
You know I rather agree with you. I can see where emacs could form a site and where vi/vim might not be able to quite make it. I see where vi/vim is probably working just fine elsewhere on the network. But what keeps me coming back to this proposal is the hope that I can become part of a community centered around the use of vi/vim. A place where I can learn from the experts and even share my somewhat limited knowledge. Something to create and build a community on. A few tags scattered across the network is not a solid (nor easy) base to build this on. — Seth 2 hours ago

jrg
9:30 PM
TRue!
perhaps we start vimcussions.com
and it's just a discourse instance
idk.
because about half the things i would want to do with a vim site wouldn't fit into a Q&A
it would be a "Here's a cool trick..."

user136984
Well... Goodnight guys I'm off to bed now! :D

@jrg that

9:46 PM
Hey guys. I need some help.
Dunno if you can see that, but my screen is all squashed and weird
I took my desktop to a friend's house and plugged it into their big screen
The BIOS splash, GRUB, & Plymouth all showed up correctly, at the right resolution
However, the login screen was only about a quarter of the correct size.
If I log in, I can move the visible screen around by moving my mouse, but the click locations were all off.

@RPi_Awesomeness: and you're back home and it persists?

@Fabby No, I'm still over, trying to get it to work :P

tv?

Yeah. 32"

TV's are weird: depending on what TV programs they watch and what kind of "zoom" or "overscan" they've set their TV to....
... don't try to mess up their TV...
Anyway, go into the TV settings, note what you've changed and when you leave, put it back where it was, or they'll hate you!

Ask Ubuntu is not a script writing service. If you have a specific problem while converting your scripts then please ask away but we won't do all the work for you. — Seth ♦ 5 secs ago

@Seth: Although at AskUbuntu we don't mind helping you out by overcoming difficulties or correcting errors you might have writing your own scripts, we do mind a little providing you with a complete finished script with little or no work from your side... ;-)
That one is so polite it's just plain insulting! >:)
