6:00 PM
@hbdgaf It exists.

Bye :-)
Gud ni8...

That's the percentile. your rep gain/total rep gain would be a very small number. :(

Also, Wolfram's SE has the Pi post: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/3141592
Seems legit.

Yes, but if it was toggle-able it could give an interesteing perspective

We should have a "rivalry" feature.
A user can declare another user their rival. If the other user accepts the rivalry, both users lose 100 rep. The person who gained the most rep at the end of 7 days gets +500.
Also, why should we even downvote? We only lose rep.

6:07 PM
@muru Also, that's not percentile.

@Whaaaaaat that's percentile score, not percentage of all rep.

@hbdgaf Meh.

@Whaaaaaat downvoting is for the health of the site. if you've never downvoted, you're not helping.

@hbdgaf I try to, but the loss of rep is not attractive really.

6:15 PM
my downvotes are about ten percent of my upvotes. so assuming i vote equally on questions and answers just think about how much i gave out versus how much i lost... gave out: 3000 rep. also, there are situations where you get rep from downvotes back.

6:27 PM
I don't mind down voting answers. Low quality ones generally get deleted soon.

@Rinzwind what?!?!?!?!

@muru that, and if it gets downvoted several times, it goes almost unreadable/invisible so people don't even get hassled by it as much

my meta questions are the best.

You know what would be neat? A food truck with a different ethnic/regional menu every day of the week. Then you could get/give variety and keep the same customers/food source every day.

6:46 PM
that would be neat.

You could call it the international or something. I'ld eat there.
@Seth are you actually using suse, or is it just a lizard gravatar?

1 hour later…
8:23 PM
Question for basically anyone...It's rather opinion-based, so please don't start a flame war :D
I've got this terrible terrible Windows PC (not just because of the OS, Specs are :P too) and I'm reinstalling Windows to try and regain some semblance of speed.
And at the same time I would like to install a Linux Distro, just to see if I can't start converting my house, and also because Linux/Ubuntu is quite often faster than Windows.
The specs are:

Processor: AMD V140 @ 2.30GHz (64bit)
RAM: 2.00GB
HDD: 250GB
I've got three distros in mind: Vanilla Ubuntu, Lubuntu, and Elementary OS Luna and I would like to know, which of these do any of you suggest? @Seth @hbdgaf @Rinzwind @Mateo?

I use Xubuntu. That's all I'm saying.

Fair enough. :)
My experiences with Xubuntu were...sub-par. Now, that was two years ago, so things may have changed. I will look into Xubuntu :)

I like it, but it behaves like I expect, so... Also, it can't be THAT resource intensive if UbuntuStudio uses it for the quasi-RTOS version of ubuntu

That would be an awesome canonical question if it got good answers... "I want to reskin Ubuntu to look like another OS. What options do I have?"

8:35 PM
Installing uTorrent now for downloading of ISOs...wonder if I could get Transmission for Windows...
It could, yes

@RPiAwesomeness you can.
who says all the good questions are taken ;)

@RPiAwesomeness arch :=)

@hbdgaf I might steal that idea

Thing is ... you are asking me to decide between the OS I use and 2 I never have used @RPiAwesomeness
@hbdgaf yes I did!

8:39 PM
@Rinzwind hehe...remember...this laptop will be used by 8/12 year olds...it needs to be relatively user-friendly for a beginner :D

;) It's cool, I just don't recommend arch to people that haven't used it already.

@RPiAwesomeness Edubuntu

@RPiAwesomeness EDUBUNTU

@Rinzwind Arch is for newbs. Compile it from scratch.

@Whaaaaaat grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

8:39 PM
@Rinzwind NINJA'D

@hbdgaf I do! cuz then they NEVER EVER ask that question again
3

okay...just had a huge lag spike. Just tack that onto my list of reasons why windows sucketh

@Whaaaaaat LFS is for people that want to understand the underlying layers... or people that are all "I want commercial performance, and I don't mind feeling like that girl in the movie hostel."

You guys are seriously suggesting Edubuntu? K'doke...of to research that :)

@RPiAwesomeness hey if it is for 9/12 year olds then also get the games installed for them ;-)

8:41 PM
@hbdgaf More like Jurassic Park.

@Whaaaaaat that movie was sooooo flawed :-P

@Rinzwind I've actually considered ARCH for myself and then install Unity or LXQT on top of it

@RPiAwesomeness what would you call that monster? Unarch?

@Rinzwind lol

8:43 PM
@hbdgaf @Whaaaaaat?

@Rinzwind I'ld call it unsupportable.

@RPiAwesomeness oh a spin on Urchin -> Archun :D have all kinds of squid as icons

Have you seen anything about LXQT? It looks really nice

@RPiAwesomeness Conceptually I like it, but it hasn't been around long enough for me to be sure the glimmer won't leave its daddy's eye before it's born.

Wow...Edubuntu comes with a lot!
Wonderful...Transmission setup isn't responding...WINDOWS

8:46 PM
I got 99 problems and msi installers ain't one. #WindowsProblems

@hbdgaf I had 99 problems, then i used DOS. Now I have 586134184554150418 problems.

bedtime :=) bb2morrow

later rinz

8:51 PM
what would you guys recommend for an EXTREME performance pc?
budget is not a problem.

you are not allowed to ask diametrically opposed questions... but i answer the same. if it performs the best, it doesn't matter what it's running on. it's still the best mix of awesome.

@RPiAwesomeness haiku or Solaris ;)

@Mateo I think someone is copying the Rinzwind approach.

I do like the every window is a tab thing though...

That's why gods made i3. I like it, but it's not for everyone... or for me all the time.

I watched this from a thread somewhere else... I think I peed a little youtube.com/watch?v=qz5i171h_no#t=21
The title does not reflect the content

Change the "s" to a dollar sign... he wants them to still get hacked doesn't he.

did i tell you about my latest 3am 2 hour endeavor?

Das is me:

@RPiAwesomeness ikr, i was all - kill me now. people believe this shit

9:15 PM
@hbdgaf I don't think you did yet

@hbdgaf What were you like that for? I'm like 'cause Windows

@RPiAwesomeness I'm like: cause everything.

again.
I can't even run the stupid thing as Admin WINDOWS!!!!
gah

That's because windows doesn't run anything until you use azure... then it can run mysql and all the other niggly bits in the cloud ;)

Haha, yeah you have to pay extra for all that...

9:21 PM
Boy microsoft...you sure know how to make things obscure. Does anyone here think that pressing Ctrl+Shift+Enter is a logical key sequence to make something run as admin?

ctl shift enter was used because it wasn't used for anything else except virtualization. so clobber keystrokes your best users probably use.... no wait...

Could be worse

yeah, it could override alt-f4

Yeah...i suppose...I'm just in screw you Microsoft mode right now

@RPiAwesomeness I'ld be careful about posting that... people have flagged and gotten honored less valid things for offensive.

9:25 PM
true...
Is a Windows-induced rage usually considered relatively okay for lack-of-thought on AU?

What did Pi do this time?

there's no rage here. just saying, you might want to think it out a little.

@RPiAwesomeness Depends...

I hate Windows, but I'm stuck with it.
I'm writing this on a Windows PC (don't lynch me plz!)

@Whaaaaaat Heck, I'm on one too...we can suffer together under the oppressive arm of Closed-Source Software based in Richmond

9:29 PM
once Skyrim and MS Office come to Linux, Windows is getting kicked to /dev/null

lol...you can't use Libre/OpenOffice?

Add-Ins.

You could always emulate for MS Office and Skyrim

Also MS Office is just more feature-filled and user-friendly IMO.
They did a good job.

@Whaaaaaat ah. For work?

9:30 PM
Yep.

I pity you.

I tried emulating Skyrim. I took \inf-1 arrows to the knee.

@RPiAwesomeness Someone else might still flag, but i might have flagged something like that if it was someone I knew less, or if the violence was less directed at yourself

9:31 PM
4FPS in low mode.
In Windows I get around 70 on ULTRA.

I'd call that lag.
Yeah, emulating takes a lot of processing/RAM.

Also Camtasia

Flippin 'eck! MS WTH are you doing? STOP RANDOMLY CLOSING WINDOWS WITHOUT MY PERMISSION!

And Adobe CS6.
Gimp is really good, but it doesn't cut it.

Yeah, a lot of people need MS and MS software for work and play. Stinks that closed-source (MS in general) has so permeated the software world that few people can get away consistently.

9:34 PM
Once Office gets ported to Linux, the number of Ubuntu users will skyrocket.

But it's getting there. MS only has ~14% market share...what with Mac, Android, and Linux

Also, all the other big programs will get ported.

@Whaaaaaat I wouldn't be surprised. But MS will never do it. And I mean never
I'd put money on that

Not unless someone became the new Microsoft CEO.
Let's call Jon Skeet.

lol, yeah...

9:35 PM
@Whaaaaaat Try Krita

No but really. If Office comes to Ubuntu, Dragon will follow, most games will follow.

'allo? Yeah, Jon Skeet? We want you to knock off Satya Nadella from his place as head of World Crappy Operating System Distributor.

Bring Office and the rest comes.
We need you to begin working on the Office4Linux project.

Oh yeah, if Office comes, lots of stuff will follow. But I seriously doubt Office will ever be officially ported (at least for a long, long time)
Or that...Reverse-engineering...here we come :P

The universe will die from entropy first.

9:37 PM
Prolly

You know what.

Dangit...always forget that my internet speed plummets when I have a torrent running

I'm going to keep my computer on Windows.
That way, in the year 7424, when Linux has 99.99999999% of the market share, Linuxers can see how bad life was in 2014.

googles how to reverse engineer software
Boo...I'll be dead then

googles how to cryogenically freeze one's self
I think this is the most off-topic chat on all of SE.

9:40 PM
lol...no kidding

But really...Microsoft is loosing ground. Chromebooks, Apple, Android, Munich Council, UK announcing Public documents will be in ODT...it's a start

I just want working OneNote. I don't care if it's in Wine or not.
Also, once the US government switches to Linux...
[Censored under Patriot Act]

@Whaaaaaat "They" already uses it...

lol. NSA! BEGONE FROM HERE YOU FOUL BEING!
And that whole argument about Linux being hard to use...Bull. Ubuntu, Mint, Elementary OS...all easy to use and good looking

9:44 PM
I don't even use the Ubuntu GUI.
The terminal is good enough.
(except for Minecraft)
I never liked Unity though.
It was always too tablet-y for my tastes.

I've only ever used Unity or LXDE...the only things that have run well for me. I tried using GNOME, but it was too slow. Looked nice though

I grew up with Gnome 8.04, so...

Yeah...I started using Ubuntu as my main OS mid-2013...

sweeeet. i get dreamspark.

I'd had it since late 2011, but never really did much with it...I had XP and that was fine for what I was doing...

9:52 PM
SWEEET. Server 12 for free.
Microsoft is nice to students.

heh. nice.

I was going to have them running to Tux, but I couldn't work it out...would've taken too long to do

Fenestra VIII est peccatum!

No clue what you just said...but okay

9:58 PM
It's latin.

Well..yeah. I figured that

Windows 8 is a sin!

lol
Agreed

8.1 fixed a lot though.
still not good, but.
It's an improvement.

Yes...an improvement. However, unless you have a touchscreen, Metro SUCKS

10:01 PM
I have a touchscreen :D
It's actually very nice.

I g2g...dinner time :D

A: RegEx match open tags except XHTML self-contained tags

bobinceYou can't parse [X]HTML with regex. Because HTML can't be parsed by regex. Regex is not a tool that can be used to correctly parse HTML. 10:25 PM
Who uses zshell?

I use DerpShell.

do you play in shell at all?

10:41 PM
ah'm back. And I see nothing of interest has happened other than a Cookie Monster-user has asked a question!

Cookie Monster?

It looks like a cute version of Cookie Monster to me...

11:35 PM
@Whaaaaaat Dunno if this is acceptable or not...but...

@RPiAwesomeness I'm watching Game Theory. This better be good.

@Whaaaaaat Ooo...sorry. Game Theory is rarely acceptable to interrupt
I'm going to delete the one-box and just have the link
just in case...
Which one be you watching?

latest one.
rosalina unmasked.
i watch all of them regardless of whether i played the game or not.

Ah...haven't seen that. Was my image borderline acceptable?

Bent logic is bent.

11:38 PM
??
Is that in reference to my image, or GT?

GT.
In GT, bent logic is bent.

Ah :) GT is amazing though :)
Yargh. My internet sucks really bad. I can't even watch 360p without buffering

Q: How much research effort is expected of Ask Ubuntu users?

BraiamEveryone has (or so I hope) read the Help Center and the How to Ask and they put some guidance in what to do before, during and after asking a question. Now, there's a part that has been worrying me immensely and is this: Search, and research Have you thoroughly searched for an answer be...
