can I run a script in a tty and still have it interact with my GUI (F7)

as long as you set $DISPLAY, sure

I was just looking at this script, it seems to be a persistent running one, and was wondering if I could put it in the back without using the regular terminal emulator

A: Script doesn't run via crontab but works fine standalone

hbdgafOne thing at a time: First let's give you a user based bin folder: cd ~/ && mkdir bin You want to use crontab. Let's start with something really simple: * * * * * touch /tmp/testing.txt Okay, so that works Now let's try running a script that does the same * * * * * /home/username/bin/to...

@Seth is this really a dupe?

@AvinashRaj nope, weird, I was sure I voted it yesterday

this reeks of "you said i couldn't, so i did" docs.docker.com/installation/windows
@AvinashRaj - don't delete your asked crap in chat. it makes people not answer you ever and start ignoring you
in answer to what you deleted data.stackexchange.com

btw, try to avoid "problem" in titles

The point was that the previous edit bumped mergelist off the side of a scrollbar to try and hide it, so I made it blatantly obvious.

I don't think this question is a duplicate, but a bunch of people say so. Am I missing something? askubuntu.com/questions/506582/…

> Can you tell how to upgrade Ubuntu 12.10 to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS or any other version

The question asks "How do I upgrade from 12.10 to something modern since it's end of life do-release-upgrade doesn't work" and the duplicate is "I want to stay with this end of life version of ubuntu, how do I install software from an exotic repository"

@JohnBaber the uestion might be a little different, but the answer is identical. in that case we usually -> canonical

1:14 AM
@JohnBaber err... no

The answer to the "duplicate" doesn't help with the original question at all. Ashish seems to be asking a legitimate (and difficult to answer) question.

no. you've got two people saying it. i'll go find more if you need it.

@JohnBaber in 10 words tell me what OP is asking

"How do I upgrade from 12.10 to something supported?"

What you need to do in order to do so?

1:17 AM
"or upgrade from old unsupported release? "

Yes, upgrade from an old unsupported release.

see the dupe

@hbdgaf I don't remember that scene... is House MD alright?

he'll be alright, just needs a little pain medication

What's recommended there doesn't work for me in the same situation.
The accepted answer and others seem to be saying what it takes to see old packages.

1:24 AM
then figure it out and improve the answer... what are you trying to do and how is it failing... be specific.

@JohnBaber what dosn't work where?

^^ what are you trying to do and how is it failing... be specific.

Replacing urls in source.list with old-release doesn't make `do-release-upgrade` work.

did you do sudo apt-get update?

Yes.

1:26 AM
then purge the ppas you have installed, unpin everything you have pinned, and upgrade

and what machine?

I have a small arm box, that didn't have a trusty image, and didn't properly upgrade, I just changed the sources to say "trusty" and did dist-upgrade, there are certain situations, but we need details

In trying to mess figure out the answer to the problem in the first place, I kept replacing things in sources.list
Eventually I had `pangolin` everywhere when I'm really quetzal.
I think I've fixed the source.list and am apt-get update-ing again.

1:31 AM
@JohnBaber lets do this. Ask a question with the exact error everything is throwing, the contents of your sources.list and the output of apt-cache policy libc6

basically did this to it:

Yeah if what I'm doing now doesn't magically work, I'll make a proper question.

I'd love it if some strong-arming like Mateo is describing would just work.

@JohnBaber isn't that more a downgrade?

1:32 AM
It sounds like you're trying to do something against what you're supposed to do. Pull out any non-mainline stuff. Increment your release and dist-upgrade one at a time until you hit LTS. Then you can leapfrog. Going backwards is bad. You're bound to paint yourself in to a corner and build a worse problem than you started with...

well, it dosn't work very well...

@JohnBaber if everything fails: backup and reinstall

The one at a time was the plan, but I was trying to deal with the fact that dist-upgrade wasn't working.
@Braiam: Nooooooooo
It's my fault for installing a non-LTS.

It only doesn't work because you pinned something or have a ppa activated.

1:34 AM
Woohoo, do-release-upgrade is trying to work.

way too much to mess with, but if there is a perfectly fine image to start from scratch with, you should do it

This is a remarkably specific problem (the fake 'pangolin' being in there.)
Yeah, this seems to be working. Thanks for being rubber ducks!

So, it's not a dupe because you created a corner case impossible to arrive at by using things the way you're supposed to and now you want it not to be a dupe? or it's solved now?

Oh yeah, my case is too weird and specific.
It would just be noise to have it as a question.

>.>

1:36 AM
No, that question's a dupe.
I thought it wasn't working because the answer wasn't correct, not because I had a weird problem.

ah, the ppa's then?

@JohnBaber lets do this. Ask a question with the exact error everything is throwing, the contents of your sources.list and the output of apt-cache policy libc6

Were they actually being looked at despite the # ?

1:42 AM
doesn't matter if a package is installed. if you install blarg_i_want_to_waste_time.deb and don't purge the package despite someone saying purge your ppas, you built your problem.

I'm not denying that the problem was created by my meddling.
I didn't understand "purge your ppas".

17 mins ago, by hbdgaf
then purge the ppas you have installed, unpin everything you have pinned, and upgrade

ah, include sudo apt-get update/upgrade also

Or unpin pinned things.

yes, they're as possible as one another

CSS... >:(

@NathanOsman what did it do this time?

Spent at least two hours today trying to tell a <div> to fill the remaining space of its parent.

@JohnBaber if you continue to meddling you could cripple your system or have some weird cruft out the upgrade process that can cause problems later, and everything could be avoided if you just backup/reinstall

@NathanOsman css is a pita that way

Even with JavaScript, it was nearly impossible to achieve the desired output.
@hbdgaf It's just not cut out for vertical positioning.
I might have been able to accomplish my goal with tables... but I was too exhausted to try.
I finally gave up and let the <div> just be as large as its contents.

1:49 AM
@NathanOsman screw_it_set_abs_dims_and_pos(get_res());

I'm tempted to start writing something in JavaScript that abstracts CSS's box model and presents something simpler.

three div's with percentages

// Something like this
var box = new Box();
var layout = new Layout();
layout.add(

);

yes, like that

Q: How can I ensure a DIV stretches to fit its contents?

Hi @terdon . How r u?

@AvinashRaj Fine thanks, on holiday :)

3:24 PM
@terdon why don't you come to SO?

Why should I?
I go there sometimes but I find the fastest gun in the west type answers annoying and the place is generally too aggressive for me. I don't enjoy it so much.

3:46 PM
yep, fast and correct answers will help you to earn more reps.

Exactly, the whole thing works for reps. I don't like that.
The rep-whore culture of SO is very tiring.

you could see me here stackoverflow.com/users . It's all because of you ...

Heh, good for you :)
At some point I'll spend enough time on SO to get 10k so I can see deleted posts.

I'm sure, you should reach 10k in SO within 2 months..

Is there a reason I keep getting more flags?
Like to use

4:15 PM
@NoTime Yup, you're getting more rep. They go up as your rep does.

@terdon ok where is that actually on the site? (doesn't need to be specific page, just not sure where it says that)

@NoTime Not sure either, let me check.
@NoTime At the end of this page:

@terdon well it's not my rep :/ I guess my flags are just helpful

Apparently so :)

has anyone ever had the problem of your computer (according to htop) not swapping?
right now.. I am running high memory usage (close to 75-90%) at all times and it doesn't appear to be running anything through swap files
I had default swappiness of 60, and did a temporary swappiness of 80 to see if that would do anything, but wonder if that is why I have been locking up a lot lately

@NoTime Do you have a swap partition set up?

yes.. I am looking at free -m and it is showing 1933 available 0 used
swappiness at 100
(temporarily)
i just did swapon -s
it's showing -1 priority (not sure what that means or how to change it)
looking online for this..

That's normal. Or at least, that's what I get too. I'm pretty sure that's the GRUB priority.
Hmm, no, not sure what it is actually.
You might want to post a Q. Either here or on U&L.

I just have no clue why this happened :/
I'll go to UL
I am sharing a swap partition. maybe debian isnt letting go

@NoTime Yes, you're likelier to get an answer on that sort of thing there.
