Q: Trying to SSH to local VM Ubuntu with putty

wickywillsI have found similar questions in my searches here, but most of the answers are way above me at the moment, so here goes. I have set up a VM of Ubuntu server, have installed OpenSSH, and am now trying to connect to it using Putty. Within putty, under "Host name", I put "Ubuntu", given this is wh...

@Takkat I'm guessing it's a server then? Lynx is pretty old desktop wise..

nope still a good old Athlon dual core here on the desktop....
...but there still are plans to upgrade the mobo in autumn (or so...).

mm, that is a bit too old for me ;p
I like to stay rather cutting edge.

I would have changed it long ago if only it had issues... but it hasn't any.
but my kid's box now has a quad core so at least sometimes I can feel the difference.

Always nice to have a computer without issues.
@Takkat The old desktop is an old dual core Athlon. Still amazingly fast compared to some of the other computers in the house.

8:50 PM
yeah these were are great CPUs
but for gaming it is a bit sluggish... and my virtual machines would certainly profit from more cores.

Loads better than the ancient Cyrix I had as a teenager. It doubled as a space heater, but it was faster and cheaper than Intel - and I hadn't caught on that AMD is built from awesomesauce and unicorn parts :)

:) my desktop CPU runs with 45 W only.... to get that from Intel it does not leave anything left ot build around it.

Make sure you retrieve your files from Ubuntu One, after July 31st any remaining data will become inaccessible. For migration options see the Ubuntu One downloader and mover IO.

That needs stars.... :)

The only way you don't know that is if you haven't read your email in like 6 months ;)

8:56 PM
I just realized yesterday that my Ubuntu One client on Windows doesn't sync my old Deja Dup backups, so I'm scurrying to go get them.

Backups should never be needed anyway.... why not make new ones?

I have a few files in there I want. Didn't restore it because I didn't think I'd need it. Forgot a specific folder :-/

<-- has about 100 backup CDs from the Old Age somewhere in a dusty box on the attic
Forgot to sort them by date... ;)

I keep all my really important stuff on floppy disks <-- @Takkat

Some of them even have backups of my old 3.11. program settings on them.
Got rid of all floppies last time we moved home.
Soooooooooo many good Atari ST games... :"(

9:00 PM
I was totally kidding btw.

anybody want to help this guy to actually ask a question? askubuntu.com/questions/501284/…

@fossfreedom nope
I've never understood how people essentially say "This is all awful, and it works for lots of people... but obviously it screwed everything up - not me. Then I have these other 2 corner-case issues and possibly a third. I need you to help me... HALP ME! Also, your OS sucks and doesn't deserve a single user."

for this issue there is no other help than Windows, I guess. They should not use Ubuntu.

It reminds me of some business fellow I spoke to at one point. He made the really interesting case that you don't necessarily want EVERY customer. You want customers that are reasonable, to which you can provide a meaningful service, and who don't expend more resources than they impart.

Don't expect Ubuntu to do what it should, tell it to do so.

9:15 PM
I agree with that as well. I also just agree with the human component of don't spit in someone's face, then have an expectation that they'll help you.

if you don't help me i'll shoot my leg!
^^ found it!
