8:00 PM
@Venki I just did

@Andrew Great! thanks!

@Venki Are you going to give me that 50 rep now?

Someone send me some Bitcoins :D. Please? No?

@Seth BTW if I accept an answer and give it a bounty I can still edit that answer after that right?
@Andrew Sure..but please be patient ...

@Venki yes

8:01 PM
@Seth OK

@Venki after the 4 days The highest upvoted answer will get half of it.

@Mateo - there you go.

@Andrew You must have got it now...havent you?

@Venki NO that was the other one that you give it too. Al ways I will vote your post for that :3
@Venki right?

No I accepted your answer and gave you the bounty man!!!
@Andrew

8:04 PM
@fossfreedom cool, looks good

@Venki I was just joking with you!

@Andrew A pre requisite for a joke is that it should be funny and that wasn't funny! I just got afraid for a sec that i gave my 50 rep to the wrong person!!

> Thank you for reviewing 20 close votes today; come back in 3 hours to continue reviewing.

@Venki that why I did it!
Who My rep is just geting up there. I get 194 today

@Andrew For all the pain in the image editing job you deserve it!!!

8:09 PM
@Andrew please post those icons on GitHub - just in-case that drop-box file gets deleted and then the answer becomes useless.

I've got an answer on tip of my tongue. Testing now.
Answered @Venki Let me write up an explanation. Can you test in the meantime? It worked for me.
I guess you might want the explanation first.. Nevermind.

@fossfreedom If they get delected I will reupload them... I don't use GitHub or have an account, so can you do it for me?

@Seth Ok ... remember to read the comment that says I need to use inkspace to edit .scg files!!!!!! Answer accordingly.. i will edit the question accordingly in the meantime...

wait wut
This got a lot more complicated all of a sudden.

So after I earn 200 rep today I can earn any more, right? Because I am near that cap

8:14 PM
You don't mentioned inkscape in your question

200 is upvotes - you can earn bounties and accepts ontop of that 200

@fossfreedom so if I get 200 rep in just editing questions, I can still get more from it?

@Seth I just did ...!! :-P Sorry!!

dunno - I dont know if edits are counted in the 200

nope. 200 max except bounties and accepts.
Any other way you can get 200 counts afaik.

8:18 PM
so, you can get up to 200 reputation, from upvotes, everything else is outside that count

I wonder if the "Thinking with Time Machine" mod works with the Portal 2 beta

@Venki Try that
Seems like the other guy has a good answer though.

@Seth how do I remove ppas please help

@Seth instead of * I must give my directory right? In the case presented in the question it is ~/Pictures

@Venki Hmm. You might do that. It'd be better if you just cd to the directory you want first.

8:23 PM
@mojo706 the same way you added them but with -r

@Braiam ahaha thanks

@mojo706 start at the very beginning and explain what you want. But what Braiam said works.

@Seth Right.Also did you check the link I provided in the question?

yeah
why?

@Seth beacuse it seems by the answer you provided I must copy the files mentioned there into a sepaprate directory and then run your script from there and then copy the edited files back there....

8:26 PM
no no
You want to do the ones in /usr/share/unity/icons right?
So run cd /usr/share/unity/icons to go to that directory and then run it.

yes but I dont want to open all the files one by one there in /usr/share/unity/icons .. I just want to open a select few(mentioned there under"Alternate method")

Ahh. I misread your comment on the other answer.

for the next poor soul that do that

@Venki You should be able to do what the other answer says then, replace * with the list of files you want.
The only problem is I'm not sure I can test that.

finalterm.org <= I need this on 14.04 someone help :)

8:33 PM
@Seth Ok.. but will that open files consecutively one after the other after closing one? I mean if I have to add the file name each time it would be a waste .....
Or
Should I add it like this: for i in /usr/share/unity/icons/1.svg 2.svg 3.svg

@Venki it will open one, you edit it, save it, close it, and then it will open the next

@Seth By 'next' you mean the immediatly next file in the directory? Note that the files needed to be opened need not be found one after the other inside the directory!!!!

Yeah, I've edited to fix that.
I guess I got confused someone along the line. Between chat, question, chat, edit question, chat, my cold and other stuff IRL I'm not too surprised.
Sorry.
@Venki So the first guy's answer should work fine.
from what I got to see of that message, yes.

Im a fool. Using an LTS for testing unstable stuff

I'm just going to delete my answer since now that I completely understand it's the same as the first.

8:40 PM
I had actually not read your edit then..after doing so I removed my previous message.. so I am just downloading InkSpace with my slow internet and it is about to complte.. when it completes I will get back to you to say if it worked fine!!

It's inkscape right?
I couldn't find anything called inkspace.

Yeah whatever .... BTW dont delete your answer..lemme try both
yours and the other one...if it doesnt work i will tell you then you delete it...

@Venki okay, but in the end they're both the same, except mine checks if your input is a directory, which it isn't going to be now that I understand.

Hmmm...

My cold is really bothering me today, I'm going to step away for a bit. talk to you all later.

8:43 PM
later

9:05 PM
Idea: canonical question for installing Realtek wireless drivers?

9:20 PM
@Richard Don't we have one?

0
A: How to revert to GNOME Classic Desktop?

AndrewStep 1. Install Mate, Gnome Flashback, or XFCE 1a. Installing Mate If you are running 14.04 fellow this instructions. Click this link to install the Mate package, find it in the Ubuntu Software Center, or type sudo apt-get install mint-desktop in a terminal. There are more instructions here I...

@Seth Thanks for your answer! I will try sudo inkspace now....
@Seth how to give root permissions to a file from command line?

I don't understand. You don't give root permissions to a file.
Better start with the problem, and then discuss how you think you should fix it ;)

No... Lets say I select a file and right click then go to properties.. In that the Owner must say root ..how to do that?

@Seth setuid :P

9:34 PM
@Venki You want to change the owner of the file to root?
What file is this and how are you getting it?

Yeah right

@badp well.. sorta :P
@Venki You should be able to use sudo chown root fileName. Can you answer my last question though?

Well it is .gimp-2.8 and I try to get to it by sudo nautilus..but the moment I right click and select properties nautilus closes showing an erroe message...

What error?

Cant see it...it closes before i could read it!!

9:37 PM
Ah. What does the terminal say after it closes?
You shouldn't be using sudo for graphical applications though.

Well..now that file has root ownership ..thanks to your chown thing..it worked but now the answer you think is good aint working!! First it opened but I couldnt save files .. but now it wont open at all...

well yeah, you don't have access to it anymore.

I tried sudo gimp and sudo inkscape though(separately ,of course)

Again, start with the first problem and then we can move on from there.

First problem?

9:41 PM
At the moment, I have no idea what exactly is happening on your end. Why did you want to change the ownership?

Ok... I will put a long post now... you must wait patiently...

both my answer and his answer should have worked right away as long as you used sudo before gimp and inkscape.
@Venki ok

First I tried Nattgew's answer with gimp(no sudo here). It worked and opened the image file. But I couldn't save it. Then I tried your script and it worked just fine as I had commented in your answer. Now I tried Nattgew's answer with sudo as you said. But now Gimp said I didnt have permissions(though I used sudo). So I went and changed the ownership of .gimp-2.8 to my user name.. Now I ran it again and it threw the same error. So I wanted the .gimp to get back to its root ownership.
There is more.. wait,...

alright

Then I couldn't change it and asked you about it. You said "chown it buddy!". I did it and its ownership is now root. Now I run Nattgew's answer and nothing opens......

9:47 PM
Okay, so what was the first error you encountered, as much as you can remember?

Oh c'mon!!!
let me tell you my present error? I try Nattgew's answer .. nothing opens...

well we'll see what we can do with that.
Give the ownership back to yourself:
sudo chown youUserName file

Ok.. on it now..
Done

Try again. What happens?

@Seth I'm talking more for all the models... rather than just a bunch of mini canonical questions for each model. The steps are mostly the same, go to the website and download the tar and compile it... except for a few, which would too be included. hmmm

9:55 PM
Okay tried again.. this is the exact error in the terminal ....
GIMP-Error: Could not open '/home/venki/.gimp-2.8/themerc' for writing: Permission denied
So chown themerc?

@Venki What does ls -l .gimp-2.8/themerc say?
@Richard Wait, are you talking audio or wireless?

Wifi

Whatever it is, might as well post on meta with all the information you've gathered

Hmm okay

@Seth
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 306 Apr 26 03:20 .gimp-2.8/themerc

9:58 PM
Okay, my bad. Run: sudo chown -R userName .gimp-2.8
Replacing userName with your username ofc.

Okay...

We needed to set R for recursive.

OH!! so that we can chown username all the files inside too..

just me or /review is slow...

Sometimes review glitches.
@Venki yeah
and into any other folders.
Progress @Venki ?

10:05 PM
Okay. I UNDERSTOOD THE PROBLEM!!! (JUMPING IN VICTORY) If I use sudo in Nattgew's answer nothing opens...

Even after readding yourself as the owner?

Yes

And you don't get any output?

Exactly. Remeber I am using sudo before the word inkscape(or gimp) in Nattgew's answer...

What folder are you in now?

10:07 PM
In ~/Pictures ... but if I use /usr/share/unity/icons too the same problem occurs...

Weird. Does my answer still work? I doubt it.

Okay. I didnt try your answer with sudo and without those double brackets..will try now...

cool

I tried your answer with sudo..it worked.. but threw the error I had shown you.. then I removed the double brackets and the error also disappeared..so your answer works like a dream as I had said before!!

Huh, that is odd.
Well without GIMP's first error I'm afraid there isn't anything we can do now.

10:15 PM
first error?

Something about not having permissions that made you change the owner.

Hmmm....
But I dont see how the problem has to occur coz of that.. because your answer works!!(remember I am running your answer as a separate executable .sh)

true.
What is the full prompt and command you are running from his answer?

Sorry?

So the userName@host:~$ theCommandFromHisAnswer
(basically the entire thing)

10:20 PM
Ok.. will post it..wait..
Here it is:
venki@Venkat:~$ cd ~/Pictures
venki@Venkat:~/Pictures$ for i in 1635553-1360x768-[DesktopNexus.com].jpg; do sudo gimp $i & read -p "Press [Enter] key to continue..."; done
[1] 25447
Press [Enter] key to continue...

[1]+ Stopped sudo gimp $i

Ah. Remove the & from the GIMP command and try again please.

There is no & ...?????
Sorry sorry I see it

gimp $i &
ah ok.

This is what happened now(nothing opened):
venki@Venkat:~$ cd ~/Pictures
venki@Venkat:~/Pictures$ for i in 1635553-1360x768-[DesktopNexus.com].jpg; do sudo gimp $i read -p "Press [Enter] key to continue..."; done
[sudo] password for venki:
Unknown option -p

@Venki for i in 1635553-1360x768-[DesktopNexus.com].jpg; do sudo gimp $i && read -p "Press [Enter] key to continue..."; done

10:26 PM
^^

Ok..will try

Guess that was a typo on the answerer's part.

NOW IT WORKED Thank you @Braiam and @Seth
@Seth Probably edit the answer?

yeah, it's just missing one character. Edit the answer.

AU says EDIT MUST BE ATLEAST 6 CHARACTERS ...

10:30 PM
I'll do it.

<!- extra description of edit -!>

that works to

great...!! Now to edit Andrew's answer...let dropbox fly away!!!!!!!

hm, you sure he's okay with that?
dropbox is probably easier than manually editing it with a script (maybe I don't understand)

HE MUST BE.. I HAVE GIVEN HIM 'MY DEAR' 50 REP!!!!!!!! Anyways, i will let that be there and just edit the alternate method....

10:34 PM
who here uses BT?

Big Tables?

@Mateo haxxor

@Mateo BitCoins

@mojo706 ;) I just put a address in my profile

WAT?

10:44 PM
but, yeah. I only have dust
@mojo706 saying that I'm not speaking for my workplace, they have a social media policy

@Mateo also means your words are opensource cause they belong not to anyone?

suppose so, the stack stuff is creative commons

@Braiam what?
I must say plank is just beautiful

11:06 PM
Hello
Is anyone one?

hi

why the hell was this closed? it is the reference question on the backup tag: askubuntu.com/q/2596/8500

What is up?

good
i am trying to install ubuntu
but only the tty's
how are you?

@psusi too broad, long list. we always close questions like that, pages and pages... no clear answer

11:10 PM
that's why it is a community wiki

@GeoMind like the server?
@psusi doesn't matter

and it is what we dup all of the other questions of "how do I backup" against

@Mateo I am so close!

? why would you do that

then by that logic we should close this one: askubuntu.com/q/30334/8500

11:11 PM
@Mateo you mean the chat or the .iso ?

which I have to say, is utter nonsense... these are excellent questions and this one should be reopened

> You voted to close this question Nov 25 '13 at 3:27

@psusi yes we should
also note:
> This question exists because it has historical significance, but it is not considered a good, on-topic question for this site, so please do not use it as evidence that you can ask similar questions here. While you are encouraged to help maintain its answers, please understand that "big list" questions are not generally allowed on Ask Ubuntu and will be closed per the FAQ.

we are taking a less lenient standing @psusi

how is it not a good question or on topic? it is a frequently asked question with a massive number of upvotes

11:13 PM
@psusi upvotes, views, or answers doesn't matter
quality is quality
and that doesn't fit the site

@Andrew Now see your answer!!!!!

the question is high quality, as are the answers
how doesn't it fit the site? it's a very common question for ubuntu users

@Venki I am looking at it

> hello guiz, I want a list of cupcakes, plox?

@Mateo @Mateo you mean the chat or the .iso ?

11:14 PM
@GeoMind oh, sorry was talking to someone else on that,
desktop or server?

@Mateo k

check the don't ask @psusi

@Andrew Wait I forgot one imporatnat edit!!!

@Venki to late

so this should be closed flat out as off topic? askubuntu.com/q/455521/8500

11:17 PM
@Mateo the downloading of ubuntu server is finishing, and i have mini.iso opened in oracle VM and i am installing

I can't think of a better question for the backup tag than "How can I backup my system", yet you seem to be saying that's off topic simply because there is no one perfect answer

@psusi nah, downvote...
@psusi you know what would be a perfect question? "How to do automatic backups with deja-dup?"

@psusi No, it's probably CW just cause it has so many answers. Up until this week, Qs with more than a certain number of answers became CW posts.

too narrow of a scope... first they have to know what deja-dup is

@GeoMind hm, interesting

11:18 PM
or, "How to create an image of my / partition?"
@psusi exactly! it shows some kind of effort
that's the kind of question that SE looks for

more often than not, it shows a misunderstanding... the image backup question is a perfect example

lazy question "GIVE MEH TEH CODEZ" and "I HAV A PROBLEM, SOLVE PLS" are bad examples

the better answer is you really shouldn't... you should have a look at these first, but if you really must, here's how

@psusi the problem with the 1st one you posted is that 1) It is asking for comparisons, which tend to become opinions very quickly and 2) it is asking for a long list as an answer. Both of these would be enough to make it a bad fit for any SE site, AU included.

hence, the broader question that is frequently duped against that lays out the whole thing

11:20 PM
@psusi there are limits to how broad you can be
if we take that ad absurdum we would have a mega question "how to ubuntu?"

@Mateo i am not sure, but i think that mini.iso contains the same things as the desktop.iso ad it downloads them. If thats happening then i lost my time with this :P

and that's not the objective of SE

yes... and if we take it with some common sense, "how to backup ubuntu" is not too broad

but "list me all the back up tools" is

same thing

11:21 PM
@psusi No, of course it's not. The question you linked to asked for a comparison between different backup tools, that's too broad.

@Braiam LOL

How can I backup is a perfectly good question. What's the best backup tool is not.

so change the wording to "how to backup ubuntu" and it amounts to the same thing

@psusi that way you invalidate 30+ answers immediatly

no

11:22 PM
@GeoMind yeah, I think the mini downloads the other stuff on install, might be a problem if you have an interesting Internet setup

@psusi read the answers and tell me, do any of them describes how to use the tool and do a backup?

they all describe "how to backup"

@psusi That's just it, it doesn't. Look at the answers. Not one of them explains how to actually use these tools, which directories to copy, which to leave alone. None of them tells you how to do a backup. They simply describe the various tools.

@Mateo i just want to start up my computer from tty. i will use it in a VM and my laptop my lag with unity in VM

@psusi really? dejadup, the most upvoted do a sort of description of the tool with 2 screenshot, you think that's a good answer for someone asking "how do I do a back up using dejadup?

11:24 PM
you ask people to do some basic research before asking a question... if reading that list isn't basic reesarch then I don't know what is

What a night for me!!! I have worked a lot... (pestered @Seth a lot too!!! Poor guy, he had a cold too. Sorry and thanks to him!) BTW my work hasnt gone unrewarded I now have reached 500 rep.. anyways i havent been notified of any privelege though..yet I am happy..learned a learned a lot.. thanks guys! BBL!! Its 4:53 am of 26/04/14 here... Gotta go! Ciao and Cheers till next time!! :-)

Come to think of it, "how do I backup" would be closed on sight as too broad as well anyway. We need users to search before posting.

@terdon you think that moving those list to the tag wiki's is a good idea?

@Venki so he told you to not use !/bin/sh?

that wiki is is the basic research they should read first

11:25 PM
@Braiam What do you mean?
Adding the list of tools to the tag's wiki? No! That's not what that's for at all.

Hey guys, get off the back up question and help me. Do you know to open tty at start up?

seems like that's what it's for to me... "start here"

@terdon something like this stackoverflow.com/tags/java/info
a full course into the topic of doing backups

@psusi I agree that that list is actually a useful resource. If I could I would close it but not delete it and put the "This is a bad Q but we keep it for historical... blah bla" message on it,

No.. but to remove [[ ]] to change to a [ ] .... As i said gotta leave.. sorry cant talk to you now!!! My eyes are closing without my permission... I have got to chown root my eyes!!!!
@terdon

11:27 PM
@GeoMind Wow, that's really not a good way to get help. Wanna chill a little?

Q: How do I disable X at boot time so that the system boots in text mode?

Olivier LalondeIs it possible to disable X at boot time? I'm setting up a server so it would be nice if it wouldn't load the graphical interface every time I boot.

it would link to "how to do a backup using X" and a short list of the common backup tools, FAQ, etc. etc.

@Venki You won't be able to close them :P

A link would be useful yeah. I just wouldn't want to have a long list of software in the wiki itself.

@terdon long list no, just an intro

11:28 PM
@Mateo Thanks

the common backup tools, etc....

why not? seems perfect to me... here's a list of options that link to good questions that detail how to use each one....

@Mateo I didn't found this before

Yeah, OK, might make sense. I though you guys meant to put everything from that backup Q into the wiki.

@terdon the "list of popular frameworks" but with backups stackoverflow.com/tags/python/info
@terdon of course no!
that would be in each tool tag wiki, perhaps

11:30 PM
@Braiam Wow, that's actually really cool. I thought the tag wiki length was limited to something much smaller.

btw, can we dv this? askubuntu.com/a/16373/169736

And i have another question

Pes'to

With Server i can have a web site at https:// xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx ?
i know html so that will be easy for me to host my site
Sooo anyone here ?

11:34 PM
@GeoMind We're waiting for you to get to an actual question.
@Braiam Done and commented

Q: Copy a long single-line text from a terminal with undesired change-line

TimI copy a single-line text (which is a long path output by locate ... | less) from a terminal by mouse selecting the text, and then Ctrl+Shift+C. The text spans several lines shown in the terminal, although it is actually a single line. When I paste it into a text file, I get unwanted change-line...

@GeoMind you mean with Ubuntu Server? Yes but the details will depend on many things.

@terdon yes

@GeoMind Yes but you can also do that with normal Ubuntu.

like webmake is a script that creates the public_html folder

11:36 PM
What do you actually need? You want a website that is hosted on your personal machine?
If you just have a normal internet connection, especially if you're living in Greece where the ISPs suck unfortunately, that webpage will be very slow.

i do not have a website, but i am thinking of this.
I know :(

@GeoMind Kai egw...

Nice to meet you. i understood this from Pes'to

It's really not worth it. You can get very cheap and even free webhosting, setting it up yourself is only worth it for the fun of it.
@GeoMind :)

My father is thinking of having a website for his shop
I am a computer science student so i am thinking doing this my self

11:40 PM
@GeoMind Then just get some cheap web hosting, don't bother setting it up yourself. Seriously. A website hosted using a normal ISP connection will be next to useless.

@terdon I tried once but the host wan't good quality so i forgot it :P

@GeoMind You can get some pretty good deals. FOr example, I've set up webpages for the both of my parents

@terdon Nice

We pay something like 9$ a month which is what, 6-7 euros?

yeah i think so
@terdon This sounds nice but i want to give a try first

11:43 PM
You can get cheaper deals too.
@GeoMind Go for it, but I'm warning you, the page will be so slow as to be unusable to anyone not on your home LAN.
You can find the instructions on setting this up here:
You then need to get a domain name, point it to your static IP or get a dynamic one and you're all set.
It's just very slow.

@terdon This one (domain name ) cost i think

@GeoMind Depends, the .gr ones are relatively cheap

@terdon i have heard it
So you are in France?

They used to be free 10-15 years ago.
@GeoMind Not right now, I'm in Greece for Easter but yes, I live in France

@terdon Nice
Ok thanks for the info
Tell me something more
It is easier to host in Server or Desktop ?

11:49 PM
@GeoMind Easier in server since it comes with a lot of the necessary tools installed out of the box.

@terdon thanks a lot

@GeoMind You're welcome

through this sounds interesting, but! SE won't implement it meta.stackexchange.com/q/230507/213575

Nice to see you here. Bye

Bye!
@Braiam Yeah, that does look interesting.
