@Seth heheh, true. I would've just manually redid the patches, because I'm anal that way, copy them out, remove them from the series, then manually reimport them
but again, i'm crazy

I started from scratch 3 times.. So I guess I'm a lunatic :P
I still haven't found the best workflow for this stuff yet..

@Seth the best workflow is: "It didn't work. Must need a bigger hammer"

In regards to my flag on this one: askubuntu.com/questions/540734/… the OP shows output indicating ath9k, but talks about broadcom drivers. The answer I flagged as NAA took the broadcom bait. It's not a broadcom question.

Q: Distribute like Ubuntu on Red Hat

emckApologies if my terminology is off, I'm very new to the Unix environment. @fossfreedom regarding declined flag on askubuntu.com/questions/539996/…, only a moderator could refund the bounty and thus remove the offensive wording on the bounty notice. Hence the flag.

@muru its offensive - not spam - hence declined. Anyway - I've dealt with the OP appropriately and tidied stuff up.

@blade19899 No I mean on every input box like edit summary on edits

Double click in the edit summary, and it will give you a dropdown menu

It's not working on chromium but it opens automatically when I typing in firefox

Hhmm... I 'm on Windows(sadface), work pc. Can't install chromium to test it.

8:06 AM
:((
Yes I think it works on windows by double-clicking but not Ubuntu ;(

@fossfreedom I did spam it as offensive, not spam (you might have mistaken it for my spam flag on this). Thanks for the clean-up, though.

ok - no worries - sorry for the confusion.

@MadaraUchiha, have you tried Popcorn Time. It has Anime support now(OVA, TV, Movies.)

@blade19899 meant it for the thumbs-up emoticon. :D Now I'll never look at it the same way again. :P

Q: What should I do when answering a question that has already been answered corrcetly?

WhaaaaaatI came across a good question the other day and I would like to answer it. However, somebody else already answered it (and has received upvotes). However, the answer is very general and does not give specifics on what to do. It is correct and is the same as my method. Should I add my own detail...

@jrg Here is my build right now: pcpartpicker.com/p/YhcDmG.
I'm considering changing the CPU to an i5-4690k...maybe :P

jrg
12:15 PM
@RPiAwesomeness ok. I don't remeber. Will take a look when I get home.

@jrg Kewl!

12:41 PM
@RPiAwesomeness I always check to ensure whatever I get has hardware virtualiztion enabled. That, to me, is even more important than clock rate.

@hbdgaf Oh very true!

Try asking the fellow at Best Buy or WalMart if a particular model has hardware virt and watch their face go all blank...

@hbdgaf VT-x?
lol

@RPiAwesomeness VT-x if you're an intel guy or AMD-V if you're an AMD guy. I, for one, am a dyed in the wool AMD fellow... I don't hate on intel people though. We're just different.

@hbdgaf Ah.
I considered AMD for a while. Then people convinced me Intel was better...I wonder if sticking with AMD would have been a better idea price/performance wise with all the deals around the FX-series CPUs...

Oli
12:52 PM
The last time I bought a CPU, the Intel i7 920 was the best of all worlds... And given it's been five or six years and I still don't need to upgrade it (it doesn't even feel slow), I'm either getting old or the power of a CPU just doesn't matter that much any more.

I've always been an AMD guy. Some things seem to be more stable on intel - and I'll admit that fact. Price for performance ratio - AMD consistently out-performs. Features are more consistently unlocked - like hardware virt and overclocking on AMD also. I think you'll find people that have an - it should work OOTB and just be stable...

@Oli Oh my, lol

(Windows, Mac, Server, Business oriented people) tend to be Intel people. Tweaker/modder/technophile people (at least in my experience) tend to more consistently lean towards AMD more consistently.

@hbdgaf Ah, well, I'll definitely consider AMD in the future

I didn't say that to change anyone's mind. It has just been my experience. Others may disagree.

12:55 PM
I want to eventually do a mITX build in the orange version of the BitFenix Prodigy and get some custom panel-work done - have opaque acrylic cut in the shape of the Ubuntu logo and a space for the acrylic etched in the side-panel...maybe even custom orange/aubergine LEDs

@RPiAwesomeness You'ld also want to remember that Intel tends to offer more business niche features, like built in lojack-y stuff and they're working on location awareness for access rights ACL stuff too. At least that's what their marketing cruft said some months ago...
@RPiAwesomeness If I build a desktop again, I'm building a clear acrylic case. Clear standoffs and all. Just hardware suspended in a see-through from every angle box.

@hbdgaf that would be pretty awesome

Then if you wanted custom looks on top, you could add another sheet of acrylic with colored LEDs at the edges and see if it seems to pass through the acrylic but refract at the logo so the light seems to emanate from the rough edge. Seems like it might work.

I am holding off on buying a CPU until @jrg finds out what CPU he has at home...if it's not one I like, I'm probably buying the i5-4690k. $210 isn't great, but it's $20 off

My system build approach used to be watching barebones kits (mobo+cpu+integrated graphics?PSU?Case) for something that didn't suck bad enough that I didn't want it. Then getting a working thing that didn't suck all at once. Stepping through adding to it as it felt like it needed (video first, then expanding RAM, not usually processor)
It seems you're the opposite sort of person though. You add a lego at a time instead of getting a block of clay and adding to it/subtraction from it.

Oli
1:03 PM
@hbdgaf Just keep in mind that acrylic softens above 80°C. CPUs and GPUs operate pretty close to that, occasionally above. I'd be extra careful with things like a heatsink brace behind the CPU.

@Oli Oh defs. For some parts I might opt for plexi or real glass grommets

jrg
@hbdgaf My desktop is a AMD A8(?).
I also decided that I wanted to tinker with a Intel NUC. So I have one of those.

@jrg No, the spare one you said you had.
Do you know what socket?

jrg
@RPiAwesomeness I don't know what socket the intel proc i have is.

1:06 PM
@blade19899 that thing is a monster.

jrg
When i get home today (5:30), I'll dig it up.
@RPiAwesomeness sorry for confusion. Meant to ping someone else with that message.

I once built a System that had a motherboard support for dual xeon processor, two video cards, and connect the video cards together with a cable, 8GB DDR3 rams, 320GB SSD, 4TB of harddrives.
That was like 2010. Bet you five bucks, that guy isn't thinking about an upgrade anytime soon

@jrg I think I stand generally correct in my previous observation since I read you as a tinkerer at least as much or more than you WANT to be a server/business guy... you just also happen to be a server guy ;)

@hbdgaf Yeah. And i 'm getting something similiar as what i mentioned above... If... I can rais some money.

jrg
@hbdgaf In 4 years when the desktop is feeling old, I will probably be going intel though. Mostly because I'll be installing some sort of VMWare container desktop widget.

1:10 PM
Correction, it was 16GB DDR3 RAM. That beast was a titan among men

@jrg You don't think VMWare is performant on AMD? It worked fine on my older AMD lappie just fine. The only reason I'm running Intel on the box I'm on now, is it was an incredible clearance deal on a touchscreen ASUS at a local brick and mortar. If I were building I would choose otherwise. What motivated the switch?

jrg
@hbdgaf In my (albeit unscientific) tests, ESXi/vSphere prefers a intel.
However, if I went with a openstack/Xen based solution, it wouldn't matter.

@jrg That is probably the test bed. It's sort of like how Nvidia got into a spot of trouble for sort of bribing game studios with free pretty incredible hardware to design on their platform.

jrg
@hbdgaf Yeah, probably.

@jrg So your decision is virt/server/business related. Yes! Winning :)

jrg
1:18 PM
@hbdgaf if its any consolation, I'm not the kind of person who makes decisions on computer hardware 4 years in advance.
Entirely likely possible that i'll just rent from a secure, open source, non-NSA-lovin', cloud provider. When the time comes.

@jrg It's fine. I still like you jrg. It's not like you said you prefer emacs butterfly wings to sublimetext and/or eclipse for required kit in a GUI environment or anything ;)

jrg
lol

yes, that was a joke It wouldn't change my opinion even if you did, but I thought I'ld slide in some funny.

2:03 PM
@blade19899 meh, that's a minimum for one of my workstations now ;p

> I once built a System that had a motherboard support for dual xeon processor, two video cards, and connect the video cards together with a cable, 16GB DDR3 rams, 320GB SSD, 4TB of harddrives.
^ Still a minimum? :)

@blade19899: Yup, I almost went with 32 ;p

@JourneymanGeek Damn... I want your system

@blade19899: I saved for over a year ;p

Why doesn't Ubuntu have a better messaging system? :/

2:06 PM
AU or ubuntu?

@JourneymanGeek Damn... I don't make money as much as you do... I have to save for over 2 years
Ubuntu

@blade19899: I get an allowance of 300 a month

On my Ubuntu i just the standaard notify crap
I can't click it away,

I just cut back on... well nearly everything else.

@JourneymanGeek Damn :/ I life on my own. Rent and everything.

2:08 PM
Kinda helps that I could walk to school ;p

I work in a different city...

@blade19899: What I did was planned a system, put aside money for it every month. By the time I got it, everything was a generation better and slightly cheaper ;p
When I get a job, I'm planning on getting a razer blade ;p
(I'd say 100-200 bucks a month should do the trick in a year and half ;p)

@JourneymanGeek I'm lucky if i have a hundred bucks left by the end of the month

@blade19899: then put a little aside. ;p
Oh, and I'd add that system started as a old dumpster c2d

@JourneymanGeek And buy me a machine in two to three years.

2:12 PM
Got a case first, then started gradually upgrading
@blade19899: or parts of one

Hey vegetarians! Plants are living, intelligent beings, too!. Have a heart. Eat a rock.

@Whaaaaaat rocks have micro-organisms on them so you can rule those out too

Space dust perhaps.

and don't get any ideas of disinfecting them, because you would be destroying billions in the process

@Mateo Too late. /me boils rocks
Who knows? Maybe rocks are also sentient.
somewhere very very deep down

@Whaaaaaat Save a plant and a mammal. Only eat animals ranked as predators.

5:30 PM
@hbdgaf Cows are grass predators. I can eat them.

@Whaaaaaat Then you'ld only be saving plants. You know what I meant.

And pigs eat some organic stuff... therefore... bacon!
(I'll do anything to justify bacon.)

for every piece of bacon you don't eat I'll eat three...

@NathanOsman Your lack of bacon-based easter eggs on your website is disappointing, then.

@Whaaaaaat You still haven't found them? :P

5:31 PM
@Mateo You'll be fatter than the sun in about a few seconds based on worldwide bacon consumption

@NathanOsman I found a local place that sells whole pigs and a really interesting butchering pigs video. Checking prices to see how much I can save breaking down a pig in to usable pieces instead of buying it already broken down at market...

@NathanOsman I had a web-bot click every possible link

cheater.

@Whaaaaaat no just based on your lack of bacon consumption... I never said the "worlds"

this conversation has attracted at least 5 users to this chat.

I consider plants to be sentient beings from outer space higher than any other lifeform in terms of intelligence, so I just ignore them and eat meat.

Is there a badge for earning 20 bounties or 1000 rep for bounties?
There should be: Bounty Hunter (Si)

5:38 PM
It's "Earned more than their rep cap for X days"
And, nobody has it.

Some of the badges are impossible

nope. they're all possible. some are just significantly harder on AU. like all badges on SF.

Tell me how "Illuminator" is possible.
500 answers +edits to the same question in 12 hours?

@Whaaaaaat you're reading that wrong

Edited and answered 500 questions (both actions within 12 hours

5:41 PM
edit a question and answer it within 12 hours. get a score of more than one. that's one. the accomplishment window doesn't have to be satisfied all in half a day.

seems legit.
And, the Analytical badge is impossible.

jrg
#smart
@Whaaaaaat it's a legacy badge.

@jrg ik that. exactly why it's impossible

sorry you slept in...
I was here on time ;)

;)
it was actually one of the easier badges to get at the time

5:48 PM
I managed to get that one with one line of jQuery.
3

totally... it was one of the easiest.

jrg
Yeah, was typically the first badge.
@NathanOsman I REMEMBER THAT
you went to like, every site and did it.

Took me longer to write the jQuery than reading the FAQ, but...

@jrg it just didn't mean anything because people didn't actually READ to get the badge. also, it wasn't one of my first. i had to go back and tag out each section individually after getting a good many others.

Now. to hack and get the badge to confuse everyone :D
(not really)

5:50 PM
I had unsung hero on SU long before I got the "I read the FAQ" badge.

@Whaaaaaat you can still read it, but I don't think you will get the badge: web.archive.org/web/20120121020239/http://askubuntu.com/faq
(will take a while to load, it is a time machine ;)

you people only have badges. But i have a hammer :-)

You don't have a hammer. Oli, jrg, Nathan, etc have a hammer. That's why their name shows up in blue...
I also don't have a hammer

:-)

5:57 PM
what is with SE and unicorns?

@Whaaaaaat you should have googled meta.stackexchange.com/questions/122026/…
@AvinashRaj beautifulsoup is a nice library
@Whaaaaaat with the added bit on that it's a tech company, so most people get that unicorns are new "magic" features. a piece of software can be built from unicorn blood in that it has loads of new features that you want, but have no idea how they work.

oh man, is anyone even on this one anymore: ubuntu.shapado.com/questions looks like it has descended into spamalot, and where spanish questions are going

@hbdgaf Hey !

@user3197452 ohai

Remem long back we had a convo regarding vlc not centering the seek bar in full screen mode ?
Turns out it is a result of multiple workspaces ... Fixed it by keeping the multiple workspaces number to 1 :D But no multiple workspaces tho :/
Watsup with u btw ?

6:09 PM
@hbdgaf oh man, how about this:

@user3197452 working on interesting stuff and playing lots of BL2 thanks to @Mateo - who is super nice and awesome btw.

Lol ! Nice video :D

multiple workspaces AND multiple screens? and somehow going to single workspaces fixes it? or just multiple workspaces?

@Mateo 10 hours straight?!

I would have put a shock exorcist thing with a scream in there somewhere....

6:11 PM
multiple screens had nothing to do with this apparently ( atleast I assume so ) the multiple workspaces set to 1 fixed it ...
@Mateo yea full 10 hrs :O

aw, the music repeated...

I guess its a bug in VLC ... where do I have to report it ?

This seems like the right place to start launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vlc but you might need to go upstream if they say so to get to the devs
And, it can't just be multiple workspaces, or everyone would have the bug... and I don't.
It's probably a xinerama or something related unexpected "feature"

Oh ... perhaps it got active when I started using multiple screens and persisted for multiple workspaces ...

probably.

6:14 PM
I used multiple workspaces on multiple screens.
That was back in the Trusty days though.

that should mean If I turn multiple workspaces again ... should go away ... I'll try that !
yay :D it went away @hbdgaf thanks =) now both multiple workspaces and vlc with seek bar un-screwed :D

@NathanOsman did you go back to a single screen afterwards? that could be it. some saved state from before the switch that makes screen geometry math go all wonky... where it divides some artifact to get the offset for the left padding. seems like a xinerama interaction to me though.
@user3197452 and this is why there is awesome floating around for no reason

@NathanOsman You should make the OpenID page actually show your URL

@Whaaaaaat It's planned.
And it will let you change it.
I can assign you an OpenID in the mean time if you want.

@hbdgaf haha ... this thing frustrated me for like 2 weeks :(

6:18 PM
if nothing is frustrating you, you're doing it wrong

true that !

@NathanOsman Please. I want to start the Shapado Cleanup Project.

@NathanOsman "back in the Trusty days" :O what do u use now ?

sure. thanks

6:19 PM
One sec.
@Whaaaaaat Alright, it's active.
You should be able to sign in using that now.
@user3197452 Utopic.

U switched that fast ? I heard it got released very recently !
ah by the 7* message 24 hrs ago ;)

wow. shapado doesn't even let me login. fail

@user3197452 No, I've been using it almost for a week now.
@Whaaaaaat For testing purposes, you could add it to your Stack Exchange account as a spare login.

@NathanOsman It works. Shapado is the problem. (HTTP-500)

@Whaaaaaat :P

Your OpenID Website Is Very Unfriendly.
it added fine, though.
+1 for Quick Media Solutions

now, if only you give hackintosh tips...
let's see if i can put yosemite on my machine :D
so, is there really no way to get compiz to play nice with VirtualBox seamless mode?

6:46 PM
@hbdgaf He has a dupe hammer in the regex tag ;)

Limited hammer.

Still a hammer :)

His hammer:
Seth's Hammer:

more like that

7:00 PM
no, he can wield it without destroying the community.

that is what the pointy bits are for, rarely has the use the big part :)

@Whaaaaaat I definitely wanna try that when my PC is done..
I hope Yosemite has Maxwell support

You mean Haswell?

@Whaaaaaat No, I mean Maxwell :)

7:08 PM
Maxwell is an NVIDIA GPU architecture

nope.
i'm fortunate as my pc internals are pretty mac-like

Why'd you say nope?

mac does not like graphics.

@Whaaaaaat They don't :P
:P I have to go mow. Fuunnnn
At least I get to listen to the Linux Voice podcast!
Boyo. CPUs are not cheap... :P
Then again, nothing in a computer is cheap

7:48 PM
@RPiAwesomeness RAM is pretty cheap

It would take me hours to seed that much (I get 256 Kbps if I'm lucky).

@NathanOsman Your connection is too fast.
It would take me days to seed that much (I get 80Kbps if I'm lucky).

@RPiAwesomeness Oh my.

@NathanOsman Yeah :P
Well, .6 Mbps from Speedtest.net

@RPiAwesomeness That's terrible.
You have my sympathy.

@NathanOsman IKR! O.O
I have trouble watching 360p some times :P

I have trouble with 480p.
