Q: How to invoke an XML RPC method with Python when the method name is only known at runtime?

George EdisonI've got some Python code below that invokes an XML RPC method: from xmlrpclib import ServerProxy s = ServerProxy("http://localhost:8000") s.SomeMethod('parameter') However, what happens when the name of the method (SomeMethod) is only known at runtime? Is there any way to invoke a method whe...

XML RPC in Python. Bleh.

1 hour later…
1:29 AM
@GeorgeEdison i see it's at least sort of working though...right?

I finally got it working.

yaaaay George
if it's a one file script, you do know you can embed python in to C/C++ if you link against python.h(if you want to)

Oh no - the Python script needs to go in a special location.
(Or Nautilus won't see it as an extension.)

oh...okay. didn't know what the status was.

Q: Use of the macbook-air tag and the macbook-pro tag instead of the macbook tag

Emerson HsiehI think that we should use the macbook-air tag and the macbook-pro tag instead of the macbook tag if the question is Macbook-Air or Macbook-pro specific, since Macbooks are discontinued. I spent some time retagging questions that are from macbook to macbook-pro/macbook-air. But I decided to ask...

1:58 AM
@AskUbuntuMeta and you have at least one answer...

How to define multiline long_description in quickly's setup.py? http://askubuntu.com/questions/160215/how-to-define-multiline-long-description-in-quicklys-setup-py?atw=1 #applicationdevelopment

1 hour later…
3:32 AM
turning on some remix and belting out some code:

@aking1012 \o/
Hello all

hi @Amith

LOL, A Shadow fan made that remix
That song is not bad

3:56 AM
@AmithKK Do you have more than one computer?
If not, do you have VirtualBox installed?

Yeah
Virtualbox

Great - would you like to test NitroShare?
It runs on Ubuntu and Windows at the moment.

\o/
Does it run fine on backtrack?

I'm not sure - it might.
I've never tried it.
Which platforms do you need instructions for?

Oh, I know it works. It is basically a penetration software toolkit on top of ubuntu :P

3:58 AM
My PPA (with the latest build) is here: ppa:george-edison55/nitroshare
And the latest Windows build is here: files.quickmediasolutions.com/nitroshare_0.2_win32.exe

Could you make a ownCloud plugin for it too?
or a WebUI

That's certainly possible - the app exposes many methods with XML RPC.

And yeah
do you have a portable version?

No, but I could make the Windows version portable with the addition of a couple lines of code.
Why would you need a portable version, though?

Ok, now I have a friend connected to the local network
I want to transfer a large quantity of files to him
but without installing new software
:P

4:11 AM
people flagging in chat need to shut up...most of the time it's just someone getting rubbed the wrong way

@AmithKK Ah. Is this friend running Windows?

@GeorgeEdison This is an example scenario, lets imagine he does

In that case, I could package a ZIP file with the program in it.

That would be great :)

The program does write to the registry... so I could either fix that or the user could ignore it.

4:12 AM
Sorry I can't test it now
I'm trying to get a working Pidgin/Empathy-Arduino Bridge

No problem.

@GeorgeEdison Where does notify osd pipe its output?

It uses libnotify to display notifications.

So, Is there a hackish way to get all the notifications piped to a serial output?

I have no idea.
Ubuntu's on-screen notifications does it somehow I think.
But I really have no idea.

4:20 AM
raspberry pi needs to get thier supply chain under control before anyone considers them a contender

i would only entertain it as a sustainable platform AFTER they get supply chain on lock
just doesn't make sense to build for something you can't buy

Right.

for example, i can buy beagleboards all day...but they cost twice as much. i'ld rather build for cherry pi, but i can't justify it
i might just be complaining so i'm shutting up now

4:47 AM
hello :))

My LCD's are not responding
@msPeachy Hey

LCD's???
how?

Not that kind of LCD's

oh are there other kinds? :P
just kidding

I'm talking about the 16*2 character LCD's

4:54 AM
no idea what it is

i see, what's it for?

Displaying info, usually by microcontrollers

where is it attached? what gadget or device? are you developing something?

In this case, an arduino

4:59 AM
arduino? will have to google it :P

yeah
:P

5:11 AM
I accidentally ripped a bunch of CDs to flac format.
Thankfully flac is lossless, so I can convert them to MP3s easily.

5:24 AM
Uh-oh 2.5 GB of free space remain.
Gulp.

izx
I once drove those things in assembly (16x2 LCDs), so I doubt I can help with whatever high-level language you kids use these days :P

@izx. nudge you to the delete queue.

izx
@AmithKK: sparkfun.com/datasheets/LCD/HD44780.pdf is all you should need

@izx Real programmers write raw machine code using a hex editor :P
...or better yet, punch cards.

Haha punching machines xD

izx
5:28 AM
@jokerdino Queue is emptied, thanks.

Great work. Thanks.

izx
@GeorgeEdison Hex editor? You big softie. They twiddle the transistors one volt at a time. :P

Rubs his feet to create a static charge to induce an electric current in a small coil.

@izx I have the code and the wiring done
it's just that the LCD is broken

@RolandTaylor, @jrg, @aking1012, @mateo_salta: I would like to credit you with helping test NitroShare. Please reply to this ping indicating whether I can include your name in the "special thanks" tab of the about box. If so, please let me know what name I should use.

izx
5:42 AM
Marvels at George Edison transcending the law of physics, by using _static_ charges to create magnetism which induces... :p

heya @ChanHoSuh

izx
I blame Nitroshare for these superhuman abilities ^^

I wondered when someone would call me up on the fake physics :)

izx
It appears the legit students in our midst are too distracted with frivolous pursuits @AmithKK @jokerdino :P

:P

5:44 AM
@izx heh I am pretty much heart broken after a mediocre math paper.

@jokerdino and physics :P
Get a load of this

Physics was better. Maths was pathetic.

izx
o.O Deepest sympathies. Math is so much more fun in theory ;)

Our chemisty teacher wont give marks if you write barely soluble in water but will give you marks of you write almost insoluble in water.
Whaaat

hey there @jokerdino

5:46 AM
@jokerdino, @StefanoPalazzo: I would like to credit you for your NitroShare translation in the "special thanks" tab of the about dialog. Please reply to this ping indicating whether you would like your name included and if so, how you would like your name listed.

@izx Physics is so much more fun when your using antpower to throw boulders at random stuff
@GeorgeEdison I can translate?

You sure can.

linkie please

@izx Math was fun. Until two years ago.

5:47 AM
@AmithKK You are doing it wrong.
@ChanHoSuh what's up?

@jokerdino, what happened 2 years ago?

izx
@jokerdino A lot of kids think math is fun until you get to calculus, basic statistics, geometry ;)

@GeorgeEdison ooh. I totally forgot I contributed to nitroshare. I sure would love to have my name listed. :))
@ChanHoSuh @izx calculus was giving me initial troubles. And then stats floored me.

@jokerdino What name should I use?

@jokerdino, that's surprising to hear.

5:49 AM
@GeorgeEdison the launchpad name?

izx
Stats per se is easy, it's the probability that gets ya ;)

@jokerdino K.

@ChanHoSuh :/

@izx Usually. :)

@izx probably..

5:51 AM
I have a feeling jokerdino's courses were a little more hardcore than we are familiar with, however.

Q: Shouldn't I be able to offer a bounty of 100 on this question?

Dave M GI have this one issue which has been driving me crazy for ages. However, with help from Ask Ubuntu, I feel it's closing in on a solution. I've discovered a workaround, and maybe that can be exploited to find an answer. Thus I was hoping maybe I could push to the finish line by offering a bounty. ...

izx
@ChanHoSuh Probably. I'd heard IB/AP are similar, which doesn't sound too bad...

It depends how you look at it.

@ChanHoSuh well, if i have only math, i am pretty sure i would have coped. the zillion other things are enough to keep me occupied most of the time.

Many schools offer AP calc but their students get As without even getting a 3 on the easier AP calc exam.

5:53 AM
@izx A level and IB are pretty much similar.

izx
AP != A-level <--- which I agree are harder than AP

Your school sounds like this, but I really dislike how the more rigorous a school is (at least in the US), the more it means you cram in busy work, rather than spending time trying to develop understanding deeply

izx
That's what advanced college courses and grad school are intended for (somewhat unfortunately)

@izx A-levels are harder than AP?.. slumps

So, for example, a school looks good if it pushes students to take more and more math, e.g. linear algebra, etc., instead of developing a strong foundation in basics. Then their students have problems in university.

5:56 AM
heh, it is not the school. it is the course itself.

@izx that's a matter of degree though. I've very familiar with several universities in different tiers and the freshman courses at the more elite places are just more substantive mathematically than the "advanced" courses at the lower tier places.

izx
@jokerdino Hey, this is decade-old IIRC, so take it with a grain of salt. I found AP/old SAT-IIs easy-peasy...

@izx I wonder..

izx
@ChanHoSuh Certainly. However, elite != private, though YMMV.

@izx never said it was :)

izx
5:59 AM
Well, elite conjures up visions of Ivies, not first-tier state schools :)

@GeorgeEdison hey
I'd be honoured to be included in the list of people who threw tomatoes at NitroShare screaming "Why are we screaming?".

izx
@jokerdino Wonder what? I should add that that was after NCERT-style 11th/12th, so you know where I was coming from...

I am just wondering..

@RolandTaylor Excellent. I'll add your name.

izx
@jokerdino wonderful :p

6:01 AM
:p

izx
Is IB comprehensive, or you get to pick and choose?

@jokerdino, ironically you will probably learn later on, that if you actually studied algebra as rigorously as calculus is typically presented, it is actually much harder than calculus.

izx
@ChanHoSuh +1

@izx i picked PCM and Business. And then English and Mother Tongue.

izx
6:03 AM
At least you don't have to deal with the plague that is Biology (IMHO)
naughty naughty

@izx hmm the last time I did bio was almost 4 years ago.

You know, that's the one thing that bothers me about my education. I never learned enough bio, and in high school, it was taught very badly.
We had to skip evolution.

izx
Good for you, you stopped at the Animal. Vegetable. Mineral. level ;)

well, my bio is not too bad.

Worse than that. We went as far as Lamarck. But we never learned it was wrong.

6:05 AM
@ChanHoSuh i hope it doesn't happen anytime soon.

"You've earned the "Precognitive" badge. See your profile."

izx
@AmithKK That's bizarre.

Were you... surprised, amith?

That was for the RPi.SE site

wait, since when is lynx is not in the repo's?

6:11 AM
:P

did it get superceded by links?

no. someone is claiming it is not in the repos

Weird
who's saying that?

tibbya or other alternate spelling.
Lynx is not present in Repository . And no need to Reinstall, just installing light Desktop like Xubuntu /Xfce from command line will do. — tijybba 11 hours ago

Hmm

I have a CASIO PV-S660. Will the serial port work on linux?

I have a TI Nspire.
@izx I have no idea. It just looks like a weird name to me.

6:25 AM
Pocket Viewer (Casio PV) was a model range of personal digital assistants (PDAs) developed by Casio. Description Pocket Viewer was a model range of PDAs from Casio. Early models used Intel x86 based processors (manufactured by NEC). Later models used Hitachi processors from the SuperH family. Both models ran Casio's proprietary OS 'CASIO PVOS'. The functionality of the pocket viewers extended beyond the digital diary segment and targeted consumers who needed more compute power in their personal organizers. The pocket viewers competed directly with the then market leader in the segment th...

@AnwarShah I can't tell. Let me relook.

> Casio did not provide any official linux support. Casio had contracted a 3rd party vendor for PC communication, and hence could not disclose any internal communication protocols. Apart from Casio PC sync and Enterprise Harmony, shareware Xlink/Win[3] also provides communication with windows. An open-source GPL Linux application by the name PVlink is available with limited guarantees.

@AnwarShah yep. looks similar.

@jokerdino flag for dupe?

not sure

6:27 AM
Thanks, not flagging.

done.

need to go. bye

bye

@GeorgeEdison - you're welcome to thank me as you see fit with the nitroshare thoughts i posed to you...or not. you're welcome to use my given name, the general public handle, or both (Andrew King, aking1012). sorry for the delayed response

izx
@jokerdino TI-89 FTW, always and forever :P

6:33 AM
@izx i had that one last year.

I made a zork style game on my TI-89

then i chucked it and bought a new one.

Which is the file for my serial port?

what?

Serial poet? Hilarious.

Q: Linux Mint: Orca Screen reader won't read anything, but it talks when it opens

IsaacOrca screen reader isn't reading anything on the screen. I've been trying all the commands like insert + + and insert+/. How does this work? None of the documentation seems to indicate how to use this. I'm using Linuxmint 13 Mate, which is like Gnome 2 on Ubuntu 12.04.

@TheInterrupter don't. that's my answer...just don't
@izx i'm willing to vote to close on grounds that it's asanine given the recent comment

izx
@aking1012 Done, NARQ-goats appreciated

@izx done. also that recently tweeted question...the complete answer despite my proclivities on the matter is just a compilation of "How do I shrink my windows partition", "How do I migrate wubi to a real partition", and "How do I delete windows and expand my partition". I don't like questions that are simple compilations of previous questions.

7:45 AM
what the heck? i can't upgrade to 12.10
update-manager keeps crashing

@aking1012 Close-goated.
@jokerdino Why would you update a live/production 12.04 to 12.10?

It's possible. @jokerdino tends to have lots of corner case issues b/c of his uni firewall/proxy

oh dear lord :/
@izx looks like the GFW.
@aking1012 yes. that.

Good Day all

hmm I used to be able to upgrade releases.

@Mitch Top of the morning to you too

7:57 AM
How is everybody doing?

I am a little annoyed atm.
it is not my firewall at least.
@izx that was funny.

izx
It was worth a shot :P

@jokerdino To be fair, it covers at least a quarter of the issues you've ever brought up in chat

@aking1012 heh. Actually I think it is more than just a quarter :P
not to forget the other issues that created. like conflicts between us last time. :P

I came across this question, should I close as well? askubuntu.com/questions/160289/…

hence at least...that translates to >= in math terms.... heheheheh

@RolandTaylor way too late for you to be awake..
