Q: Where does package make-doc end up after installation?

ScooterI am on Mint 12 KDE. I used Software Manager to install make-doc - "Documentation for the gnu version of the "make" utility". How do I access what was downloaded?

Q: What should I do when an answer to my question is no longer required?

ubnewbie2Having moved to new hardware, a problem I was having has gone away. What should I do with the question I raised? Delete it?

6:19 AM
Hi all.

hi

just answered the above question
feedback is welcome

6:30 AM
Can anyone tell me, what is the reason here. meta.askubuntu.com/a/3679/61218

7:07 AM
@Takkat congratulations !
I also try to upvote

Yeah upvoting good competing answers is not a bad thing. However I downvote really evil stuff only anyway.

116 downvotes , 782 upvotes

O.O do we have that many evil posts? /jk we do

many of them are on questions
bad, vague question deserves downvotes , IMO

<-- tends to just ignore those - not very helpful, I know.
Sometimes I comment to give the OP a chance to improve but always forget to downvote if they don't :/

7:13 AM
<-- he learns it from @jokerdino :-) who can brute fully downvotes questions
and also wants to give more votes on questions to get a badge

:) dino (!) is a good teacher indeed

look at his DV numbers, one - fouth of his votes askubuntu.com/users/25798/jokerdino are DV

Yeah, that's professional voting. :)
Because I always feel bad on getting a downvote I don't do that to others, but this may be the wrong approach.

He wants to put old, unanswered, abandoned questions to feed deletion machine
@Takkat I don't think so, it is a personal matter
also a kindness
Only 11 users with sportsmanship badge !

Leaving bad questions or answers not downvoted is not kind to people that put all their efforts in.
I know 11 is too few!

7:21 AM
Yes, I agree, you should downvote bad questions and answers. if they are really bad
but I also give a downvote to questions which seems to me ordering something

Ha - there the problem arises: what's the definition of really bad?
Downvoting for ordering is not fair, I go the upvote approach in these cases.

I mean harsh, demanding something like that is a right of him
In my opinion: the really bad answers are, which are far from a possible solution to the question

What's going on in here?
pang me?

@jokerdino yup. now i did. :P

we say you're a good teacher :)

7:28 AM
@Mahesh no you didn't

^^ that

@Takkat i am a learner. :-)

Teaching learners are the best ;P

I know a user with name "student"
haven't seen any with "teacher" name yet

I stick around in Ask Ubuntu because I can learn new things that way. Otherwise not that easy.

Need to know, the equivalent of Details window in Ubuntu for XUbuntu

hmm no idea

sorry no Xubuntu here at work, can't look it up

7:33 AM
I have found a question which ask a solution, found that solution for Ubuntu but now I need to give him Xubuntu solution

If I can answer that, I'll earn my fourth revival badge!
Thanks Takkat.
But the settings i am looking for isn't there

How can I unload a library without logging out ?
l is doing the same things as ls !!
whoever added this feature, is a very good guy
I am going to ask this question, "Is there any alternative to gconf-editor/dconf-editor for xubuntu?"

7:54 AM
@AnwarShah l is an alias.

I searched but found no question, If anyone knows an already existing question, please give me the link
before me asking another dupe

try typing alias l in terminal to see yourself.

right. there are couple of alias for different ls parameters

and alternative.. no idea.. why not use the same..

the same do not work
yes, it must be alias

7:55 AM
O.o..

but I only pointing to the nice thing, doing l for ls

gconf / dconf are for gnome.

then, alternatives wont exist
xubuntu uses xfce, iirc

yep

and not gnome.

7:57 AM
you can't use unity configuration tools to tweak openbox and likewise.

But, xfce needs settings change

if dconf and gconf backends are not used, editors do nothing.. so dont work

and I want to change settings

just ask how to change the settings for whatever you want.
the current question you want to ask was a perfect example of X-Y problem.

^ yep that.

7:59 AM
so, I should ask, "How to disable autorun of USB drive in xubuntu?"

yes

is that a dupe already?

maybe?

I cant because I can't test here

@Takkat umm... dont tempt me to try it. i want to stick tomy buggy unity.. :|

I also have Unity at home - like it someway

Takkat, that still mounts drives

There are separate tick boxes for mounting, and for autorun... Needs testing

8:12 AM
Is this an example of autorun?
When you insert a USB.

Hmm autorun/autoopen/askwhattodo - any of those. They may treat Ubuntu CD seperate but no idea where (its the same in Ubuntu afaik)

Yes, I figured out to disable that in Ubuntu
But need a way to disable that in xubuntu too.

Q: Simple maths problem made hard, Futurama style

Q: What is 48÷2(9+3)?

acidzombie24There is a huge debate on the internet on 48÷2(9+3). I figured if i wanted to know the answer this is the best place to ask. bob
Does that mean there's no solution for me?

izx

@bob None that can be solved without remote desktop or in-person tech support.

bob
11:35 AM
@izx do you mean I have to pay to get an answer to such a simple question ? I'm probably not the first person who has encountered problems with apt-get...
@izx can you clarify what you meant by "None that can be solved without remote desktop or in-person tech support." please ? I don't understand what you're trying to say. Are you saying it's a bug and requires professional support from ubuntu developers?

izx
@bob It appears you can't adapt simple directions in similar scenarios to yours. Additionally, you appear to not accept ANY answers to your questions. That means you either don't care about being grateful to the answerers and the community OR your problems are SO localized that AU answers do not help. In the latter case, then, you need support from someone who can directly manipulate your computer.

bob
@izx it appears you care a lot for people to accept answers. Do you earn money from it ? I could accept any random answer if that's what you want, I don't care about points or whatever, I'm just here to get help from what appears to be the main support channel.

izx
@bob Yes, I do -- see the FAQ for why -- and no, no one gets any money. What pisses me off are serial questioners with zero percent accept rates for no good reason. Case in point:
2
A: Step by step copy paste tutorial for configuring VNC/RDP without a reboot

izx
@BrunoPereira :)

bob
izx: so now that I have 100% accept rate, can you help me with my apt-get question?
Apparently this kind of warning comes from duplicates in sources.list. But I don't see any duplicates there, and cat /etc/apt/sources.list | uniq -d doesn't produce any output.

izx
@bob That wasn't the point; note that I have no answers to any of your questions. As for the apt-get question, edit it with HOW you followed the instructions in the duplicate link, WHAT happened, and justify WHY it isn't a duplicate; then flag the question to have the mods/users consider re-opening it.

bob
I'm not that much of an advanced stackexchange user, I don't know how long this reopening process would take, and I don't mind. I'll just try somewhere else. That's why I came in this room actually.
maybe someone knows the answer and can help me.

izx
11:57 AM
@bob: screenshot this please (on your system) -- the Updates tab

@bob Bob, re-opening a question takes no time, you just have to add more details on how the reported solution did not work for you and where you are stuck. From what I'm guessing is that you are not supplying enough details and in the current for your question covers the same ground as another one already existing.

izx
^^^ that, @bob

bob
@izx sorry, I'm not used to using this graphical tool. Where can I access it from, with 12.04 ? I actually tried the second solution provided in the answer given.

izx
pastebin /etc/apt/sources.list then...

bob
@BrunoPereira it's ok I'm not here to argue with moderators about whether or not it needs to be opened or closed or whatever, I don't really care about the specifics of this site, I just want help.
@izx ok give me a second.

izx
12:02 PM
To be honest, UbuntuForums may be a better fit for your questions (based on your profile), because UF's format is much better-suited to somewhat open-ended/less-detailed stuff (i.e. more participant interaction than AU)

bob
@izx thanks for trying to help. Here is what you requested: pastebin.com/qY0rZAnv

@bob I am sure you do

izx
@bob Line 8 and line 48 are duplicates. Get rid of one.

bob
one includes a /
@izx does it not matter ?
They are not really identical: ...com/ubuntu/ precise-security main restricted vs ...com/ubuntu precise-security main restricted

izx
I present:
deb security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security main restricted
deb security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security main restricted

bob
12:12 PM
that's why they were not picked up by uniq -d.

izx
@bob If you feel apt-get should consider trailing slashes uniquely and not warn about duplicates, I suggest you file a bug with the good people at debian.org

1
A: Add custom command in the open with dialog?

izxAs aneeshep's answer explains, the key is creating an appropriate .desktop "launcher". But there's a simpler way than doing it by hand; in many cases, you may not even need to edit the .desktop file. Solution: Use Ubuntu Tweak Ubuntu Tweak is a utility, which among other things, allows you to ...

give this man some rep! he wants it!

bob
it's stupid though, why don't they all use the same syntax, if there are two syntaxes, warnings appear.
@izx anyway, thanks a lot

izx
@bob Well, the solution was exactly what the duplicate suggests, which is what I did -- open the file in an editor and carefully look through for duplicates. You're welcome, good luck.
@BrunoPereira lol...I waited to see if any of the previous answerers picked up on the hints... maybe we need a canonical Q on "How do I use shutter?" ;)

bob
@izx yeah but I had tried looking at the file, and then using that with uniq -d, but didn't work. Thanks for spotting the duplicate.

12:15 PM
@bob it was a dupe after all or do you want us to open your question? ;)
@izx Think we have one ;P

bob
no it was indeed a duplicate line, but I don't understand why they would add such lines that are so identical and then warn me about it. sounds like a bug to me.
I mean, it was certainly not me who added this duplicate line into sources.list, it was added my some process or something.

@bob Go for it! Launchpad.net > create account (if none) > report bug if that is what you think is the right path
@LordofTime You know you're bored when you fix a stared chat post a day after it was posted

bob
there are still duplicates. They're hard to find. What command would help me to spot them ? I tried cat /etc/apt/sources.list | sed'/ubuntu '/ubuntu/ 'g | uniq -d but it gives ">" instead of an output.

izx
@BrunoPereira, thanks for the comments; I still need to edit the answer to include that, what to do with Ubuntu Tweak if the app/command is CLI (e.g. vim, nano, etc.), and maybe on the use of Assogiate to create your own MIME types/extensions
Will get to that tomorrow :)

@izx Assogiate is still needed in 12.04 (does it work???)

izx
12:26 PM
@BrunoPereira Is there another GUI alternative to create/register/edit MIME types in 12.04?
@bob The simplest is to regenerate your sources.list from repogen.simplylinux.ch

I don't even know.

12:32 PM
@ObsessiveFOSS Contact House MD

Really? Let's not be absurd.
It was actually that I skewered my thumb with a bad BIOS chip I was trying to pry out to put a new one in...

izx
What that has to do with SQL I will never know...
Hi Peachums! :p

hi iz

izx
Good job with all the recent edits!

@izx Thank you.. I do that when I'm bored.

12:37 PM
@izx The puncture wounds are not related to the SQL.

izx
@ObsessiveFOSS Yes, I meant what replacing BIOS chips has to do with "getting SQL done"...

@izx One needs a BIOS chip for a computer to operate and I do not write SQL in a notebook.

@ObsessiveFOSS why not? :P

i really wanna get apt-fast working. I installed it but cant do anything with it cause I keep getting the error "apt-fast allready running verify and remove .lock file"
but there is no .lock file in /tmp
and apt-fast is not running

@msPeachy My OCD does not permit me to make my code look like fowl scratches.

izx
12:48 PM
Perhaps try writing it on a notebook, after 30 hours of failing to get your BIOS working?

i figured it out, i made a symbolic link of apt-fast as apt-get so that everytime I used apt-get it would just call apt-fast but apt-fast is configured to call apt-get so ... that doesnt work
but I heard that somehow I could do this... somehow make apt-get an alias that links to apt-fast
but Im not sure what that means
does that mean , make it an alias in some bash shell , or making a symbolic link somewhere?

izx
@JoshuaRobison: the considerate thing to do, IMO, would be to ask a question on AU instead of this stream-of-consciousness stuff in chat...

@izx you're right. I usually post there second though for good sport
