@aking1012 Ah, but not any more
Welcome @Zypher
@aking1012 Do you have 2 mice by any chance?
I think you could use X's multiple cursor feature

@AmithKK I have two. It would be tedious, but I could try it.
@Zypher o/

@aking1012 Plug In your other mouse please
and run xinput list

i have to find it, it's going to be a couple minutes

Oh, No problem :)

Okay...found it. Also found my hdmi to dvi adapter btw
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ Logitech USB Optical Mouse id=8 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ PIXART USB OPTICAL MOUSE id=10 [slave pointer (2)]

4:11 PM
Ok. which is the new one?
The PIXART?

PIXART USB OPTICAL MOUSE id=10 [slave pointer (2)]

@aking1012 run xinput create-master Auxiliary

got it...and then?

run xinput list again

⎡ Auxiliary pointer                       	id=11	[master pointer  (12)]
⎜   ↳ Auxiliary XTEST pointer                 	id=13	[slave  pointer  (11)

4:14 PM
Great!
@aking1012 run xinput reattach 10 "Auxiliary pointer"

It responded as you would expect and I have two pointers

@aking1012 run xinput set-button-map 10 3 2 1

i just crashed gnome-terminal...just a sec
okay...done

jrg
@LordofTime Relax. ;P

Ok, now a utility to distinguish the pointers
@aking1012 run git clone git://git.ao2.it/xicursorset.git

4:20 PM
okay it compiled fine

@aking1012 Wait
You finished running make?

yes, it builds as you would expect (i already have a bunch of -dev libs installed)
I think we may have gotten Aux backwards though. Paste/window selection and the like only works from the second(new) mouse

@aking1012 No, The other cursor is running on Left hand mode
so the switches are switched

that's not what i meant. if i use my primary cursor to select the and paste(Right hand one) paste and context based window selection no longer works...but i'm pushing through it. keep going

Ok now, try multitouch

4:29 PM
Okay, both pointers work, but the meat of the question is a multi-touch extension for the browser or a browser that supports multi-touch
...preferably native...

Q: How do I set fish as the default shell?

XodarapIs there a way to set fish as the default shell in ubuntu netbook remix? I put in my .bashrc to run fish, which works fine, but ubuntu recognizes it as fish running inside bash, which means that when I try to close the shell it warns me that a task is still running. It doesn't pop up as a new ap...

@aking1012 Did you try rekonq

I first read the title as "how much is the fish?" .. :D

@AmithKK I haven't.

@aking1012 Well.. I guess you can try
It probably will pull out some kubuntu dependencies

4:33 PM
google-ing about on it, it seems it may be supported in the future just not yet
giving it a shot though

Bounty offered: Can I remove the Skype panel icon? http://askubuntu.com/questions/7479/can-i-remove-the-skype-panel-icon?atw=1 #panel

@AmithKK yeah no dice on pinch zoom, just got 2 cursors

Looks like there are very very few multitouch browsers
Or, Try the emulator
BBL
Windows Time

Okay. Pinch-zoom doesn't work, but you're about half way there

Good Night

hi all!
is there something like networking.SE?

hi @htorque

jrg
@htorque networking as in Ethernet cables, switches and routers?

yay

jrg
@aking1012 You're the eclipse guy, is this a dupe? askubuntu.com/questions/144549/…
@htorque serverfault might be a good guess

5:03 PM
@jrg yes, there's a canonical how do i install eclipse question

do they like linux guys?
is it an eclipse or java issue with sticky/hovering dropdown menus?

@jrg that's not the canonical question

(not disappearing, on top of the desktop)

Q: How to install Eclipse

Gaurav ButolaI want to install Eclipse 3.6.1 (latest) but software centre contains old version. Is there a PPA or some other way to install latest Eclipse? Please describe the steps for full installation.

jrg
@htorque they're mostly IT infrastructure people over there, *nix servers are predominant (as are Windows desktops).
@aking1012 thanks
ok, one down. another bajillion tabs to go

5:05 PM
well, i'll give it a go. thanks @jrg!

@jrg np

jrg
The Matrix has good credits music.

@jrg Has good music in general

jrg
@aking1012 Very true.

I'm wondering when games are going to stop choosing your soundtrack for you and just let you select an mp3/wmv/whatever-per-platform playlist

jrg
5:10 PM
Already has that on iOS.

Would also reduce development costs

jrg
Gameloft has that for the majority of their games.

Good idea

GTA
get in a car, listen to your music

jrg
Whoa... Jono Bacon reshared that picture of the Microcenter ad. My life is nearing completion. :O
(I know, I'm very ambitious.)

5:15 PM
<-- is eagerly awaiting the first real web-gl game development platform

jrg
@aking1012 That'll be the day...

It would be epic

5:27 PM
@aking1012 Sounds good to me.
Hey - when did Chrome get autocomplete in the JS console?

@GeorgeEdison a few releases ago

I'm afraid that just goes to show how much I use Chrome anymore :P
Komodo Edit sometimes amazes me: it's warning me, as I type, that the function I'm writing doesn't always return a value.

5:57 PM
Linux has a pretty good showing there.

@ak
@aking1012, while that should be an option, the soundtrack for many games is carefully chosen to reflect what is happening at that moment in the game in order to better connect the player to what is happening, possibly triggering an emotional response
I don't think I would have had the same response to many of the scenes in the mass effect series had I been listening to the bare naked ladies instead

no way, immersion is dead. way too expensive.

With the amount that is spent making some of these games, I don't think "too expensive" is in their vocabulary

yawn
i hate having to diagram stuff with Vizio
its a pain in the [CENSORED]
and not just because its Windows software

izx
6:47 PM
@LordofTime TikZ + TeX FTW!

@izx on Windows?
that's why its a pain - i have to use Vizio for sharepoint workflows

izx
@LordofTime On any platform, yes, but my experience is limited to general flowcharts and EE/CS diagrams - I imagine with sharepoint you have no choice but use vizio

or custom code, or InfoPath (Which is even more evil)

7:16 PM
Hello all
Can I host Wbui on my site for download?

i'd not
i mean, you can, but make a note its an unofficial mirror when yuo offer it
so it may be out of date

K
I downloaded 12.10 today, and installed it inside a VM, but is says 12.04. What gives?

12.10 is weirdish
its only in alpha 1 anyways
call it a fluke or a bug :P

It might be, but it runs very good

doesn't matter, as long as the /etc/apt/sources.list stuff refers to quantal you're fine

7:20 PM
More that I can say for 6,7, ???
it does

well let me put it this way:
Alpha 1 only came out a few days ago
they havent really added anything new
but they will
so when they add new things, well...

Oh, I very sure of that
Would it be OK if sometimes a person asks a question, but their English isn`t all that great, to maybe answer them in their own language?
Of course if you know their language.

if and only if you include the english translation
failure to comply is bad

jrg
Anyone used a tiling window manager before?

No, I bathe regularly.

7:27 PM
nope
can't say i have

sorry, I had to

@JorgeCastro lol

@JorgeCastro Quick question... would you happen to have a tracking number for the package?

@Jorge bdmurray answered the question i had about bugcontrol applications :)

@GeorgeEdison I looked, but couldn't find it

jrg
7:27 PM
@JorgeCastro LOL

@GeorgeEdison I'll head over to the fedex store tomorrow
it should be there by now

jrg
Dangit. I guess I'll need to stumble through this project on my own. Compiz is too resource heavy, and i need something with some sort of window snapping. :(

@jrg I've used Ratpoison from time to time

Wow... Python stack traces are hard to read.
Things get complicated when the call stack has about 100 entries.

@George paste it here, i'll see if i cant help :)

7:33 PM
Actually I just figured it out.

lolol indeed

I'm just saying... I was looking for the error in the wrong file.

hehe, yeah that can be hard to read :)

jrg
@GeorgeEdison ruby is similar.
@MarcoCeppi like it?

Next question: why is Django escaping HTML that I've marked as safe???
@register.filter(name='markdown', is_safe=True)
Instead, the HTML is getting escaped to the page.

7:42 PM
@jrg Yes, it's based on GNU Screen bindings

@jrg 'awesome' is highly regarded, look there first
it's what googlers are into

@Marco @jrg should 'bugs' be a synonym of 'bug' ?
in tags

@LordofTime and should die in a pit

@MarcoCeppi i agree with you :P
go purge them and have fun doing it

jrg
@JorgeCastro Ok. Thanks!

7:44 PM
while you're at it, grep them for any links to LP bugs and give me the list of what LP bugs for ubuntu are linked to those posts :p

@tgm4883 valid point. i more meant for less scripted games

hey @jrg did your internet die to irc or something
because @jokerdino's died too
so...

jrg
irccloud did die, yes

@EliahKagan it has been filed.

@Mitch what was filed where?

A bug report about Wubi

link please
is on bug squasher duties

Browsing through askubuntu.com yesterday, I found out the users can`t download Wubi. So I went to the site and tried downloading it myself, and it was going in a loop. I file a bug report via E-mail. Email content were as follows: Browsing through askubuntu.com unanswered questions, I found this question: Windows installer for Ubuntu Desktop when I click on " start download " in "http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer " it does`nt work and it guides me for installing ubuntu desktop in this page : http://www.ubuntu.com/download what should I do ? thanks I started to see what the problem is, and found out the site is in a loop, and it will not allow the download of the windows installer. Please can you have a look? Thanks Mitch I got a replay saying that information is missing so I replied back with the information needed. I have not received any response back yet, and I can`t see it in my account. Can you please help. Thanks
Ubuntu
Undecided / New

you know they already know right?

I never doubted that they did not, but just to be on the safe side

@Mitch its been around for 3 days so...

jrg
@GeorgeEdison so you don't think i'm being overzealous?

@jrg Not really.
If anyone can do it, you can.

@jrg best of luck

jrg
8:05 PM
Have you seen how many questions are in those tags combined?
it's like, 1K+. :P

about a bazillion :P

jrg
yeah, exactly. And that's not counting the dupes. It's entirely likely I'll end up spending most of june doing those tags, most of july/august closing dupes, and then most of september sleeping. ;P

looks like your summer is planned out.
i'm on bugsquasher duties now so... :P

jrg
> I will be programming my merry heart out when suddenly nothing I type makes sense.
Welcome to the zen.

That's usually right after I walk away for 5 minutes or so and come back to give recent progress a WAT

Q: Summer cleanup, feedback wanted, etc

jrgBasically, what I'd like to do is get community 'permission' to do the following over the next few weeks (for whats left of June, and then thereafter whenever I have time): Completely destroy and utterly eradicate the following tags: error crash bug Try and clean up our duplicates, primarily...

jrg
@AskUbuntuMeta You're late to the party, as usual.

hehe

Thought you might get a kick out of this
This is my IDE. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

My IDE is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.

My IDE, without me, is useless. Without my IDE, I am useless.
I must use my IDE true. I must implement more logically than my enemy who is trying to generate bugs.
I must meet deadlines before he generates bugs. I will...

My IDE and myself know that what counts in this war is not the lines of code, the number of iterations, or the refactoring we do.

jrg
@aking1012 LOL

I'm glad someone got the reference...

8:30 PM
A few minutes ago we rolled out support for Markdown syntax in comments. Please let us know if you encounter any problems using it.

@GeorgeEdison Thanks

8:49 PM
@jrg ... that "linuxmint" closure ... FYI you can get that same error if the OP has installed the MATE repo ontop of ubuntu.

jrg
really? Guess i should try out more weird software.

@fossfreedom Good to know

:) if you dont mind - can I dupe it against the correct report?

jrg
that and he's now claiming he's not using mint.
@fossfreedom go right ahead

jrg
8:58 PM
Wow. Impressive.

There's a cryptography stack site? Who knew...no wait, I was the only one that didn't know

@MarcoCeppi Wow.
I never thought that day would come.

@GeorgeEdison it's been like that since release, with no sign of slowing down

That's excellent.

given my recent mint misfire, i'm not voting this one...it feels like hedging though: askubuntu.com/questions/147487/…

9:07 PM
... its an obvious OT - closed.

I thought so, I just didn't want to get in to a two mis-votes in 20 minutes about OT thing if "but I'm using Ubuntu to make a respin of X" and get caught in an awkward place

jrg
Our site is like a jungle. Stay on the path and you're fine, get off the road and you're in trouble. :(

... thats linux for you ... you get the power ... but also the bullets to shoot yourself not only in the feet but in the head as well...! :)

jrg
Yeah, that's why I like Ubuntu. It puts the bullets up on the top shelf. Apparently, we need to put it in a lockbox, and then leave the key on the top shelf. :P

Kind of like: "C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot; C++ makes it harder, but when you do, it blows away your whole leg." -- Bjarne Stroustrup

but for Ubuntu I suppose

9:27 PM
yikes ... launchpad is slowing down today ... I've built a number of packages today. The last two though ... one is due to build in 16 hours time ... and the other in 3 days!!

the push for more developers for ubuntu apps and the app-store must be succeeding (or it has to do with a bunch of version bumps for Q)

jrg
@aking1012 i think it's mostly Q related

I was being optimistic
Also, I just found out on the Sencha forums that they have in private beta a cross platform Ext4JS binary packager

jrg
by all means, be optimistic!

damn ... a few hours was not unreasonable ... but 3 days!

jrg
@aking1012 AH-HA! Just what I'm looking for!
Thank you sir!

always happy to help

... just been spending a few days understanding debian packaging ... dont think my head can take creating my own package repo as well !

the packaging is harder than repo-making...but i take your point

Q: game tag needs to be cleaned up

Jorge Castrogame needs to be merged into games. I've taken care of merging in ubuntu-games already.

9:43 PM
brief aside...i find this very interesting: wiul.org

hey everyone. I have a newbie question.
How do I move text to a new line when posting in the Q/A
without pressing enter twice that is.

<space><space><enter>

Ahhh, thanks! time to clean up some answers lol :)

I like using the whitespace to separate thoughts/steps though. It helps it not look like a wall of text with a spikey right edge

Oh certainly!

10:12 PM
The W3C doesn't waste time - they're already drafting the spec. for CSS4.

Q: Line breaks in markdown

ObsessiveFOSSI have been seeing new users who copy/paste code or information into posts not add extra newlines(or even type without extra newlines) and make posts hard to read, wasting the time of a moderator or editor. Can this behavior be changed to make single linebreaks act as lienbreaks? Or is by design?

Q: What does the term Unregistered mean on the user page?

AlvarOn some new users do I often see a grey text next to their name Unregistered. What does this mean? Does it mean that the user has removed his/her account? Because I've seen people log-in after that they've been marked Unregistered. Really what's the deal with this mark?

11:21 PM
I need some advice:
Stack2RSS moved to stack2rss.stackexchange.com over a year ago.
I've been sending 301 Moved Permanently status codes practically forever.
...and yet there are still many many users using the old URLs.
Now I've started returning 404 Not Found.
