o/ @la

@JorgeCastro Is it possible to get a tracking number?

@GeorgeEdison I'ld be happy to follow it if I was sure it was going to present relevant to my interests type data...what types of things are intended to be posted there?

@aking1012 Site status updates and new features.
Basically only stuff related to the site itself.

@GeorgeEdison Okay. So you're making a JS specific editor and that is what the site is about? or each of your software projects like you have in that left tab there?

No, JS Studio is just one of the many software applications listed there.
There's also a mini-blog integrated into the site.

12:21 AM
Okay... it seemed prolific/featured. I'll follow it and if it turns out to be not something I'm interested in, just unfollow it. seems pretty simple

Excellent.

12:40 AM
@lazyPower - there's a recent blog article you might find interesting...I seem to think your focus area is web-apps and it's relevant

Oh?
do tell

well, it was a me blog article...but still. i think it's relevant

@lazyPower Hopefully you've heard my exciting news.

1:04 AM
Awesome @GeorgeEdison!!

Thanks!
If you register, you get the ability to vote for stuff, comment, and a free OpenID.

Neat...I saw that when you mentioned it so I started picking back through G+

I saw :)

1:40 AM
@aking1012 - I'm glad you see the awesomeness. Take a look at the NovaCut UI if you haven't already - Jason & co has implemented the UI in pure portable HTML5 / Webkit awesomeness.

1 hour later…
3:32 AM
@GeorgeEdison what, you're shocked that there are such sites online?

I'm shocked that there are so many people in the forum.
There are always weird people promoting weird things online.

yeah
I've read some interesting conspiracy stuff
Some people come across as rather detached from reality

3:57 AM
Same goes for those who deny the moon landings.

Is FF 13 released yet?

4:33 AM
I believe so.
My Firefox is downloading an update as I speak.
Oy! Firefox opens this 3x3 grid in each new tab.

LOL, it is a new feature.

1 hour later…

Hi all

6:11 AM
hi @Takkat

izx
6:55 AM
@Takkat - edited that SSD answer of yours to explain a little more in the first paragraph about why changes to the loop-mount ext3 are not directly reflected in the root.disk, feel free to fix it further if you need it :)

@izx great edit :)
Thank you.

2 hours later…

Hello all
I just downloaded what is described as Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) Daily Build, and installed it into VM, but it says that it is 12.04. What gives?

They haven't updated that part I think.

Q: How do i move my question to a different SE?

DetnuomnuI've asked a question and after a couple of days thinking on it (and seeing low viewing) I suspect I might get better/faster results by moving it to Unix SE. So how do I do this or request this?

Q: HTTPS: Certificate is not signed for askubuntu.com

PenthiIf I try to access https://askubuntu.com, the certificate is signed for *.stackexchange.com instead of askubuntu.com. Can this be fixed for a better HTTPS access?

@jokerdino Thanks :) it was my big fingers

it's alright.

@izx I`m waiting to hear from the user, about his Internet access. What do you suggest?

Bounty offered: Why is 12.04 removing the -server kernel flavour? http://askubuntu.com/questions/122493/why-is-12-04-removing-the-server-kernel-flavour?atw=1 #server

10:58 AM
As far as this question goes: askubuntu.com/questions/147176/…
Why the down-vote? The user has not responded about his Internet connection. Plus the error "Error: need a repository as argument" doesn`t say no Internet connectivity

because your answer is not suitable for the question.
the user has limited bandwidth.

The user just responded, saying that he has Internet connectivity, but its limited
But he has Internet connectivity

so what? he is trying to not waste bandwidth downloading packages when the packages are available to him in a DVD.

Hello all

@AmithKK LTNS

11:02 AM
wha?
Lateral Telescope Navigation System?

long time no see XD

That OK, but that doesn`t mean that my answer is totally wrong. Does it?

it is incorrect because it doesn't answer the question.

I modified to so it will work both ways per izx

@Mitch no, sudo apt-cdrom won't help
sudo apt-cdrom -d <DVD mount point>

can I modify the answer, and add that in it? Or would want to do it, since you spplied it

yeah go ahead.

izx
@Mitch: the downvote wasn't me; thanks @jokerdino for the proper syntax, I was on my phone and assumed Mitch would look it up and supply an appropriate command line.

for the record, I didn't downvote it either.

izx
The Q's language was so convoluted I didn't blame folks for misunderstanding what the OP was trying to say.

11:20 AM
@AmithKK got it. thanks.

@jokerdino I know. Thanks

Another is this one:

Q: How can I enable one-finger scrolling in Unity?

oZiRizI would like to activate to scroll with one finger inside the Unity environment(nautilus, Dash, Firefox). Because Unity claims to be touch screen friendly but scrolling with two fingers is annoying and doesn't work so well.

I fully expect someone to downvote my answer about scrollbars saying he meant auto-scrolling like Windows used to do or something, too tired to ask for clarification right now. I've learned over the last few days (thanks to chat+meta) not to get too riled up about downvotes and just move on :)

@izx i thought he was talking about the touch interface.
and @Mitch i doubt the user would understand what <DVD mount point> supposed to mean.

izx
@jokerdino isn't that just the overlay scrollbars?

i never tried a tablet or something, so I don't know what is the question or what would be a good answer.

11:27 AM
@izx There is a hot discussion going on on that: bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/942498
Whenever I touch my monitor it tilts over. The harder I try the more so.

izx
@Takkat thanks - unity doesnt support ip*-device style "flick" scrolling on touch screens?!

11:44 AM
Dunno - I have no touch devices.
<-- always yells at his kids: Don't touch that screen!
They are so ahead of their time...
(well, they'd say their dad is retarded)

Hahhaah
"Metal Sonic disliked this video."
@Takkat lolz

@jokerdino I just updated the answer. Can you see if its OK? Thanks for all you help

@Takkat Buy them a Genesis and a Sonic and Knuckles+Sonic 3 Cartridge and lock them in a room :P
@aking1012 Hey!
That can run Uberoid

@aking1012 it's 2.2 only... can you istall Ubuntu on it?

11:50 AM
Not a bad mod if you ask me
@Takkat Kinda sorta
I've failed in my attempts at a similar tablet
almost bricked it

@Takkat I'm not sure

@aking1012 --^
@aking1012 Do they use the WM8650?

according to the specs on amazon yes

Oh, its the same processor.
It works quite good
if you mod it

wait what? amazon has an android app-store now??

11:56 AM
they've had one for quite a while

This is not too expensive: odys.de/web/tablet-pc_neo-x7_en.html

I wish SEGA ported Sonic Generations to Linux
The linux fanbase will be over 9000

@Mitch looks better but I can't tell for sure.

@AmithKK Wasn't there some blender based FOSS game with a Dog that was mostly PoC for making OSS based games?

@aking1012 I forget

12:04 PM
Seems like there was and it was set up to be a less directed free movement type of thing...could have easily turned in to a sonic clone though
Open source user moddable diablo nostalgia, yes please: clintbellanger.net/rpg/screenshots.php

I need a sonic model with rigging done

There are loads of rigging tutorials. If you start with makehuman, you get a rigged biped really fast...but then you have to manipulate it a lot to get a cartoony character. faster to just rig one you made

Seriously?
So.. I call upon you @RolandTaylor

Makehuman makes, well, humans with all the rigging and what-not done. Hair doesn't work well though

Alrighty, now for some python
I still don't know how to achieve this
I have this code
def getstudentheight():
 global height;
 global name;
 print("Student Name");
 name=input();
 print("Student Height");
 height=float(input());
@aking1012 How can I like use the same def to get the height of like x students?

12:18 PM
'''
'''

class students:
    '''
    '''
    def __init__(self):
        '''
        '''
        self.students = []

    def add_student(self, a_student):
        '''
        '''
        self.students.append(a_student)

my_list = students()
print my_list.students
or print my_list.students[:x]
@AmithKK I'ld call that set_student_height though...you're not getting, you're setting from the script's perspective

@aking1012 right
your a genius
So, that's like an array?
And I can like get the greatest height and link it to a student?

that's a for loop.
there really should be a dict to list conversion function built in to python

12:36 PM
didn't test it, but it probably works

I just realised that nobody is safe on another persons network

unless you tunnel everything

Yeah
@aking1012 I'm no programmer but
What does _init_ do?

it's what runs when you do this ` my_list = students()` ... so it makes sure self.students exists, so you don't try to append to a non-existent attribute

Adalarasani'm the very new one to this platform. So i want to know the main differences between the Unix and Linux ?

12:49 PM
@AmithKK otherwise you're stuck doing something like checking if it exists every time you want to use it...much more proper to just declare it in init

uhm.... why are random questions for linux being tagged for Ubuntu on U&L

Oh @Lord
@LordofTime I think the first one is a re-ask of one we have over here...and I think the second is a dupe

ah
well FLAG THEM
already submitted edits to remove the ubuntu tags

Q: Is Linux a Unix?

Shawn J. GoffSo, there are lots of different versions of Unix out there: HP-UX, AIX, BSD, etc. Linux is considered a Unix clone rather than an implementation of Unix. Are all the "real" Unices actual descendants of the original? If not, what separates Linux from Unix?

@jokerdino don't say that to Roland.

will he rage about it?

FF 12 was running at 280 MB and FF 13 peaks at north of 450 MB.

Q: Installing a gedit plugin on Fedora

WhiteBitI have been trying to install a gedit plugin called RunC to compile C programs using the text editor. Although the instructions tell me to use ubuntu 9 or 10 for this, I'm currently running Fedora 16. I thought that I would not have much problems, but after running the shell script using the sh ...

@UbuntuQuestionsonUL Why on earth is it tagged Ubuntu?!?

1:14 PM
I think someone is just being a pain. 3 not really ubuntu questions in the last 10 minutes

jrg
want the U&L bot gone then?

I say yes.

I'm fine with it either way, it's just my opinion that it might be someone(s) that thinks the two should be merged

people are using the ubuntu tag in passing
i think we should go have a talk with their mods
because it ends up spamming here
</annoyed>
although having said this, it does get me +2 rep for each edit i make of it to remove that tag XD

alternately it could be that some users know if they tag it that way it will get more exposure here...so it's mixed bag i guess

1:18 PM
the spam is the issue
i dont like it
should still probably yell at their mods :p

jrg
don't, it's "our" fault because we added the feed to the room

Firefox-Nightly is less hungry than the stable release. sigh

@jrg i meant with the "ubuntu" tag being used incorrectly

jrg
@LordofTime oh, do we nag our mods about the [error] tag being used incorrectly?

@jrg good idea.

1:23 PM
@jokerdino I gave up on Firefox a couple weeks ago and started using Chrome again

@jrg i thought we eradicated the error tag

jrg
@jokerdino.... I already destroy at least 30-40 q's a day with that tag. Don't make me feel bad about that.

and did you create the alias for symbolic-link such that [symlink] -> [symbolic-link]

jrg
@LordofTime nope
I did get the symlink one iirc

@adempewolff I like FF for general browsing, but webkit based just has better HTML5 support

1:24 PM
@jrg doesnt seem that way

@adempewolff I would have used Chrome but it doesn't have that 'native' look. but i could hop again if I don't like the way it is currently going.

jrg
@LordofTime hm.

@jokerdino chromium looks relatively native

jrg
@jokerdino just hack chrome and make it use the gtk theme
@LordofTime just did it

@aking1012 will try it then. thanks for the tip.

1:27 PM
yep, thanks

jrg
see, that's why you need to post these things on meta. Otherwise, we don't see it/we forget about it/etc

@jrg that's a joke right?

jrg
@jokerdino No. Chrome settings > Personal

@jokerdino Oh I meant Chromium. Chrome is a hideous blue color. Chromium fits in a lot better.

@jrg cba to do that though :P

jrg
1:27 PM

not for minor synonyms

jrg
@LordofTime Then don't complain about it. ;P

@jrg if i were a god user, i'd just do it myself
but alas i'm not :p

@jrg you can also just right click on the title bar to switch back and forth

@jrg ah, that one. i think i have it enabled.

1:28 PM
(besides, meta lags more than AU)

jrg
@adempewolff That only works for "Use system title bars and borders", not GTK+ theme

@adempewolff chrome is not blue. but I have both of them installed.

@jrg right, misunderstood the question

jrg
@LordofTime well then, that sounds like a you problem.

don't go there
seriously don't go there

1:29 PM
buenas mornings

hiya @Jorge
how goes the universe

@jokerdino I feel like the original linux port was. I remember being horrified. Oh, I see, "use classic" produces the hideous blue theme. The default is "Use GTK+" which is not hideous blue.

@adempewolff alright. i am going to try the 8 different browsers I have installed in my computer.

jrg
Chrome by default is blue.

1:31 PM
@JorgeCastro morning

@adempewolff @jrg ah, i was mistakenly talking about the icon.. ugh, the default theme is ugly blue indeed.

jrg
@jokerdino oh, i use the Faenza iconset, so I wouldn't notice.

@jokerdino I can't vouch for the Chrome icon, but the Chromium one fits in quite well I think.

whoever wrote the rmadison tool is awesome.

You know what would be neat? A payment proxy service. So you could say, translate paypal in to a credit card payment or vice-versa. I think it would be particularly useful for parts of the world that do not allow paypal.
Ubuntu relevance is that it came up on the app developer mailing list

3:28 PM
there is no such thing as a payment proxy service
all money transactions need to be done directly
because of the regulation of money transfers
(and the privacy aspect)

i know that's the reality of the thing. it's just in my opinion an out-moded form of regulation given the whole global economy thing

<example of phishing>
well you could use a go between. Give me the money, then I'll forward that on to the banks you want to transfer the money to, so everything gets done.
</example of a phishing attempt which is VERY COMMON>

agreed. that and you would essentially be a professional money mule. there would need to be a lot of validation/verification

note, that's me just proving a point, not me trying to thieve from someone ;P
@aking1012 which doesn't happen. that's actually pretty illegal nowadays
at least in the US

@AmithKK no, mouse only. like hotkey to set pinch point at cursor etc
@AmithKK if you want an answer on that, you need to specify some other link. i just get an error page since i don't have an existing session on that link

no the dropdown doesn't work for me either

@AmithKK works on FF if you follow the link I dropped
