@jrg: You reported that NitroShare wasn't working in Unity2D?

jrg
@GeorgeEdison correct

I'm having trouble reproducing that.
What was the problem. exactly?

I tried it with xubuntu, I'll log in to ubuntu 2d and try it in a sec

jrg
The share box was completely hidden.
or nonexistent, i couldn't figure out which

jrg
12:25 AM
that looks like a unholy combo of GNOME-shell and unity 2d. :P
let me update and try again

It is :P
I have the Gnome theme set but switched to Unity 2D.

uh.... hi?

jrg
i'm having issues getting my head around that. ;P
Howdy @TheX!

Hows it going?

jrg
it's going alright, yourself?

12:28 AM
Just got home...
drove by your house this week...

jrg
so you're the guy who yelled at me to get a license while I was riding my bike?
;)

lol no... but that would have been funny

Q: Using Wayback Machine of internet archive

ObsessiveFOSSI have read on a different meta post that there is a system being implemented to fix bad links systematically. Could it be set up to automatically use the Wayback machine to automatically redirect until a reviewer finds a more up-to-date link?

I went to Gettysburg, PA and drove through the Cleveland area.

Seattle is the farthest south I have been :P

jrg
12:31 AM
Cool!
@TheX did you see our wonderful east side? It's really cool, it scares the living daylights out of some people from Chicago supposedly.

I'm not sure... I was really little when this happened.

jrg
(sorry, i think we're holding like three conversations at once. ;P)

Nah, we didn't really go through Cleveland per say...

Lol... I think you're right.

But we did drive by the Football Hall of Fame

jrg
12:33 AM
cool.
that's canton. thats like, the other side of the world from here, relatively speaking. ;P

I don't know why people would from Chicago would be scared of Cleveland... they have the South Side after all...

@GeorgeEdison min didn't show at first either, @jrg did you click on the launcher once it started

Yeah on the way down there we stayed with my aunt for 2 nights, and she lives Southern(?) Ohio

I think I can fix that then.

jrg
12:35 AM
Still no luck @GeorgeEdison and @mateosalta

Hmmm... does it show up in the panel?
(Like the icon?)

jrg
shows up in the panel
shows up in alt-tab
but i can't see the window

oh, I clicked on my gnome-panel to get it, the launcher doesn't toggle it

jrg
hangon, let me grab a screenshot

@jrg One last idea. Can you close the program, delete ~/.config/Nathan Osman/NitroShare.conf, and start it again?

jrg
12:38 AM

(Just in case the configuration is messed up.)

same here @jrg

Oh... I see.
Can you drop stuff in that area?

jrg
same (after conf reset)
let me try
yes, i can

the box only highlights on alt+tab

12:39 AM
Ah, so it could be a compositing issue.

I think i'm using xcompmanager

jrg
yes, if i had money to bet on it that'd be it.
i'm just using straight metacity, i'm too lazy to change things up. :P

Maybe I should disable the translucency on Unity2D then.

once I bring it up with gnome-panel it looks like this

Hmmm...

12:44 AM
no go when deleting the configuration file

sounds like a file a bug upstream with QT transparency type of situation or a disable transparency setting

Well... the docs warn that not all window managers support the transparency flag.
But I expected that the window would at least show up if it didn't.

what does the 2d launcher use for transparency?

I'm not sure... I thought it was Qt.
But I can't be sure.
> "Unity 2D is an implementation of Unity using Qt and QML."

:/

12:47 AM
because I have transparency on the launcher background
metacity?
is that what unity 2d usually uses

This looks like it might be relevant.
setAttribute(Qt::WA_X11NetWmWindowTypeDock);
setAttribute(Qt::WA_Hover);
Not sure what that means or what it does :P

looks like it checks if another composite manager is running
this part " if (QX11Info::isCompositingManagerRunning() && requiresTransparency) {
setAttribute(Qt::WA_TranslucentBackground);
} else {
setAutoFillBackground(true); "

Ah, maybe that's what I need to do as well.

worth a shot
brb, going to try other desktops
lubuntu worked, had no transparency, but it worked with transparency when I did metacity --replace

1:09 AM
That's good.

so it's not something to do with metacity in general... I think
kde plasma worked, did metacity --replace and it the effects went away, then it disappeared can't bring it up and the alt+tab like before.

Yeah, KDE is built on Qt, so it should work relatively well there.

so metacity + something that is in kde and unity, that isn't in lubuntu
well, at least it comes up as a black box when launching again with kde+metacity

1:30 AM
ok, I think this might be something, @jrg try switching workspace back and forth a couple of times I was able to get the box to appear on unity 2d
and it works when I kill metacity on unity 2d

Bounty offered: How to add vte terminal widget in GTK3? http://askubuntu.com/questions/154354/how-to-add-vte-terminal-widget-in-gtk3?atw=1 #python

1:46 AM
@GeorgeEdison It acts like it is behind something, Is there a way to tell it to bring the window to the current workspace on start, maybe the setting to put it behind windows put it behind the nautilus background.

That could be.
I'll try some other techniques to get it to stay where I want it.

ok, I think i've done all I can with testing it for now.

Thanks for doing that.
I really appreciate it.

side-note, just got my first 'hello_ogre3d.cpp' to compile

Great!

1:50 AM
cool

2:28 AM
hmm
what tools do you guys use to change something to sentence case?

Hello, Good morning

good morning.

It is required to run that app : sudo apt-get install libmono-winforms2.0-cil, though not packaged yet in .deb format

oh let me check
aha, it works.

@jokerdino Is this what is asked? Should it be packaged in .deb format?

2:41 AM
i think i am fine now that it works.
i wouldn't want to force you to do anymore work. you are already awesome in my books.

We can simply include a README file, which tells the user about the dependency package, can also include a script which extract the files in /usr/share/bin so that, people can run this from terminal

hmm
since i am like the only user, it should be alright :P

Thanks, then

no, thank YOU

I'll do it, and include an icon.

2:44 AM
hmm
you are too awesome.
:D

A: Ubuntu unstable, showing awkward behavior

FUCK_USHITUhere is the problem: Ushitu Unity 3d channels the rich african tradition of brutally raping naive children like yourself full of niggerAIDS. Ushitu does this by making the default install terrible, laggy and unstable. If you google "compiz optimization ushitu 12.04" you will get some hints on ...

free offensive flag everyone.

A: Why is Ask Ubuntu being linked to from Apport?

BryceSo the background here is we get tons and tons of "bug reports" filed against X in the stable release which are utterly useless. And most of the time the user is really only looking for a workaround to get their system working again. It's not hard to find a workaround (installing and running th...

@GeorgeEdison I have nitroshare on both systems, and I'll be able to test tomorrow (when I have racked up some sleep :D)

There are some configuration files that I think we should be asking the OP of this question to provide, but I don't remember which one(s). Perhaps someone knows and can comment (or let me know and I'll edit/redo my comment).

Q: apache permissions problem

nishanIm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on a system with 2 GB RAM and a 500 GB HDD. My hard drive has 4 partitions: Partition 1 = 40 gb Windows (NTFS, lable = win32) Partition 2 = 320 gb Windows (FAT label = common) Partition 3 = 40 gb Ubuntu (EXT4) I installed apached2. Then, to change its default www ...

3:16 AM
@jokerdino That's interesting. I see the reasoning, but I can't say I see an achievable way to do what he had in mind.

@EliahKagan no exp with apache :/
@aking1012 it might help if we can have a closer eye on the incoming queue.. so we can make a bunch of questions.

well i think at least half of the ones that were coming in were "hybrid graphics" or "intel bugs"
both of which already have good questions/answers

sounds like lack of man power?

well it sounds like forward motivation and not being worth as much time since most bugs filed against X according to the post are going to get fixed up-stream and aren't really X bugs at all. so real fixes typically don't get applied by X

hmm sounds like it.

3:23 AM
I have a problem with a removable drive :S
it's showing as read only
I had pulled it out without unmounting (a bit tired and was asked to do something that required the same cable :S)
Any clue how I can work around this?

fsck it

tried that :S

and?

format it?

did it find and fix errors?
You'll need to unmount it and mount it fresh after the fsck

3:25 AM
I was using Disk Utility, and it didn't report any errors

check dmesg for errors?

is it actually mounted ro, or do you just not have permission?

[270787.355768] FAT-fs (sdb1): error, invalid access to FAT (entry 0x4a0a8058)

well that's not a terribly helpful error message... try fscking it from the command line
or from windows
since it's fat

3:27 AM
I am trying from the commandline but getting an error (unless I'm doing something wrong)
sudo fsck.vfat /media/SAMSUNG

you fsck a device, not a directory... /dev/sdb1

oh sorry
I am sleepy so....
forgive me
(I should be doing this when I'm more "awake")

/me is sick and tired of rain... it has rained ALL DAY

wow
I would love that

@jokerdino nice

hmm
why does FF go crazy whenever I open G+ ?
@RolandTaylor Just read your msg on Google group.
Why not set up filters on Gmail?

3:42 AM
@jokerdino need user delete if it continues

@jokerdino I didn't get around to it, because I was using thunderbird until the stupid memory leak hit Ubuntu's nightly builds

seems like much the same message as before

@aking1012 sort of sounds like it was a comment to the previous message but weird still
@RolandTaylor ooh. i can't use desktop email apps because of the protocol being blocked. i stick around with the web interface

@jokerdino it wasn't posted until after sathya's edit

@aking1012 oh good point.

3:44 AM
like substantially after

hmm yeah.

i flagged as offensive...and that's the basis

This removable hard drive is driving me nuts along with other issues...

@RolandTaylor get some sleep and fix it in the morning. really

I can't
see the problem is my father has to use it too
and... well... yeah

3:51 AM
uh :/

"Leaving file system unchanged."
I'm about ready to flip a table

lol
i am now considering closing my yahoo and hotmail account and import all of the emails to Gmail.

I don't use my yahoo, and hardly ever check hotmail lol

exact same reason :D
i use hotmail id for subscribing to all the newsletters. xD
and then never really bother checking the emails

this is so annoying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(I mean this hard drive of course)
How can I mount it read/write?
I am too tired for the madness that is Linux right now
and the stupidity that is windows _-

3:57 AM
try it on Win and see if that helps?

I might have to do that :S
It is my laptop being stupid I see

is it?

did you not try formatting the drive?

restarting
@jokerdino nope, can't risk that
would lose the files on it
and then have to put up with... stress
and I have enough of that

4:04 AM
argh.

restarting

you shouldn't have plugged out the drive :/

it apparently is just this laptop being stupid
it worked on the other one
so I'll restart

good luck
or perhaps, if it works on the other one, get the data and format it?
hmm my absolutely empty tumblr has 4 followers
The more I look at it, it looks like an awesome blogging platform. the current users and the content spoils the platform. :/

i don't think i spoil it...

4:18 AM
not you. for sure
those annoying GIFs. uggh

Sorry for the delayed feedback, was getting some other stuff done

well, so is it working now or what?

yep
it really was my laptop being an idiot

am glad it does

^_^
at least now with my "responsibilities" out of the way, I can relax :)

A: Is it okay to send old questions to doom?

Robert HarveyIn general, votes are yours to do with as you please. The only exception is targeting a specific user with votes. However, I think a good rule of thumb for this is to use your vote for those questions that do not add any value to the site. If a question is closed as too localized, poorly forma...

let's all send poor questions to doom!!

@jokerdino I have written a small script, which add an icon in the dash and install the required package, but the icon in launcher is ugly, I ask Uncle google and AskUbuntu , but no help. So i am not posting another link here. If i can fix that, I will inform you later.

@AnwarShah heh the icon wasn't really my worry. getting it to work was.
and since you already got it to work, i wouldn't ask you to do more work :/

5:42 AM
OK.

btw, you can use it for your editing.

@AnwarShah let me see, i had a nice free stock icon site at one point

About the question in meta: Which question is considered old. If a question is asked 1 month ago, but edited recently, say 1 week ago, Is that question still considered old?

izx
It appears from scanning the active list that the single best thing I can do to get people's questions answered is to edit their titles to be accurate and catchy...

@AnwarShah well, look at the search results. Pages from 40-70 should be relatively old.

5:44 AM
@aking1012, The icon was good, but the problem is in launcher it is showing like this

oh that's the default i have no icon associated with me icon
so it can't find it

but in dash , it is very good

the unity launcher might want/expect a specific size

Changed icon size from 48~32, still same

5:49 AM
i used 72x72 and only one icon with no size in name characteristic
[Desktop Entry]

I'll give it a look. Not feeling actually installing it, but I'll just try swapping around some desktop files and executable names. We'll see
