@stueng IIRC Xen needs(needed at one point, but it may have been fixed by now) a custom bit for windows to work

Oops. Found and fixed a memory leak.

Anyone sort of know any time management / planning app?

i think you've asked that before...

i don't think gnome-planner cuts it out.

@GeorgeEdison Yay for bug fixes. I found some faulty logic. I have it sorted out now as long as you don't try to make maps of the poles

and i was previously asking for a task management tool not time management IIRC

2:46 AM
yeah. the two concepts blend together for me

It's kind of funny the way I jump back and forth between my main machine and the netbook. I'm working on a super small screen and then a really big one. I'm waiting 3 minutes for the project to rebuild and then I'm waiting a few seconds. Such a big difference.

3:15 AM
oh boy, this question makes my brain want to dump: askubuntu.com/q/154829/8500
I currently lack the patience to form a kind/helpful response

@psusi close it as NARQ please
i already took quite a severe brain damage.
anyway, brb.

Finally... I found the source of the bug.
Seems like sending multiple files was causing the issue.
Anyway, now I can fix it.

multiple files concurrently? or in sequence?
if it was in sequence, you might want to check concurrently

Should this tag exist?
[ubuntu-n]

@aking1012 The problem was with the way the socket was reading data. If multiple packets arrived in a single packet, it would only read one of them.

Oh, he was trying to remove ubuntu-netbook tag, but wasn't successful
@njallam, remove that one

@GeorgeEdison okay. i just didn't know where the problem was laying

sure

I am reading this, as i am new in chat ngureco.hubpages.com/question/17328/…

5:16 AM
I changed it to [ubuntu-netbook]
Also how do you post tags in chat?

@njallam, no no remove that full

Oh I see

@aking1012 Now I just need to come up with a good while loop that encompasses the logic.

Rubber duck debugging, Rubber Ducking, or the Rubber Duckie Test is an informal term used in software engineering to refer to a method of debugging code. The name is a reference to an apocryphal story in which an unnamed expert programmer would keep a rubber duck by his desk at all times, and debug his code by forcing himself to explain it, line-by-line, to the duck. To use this process, a programmer meticulously explains code to an inanimate object, such as a rubber duck, in the expectation that upon reaching a piece of incorrect code and trying to explain it, the programmer will notice...

@aking1012 I totally know what that means

oh. he had a problem earlier that he solved, but he has another bit to implement. so i gave him a ducky

5:22 AM
O @mateo_salta ... why do must you rage against :P

How do you do that, the tags in chat?

Why is there a song in my library called "Lick the Rainbow"?

izx
@njallam You tell us, buddy....or go to psychoanalysis.SE ;)

@GeorgeEdison One of my more interesting comments in something I wrote for nuking rogue processes had funny variable names. One line actually read: 'izInUrBase = killinUrDoodz' or something like that

That's almost always a sign you've been working on a bug late at night :)

In Java my code crys at the end of each line ");"
@GeorgeEdison And yes, from experience that is not a good idea
My question to you is. Why do questions with answers show up in the "Unanswered" section?

Because the answers aren't accepted.

5:30 AM
@njallam was a for fun thing... like the level of prejudice to attack the process with was defined in tiers Maximum-prejudice, kill-it-with-fire, and Persona-non-grata if I remember correctly
it ALMOST makes the code fun to go back and re-read sometimes

I find that when I debug late at night, I break more things than I fix...

I only work on a particular feature if it's late at night. Sometimes I don't even understand what I was thinking the next morning and purge it. Other times there's something brilliant in there...it's mixed bag
Though you're right, it leans more towards purge most of the time

I now have the Python equivalent of a NullPointerException somewhere. Except Python doesn't crash on that kind of thing, which is good, and annoying.

Q: Unable to log in to the Clean-Up site with a Google OpenID

coversnailSince the 27th May I've been unable to log in to cleanup.thepcspy.com with the Google OpenID that I was previously using, I keep getting a "500 Internal Server Error, Cherokee web server, Port 80" error. Using Launchpad OpenID works fine as does Yahoo so no great problem, just thought I'd mentio...

@izx Looks pretty good to me. Two thoughts: (1) Someone who hasn't attempted to install the .deb already (or who purged it) will not already have the .desktop file, so if this is to be made a canonical answer, it will have to explain how to find that and put it where it needs to be. (2) Just so it's totally clear, in i.stack.imgur.com/ZOGa3.png, you may want to show a tiny curved red arrow from the icon you right-click to the contextual menu that comes up for it.

@oli still wont work ,it says bad gateway meta.askubuntu.com/questions/3277/…

5:56 AM
@njallam: good edit, but what does "Commer Positioning" mean?

@izx A (3)rd thought: You might want to include information, or a link to information, about how to mount a .tar archive for users of Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Lubuntu. A command-line alternative way might be best, as that will work for everyone. (You should keep the current GNOME instructions though--those will work, and are best, for most users.)

text ,text -> text, text
It was a very bad description, I changed some grammer too

izx
@EliahKagan If the deb-tar has a .desktop file in /usr/share/applications and it is extracted, won't that automatically give it visibility in the HUD, etc.?

Q: HDI: Dim the screen beyond the typical maximum?

user115360I'm on a Dell Latitude E6320, and the screen doesn't get very dim. It's way too bright even when it's dimmed as far as Ubuntu will let it. How do I dim it more? For example, when you have this problem on a windows system, you can install a program like Dimmer (http://www.mylittlehost.com/dimme...

@izx Oh, I see...yes, I think it will. Never mind that criticism.

5:59 AM
Who does the themes for these sites?

izx
@EliahKagan It's important to include info on creating a launcher though, because not every package will have one. Do you know off-hand if mounting a tar via the GUI is possible in Thunar, PCmanfm, and (I forget: KDE file man)?

@njallam one of the Canonical design team member did for Ask Ubuntu.

@jokerdino It is by far the best of any StackExchange I have seen

Q: Please make the "Ask Question" button on AskUbuntu more prominent

SriranganI'm a user familiar with StackOverflow websites but it took me a while to locate the Ask Question button on AskUbuntu. Reason: Insufficient contrast (as can be seen below). A single grey / translucent back background should fix the problem.

and there are ppl who dont use ubuntu coz its too orange
@jokerdino I thought that was ubuntu. when did we change the name??

@Mitch hi

izx
6:03 AM
@jokerdino, do you cull your zero-vote answers periodically?

@izx IIRC you can only start from the back. no flipping the order

If an answer to a question is a bug, how would you answer it?

izx
@Mitch Yes, make it known far and wide...name and shame...you get the idea ;)

@izx mostly, no. I get people to vote on it.

:P

izx
6:04 AM
@jokerdino which is how....(beyond the usual nags in the comments)?

but I do remember deleting no vote answers when there are better answers.

ok, gtg. BBT

@izx I remember getting a couple of votes during the clean up week done by Oli.
@njallam Dot patterns are assets? OH GAWD

Is 42.31% a decent accepted rate, or do I need to nag people more?

6:06 AM
@izx I think 30% above is good enough already.
I think I have a 40+ score myself though.

@izx I can open a an archive with Archive Mounter in PCManFM, but it's not appearing as a drive. If I manually navigate with PCManFM to ~/.gvfs, I can access it in there.

@Mahesh bye

Yes! I can listen to the radio again!

@izx 60+ is good

@njallam hopefully it won't crash.
@tachyons accepted rate =! accept rate

@jokerdino Don't jinx it :P

@EliahKagan Thanks, I'll check things out and try to edit it during the weekend.

Q: Answering a question by using information from the Web

MitchI had answered a question by using information from the web, and citing the source. But then I modified the answer, and put it in my own words, and direct it specifically to Ubuntu, and the user who asked the question, and also citied the source. askubuntu.com/questions/154829/… poor question must be closed to save the kittens.

@EliahKagan Ideally, that answer needs to be merged with Marco's, with MyUnity headlined, a break with the OOGA-BOOGA-CCSM warning, and then the CCSM steps. The edit is accurate, though.
Does MyUnity work in 11.04? IIRC it does.

Anyone wishing to answer this askubuntu.com/q/154784/61218

8:21 AM
@AnwarShah It seems pretty clear that the OP's intent is to ask how to uninstall Ubuntu itself. It should probably be duped to this. In the very unlikely event that the OP intended to also ask something about U1, they can comment to indicate this, or post a new question just about U1 and not also about making a Windows-only system from a system that has Ubuntu.
Speaking of which, this question should probably be either (1) duped to a question about backing up data from a broken Ubuntu system, with a comment added pointing to the canonical password resetting question, or (2) duped to the canonical password resetting question, with a comment added poiting to a question about backing up data from a broken Ubuntu system.

I'm in that weird place on youtube where lots of stuff is interesting, but I have no idea how i got there
side note, it seems the defenders failed again...thehackernews.com/2012/06/…

Has anyone got an answer to this? meta.askubuntu.com/q/3532/61218

10:05 AM
@AnwarShah I put my response. I thought some mod might have a canonical policy to cite or something
@EliahKagan - I think we read that question differently (as to the OPs intent in asking). I think we addressed different things. If you want to incorporate the components of the issues I was looking at, I'll just delete my answer. I think they could be relevant though

@aking1012 I think it may be better for our answers both to remain, but be separate. I have some familiarity with the edits that went on to the specific answer being referred to in the question, and I responded as specifically as possible to that. There are other useful answers that could be posted to this question, to address other aspects of the general issue.

fair point. i hadn't tracked that particular question

Q: How do I prevent standard users from using the USB ports?

RajaI'm admin for one of my college PC with 3 other normal users . If possible I want to restrict other 3 normal users from using USB. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 .

...I don't think they're actually the same question.
One of them is asking how to disable USB ports altogether, and the other is asking how to restrict use of USB ports to certain users. The only answer so far to the latter question says to disable them, then re-enable them manually to use them, but there may be other answers that would not fit with the former question. It seems to me that these questions,while they appear similar, should not be merged.

possibly. i don't think that's horribly do-able in a realistic way, but that's just me. i'll nuke the comment on meta about dupe though

10:20 AM
@aking1012 You might want to delete the comment on meta, but suggest the connection in askubuntu.com/questions/153964/… itself. It may be decided that you're right and that they should be duped. And if you feel strongly that it's a dupe, then you should go ahead and cast the close vote. The community can decide.

will do

@aking1012 It occurs to me that preventing some users from using USB devices while letting other USB devices operate at the same time might be unfeasible ...but preventing some users from mounting or accessing USB storage devices while allowing them to be attached and mounted for other purposes is quite feasable. It might be that what this question needs is more information from the OP.

exactly so. if it's storage it's completely doable
