is the cp command satisfactory for copying all the files on my disk to another disk, including all hidden files and locked files?

@MarcoCeppi, so can you give me an example with rsync because the man page didn't seemh helpful. ex (sudo rsync /home/user /media/disk/user) <== is ok?

sudo rsync -avz /home/usr /media/disk/user

-a does all files and folders, -v is verbose output - so you know where in the copy it is -z uses compression to make the transfer faster

Well, yes - but also it has the ability to resume where it left of - if you have to kill it halfway

it just uses compression for the actual movement of the files

yeah, so you get a read out - and it'll resume where it left of (since it does a diff on the destination and the source)

rsync is one of those things I love in my back pocket as a system admin

@MarcoCeppi, awesome thanks. One last thing. rsyncing the /home/user folder to /media/disk will result in a folder in /media/disk with the name "user"?

not /media/user/* but /media/user/ will do the trick

Can I do rsync /dev/sdc /dev/sdd ?

one of the disks I want to copy has the same name as the other one so it won't let me mount it

if I can use /dev/sdc /dev/sdd then that would help mabe

now just trying to rsync /dev/sdc to /dev/sdd

didn't see any examples of that in the rsync man page, though the man page is 100 pages long O_o

It should work just like normal

rsync -avz /defv/sdc/ /dev/sdd/
