Using word list to brute force encrypted partition http://bit.ly/k9stJU #encryption

\o/ 90's Internet propaganda ftw

12:54 AM
@lazyPower That's what I do on a daily basis

1:40 AM
Surf around in your velcro shoes on a legacy keyboard attached to a mouse? heck yeah
hi5 brudda

1:56 AM
is the cp command satisfactory for copying all the files on my disk to another disk, including all hidden files and locked files?

@JoshuaRobison Yes, but I recommend rsync

@MarcoCeppi, so can you give me an example with rsync because the man page didn't seemh helpful. ex (sudo rsync /home/user /media/disk/user) <== is ok?

sudo rsync -avz /home/usr /media/disk/user

@MarcoCeppi is rsync faster?

-a does all files and folders, -v is verbose output - so you know where in the copy it is -z uses compression to make the transfer faster

2:02 AM
@MarcoCeppi, and the resulting files will be uncompressed right?

Well, yes - but also it has the ability to resume where it left of - if you have to kill it halfway
@JoshuaRobison Correct
it just uses compression for the actual movement of the files

@MarcoCeppi, wow! rsync is great! cause I always have to fool around to get read out on where it is in the copy

yeah, so you get a read out - and it'll resume where it left of (since it does a diff on the destination and the source)
rsync is one of those things I love in my back pocket as a system admin

@MarcoCeppi, awesome thanks. One last thing. rsyncing the /home/user folder to /media/disk will result in a folder in /media/disk with the name "user"?
awww. it put the user's folder in there :(
hmm... any way to get it to just put the contents of the user's folder in there?
rsync /media/user/* /media/disk ??? maybe
rsync /media/user/* will just copy the contents of the folder right?
figured it out
not /media/user/* but /media/user/ will do the trick
Can I do rsync /dev/sdc /dev/sdd ?
one of the disks I want to copy has the same name as the other one so it won't let me mount it
if I can use /dev/sdc /dev/sdd then that would help mabe

2:28 AM
Sorry, was AFK

: ) I figure out one of the questions on my own
now just trying to rsync /dev/sdc to /dev/sdd
didn't see any examples of that in the rsync man page, though the man page is 100 pages long O_o

It should work just like normal
rsync -avz /defv/sdc/ /dev/sdd/

@MarcoCeppi, thanks. Ill try that out. gotta reboot

2:57 AM

@MarcoCeppi Wha.... I need to get some fresh air.

In philosophy, the brain in a vat is an element used in a variety of thought experiments intended to draw out certain features of our ideas of knowledge, reality, truth, mind, and meaning. It is drawn from the idea, common to many science fiction stories, that a mad scientist, machine or other entity might remove a person's brain from the body, suspend it in a vat of life-sustaining liquid, and connect its neurons by wires to a supercomputer which would provide it with electrical impulses identical to those the brain normally receives. According to such stories, the computer would then b...
^---- This gives me a headache.

@GeorgeEdison its science fiction go figure ;)

@lazyPower Well... the part about the headache was supposed to be a bit of a pun.

oh... stupid beer, ruining my sense of geek humor

Q: How do I set up an Opera Web Kiosk?

James GiffordIs there a way to setup a web kiosk that uses the Opera browser, and is self resetting so that there isn't any chance that someone could hijack it?

I made a script to install few plugins. However someone needs to sit infront of the system to press y to install softwares..Is it possible to mount automate the task??How to pass yes in a bash script?

Ubuntu One Sync as a File Backup Solution? http://bit.ly/kL85X9 #ubuntuone

6:59 AM
stupid bruins :(
@StefanoPalazzo your wish is my upvote!

Good morning all

morning @Takkat

loves questions like this kiosk one

me too!
I got a good question too but I am hesitant >:D

in fact the answer makes it great

7:02 AM
I always am cuz to me it is like admitting defeat in solving it myself >:D

Hesitation makes good questions either better or worse
I sometimes ask questions only because I think this q is missing

I bought a logitech harmony 650 remote and back in 10.04 I could have it work with Ubuntu and FF (needs online setup through logitechs website) but it does not work :(

online setup sounds bad

(needed congruity and concordance from synaptic and that would take care of the downloads and responces to the website) Used to work flawlessly but it doesn't anymore
probably cuz the ubuntu software is too old :*(
yay \o/ Lucic \o/

I never played with remotes
(well not on my Ubuntu box)

7:08 AM
:D
I can set it back at work tomorrow :) :) so it'll work out (not going to install win just for this :+) )
oh I got another enlightend answer y-day \o/

Enlightened forever \o/

half way another good answer too :D
my aim is legendary >:D

Good answer imo is the same: only if you were really fast you get a silver badge
Legendary is hard to get

I've got 11 200+'s >:D
139 to go
today will be easy I hope >:D ->> askubuntu.com/questions/41794/…
YAY Bruins 2-1 \o/
@Takkat legendary is easy >:D it is just alot of work >:D
\o/ another 10 rep for me \o/ :D

yeah - I'm too lazy for that

7:14 AM
I bet that was you again? :-X

nope - haven't voted much today (yet)

here's another good one from y-day: askubuntu.com/questions/46946/…
I answered it 1ST 3 minutes later scouser inserts exaclty the same program I came up with with exactly them same image from the web :D

I liked that - can't vote on removed answers :P

I deleted mine cuz I was on 200 rep allready ;)

I hate it to remove an answer when a better one pops in
(mostly mine is better - then I leave it)

7:17 AM
oh you can always edit tomake it better ;)
or have Marco fix it up :D :D
check the editing on this answer from me :D askubuntu.com/questions/46930/…
Jorge and Marco where all over it :D :D so much oxwivi asked for someone to fix it :D

lol - not much left from the original

well if there is it's a coincidence :D :D
like the word "a" or "the" :D

what I hate most: I post a better answer to see that first answer is being edited including mine and then gets votes and accepted
That's why I sometimes just edit the bad answer instead of posting another one
That makes the site better in the end.

oh that's where comments come in handy ;)
"are you sure it works like that?look at my answer" >:D

yeah I do that for errors - but sometimes it's just design or some shots
(I rarely do shots for others)
(only if they are <100 rep ppl)

7:26 AM
and I myself do not mind others getting rep ;) Ill just move on and find another q :D :D

:)

AU is a competition but more one I myself create: can I get to 200 today.

:) :) :)

FAQ answers are the best :D Just c/p :) (the one I answered about USB is 100% c/p and got me 120 rep :D)
Plus I always go for q's that help myself get more experienced O+

yeah that's sometimes weird what you get rep for.
@Rinzwind love q where you get an idea how to and elaborate it
(they are rare) (for me)

7:30 AM
@Takkat oh you know it all? >:-D

@Rinzwind no - I usually get no idea :P

that's when search skills come into play >:D

you could learn all manpages by heart and answer 20% with a single liner

oh I got one for you on that >:D
my answer would have been "/opt" :D

Q: Recommendation for a place for software not installed by Ubuntu Package Manager/Software Center?

AufwindIf I download software by the Ubuntu Package Manager or Ubuntu Software Center, everything is taken care automatically. But if I download software like eclipse, where is the right place for it? I can't believe, that leaving it in the home directory is the right way in linux... :-)

but it had to be 30 chars so I also c/p the faq >:D

:)

7:37 AM
lol
I got it accepted with 0 upvotes :D

it's definitely mor than 30

isn't there a badge for that? :D

@Rinzwind Unsung Hero!

yeah that one :D
checking it

and a silver one earlier

7:38 AM
"Zero score accepted answers: more than 10 and 25% of total" NEVER going to happen.

(I haven't even got that even though I have so many 0 vote accepted)

25% of total !? no way :X

no way!!!

nods
Tenacious × 1 is the other one
Zero score accepted answers: more than 5 and 20% of total

x1 says it all 20% is too much

7:40 AM
karthick87 is back under 10k again wtf

he wastes his rep on that clipboard ssh q

morning @htorque :D
30 more rep to go today :D then I need to wait 4 hours >:D
55 rep to go to become half the monster MarcoCeppi was y-day
he had 10,666 rep :D I would be on 5,666 rep :D
damn stupid vancouver scored again :(

the /opt q is a dupe ;)

noooo :D

felt 100 times asked before
(however not with Eclipse)

7:47 AM
IDEA blink blink
I get it closed with 0 upvotes >:D that would get me to unsung hero >:D

lol

If I do it alot of times :X

a lotalot of times

reason for closing "dupe: {link} and I want 'unsung hero'" :D

;D

7:49 AM
PM everyone to remove their upvote would work too :D :D

I am not so sure if Unsung Heros is prestigious
there are some badges I wouldn't want to have

it's like pokemon: you have to gather'm all >:D
insert squeeky voice at the end

morning

you are late @htorque >:D
9:40 I already spotted you :D
lol

i'm up much longer :P
went to bed at 4 got up at 7
now i'm tired :D

7:55 AM
:D

i was surprised how slow this is
even if you tweak cryptsetup to only use one try for the password and minimize the timeout - no change
takes about half a second to get one try on a mobile i5 dual core (using all four threads didn't change anything)

maybe they added a 'wait 25' in it to slow it down :D

three days for 400.000... i'd definitely clone that partition and use a small farm to crack it faster
wth? i already have 125 rep for today?

lol

now that's a nice good morning present :D

8:01 AM
you got 30 from me :=D
maybe takkat went berserk

thanks a bunch
i'm sure you got some from me last night

hey :D good a's deserve rep
I am still on 20 for today. can't seem to find the right q's :(

morning @htorque

whistles innocently

8:03 AM
morning!
yeah, @Rinzwind - you and @Takkat are BAAAAD voters :P

@htorque it's still early in the month :=D

we are 5 6 and 7 on quarterly
that will be my 1st gold I guess :D
75 votes to go O+
74 >:D

did you note @htorque's stork post here in chat? It made me laugh that much!

:D
Idiom:
rest on (one's) laurels
To rely on one's past achievements instead of working to maintain or advance one's status or reputation. :P
keep the votes comin' ;)

8:08 AM
refuses to vote on bad questions or answers

@Takkat I will vote on them but it will be a downvote >:D

i should do more downvotes

@Rinzwind: you only downvoted 6 times!

2300 up 53 down

53 :O

8:10 AM
@Takkat that's cuz my idea of "bad" is really bad >:D

same with me ;)

downvoting seems to be free (no -1)

@Rinzwind only on questions

ah on q's >:D

i don't downvote bad questions, i vote to close 'em :P

8:11 AM
don't know why - maybe to stop ppl from downvote orgies

-1 certainly wouldn't stop me :D

I always feel bad when I get a downvote
(and don't know why)

oooooooooh

@Takkat even worse is getting like 2 upvotes and then a downvote :D

i never got an explanation for downvotes
i don't care too much ;)

8:14 AM
@htorque that's wise!

check the q's votes: askubuntu.com/questions/39382/… he got that from being not friendly ;)

refuses to talk on that question

>:D

** I DONT WANT TO FIND A GAME, I WANT A SOURCE.** – Alvar May 2 at 19:46
got you -2 :P

oh you can see that? @htorque :D

8:15 AM
> Recieved 4 down-votes (0 on questions, 4 on answers)
@Rinzwind yeah, i can see deleted posts

at least my 2nd answer got me some rep back :D
well that comment made me -1 his q ;)

:-o @Takkat got a couple of downvotes
@Rinzwind too

13 votes done and I can not find another good q to vote on :*

bad boys! :>

lol

8:18 AM
we're evil

I bet most of them are due to the q being editted after the answer >:D
making the a invalid :(

takkat - 3 on questions, 17 on answers - rinzwind 16 on answers (in just 36 days :P)

these are my bad answers (should delete them)
That reminds me on deleting my closed questions...

deleting them will also give you the lost rep back !:-)

@htorque no it won't - unless this changed

8:21 AM
you need to trigger a rep recount at askubuntu.com/reputation

@htorque that was my attempt on getting -3 on 1 answer ;)

Peer Pressure

i'll never get that :P
i can't produce an answer worse enough to get three downvotes >:D
18 featured questions? MADNESS!

Now I remember why I can't delete my closed q: it has answers...
we do have a lot of bounty q recently

whhhhhhhhhhhhhe it worked I gained 1 rep :D
** rep today: 20

I got you beat on the way to legendary >:D

earned almost 200 reputation on 11 days :D

:D

you didn't beat me, because i'm not going for legendary :P

you are even more lazy than Takkat

8:30 AM
this is impossible

9 in 207 days = 150 in 8100 days -> over 22 years
@Takkat was that a challenge?

@htorque is too lazy for a challenge

;D

:D
@htorque this means 10 downvotes? I can't find any more in my rep :D
all gone O+

Recieved 15 down-votes (0 on questions, 15 on answers)

@htorque forget the cucumber \o/ "New Superbug Strain Found In Cows and People" science.slashdot.org/story/11/06/04/2040231/…
another 10 rep for you >:D

@Rinzwind oh no not milk!

where can i get a cow?
thanks!

the supermarket might know; they got milk :D

it's been a long time since i drank unpasteurized milk...
supermarkets don't get their milk from cows!

yes they do! D:

8:50 AM
they get it from this guy
doesn't look like a cow

waiting for a milk-like product made from gene manipulated bacteria

milk comes from a d00d? eeeeeeeew never drinks milk again.

@htorque do you know any site with info on hdd

like how transfers are handled?

no sry

and I finally got 8 new 1.5 lts of coca cola \o/

i don't thank that bandwidth is reserved

10:50 AM
@htorque it's ok :D I tried to find some stuff about it but came up blank too.

millions of calories

it's probably the OS that deals with it

don't think so
my guess is the controller shares bandwidth across all devices

not? I was thinking the os might prioritize based on bandwidth

so if device 1 doesn't need anything, device 2 gets the full part

10:52 AM
ah

but it's guesswork

@htorque well it's my own question....
and everyone died

if it's your own question, you should see up and downvotes in your reputation history

11:12 AM
wiki.ubuntu.com/home - look at that, then this - wiki.ubuntu.com/Home (Before I edit the first one)

@htorque I do, but I want to see all downvotes and up votes on one of my own question I din't get them all on the same day so I can't just start looking in my history! LOL

@Alvar Do you have the rep to click the votes button (Not to upvote/downvote, but in the middle of the two buttons)?

@JamesGifford I probably haven't then.. 855 rep at the moment...

@Alvar Ah.

:1094172 lol people really hate me LOL
@JamesGifford thanks! :D

11:19 AM
No they just didn't think the question was that good.
Upvotes are supposed to mean "this is a good question/answer"

but it's not a bad question you should get -1 for downvoting questions with more than +5! LOL

I'd say answer it.

ok

They're similar, but not close enough IMHO.

11:21 AM
later

Cya @Alvar
disappears I'll be back.

if you read any of the fsf documentation or rms's views on software why on earth will you ask him that question ?

why on earth would you ask him any questions? i don't care about his views...

@htorque just because you don't care no one cares ;)
this word also a a meaning specific to the computing context .

11:38 AM
@Alaukik exactly - more people should care about what i care :P

I always get rep when editing :(

I made an iso by "sudo dd if=/dev/sdc2 of=/media/disk/linux.iso"

the resulting iso file is 8gigs because the partition I copied is 8gigs but there is only 2gigs of data on the iso. How do I shrink the iso and get rid of all the empty space on it?

you can't, dd creates raw images

I need to get rid of the empty space and make the iso smaller so that I can DD it back to a smaller partition

use partclone instead
it's as easy as sudo partclone.ext4 -c -d -s /dev/sda1 -o sda1.img
restore: partclone.ext4 -r -d -s sda1.img -o /dev/sda1

11:51 AM
@htorque, so partclone is just like DD except that it only clones the used blocks?

right

that both fills me with rage and happiness at the same time
@htorque, Ive been running around the past week spending hours trying to figure out how to clone my disk and DD wont do it cause the disk I am cloning to is 1mb smaller than the one I am cloning >:(
No one told me about partclone until you

@JoshuaRobison next time ask htorque 1st ;)

you could also shrink the original partition using gparted from a live cd, copy and paste it to the smaller disk, then "unshrink" it again - but that's a lot of shrink magic, and i usually don't like to operate on partitions :D

@Rinzwind, right on lol

@htorque, so if I am cloning a fat32 drive would I do "sudo partclone.fat -c -d -s /dev/sda1 -o sda1.img" or does that matter?

partclone.fat32
partclone.
partclone.btrfs partclone.hfsplus
partclone.chkimg partclone.info

Q: How to install ubuntu through network boot?

karthick87We are planning to upgrade all ubuntu systems nearly 200 to the version 10.10(Maverick). It will be difficult for us to connect CD-Drive to every machine and then install ubuntu 10.10. So i am planning to install ubuntu through network boot. I have the image of ubuntu 10.10 in my system, using t...

hi @Takkat and @OctavianDamiean \o

Hi @karthick87
@karthick87 did you try this: askubuntu.com/q/23960/3940

@Takkat it seems to be quit complicated. i am looking for an easy solution

2:42 PM
@karthick87 it is rather complicated, that's why I never tried this out :/

uh :(

but maybe someone comes up with an easy thing - we'll see...

Yeah we will see :)

3:23 PM
@karthick87 I hate those q's :D it's too damn hard :D
