It advertises "WiFi connectable" and I was like "PFT, no way am I going to degrade my read/write speeds due to wifi"

@MarcoCeppi yeah I don't even know why they would include that as an option...
wtf would someone not put their NAS by their router???

I assume it's just a buzz word
The base runs an embedded linux kernel - and I know the root password :)
So I've been flipping out about building a new server. looking into SSD drives, like RAIDing 2 TB SSD SLD drives
But 1 TB internal drives are down below $50 bucks - so I think I'm just going to RAID hard drives instead

@GeorgeEdison Sure. Hangon a second.
Or two. Have to wait for it to finish crunching.
That's only about 100 of the 700 locations I have.
working on trying to get all 700 in. it freaks out. :P

I wonder where it's going to put me (since mine says 'My Computer') :)

"Not found"
Wow. (just dumped the entire list that I just got)

12:57 AM

Lol...

1:18 AM
@JamesGifford so where can we see the usernames of the people around us?

1:45 AM
I decided to create one myself :)

Cas
@GeorgeEdison lol nice

2:04 AM
There is apparently another user in Vienna, VA other than myself

well, AU is super popular in Europe
kind of disheartening to see the huge voids on the map in the US
and interesting that theres zero involvement from asia

AU has been blacklisted from Asia!!!
they don't like the freedom of choice, that Ubuntu or Linux in general offers

@TheX seriously?

@lazyPower I have no idea :P

i was wondering ;) I've heard that asia has some super restrictive blacklisting on DNS, but thats a little out-there.

2:20 AM
@lazyPower I forgot to use my sarcasm tag again :P

i forgot i had my gullible hat on today

lol

Where did all the Canadians come from!?!?

Canada?

I know... but there's so many of them.

I get the distinct feeling its going to be a late night....
@GeorgeEdison thank you for turning me on to qtcreator. Its become one of my favorite IDE's. it really just gets out of your way... and i can use it everywhere. I even have a portable install, granted that runs slow as molasses, but it works in a pinch when i'm at school without my laptop.

@lazyPower No problem.
The code completion engine is awesome, isn't it?

oh yeah, i tab and ctrl-space most of my code post-prototyping.
I pulled it out today at work hacking away at my project during my lunch hour, and my co-worker got the "oooo aaahhh" effect. He said "that looks much nicer than Vis Studio, why cant VS be this clean?"
my response "This isnt the kitchen sink, its the sharpest knife in the drawer for C++ development"

3:04 AM
Glad to hear it's working out.

if you can edit a question, then you can kill tags :P

@htorque with fire?

nothing to do with my magic powers (which i do have - booyaka!)
@OctavianDamiean no, that one didn't deserve fire :P

on the other hand I'll have to invest more energy and time in starting to work on the Ubuntu One Android files/music client and another project I'm planing to get done before next UDS

Mysql expert here?
myphpadmin died an i was exporting my databases manually and when i try like this mysql -u username -p databasename > backup.sql
after inserting the password it stacked
any advice will be appreciated :)

9:17 AM
I'm not an expert but I know about mysqldump which should be what your are looking for

http://askubuntu.com/questions/41747/how-do-i-fix-f10-f11-and-f12

I still have no answer? :'(

@OctavianDamiean Hi, i was trying to export my databases manually

May 19 08:34:15 ip-10-122-226-160 ntpd[856]: synchronized to 208.53.158.34, stratum 2

11.04 with GNOME3 & LightDM http://bit.ly/m6xHdJ #gnome3

@Achu I just don't see how just logging into the mysql console would do that, the command mysqldump on the other hand does just that, exporting databases ;)

9:22 AM
@OctavianDamiean may i try? tell me the whole command

@Achu like I said I only know that this is the command which is meant to do what you want, I guess looking up the man page of that command or trying to google for an example will definitely help you

@OctavianDamiean okay thanks :)
@OctavianDamiean Actually i was trying mysqldump and the first code i posted it do the dumping part
this -> mysqldump -u [user] -p [database_name] > [backupfile].dump

Q: Natty's Banshee often freezes and is working very slow

tvnBanshee is working on my PC very slow. My pc should have enough power (2x3Ghz, 4GB-Ram, 7GB-Swap, 1GB-Graphics, 32bit Ubuntu) but the switching between playlists is working very low. Additionally if I'm starting a greater job (e.g. importing a dir with >200 files) banshee just freezes. Anythink ...

too bad it doesn't smile :)

it did help a bit that i did some selective tag fixing this morning >:P
@AdrianaVillafañe is it afraid or just shy?

it's a cat-like stare, you can't tell.

it looks a little bit like my thinkpad nub :D

@htorque yea but with a face :)

how do you know my thinkpad nub has no face? :P

that is an awesome idea, such a Thinkpad nub with a smiley on it :D
@htorque it would be the first of its kind :p

10:05 AM
cool hat:

lol
I have a more advanced nub tho

Is it OK to use AskUbuntu as the official support site for an open source application?

26
A: Is it okay to use Stack Overflow as the support forum for a product or project?

Jeff AtwoodI think this idea of using Stack Overflow as an official support forum is inside-out : the community has to adopt the project, find it of interest, and talk about it on Stack Overflow. Pushing to one particular destination from inside the project feels like forcing a fit for the community rather...

that is at least for Stack Overflow, Ask Ubuntu might have another view on it

10:49 AM
> The latter of these, due to the developers first attempt at Debian packaging, will kick-up a minor fuss about being ‘badly packaged’ when installed through the Software Centre.
→ fix then publish :-P

11:21 AM
@OctavianDamiean It is the official support "forum" for Ubuntu-One

@MarcoCeppi oh I didn't know that it is official :)
well then

However, that's a bit of a special case - since it's actually an Ubuntu team which @JorgeCastro has been trying to organize support for all the teams to come and monitor their respective tags on AU

but ubuntu one is an integral part of ubuntu - unlike software xy

Right

@JamesGifford Yup! Theres even closed by Popular Demand, and merged by Popular Demand :p

@StefanoPalazzo hi \o
@MarcoCeppi nice to see u after many days :)

Morning all

@OctavianDamiean @lazyPower \o /o \o

o/ @KaustubhP

1:14 PM
quick question to the javascript dudes: is window.location.reload() cross–browser compatible and reliable?

I think you'll see some issues in older browsers, but it's a standard in like JS 1.3 and up
@StefanoPalazzo Actually - that should work in most all browsers. My mistake

@MarcoCeppi oh good :) Well I don't need to care about browsers that don't work anyway
I'm using a bunch of css3 (I think), and crazy things like "new Audio("ding.wav")"

Yeah, if you're going to be doing future-y stuff don't that will work in those browsers

@lazyPower how are u hangin?

@KaustubhP cant complain :) Staying busier than I ever planned on being.

1:22 PM
@StefanoPalazzo just don't try to support IE6!

Ooh don't worry. I won't

@OctavianDamiean Nobody in their right mind is trying to support a dead browser.

@lazyPower hehe, thats nice!

@StefanoPalazzo Don't support any IE, and make sure it uses the chrome HTML5 notification stuff like this chatroom please?

@lazyPower oh many companies still do! :D

1:23 PM
Sorry, hit enter on the wrong one. :P

I was about to say :P

@OctavianDamiean I know, we are one of them >.>

@JamesGifford I think notifications are quite easy. I'm still thinking about the best way to record "missed messages". Just implemented a full transcript

@OctavianDamiean notice i said "right mind", not "extreme availability minded companies"

:P has a case of the ID10T virus today
@StefanoPalazzo Sweet. Missed messages. . . hm.

1:24 PM
I guess I'll make missed messages link to themselves in the transcript, plus and minus 20 messages, and then have a link to the day's transcript
while keeping the transcript and the chat two separate pages

@StefanoPalazzo What DB engine are you using?

@MarcoCeppi none :) I'm using dictionaries (hash–tables), periodically backing them up to a json file. But I have a distributed hash–table somewhere that I can just drop in

Cas
2:03 PM
anyone have experience of gtk/pygtk?
got an annoyance with gedit plugin, i would like to fix

@Cas I know about pygtk (not gedit plugins though)

Cas
@StefanoPalazzo the search window is popping up on startup of gedit so I wonder how the windows can be loaded without it showing then hiding. i'll dpaste the code.
dpaste.com/544227 i think line 55
my gtk knowledge is hazy :)
i swear some of it is black magic at times :P

@Cas the windows will have a property "visible": True in the XML

Cas
haha thats it, thanks :D

no problem :)

2:15 PM
@StefanoPalazzo Interesting

@MarcoCeppi due to how the python dictionary protocol works, I can just drop in any key–value store by subclassing dict and overloading the appropriate operators. I'm implementing stars right now, and I'm seriously thinking of using a database at this point :)

How will that handle for indexing and memory management?
Interesting, I'm not familiar with Python Dictionary

@MarcoCeppi well, the garbage collector won't delete items in a dictionary anyway. Indexing is done by keeping a list of keys on the server side
class RemoteDict (object):

    def __getitem__(self, key):
        return json.load(urlopen(server + "/load", {'key': key}))

d = RemoteDict()
print d['my_table']
a bit like this

Q: New to the Lyunx game, need help

John SammsDear Sirs: I am currently trying to convert my newly purchased laptop to an OS that is similiar to Windows but without all of the other other headaches associated with it. I plan on using the laptop for surfing and business purposes only, since I have my Playstation for my gaming purposes. Can...

help!

Cas
@JorgeCastro err
i would almost be tempted to call that as spam

Oli
@JorgeCastro Argl. I don't know whether to edit, comment, answer, close or delete. Each has its merits.

@Oli maybe ... edit, "How do I get started?"
and then the answer is the intro page on ubuntu.com?

@JorgeCastro what do you think about getting the ubuntu power users use Ask Ubuntu as a Q/A platform?

Can I increase the size of root.disk
?
I have installed Ubuntu within windows 7

3:02 PM
will be back in a bit

@Pavitar I'm not sure if it's possible, but we have a question that deals with the subject
2
Q: How to increase wubi /root disk space

punithI'm running out of space in wubi. Online wubi help didn't help much since they suggest creating extra virtual disk space(similar to having a diffrent partition i guess) . None of them speak about increasing the size of /root disk space(or root.disk). I store all files in space shared with windows...

you could add a comment that you're having the same problem, and then suggest an edit to the question (edit link beneath it) that makes it more clear. That'll bump the question to the front page; maybe someone else knows more
you should also click the star next to the question to add it to your favourites

Oli
@JorgeCastro They seem to be oblivious to the fact Ubuntu is an operating system. Not the first time I've seen somebody on Ask Ubuntu that thought Ubuntu is just part of what the site is called. I've wumped an answer down now that should cover that and gently push them in the right direction.

3:19 PM
How to perform a rake task after startup? http://bit.ly/iUlF7Y #startup

@Stefano Palazzo - I have already asked a question.but haven't got a satisfying answer.So to bump it up I have offered Bounty..
2
Q: How do I give Ubuntu 10.10 more space (when installed inside Windows 7 (via wubi))?

PavitarI had installed Ubuntu inside Windows XP but then I formatted XP and installed Windows 7. EDIT1: I used Wubi for the same. I want to know which one of the two will solve my problem? creating a virtual disk or resizing root? Also is resizing root possible as the 4GB ext4 partition is already in ...

@Pavitar hidden in the second answer is a guide that should do what you want
did you try it? I know it's rather technical :\

Yes I did.
but didn't work
I mean,it didn't solve my problem..

@Pavitar if you try something and it doesn't work, please add a comment

however,I have created a virtual disk

3:22 PM
people might think that'll solve your problem and not bother answering

ok. I'll do that

In any case, you're doing the right things adding a bounty and promoting your question in the chat room.
keep in mind that editing your question puts it on the front page. The more effort you put in the question, the more effort people put in their answers

Thank you for the tips ;)

I'd rather help solve your problem, but you're welcome :)

lol ..

3:28 PM
add that you tried it in your question!
that bumps it

ok

also you might want to chill out on the bold, the question is hard to read

ok,I'll change that as well.I always tend to bold some part of the text coz I feel it puts forth the important points across
really well
@Jorge Castro - Yep ,done.
I'm off now.Thank you for your tips guys :)

Q: How do I install the Unity 2D desktop?

Jorge CastroI read that there is now a 2D version of Unity built on Qt. How do I install it?

can I get some upvotes for the 11.04 answer please?

Oli
@JorgeCastro Sure but why don't you just change the accepted answer if you want it higher?

@Oli .... duh ....
haha, thanks for the tip

Cas
lol

4:05 PM
oh noes
> One thing the badge doesn’t say, is that there must be at least 200 questions in all 40 of the top tags before this badge is awarded to anyone. ... I don’t feel you can accurately measure a generalist until the top tag list settles down.
we are only at 154

Oli
@htorque Only 8 of the top 40 tags are under 200 Qs
And going on the rates, they should all be 200+ in a month.

yeah, but in a month my tags could be out of the top 40 :D

Oli
Hmm might take a little longer.
Aaaah
My bad =)

i'll just ask 295 questions during the weekend :P
@oli shouldn't you reach 50*200+ rep soon?

4:14 PM
woah, I missed @Rinzwind making the one millionth chat post
pretty cool

@Oli no, i meant the Epic badge

Oli
Ha
Only 30 days so far.
I'm only 20% legendary :(

;)

Oli
Haven't had enough time to really grind the site recently

I only have 16 days

Oli
4:20 PM
That's what it takes. You have to be on almost solidly answering everything you can. And it works better if you sustain the effort over a few days because people still vote for old posts. You end up starting the day with a nice little bonus of ~50-100 points from the overnight votes.

yeah, I get tons when I update an old answer too

Wow.
Just wow.
I'm looking through some statistics on my web site.
I have a hard time figuring out why '/stack2rss/unix.stackexchange/questions/unanswered' has been accessed 269160 times this month...

@GeorgeEdison haha wow.

Maybe this explains it: benjaminlog.com/149
(Hint, you'll need to translate it.)

@GeorgeEdison that's just about once every 10 seconds

I need to do something about that.

maybe it's a bunch of people refreshing every x minutes

5:31 PM
It's got my CPU usage at 10%.

@GeorgeEdison That'd do it.

@StefanoPalazzo I'm trying to get the User Agent to see exactly what it is that's making the requests.

Cas
lol i just got the Strunk & White badge

cool, you don't even have edit rights, right?

Cas
quite, i keep the mods busy :P
