They don't have any persistent state on the server, so they store it in their last signature message (the posts they've made in here), and they find those by searching for their own posts.

but search results are cached, and it's possible for the bot server to be restarted twice during the cache interval, causing it to miss its latest post and re-do it.

I think that the user post history isn't cached (at least not as aggressively), so looking there first (instead of using the search) should prevent this from happening, but I haven't had a chance to do that yet.

Now that I've seen them working I've dialed back their spamming frequency to a couple of messages a week, so they won't be flooding the room.
