lists are built upon arrays so

An array is something that manages variables especially those of the same type. Sometimes i found it impossible to make PONG!!!! without the need for an array. Like a lists within an array hold values.

first, we declare int myArray[4], which says "we want myArray to refer to an array of 4 ints".

let's assume our ints are 32 bits

so it'll allocate 4 integers side by side (this is called contiguous memory, where all the blocks are next to each other roughly speaking), so 32 bits is 4 bytes, so that's 4 * 4 bytes which is 16 bytes of memory in total

ok then, so the value that's left in myArray is the address of the first integer in the block. Since they're contiguous, we know that if increase the address by 4 bytes, we'll be at the next integer

so by knowing where the first one is, we can work out where the second one is by adding 4 essentially, and the third by adding 4 again ...

ok then, so in order to refer to the nth integer, we need to do the first address + (size of type * element number)

so the size of type is 4 bytes here

so that might be first address + (4 * n) where n is the element we want

this is why arrays are typically 0 index'd

because if we do 4 * 0 we just end up with the first one

Well this gave me something to think about

so when we say myArray[2] = 4; we're saying take the address of myArray and add (4 * 2) to it, because 4 is the size of an int, and then store 4 in there

you can write this literally in C with pointer arithmetic, but that's beyond this lesson :D
