Hello. I am a noob here. So, before asking a question in the main site, I wanted to ask it here.

How much memory (approximately) would be occupied in a brain in order to learn a language fluently?

I just wanted to learn and/or confirm the answers on this question.

I am really not an expert on this field (@AliceD might know better), but as far as I know there is no upper limit, as our brain is not a harddisk. It works by making more connections between neurons, but how this process works in details is not understood, as far as I know.

@Dawny33 as @Chris said, the brain is not hard disk. Further, what kind of units are you after? #neurons? mm2 surface of the cortex? MBs? ...

9:36 AM
@AliceD I really don't know how memory would be measured in the brain. :(

We store it in MB's, so I pre-assumed that unit of storage.

It's hard to compare.

Ohh. I see.

But, is there even a theoretic upper bound for the memory a normal human brain can accumulate?

Is unobtainium obtainable?
Has there been any study on - Are people with profile pictures of photos playing guitar are considered more sexually desirable than who don't?
I find it ridiculous when people who are just good enough to entertain people with bad taste of music starting posing as accomplished musicians.

@Resonating @fileunderwater I like that they went to all that effort with the pebbles and then just used the word "nest".
@kuitykita I think that study was called "The sixties".

1:14 PM
@kuitykita In my defense, I have been playing for more than 20 years, have done live gigs and everything and have even been paid as a composer for the music of a TV series. Plus, I find the picture pretty.
As for being sexy, there's not much point in that on SE now, is there? Unless you think there's a secret chat room for cyber sex.
@kuitykita And how do you presume to judge the competence of someone based on a profile pick? For all you know, everyone with an instrument in their avatar is a virtuoso.

1:34 PM
Whoa. Didnt see that coming
Was that a 60s TV series?

No, circa 2009 or so. And no, you wouldn't have seen it unless you were living in Catalonia at the time :)

Continuing my theme of great research figures/illustrations:
Schlichting. 1958. The role of waterfowl in the dispersal of algae.
The caption reads as poetry.

So you are from Greece terdon. Could you answer this when you have time - How can a biologist get started with computational bioogy?

@kuitykita Personally, I finished my degree in biology and then did a PhD in bioinformatics. Are you a student?
@fileunderwater WTF?

@terdon There is more:

Please tell me that was published in AIR.

yes, i started my MS recently in plant science. I plan to find admisssion in Bioinformtics program as well. How do you think I should prepare?

I think the aim was to study to what extent ducks are dispersing algae (fragments, spores) between ponds. Its from a thesis.

2:00 PM
Will some foundation linear algebra help later?

@kuitykita It depends on what you want to do. Computational biology is not necessarily math-heavy.
If your MS course offers any bioinformatics classes, take them. Also learn a scripting language like perl or python. Some experience with Linux/Unix will also be necessary.

I am taking some courses on python in coursera.. i didnt know but I actually happen to love programming. I am also learning R for some time.. I have been hearing about perl a lot. Will learning perl be more useful or is it better to focus on one programming language at a time?

3:44 PM
@kuitykita It's probably easier to learn one at a time. As for better, it depends. Some people only know Perl (myself, for example) others only know Python and some know both. Either one is fine.
There are some projects that need one or the other but you can deal with that if and when it becomes relevant. If you learn one scripting language, it is relatively easy to learn another.
R will come in handy as well.

@terdon Thanks. I will be in touch with you for advise. I hope you dont mind being bothered time to time

No problem. Just don't diss my guitar skillz :)

No, I didn't mean to. it was some other profiles in facebook. I am a musician myself as well (not paid btw). I just get really annoyed sometimes.
Actually I was paid.. I was paid once or twice,, But that is irrelevant now.. I think I am describing unneccessary details.. Ok.. this is the end of conversation for me.

Does anyone know what an 'anti protein' is?
I'm hoping for -gen but I'm not sure and it's extremely hard to google for on account of nutrition
