5:00 AM
hello...
anybody available?

3 hours later…
7:35 AM
@medica My experiences from the medical training in two countries are different: The first years are mostly theory based and done by professors and lecturers from the med school. These are more or less all persons with medical training
Regarding the "arrogance": I had this problem with a number of other profs, too. Giving anecdotal evidence without relevance or reference is something where I had discussions with my biochemistry profs as well.
Jim Watson is a complete different person - this guy is nuts.
@TAbraham It's a bit hard to chat with you. You ask questions, don't react to questions about it...

I think we can all draw upon experiences of arrogant professors and ignorant medical professionals (ignorant of advances in science, and the research behind much of what they do), but it is not fair to paint either side as all being arrogant or all being ignorant.

9:58 AM
Jupp...good point to end this. :-)

10:38 AM
@TAbraham - given how fruitless my efforts to help you were the first time I'm not going to bother engaging in what will likely be a waste of my time, sorry if this offends you - it's not how it's meant to come across, just think it's better to say why I won't respond rather than just ignoring completely

@medica It has been 9 years since I passed out high schools and it was the notions of that time that I am talking about. Moreover education system is not universal. My father is a doctor and my motivation of studying biology came from reading some of the medical journals that my dad had. But that notion was based on my experience then. Yes I have not been to the school that you have been to and therefore my experiences are bound to differ.
Plus I also met doctors who are really good at mathematics too. You have 33k rep in EL&U; did you not pay attention to the tense in the sentence "I had this notion" which is in no way equivalent to "I think" ?
@medica "I wonder do med school professors have a habit of providing unreferenced notes...!!" This was not meant to be serious.

*typo: high school; in the previous message*
On "running for mod": I am not running for president and my personal opinions in general should not matter. Nonetheless I assure that there is no bias that I have.
At least bias related to the name of the degree that people have. Having said that I would add that I am not unbiased towards everything and nobody is so.

5:48 PM
anyone around ?

1 hour later…
6:51 PM
yupp...now again

what do you mean?
well it surely seems you guys are not responding....

7:06 PM
@TAbraham When we are looking in here one hour apart, this will happen

but I don't know what you ean by your previous message...
what's wrong w/ what I post?

8:02 PM
@Chris sorry to annoy u but had some questions... will try to give as much detail as possible...

8:19 PM
What questions?

8:32 PM
hello... sorry I had to go bcos I thought you weren't there...
r u available?

Yes, I am here. But I am not constantly giving status messages.

ok.. my question is if we use Fabs to inactivate viruses, what happens to the virus-fab complex?

What do you mean with fabs?
Fab-Fragments of antibodies?
And why should you use them instead of complete antibodies?

yes..
well.. this is because I am trying not to use chimeric antibodies so Fabs won't usually cause a HAMA immune response, if I read correctly...

The Fc part of the antibody is important for the recognition through the immune system
If it would be that easy, people wouldn't do the hassle with chimerizing antibodies
fab-fragments will (if at all) only cause a very small ummune response, while full antibody-virus complexes will be taken up by phagocytes with subsequent full acitivation of the immune system

8:50 PM
what about iimunotoxins?

Can you be more specific?

i read about immunotoxins, in which toxins are attached to fabs so that when fabs are attached to the pathogen, the toxin kills it...

are viruses alive?
Can they be killed?

oh... i didn't think about this...
so it won't work?
gota go
thnx 4 the help!

For viruses: No. For living cells: probably when there is no crossreactivity and the cell internalizes the complex

8:56 PM
but on wiki it says "few viral infections"

9:48 PM
Hello Chris...

10:19 PM
@Chris did you see what I said?

10:32 PM
Wikipedia usually cites references for their claims. If there is none, forget it.
