@ZachSaucier If you wanted to decline, why didn't you edit that in, rather than removing the nomination?

Q: get rebate by not using credit card

Thorsten StaerkI often buy stuff in owner-run businesses that accept credit cards. To get a rebate I want to offer them to pay cash, not by credit card, and ask them reduce the amount by the credit card charge. To be good in my negotiation I need to know what charges apply to American Express Visa Mastercard...

This needs off-topic close vites.
This question is off-topic on Lifehacks, since you're just looking for the charges made by various credit cards. That isn't a lifehack, and is just information. — Wipqozn 1 min ago
@ZachSaucier I'm not surprised. It looked as if you stopped using the site the past few days.

@ZachSaucier You don't think the 20-ish people who upvoted would notice?
Ultimately it probably won't matter. It truly feels like this site is not going to work.

@Sterno Yeah, agreed. I don't think we'll reach the point that SE will assign Beta Mods

@ZachSaucier Really, you should undelete the answer, and just state that you decline.

Whoa. This question is +10/-10. Some people have strong opinions about this one. — Shokhet 21 secs ago

yep

@Shokhet R-rated topics should be OT here, IMO

@Mooseman Then vote on the meta post.

At first I thought it was a joke question like the one about hiding bodies. I didn't vote on it, but I could see people downvoting based on that assumption. meta.lifehacks.stackexchange.com/questions/1326/…

A: Is sex a taboo subject in Lifehacks?

MoosemanAnything R-rated is off-topic I think this falls under "Be nice". Why should we be okay with trying to offend people? One bad apple spoils the bunch. If this type of question becomes commonplace (even if uncommon), there are many users (including myself, to be honest) that will leave the site.

@Mooseman

"If this type of question becomes commonplace (even if uncommon)" How can it be both uncommon and common place?

@apaul34208 Disconnect in wording. Fixed. "...becomes accepted (even if uncommon)"

Additionally, if we end up having a [sex] tag or some other tag that some people are uncomfortable with, they can choose to ignore it by editing their "favorite tags" on the homepage. — Shokhet Jan 1 at 19:55

@Shokhet I understand that, but they will still be seen by active users in queues, etc.

5:18 PM
@Mooseman I see.
@apaul34208 FYI, if you paste the link into chat, the comment will print by itself, with a link to the comment in situ. Like this:

@Mooseman I doubt it will become that common/accepted... As long as the questions aren't malicious or deliberately crude I don't have a problem with them.

(the link is in the timestamp)

@Shokhet thanks, I've been on SE for a while, but I just started chatting recently.

@apaul34208 No problem. Also FYI, if you want to respond to a specific comment, you can click on the bent arrow at the end of the message. This makes conversations easier to follow.

@Shokhet Thanks again, I'll take a look at the help page and get better acquainted.

5:30 PM
@apaul34208 Okay. Welcome to chat! :)

@Shokhet That reminds me... The whole reason I started chatting was that it seems like there's more discussion and decisions being made in chat than on the Meta site. It would probably be good to move some of these discussions there.

@apaul34208 I agree. My medical question, for example, started in chat, but I deliberately moved it to Meta for that reason. Site policy decisions belong on Meta, because it's easier to reach consensus that way, besides for the fact that it's just so much more accessible.
....do you think there's information that can be found here, now, that isn't on Meta yet?

@Shokhet Probably not worth digging through, but stuff like the scope discussion that Gilles brought up... I think he added his point of view to Meta already.
@Shokhet The main reason I would like to see more meta discourse is that it is more inclusive and the record sticks around, so it can be easily referenced later.

It's fine to use chat to discuss site policy, you just need to make sure you get stuff to meta too.
Chat can be a lot better for discussing policy than meta is. That's one of the reasons you'll get a prompt now if two users go back and forth in comments for a while.

@Wipqozn If more of the discussion happens on Meta there's a good chance that more users will get involved.
@Wipqozn Perhaps discussion isn't the best word...

5:45 PM
@Wipqozn For discussion, of course....but stuff has to get to Meta eventually, and Meta is a good place for discussion also

@apaul34208 Sure, but but I'm not suggesting we do it all on chat or all on meta.
Look at the sex taboo question. If mooseman and zach both argued about it in here a lot, then we'd still make a meta about it and they could (and should) have both mad the psots they did.
It's just that after discussing it they may have fleshed out their views more, and would have posted an even stronger initial post then if they just went straight to meta.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that chat is a great place for fleshing out your ideas/views/stance/ before going to meta with them.

@Wipqozn I agree. But @apaul34208 is also right that chat shouldn't be the end of the discussion -- Meta is also important because it's easier to find stuff, and it's also a lot more accessible.

@Shokhet Yeah, I wasn't suggesting chat should ever be the end of a discussion.
We should never, ever have site policy decided on in chat and only featured in chat.

@Wipqozn I never thought you did.

@Shokhet Just making sure :)

5:50 PM
That's true, but I think some ideas get shot down in chat that would be valuable on meta. Even a bad idea is worth making note of, if for nothing else than a sort of "ya, we thought about that and it didn't work because..."

@apaul34208 A lot of people are scared of downvotes. For example, I think a lot of people might have deleted this answer, but I decided to keep it because it's a record that the community considered and rejected the idea.

@apaul34208 Nothing wrong posting an idea brought up and shot down in chat to meta as well. Not so much because it documents that we discussed this, but so other users can weigh in.

....that's odd. That answer got an upvote since I last checked on it.

@Shokhet You should never, ever delete meta posts. Well, not never, but rarely.

@Wipqozn I know that, and you know that, but the people who always want all their posts to only have positive score might not know that.

5:53 PM
There's a user on Arqade who deletes her posts whenever they get downvoted, including on meta, it's really annoying. It results in people not seeing the full picture, which isn't helpful.
@Shokhet mhm

@Wipqozn Tell her that there is no such things as rep ("fake internet points") on Meta

@Shokhet She knows.

@Wipqozn ....I wonder if mods/high rep users can undelete the really important ones.

Anyways, point is: don't be afraid of meta, downvotes or not. It's a rad place.

@Shokhet Mods and 20k+ users can delete/undelete anything, provided it's not locked.
well, not comments, but comments don't count.
Only mods can delete comments.

Gotta get ready for work, I'll probably be back on later tonight.

5:56 PM
@Wipqozn I haven't hit 20K (or 4K, on Beta) yet, so I haven't tried :P
@apaul34208 See ya!

@Shokhet Being trusted user is a glorious thing. So much power. Glorious, delicious power.

@Wipqozn Working on it :)

@Shokhet good, good, because deleting things is so much fun.
Delete feature is best feature

@Wipqozn I can't see deleted things anywhere. I was able to for a couple of days on LH private beta, where 1K=10K ....but no more.

@Shokhet Yeah, I miss being able to close vote things.
I only have on answer on the site, so I haven't hit 500 rep yet.

5:59 PM
I see. It shouldn't be too hard to get there.

Most of my contribution has been discussing site policy.

Jaydles is almost 1K, from one Q/A set (that hit HNQ)
@Wipqozn That's good stuff also, and much appreciated.

@Mooseman This si clogging up comments, but I still don't understand why you're asking me that. My statement comment makes nothing about numbers or anything like that. What I'm saying is that asking a question which offends someone does not mean you're trying to offfend someone.
Trying to offend would mean you're asking with the intent to cause offense, but just asking a question about sex (offensive or not) doesn't mean you intend to offend people by asking.

@Wipqozn I still hold that it violates "be nice"

Q: Should a "There are no hacks" answer be flagged for deletion?

James WebsterOne of my questions garnered a "there are no hacks" answer and posted links to existing products. As explained here, "No" is a valid answer. However, since they answered, other users have posted valid, working hacks making that answer outright wrong. What should I do? Nothing? Comment and...

@Shokhet Hi! Just curious-what's that medical question you asked? I'm following this discussion re the controversial question on LH. My two cents is that it should be off-topic, and that tag shouldn't exist. I didn't read it cuz I didn't want to add to its views.
Read it now tho to try to be objective. I get that it's about cleaning, but should still be closed. Again, just my 2 cents, and this comment isn't directed to you personally, to all who've been chatting about it. Gonna check out the discussion on Meta. Hope you're having a good day!

Sue
@J.Musser Good evening sir!
Are you struggling over that question, and the topic in general?
I didn't like seeing it, but don't want to insult you and those who are working so hard on LH!
@apaul34208 I just want to welcome you to chat too. People here have made my SE experience much easier, plus they're friendly and fun to hang out with!

@Sue linky?

Hi @Sue. The "medical question" I referred to was the Meta one; found here.

Sue
@J.Musser See, I did the one box thing you taught me!

"Stains made of semen"

Sue
@Shokhet hmmm, Interesting question.

@Sue I think there's an even more interesting answer to that question :P
....the original plan was to have two answers on both sides, and voting to represent what people thought
Robert Cartaino deleted both answers (see comments), and Shog posted a good answer to the question

Sue
@Shokhet You mean Shog's full answer, rather than the comments? There's some history stuff I can't see in Safari. It looks like a well thought out discussion.

11:43 PM
@Sue I personally don't like that type, but that's not grounds for closure. It seems the community doesn't mind (based on meta votes), so there ya go.

@Sue I meant the answer, that's right.
I have to go now; see y'all later!

cya

Sue
@Shokhet Nice seeing you! Bye.
@J.Musser Makes sense. That's what the community's for. When I saw it originally, I chose not to read it, which is what we should all do. I think you scope-designers have a harder job.
I didn't mean we should choose not to read it, but that we should each make our own choice!
As for the tag, I agree with @Mooseman, but that's just my opinion.
There's also another question I keep coming across, on Meta I think, the title of which is fk, fk, f**k. It wasn't closed I think because the discussion is interesting, but I think the title violates the Be Nice or some other rule.
Then again, you may be tired of this whole thing and prefer to talk about Clementines:)
@J.Musser Did you know a mourning dove can store 17,200 bluegrass seeds in a part of its esophagus to eat later? One of my fave bird facts!
