1:04 AM
Chat has been dead today

Jon
i posted that this morning

Pip
@SpartanDonut yes

Jon
I posted that exact video this morning
it is mind boggling

Pip
@Wardy nice

@Jon Totally missed it xD
Awesome though

Jon
1:30 AM
awesome until you realize it is fucken ridiculous
no man would be able to pull that gameplay off

1:41 AM
lol no

Pip
ofc not

THE yellow turtle shell bit was my favorite part
You're just sitting there the whole time wondering what the purpose of it it's going to be and it's just for one last tiny little hop that you would otherwise be doomed without

Jon
2:09 AM

wazzat

Jon
a photograph
of some trees in a sand dune somewhere

holy shit upon closer inspection I believe you

awesome

Jon
2:13 AM
yes... this is quite the photo
i am inspired

I think NatGeo's photo of the day will replace my current lack of a home page

Jon
i set that as my wallpaper, heh

Pip
nice

Jon
the entire slideshow on that site is sick really
which you should spend time and go through
anyways, bedtime for me

2:17 AM
Already on it lol

Pip
night

later dood

@SpartanDonut yeah that was really the best bit

Makes ya grin a little
Oooh I like how this kind of web site works: demo.paper-leaf.com/alton/standard

@SpartanDonut you there?

3:18 AM
So ASP.NET 5 officially sounds amazing on paper

kids won't even know what that means
"on paper"
hahaha

oh god haha

3:52 AM
Man I really need a project but nothing motivates me

wanna join Mick and me in getting C++ and C# to play nice together?
they really don't like each other, especially on Windows

That requires me to care about C++ and I just don't lol

actually nvm I just gave up

But that's the problem. I don't care about much
haha xD

there's always project euler. the problems are boring, but progression is mildly addicting.
it's like runescape all over again, shitty graphics included

3:55 AM
could be interesting

@IcyDefiance hahaha

I could pursue gamejam site again. Just realized no one has tried to coordinate the winter one... think we missed our window here

pfft there's still snow outside
too much snow

too much wind
snow is fine

no it should never get colder than 60 F

4:02 AM
You live in the wrong state
I'm still pretty comfortable in 10 F. I don't complain about 0-10 if the wind isn't blowing. Negative sucks.
I'd much prefer 60 F +

I'm comfortable in 10 F if I'm working hard. Like, harder than skiing.

But I've at least come to accept that I live in Wisconsin and have chosen to tolerate the weather accordingly

I'm not living in Michigan by choice...yet... :P

Fair enough lol

i like it when it's 45 and no wind

Joe
4:33 AM
Koji Igarashi says when working on castlevania they had a rule... the programmer who developed a boss was required to defeat their boss without taking any damage
6
lol if they couldnt that boss was nerfed

god I hate league sometimes. I worked my way back up to S3, and since then I've lost more LP from dodging than I've gained from winning, just because fucking everyone is a troll.

:(
I need to play a few games with you again

lol I actually got promoted 2 divisions at once, from S5 to S3, so that was cool
like, I finished the promo series to reach S4 and it put me in S3 instead
I just need a different game to play when I get pissed at league

:D
HotS would be good
I'm Rank 28 now (you start at 50)
really i should go sleep

still don't have a beta invite to that :(

4:48 AM
see you :)

3 hours later…
7:44 AM
I heard this the other day:
"Due to budget cuts, the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off".

3 hours later…

2 hours later…
1:01 PM
@Pip not bad huh

"Yeah, just check the details in a document on the school network that will totally be available to you and you definitely don't have to do stuff based to that document"

user92578
What's the thing with school staff and computers?

user92578
Lack of education?

1:49 PM
Why in the seven hells must updating the AIR SDK in Flash Builder be so goddamn difficult?

2:01 PM
because they wanted to add an eighth hell

Joe
good morning gdse

Jon
sup
i wanna make a game with a log of gibblets
Gibs, short for giblets (pronounced "jiblets"), is a humorous term referring to the variably-sized body parts ("guts"), fragments, and offal produced when non-player characters or game players are damaged or killed in video games. Adrian Carmack has been credited for coining the term "gibs". To "gib" one's opponents (pronounced "jib") is to hit them with such force (often with explosives) that they rupture. == Use in games == Gibs feature prominently in many shooter games where gameplay generally focuses on killing large numbers of enemies. One of the first games in which gibs appeared was Narc...

Joe
2:35 PM
how will you log your jibs? :D
"day fifty one - many unsuccessful rockets today, the amount of chunky meat parts was unsettling"

user92578
So will you guys kill me if my enemies kill you with one hit?

Joe
no seems fine... as long as its avoidable

user92578
definitely

Joe
try it out see if it makes sense to you

user92578
I just feel like because they are dumb, they need to be "strong"

Joe
2:40 PM
I would just consider the implications and test it out
if you make the very first enemies one shot kill, how do you make them more difficult
following that logic I'm assuming you have to make them smarter? and eventually your going to have really smart fast one shot killing enemies - and idk if that sounds fun at all lol

user92578
yeah, that doesn't sound good

user92578
I'm not sure how scalable my enemies need to be

Joe
were just speculating though I think go with your gut and try it out

user92578
maybe I'll then create enemies with bazookas and targeted missiles?

user92578
maybe faster bullet shooting ones?

user92578
2:43 PM
Well I'll see how the one shot kill ones work and make some decisions then

Joe
i think you need to try all of these things totally!

3:03 PM
I'm a fan of the Mario formula which is basically if you aren't powered up you die. If you are you lose your power up.

Joe
I like where your going with this

Jon

@Jon Seems rather obvious. To get early access.

^
or... what if you think what they have looks cool, and you think supporting the dev so they get to finish it is worth the risk

Jon
its funny because the old man has no idea what early access means

Joe
3:12 PM
@Almo I like the sound of this, but I feel like most consumers dont reason this much... "OOO SHINY GIME NAO!"

:)

@Jon I highly doubt that. :P
I'm pretty sure the joke is that CnH don't get early access :P
I might be wrong

user92578
In C++, what happens if I call a base-class constructor twice, first from an inherited class's constructor, and then from a constructor in a class that inherits from the inherited class?

user92578
nvm, I dont need to do that

3:29 PM
Today's Listening | Synthwave / Electronic / Instrumental

user92578
3:45 PM

user92578
It sucks, but how do I fix it?

user92578
where should he put his gun?

across his back diagonally
like it's strapped around him

^

Jon
up his butt would just be really weird
chest strap

user92578
3:57 PM
It's going to be annoying to add the diagonal gun thingy tough, as the gun is a separate instance from the player/enemy

user92578
so eventually I'd like the player to be able to pick up guns from dead enemies and maybe somesort of loot crates

user92578
and diagonal stuff in pixel art is... odd

user92578
But I'll see what I can do

It's not odd when it's scaled to that level :)

user92578
Turned out better than I thought:

user92578
4:01 PM

user92578
I need a godmode

That's what cheats are for :P

user92578
well that was easy, thanks to my nice and flexible console system!

user92578
/godmode [0/1]

user92578
that was like 9 lines of code to add the console feature and one line of code to ignore all incoming damage

user92578
4:14 PM
anyways I gotta leave for my bad rehearsal, and I'm not allowed to use the computer tomorrow, so I'll see you guys on thursday!

4:30 PM
@Tyyppi_77 cant you jut draw it normally then rotate it ?

4:50 PM
Then your pixels are diagonal
"pixels"

Well, kinda. :P It's buggy and generates sand from nothing at the moment.

@SpartanDonut THAT

But it's interesting when it runs on GPU, since it's much much faster than CPU alternatives.

pixelart games that rotate their pixels look dorky
I was honestly (pedantically) shocked when the Wall-E end credits made that mistake. Pixar of all people should fucking know better. :)

I think that depends.
If it's sort of how the game works it's fine.
Like Minecraft does :)

Joe
4:55 PM
@Almo i agree with this whole heartedly

I'm amazed. I've never heard anyone agree with me on this one :)

Joe
pixelart animations should be frame by frame... if your going to rotate... draw the rotation!
its also so much more ridiculously a pain in the butt to do than just rotate(33*)

yeah

It's pretty rare that pixel art looks good rotate though.

which is why you see it done wrong :)

4:56 PM
So it's a lot more work for a pixel artist.

Joe
I agree its one of the rare cases where the shortcut literally saves you 100x more work
its also a detail I dont think most people are capable of recognizing
how do you feel about lens flares @Almo lol

:)
Pixar goes to great lengths to make their movies look like they were filmed
with motion blur, etc
as such, it makes sense for them to use a lense flare
drop a Pixar film onto a 120 Hz MotionFlow TV, and BOOM looks like cheap video

5:23 PM
I'm pretty sure I saw 120Hz interpolation the other day for the first time ever. How bizarre looking

yeah it's weird
great for hoky
can see the fucking puck
horrible for movies
the ones I've seen drop frames when the scene changes enough. like on a cut from scene to scene
has to get the pipeline going again
that looks really fucking bad then
changing framerate during your movie

5:55 PM
is 4chan bombarding the site or why is there so many such bad questions in the past hour? :(

does anyone know how the unity sphere objects default set of verts and uv's are setup?

not me sorry

I made a new DJ mix, about two years since the last one lol
this one was a favour for a friend, he didn't want to boil his brains with crap music so I helped him out, it's for children's party where they try to find their prematched boy-girl pairs while ice skating
some tunes are finnish, but if someone's still interested here you go: lasse.pw/rusettiliukastelut.mp3

I accidentally set alt tab to close windows and it's really annoying

lol how did you manage that

6:06 PM
because I instinctivly alt tabbed to the solution page from the terminal
and I was looking at keyboard shortcuts
accidentally clicked one but didn't realise
then tried to alt tab out of it
turns out I just set close window to alt tab

hahahah

Fixed it now luckily :P
gsettings reset-recursive org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybinding
annoying that my keyboard doesn't have a left super key

I exclusively use the left one. How do you live?

I did beforehand too, and I'm struggling
especially since Fedora treats them as different keys under some circumstances
I have to press Super R + A to get the program search up
the keyboard layout is generally quite odd anyway
I'm emailed SteelSeries to say I've had enough of it and they're being very good about it
their first response was to offer a new keyboard with a more "normal" layout
I doubt I'll have the left windows key still, but I will have the other keys in standard positions at least

6:27 PM
I hate thinking up parallel programs for shaders. They're so much work.
I made the Game of Life work nicely.
And the floodfill+lighting for my game.
This moving pixel stuff is more difficult :P
Might just go with encoding position in the r/g channel and then move them around like that. But then looking up other pixels wont be O(1).
I guess I could just look at the output ...
That might work nicely.
I'll give it a try

Are you having a conversation with yourself again? :P

xD

Just putting my thoughts out there :P
You should see me on RPG.SE :P

ahaha
somehow saying it helps

monologues are the best, I used to have them too

@William'MindWorX'Mariager you should make a MindWorx.SE :P

I think it forces you to put your idea into words, which might fill out some blanks you didn't have in your head.

possibly

anyone here know how to translate math in to c# ?

6:33 PM
Depends on the problem.
If you need to solve for a single variable, it's pretty simple.
If you need to solve for more, like x/y with two lines, it's more work. :)

my planet rendering currently uses a unity sphere and I need to build a similar mesh with similar uv's myself
But translating that to c# is where i would get stuck
I'm thinking I will generate quad based sections of the sphere
that way I can lod them / quadtree / whatever I want
the problem for me right now is figuring out how I would uv map either a portion of the texture or potentially I could just gen a smaller part of the spherical texture
either way its the uv mapping of a sphere i'm a little confused by

Joe
7:11 PM
@Lasse I was thinking actually about starting... working solo on a project I wonder if things get lost if no one says them out loud :/

things probably get lost often because of that

InfoPath is the best! (not)
Saying things out loud is a great way to think
I make my wife listen to silly ideas she gives zero shits about just so I can think through it. She occasionally talks back.

@SpartanDonut we have a saying at work
talk to scott

I like it

He's basically one of the devs over at microsoft, I often find myself ranting at a picture of him on my desk
the rant then resolves the problem as I realise the problem half way through the rant
the up side ... no one gets pissed off because you ranted at them
but someone from microsoft got shouted at because .Net wasn't doing what i meant not what i wrote
so its all good

7:17 PM
I need to get a rubber duck on my desk, and give it a name Steve

The pic i have is of scott hansleman ... he's one of the mvc dev team i believe ... works mostly on the azure stuff these days though
it definitely works though

TIL Python has optional type annotations.

oh crap i just realised i now have to fix my coord conversion code
i've been successfully avoiding that problem for so long

oh crap this "hot sauce" is actually hot this time
help me
lol
I didn't expect this, usually "hot sauce" means "kid's juice"

rofl
milk is your best friend
go now and get some

7:26 PM
I think I can manage without for now, it just surprised me

I highly recommend Hurricane Mash and Fusion Fire.
great flavor, fucking hot.

Pip
7:50 PM
lol

8:04 PM
hi @Ali.S
I got my first pass planet rendering working by the way

Is it okay to talk about meta stuff on here?

Managed to do some really peculiar things along the way though lol ...

Because I don't know how to react to a proposed edit that is nothing more than changing word choice
Like completely subjective and unimportant things

if you dont agree with edits reject them
some people on here are purists
everything has to be perfect for them

Pip
@Boreal ofc
@Boreal reject it if you want, it's no problem if it's subjective

8:07 PM
That's what I figured, I just wanted to make sure
Would you say it's normal to reject anything that, while not being detrimental, is trivial like that (aside from spelling/formatting fixes)?

Pip
Eh, I've made some small edits before
Anything that truely improves the question/answer is fine imo

I just feel like if someone were to ask a question and have their word choices messed around with they wouldn't appreciate that

that's a fair point

But then again it's a wiki, not a forum

Pip
Yep

8:12 PM
if it's an improvement and doesn't change the original meaning, I'd say keep it

I guess I'm just anxious of being handed a tricky edit like that for an audit :P

aha

Pip
:D

8:26 PM
Hmm, what's the definition of a type?
Noun: data type (plural data types)
  1. (computing) a classification or category of various types of data, that states the possible values that can be taken, how they are stored, and what range of operations are allowed on them
why thank you wiktionary
if someone can make a bot that does stuff like that I'd be like wowz
> Hmm, what's the definition of a type?
> Bot answers
I'll stop talking to myself now.

8:39 PM
that would be cool actually

quite difficult though
but when have programmers ever been scared by such things? :P
I mean, I'm sat here making a damn language
Turns out D has some of the things I wanted

What kind of things?

easier meta programming of types through static if statements
I don't call mine static if, but they're the same thing

Sounds interesting.

6
Q: Why use static if in D?

coredumpI have been reading about the template system in the D language and came upon a unusual construct, static if. From what I managed to grasp it is evaluated at compile time, but from what I have searched, the example shown here did not quite enlighten me. template Factorial(ulong n) { static...

@Lokkij there's an example in there

8:50 PM
Hmm, pretty cool.

@Wardy feels nice, mostly the first one :D
