it widely accepted to get "good" at something (one thing) you have to do it for 10,000 hours
for most people thats about 5 years at a 40 hour a week job

oh okay
then 10 years

Joe
i would totally try all of those things

Well then good bye days of chatting cya

Joe
and pursue the ones you really like
haha totally

i like all of them :(

Joe
12:02 AM
depends if you want to be OK at alot of things but "master" of none of them
i would strongly reccomend at least "mastering" a thing
and still do the rest

i'll be happy as ok for all of them except Java/C++ developer
That i shall master
Thank you Joe For your wise words
Cya

Joe
no problem man
work hard and you will master all of those things you want to

12:25 AM
I'm not sure if the 10k hours thing is "widely accepted" so much as "a famous quote that kinda sounds about right"
gets the point across though

Hi All

hey icy
you in for a game in maybe 15 20 min?

@Almo Hey telll Icy how to load up his gme. pls.

sure
technology has been liking me so far today, so I don't think I'll lag again XD

Ooo we on about LoL?

12:33 AM
my starbound server isn't even leaking memory right now
no idea what fixed it. I didn't change anything...

@IcyDefiance 32 bit version maybe?

nope, gave up on the 32-bit version. one of the installation steps, compiling some gcc crap, just went into an infinite loop on 32-bit. no idea why.
since I was just following instructions and didn't understand that part anyway, I don't know how to work around it
so it's still running on 64-bit, because at least it works for a couple hours at a time XD

haha

but today, it's been running for 6 hours now and hasn't leaked anything

Madness

12:39 AM

12:53 AM
Hey guys

@OutlawLemur hey :)

How's it going?

Forward

oh today's programming music I found.

1:11 AM
@BlueBug Nice. I had to restrict/compress memory on my computer because Fx murders the frack out of it.

FX?

@BlueBug Fire Fox
Runnng my profiler right now

ah fire fox. Internet browsers now days eat a lot of memory. Yeah.

Yeah Fx consumes about 111.2kB of my hard drive every time I access a site or video or even a picture.

@IcyDefiance ok here

1:18 AM
I have 9.10GB left on my hard drive :/ Trying to figure a way of solving this problem.

aight

@MickLH ok I have table ln_completed_contests, with columns contestid and winningnumber. I have table ln_entries with columns userid, contestid, entry.
I want to get all the winning numbers for any contestid where there are entries for a given userid.
I'm not figuring out how to construct that query :(
I know I could do two queries, but that's just too noob and I can't bear to put it in the codebase.
going into lol game; will respond later if you get this in the next hour. :)

at least that will get the message to his inbox so he sees it later :)

3 hours later…
8:29 AM
good morning

Good morning!

8:41 AM
Anyone doing anything exciting?

no sports for the past 6 months, went bouldering yesterday. big mistake. even my hair is aching

Cool! Bouldering sounds like fun

it is! try it if you have the opportunity. I have yet to meet someone who didn't have fun

1 hour later…
9:51 AM
select userid contestid winningnumber
from in_completed_contests
join in_entries
on in_completed_contests .contestid = in_entries .contestid
something like that maybe
oh and ... morning all :)
This week will be fun for me ... stacking noise functions is the order of the week ... i'm generating voxel planets :)
finally the engine is ready (ish) to handle it !!

got something to look at already?
@Wardy

not yet ... at leat nothing impressive
I only started gathering the bits i need together last night
I also have a ton of notes from discussion and research i've done on this
and a basic model of what i plan to achieve
but this isn't going to be easy :(
hoping @Ascendion will give me a nice smooth mesh gen soon :)

do it now, i'm about to smoke a big fat blunt
lol j/k

is your code in c# or you using c++ like all the insane game devs ?

Jon
11:02 AM
c#
although I probably shoulda restart everything in c++
j/k again

lol

Jon
I was thinking, you want to generate chunks on the fly right?
Iv'e done on the fly chunk loading with accidental noise, but it was a watered down version of what I am doing now in order to speed it up
And it also required a dual core +
if not multithreaded, it was shit.
So if you are doing on the fly 3D, a custom simplex noise is probably better

user92578
This site has it's code areas centered: swiftless.com/tutorials/glsl/7_texturing.html

"code centered development" sounds like it go viral

@Tyyppi_77 mother of god, that's horrible
@Christoph don't give them antyideas

Jon
11:19 AM
right aligned code would be just as horrible

Not quite as horrible, I think

not in a right-to-left language

THAT would be horrible

OK I changed my background from white to a light gray and some bugs disappeared immediately!

11:23 AM
@Tyyppi_77 layers of abstraction!
@Christoph hahaha

Jon
if you set it to dark gray, your code will improve even further.

user92578
@OMGtechy It's not that much of work, I have decoupled rendering and game logic quite well

And if you set your text colour to green, you can hack things faster

wow that's magic, I had no idea man!

11:26 AM
@Jon yeh i currently have a custom simplex script but want to switch to a noise lib

unfortunately I can't load color settings in Code::Blocks

Jon
@Wardy for caves, or anything in particular?\

i would rather just stack modules together than have to build all that code myself
for the entire planet @Jon

Jon
ah... well yeah then.
How have you been doing with LibNoise?

im gonna use LOD settings to determine my sample distances
I haven't really got in to it yet @Jon

Jon
11:27 AM
LibNoise is probably better for you
Accidental Noise is not very good for on the fly generation

user92578
How do I nicely render a 2D textured Quad with varying texture coordinates and a varying position? Static position VAO + dynamic texture coord buffer + uniform value for position offset?

yeh i figured this should be my start point ...

Jon
yeah

since essentially all im doing is that with varying LOD

Jon
this only renders a surface though

11:28 AM
and chunk based "sub range selection" when closer in to the volume

Jon
if you are gonna go down to voxel level, you have a lot more to do than that :)

yeh when i get to the surface i switch to a 3d generator

Jon
if spherical.. you will probably need a 4D

12 D bitches

4D !!!
eh ... there are only 3 dimensions ...whats the 4th for ?

meh
you and your age old c syntax

Would you be appreciative of float D[ std::numeric_limits<unsigned int>::max() ]?

static_cast<unsigned int>(-1)
Or event better, use template metaprogramming to give you a random value (by random I mean you can't work it out)
D[WTF::value]

user92578
11:34 AM
How do I convert a pixel-coordinate rectangle that's the area of a texture I want to render to OpenGL supported texture coordinates?

user92578
NVM, I'll do that in load-stage

@Tyyppi_77 normalise to the range 0 - 1 ?

^

Jon
@Wardy yeah i've never done 3D noise.. Just thinking about me having to use 3D noise to be able to have a wrapping world

user92578
Doesn't work, since 0.0, 1.0 == topleft

11:35 AM
@Jon fancy having a go ?

Jon
I just assumed the same technique is used to generate tileable 3D worlds as well

essentially yeh

Jon
But I guess you could do it with just 3D noise

libNoise has a spherical noise renderer built in

Jon
I had an article that explained it, but I can't find it
ah cool

11:36 AM
utils::NoiseMapBuilderSphere heightMapBuilder;

Jon
ah, well that would do it
Then for the actual voxel data though
you might need that 4th plain, to get the data inside the planet to line up
so annoying...
Can't find that damned article

hmm

Jon
it was really good
it explained how to map to a 2D world on x-axis
Then on both axis.. then it moved on to 3D
i thought I had bookmarked it

@Tyyppi_77 it does, just apply a little more thought

Jon
I was considering doing something like this, in a shader
for "on the fly" chunk generations -- would greatly speed things up

GROUP BY lcc.contestid

@OMGtechy Huh, I've not really heard of people who want to become gay. Usually it's gay people who want to be heterosexual.

user92578
How do I create a (correct-name-here) matrix that will translate on-screen-pixel-positions into OpenGL vertex positions?

you can't get "position" unless you have 2d game. Instead, when you translate screen to world, you will get a line.
*gluUnProject does the magic for you.

user92578
I have a 2D game

@Tyyppi_77 presumably going from 2d to 3d requires a raycast
the other way is determined by multiplying world view and projections together

user92578
I need a way to translate my pixel-world positions into OpenGL positions

user92578
12:38 PM
So instead of (0,0), (16, 16) I need the positions OpenGL like

that depends on the view projection of your game
your camera is looking through a viewport of your "2d world" to see a subsection of it

user92578
Is there a built-in non-deprecated OpenGL function for the view projection?

there's likely some simple way to be able to say "if cam pos is x,y then its frustrum is x,y to x,y"

user92578
I should probably spend some time to actually do this properly instead of juts wrapping this quickly together, but it's not nice having a game with no rendering

user92578
But it might be better to have a game with no rendering than a game with really broken rendering

12:42 PM
@Tyyppi_77 it's all about patience
For people who aren't that good with graphics APIs, such as myself, it takes AGES to get anything good going
But you learn along the way, so it's worth it

@Tyyppi_77 maybe something like this might help ...

Q: How to transform 2D world to screen coordinates OpenGL

bgroenksI'm currently working on implementing an OpenGL powered renderer into a 2D game engine. Because the OpenGL screen coordinate space is [-1,1], I'm a little confused as to how it should be interfaced with a generic, Cartesian 2D world coordinate system. Let's say the viewport in my world is [-500...

user92578
I have twice done a 3D renderer

user92578
Once properly, once just quickly from a tutorial

Well, if you're asking questions you're still learning something regardless.
(I hope) :P

user92578
Yeah yeah

It's quite a sexy polygon.

@Tyyppi_77 how do you play this game ?

Jon
all hail the mighty purple polygon!

12:49 PM
or is this just a visual demo

user92578
I think that the purple polygon is the player, since it randomly moves when I press the player movement keys

its a very nice .... um ... desktop background ?

the purple polygon is truth.

user92578
No it's actually one of the enemies

It's robot jesus

I had it all working, except for a small function that SDL is missing. That function would save me from so much work... SDL_RendererSetTextureWrapMode(m_Renderer, SDL_TEXTURE_NOWRAP);

@Tyyppi_77 don't you set that on the sampler for your texture ?

user92578
Yeah, just that

user92578
And then, when SDL renders the texture, it would use that one

hmmm ... seems like an odd place to put that

user92578
Instead of bleeding textures

@Joe the quick and easy way to get PHP up and running is with the Web Platform Installer. It's basically a Wizard that allows you to set up the essentials for whatever it is you need like PHP, IIS Express, MySQL, and WebMatrix (MS's lightweight web development tool).

I'm seriously considering rolling back to SDL and taking the easier way out: extra 2px around every tile...

@Tyyppi_77 you need a clippy response about now ... I see you are tying to make a computer game, would you like some help with that ?

user92578
I see your trying to decide on rendering... I know in the long run it'd be cool to have OpenGL rendering, but it's so much work and I'm not sure if it's worth it

user92578
The fix for SDL isn't hard to do

Aren't you running into some subpixel problem?
I can't remember
I feel like it's just a math issue though... I know I've had some problems with it an Unity and snapping my camera to the nearest pixel and making sure my sprites were all vertex locked resolved the issue
But I believe there are some different calculations that can be done / have to be done when leveraging an orthographic camera... in Unity I think the camera size was of particular interest but I don't remember what all it dealt with

user92578
2:19 PM
@SpartanDonut Yeah, I had the problem where the pixels from the previous tile in the tilesheet would bleed to the wrong tile

Bleeding? Sounds like another issue altogether then
I don't know what the proper term is but it sounds like something I've resolved using "point" based filtering

user92578
What's that?

I think the alternatives were bilinear and trilinear or something... but I honestly can't remember what the setting was called
In this image for unity the "Filter Mode" has a point option

user92578
Ah, SDL doesn't allow the to change the filter mode

btw: "mySQL" is a dumb name. >:(

WHY?!?!

exactly !!!

Has anyone tried to do background rendering of 3D models here?

MLM
@Noctrine like wallpapers?

2:47 PM
@MLM Something like that, more specifically I want to render some character models.

MLM
I've done both: fav.me/d7brt5p - fav.me/d7hq118

@Noctrine uh yup
@Noctrine I background render chunks using deferred contexts on threads

@MLM Without any interaction with the design tools?

"procedurally generated models"

MLM
ahh, only in Unity. nvm

2:49 PM
procedurally modulated generals

but you're in unity right @Noctrine ?

Unity doesn't matter. I want to do this from my server.

this was one of the reasons I dropped it ... i didn't think it could do this
i still don't think it can

Before I was taking screenshots of the character and sending that to the server for processing. But that is unreliable.
If at all possible, I just want to generate the avatar on the server.

you want to do rendering on the server ?
evil
but doable

2:50 PM
EVE does that
well, it used to. maybe they're rendering on the client when you do your customization then uploading it...
ok, I'm not sure how the system works now ignore that :)

lol

I'm currently generating it on the client, and while it has benefits (like I can tell if people are hacking their client) - it also has big problems where they could hack their client and show some bad stuff to kids before it's caught.
