1:45 AM
HEY guys? i see that the steam summer sale has taken some victims
Anyhow if anyone could answer this later, does javascript have inline thing like C++ does? I been looking but so far it doesnt.... but maybe one of you guys know of new features that support that. (I dont really care about old browsers since its a HTML5 game so if they cant do that then they probably cant do canvas either)

@androidmaster can you link to what you mean in the C++ sense? I'm not sure what your'e talking about to help answer the question

2:27 AM
Anyone use the UnityVS add on?

2:45 AM
Man, I almost forgot how much job hunting sucked
almost

When you're experienced enough you'll have recruiters calling you

Hopefully. Right now I'm leaning more towards retail.
I don't think any tech company would hire me.

You're probably looking at freelance if you want to get into tech right now yeah

Even then it's hard. Freelancing online for a minor is hard. I'd have to get my parents to make an account and outsource all the work to me.
And I want to do that, I just have no idea what to specialize in. Web is probably the most popular, so maybe that.

I totally feel ya. The honest truth is freelance work you due would probably be "under the table" per say lol

2:50 AM
Yeah, with a cash pay and no formal contracts.
I'm fine with this.
The only problem would be finding places to do it for.
I could do it for people on craigslist or some shit.

Yeah freelance is hard at your age

So maybe not meant to be?

I honestly recommend getting a steady job and freelance on the side if you can swing it... when I was your age money > experience at that point so stead job wins out
If you feel experience > money then you can take "job time" hunting for freelance jobs
And charge accordingly

I know a kid who did freelancing stuff, just basic web stuff for small businesses in my area
Maybe he could hook me up with something

Yeah maybe he even has an overflow of work :P

3:00 AM
Outsource
= ca-ching

Difference between me and most people, I live in rural Wisconsin. Not many places to go try and freelance for
I can't get VS to attach to Unity D:<

Hehe, I live in what's technically a 'city' but it's really just a collection of small suburbs
Now that I think about it... there's two restaurants near me. Both are owned by immigrants and they're both strictly family run local businesses. Maybe they'd be interested.
I think it's just that I don't want a shitty job. Even money isn't necessarily that important to me, just money for gas and insurance and saving for school.
I like to code more than I like to make snowcones.
No matter how many pretty girls I get to see.
@SpartanDonut Real quick, I know you work with ASP.
Why do the header items slip downwards when I shorten the screen instead of moving in to the left?

MLM
@hasherr overflow probably
jsfiddle if you want to know for sure

@MLM Nope, oveflow: hidden didn't fix it.

MLM
@hasherr overflow won't fix it. At best it will hide it if you apply it to a parent of the nav items. Your elements are probably overflowing outside of the parent

3:14 AM
Oh, okay, so I need to apply oveflow to the parent as well (with the parent being the box?)
@MLM Okay, that worked.

@hasherr did you upload your current build?

No, I will in a sec

Also, F12 in your browser is your best friend
Odds are an element next to it is using the space to the left

Yeah, the first element has morgin-leftg set to 53%
It needs the space to seperate from the site title
But I'd like it so that when the screen size changes it just moves in towards the left
@SpartanDonut I messed it up
/logs/W3SVC1025
Where do I put my files?

uhhhh
You probably destroyed the web.config again?

3:22 AM
I just deleted everything.

I don't exactly have the capacity to troubleshoot that this weekend though :(
1 sec
there should be a folder at the root called wwwroot
create that folder and put your stuff in there
i created it actually
put stuff in there and see if that works

I uploaded the items, let's check

That was the best I had for as little attention as I can focus on it right now
Sorry buddy :(

cries
Why don't you love me!

Collaborating with a bunch of people right now in person

3:32 AM
It's cool, I'll just keep toying with it in vs

Sounds good
Good luck

Oh that sounds importnat. you should focus on that.
Thanks, same to you.

It's not important... its a bunch of nerds not knowing how to come up with concrete details that I can program from
Anyway, ask stuff in chat and I'll see about answering / trying to point you in the right direction

@SpartanDonut Thanks, but I think I'll go to bed. I have to get up relatively early.

Alright cool. Later dood.

3:37 AM
See ya pal

Hell yes! Reboot of PC somehow magically makes UnityVS work now

Reboot again, it doesn't work.

Oh god lets hope not

only one way to find out

I'll find out on Sunday
When I bring my PC back home

3:42 AM
You at a conference or something?

Just hanging out with friends who want to make a game

Sounds like a disaster
waiting to happen

Pretty much lol
My brother was like "all right lets split up and work on stuff now!" I'm just like... uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
We've not actually designed anything to work on

lol

So I'm letting them hash out the details

3:44 AM
"Alright guys let's make a game!" "Hurray!" does freeze-frame group high five
5 minutes later: "So uh, what now?"
idk wanna go get pizza?

lol pretty much
this was just an excuse to put a shit tons of pcs in the same room and eat junk food

Glorified LAN party

Haha pretty much

I need to clean my machine...
The 3 vents on the bottom front are super dusty

My case keeps the insides pretty clean it makes me happy. Need to clean some fans / vents and whatnot but the internals are looking good
@IcyDefiance how the hell is your friday night man?

3:46 AM
Thinking about getting a new heatsink anyways, might just replace that and clean it then

The heatsink I bought didn't fit in my new case lol
Stock cooling seems to be doing well though

lol!
My stock cooling is fine, but I'm pretty sure it's the loudest thing ever
I just want something quieter

I think this concept is pretty cool - gizmodo.com.au/2014/07/…
GPU is an issue there though

Why's a GPU an issue?

I don't think it has a high end gaming gpu in it

3:52 AM
Hi all

If there was an all in one package that did that with a nice gaming GPU I'd get one
@PsychOPhobiA hey you

@SpartanDonut Man I am going into a crush mode

I don't know what that means

I use a straw and blow out my computer's dust lol

@SpartanDonut Really?

3:53 AM
@Chris Canned air :P

@hasherr lungged air!

sighs

:p

Boy is it me or am I feeling very emotional for some reason

It's definitely you. Teenage hormones and such.

3:55 AM
I hate hormones

lol why does that not suprise me
Mr. Monotone over here hates hormones, WHJAT A SHOCK

lol

lol wut
Mr. Monotone?

Yeah that's you. I always thought your voice was very monotone.

Monnotone?

3:57 AM
If you are referring to our gaming, Playing at night I tend to try to be quiet to not wake other people :P

Do you live in a building or something?

I live with my mother in law

Ah
I always forget that you're married.

lol yeaaah

4:25 AM
reappears
@SpartanDonut just playing endless games of LoL. mostly losing.

4:53 AM
Am I wrong for wanting to snitch on my shitty coworker for all the shit he gets away with?

What kind of shit?

I'm going to be honest, I've had some drinks so it's a little bit energetic.

Snitching is not really wrong
It might get you a repuatation though is the balance you have to strike
Closing up shop hours early, especially since he's likely getting paid for it, is wrong.
That's essentially stealing from the company
I don't know if I give a shit about the dog unless there are some health code issues

Honestly the dog isn't huge, it's just a show of how he thinks.

5:10 AM
Also, you shouldn't drink ;)

I didn't say what I was drinking.

This is true

Let's just say it's 'caffeine'

I kind of assume they are caffeinated beverages but no one says it like that so I can't be certain

It's not caffeine. :P
It's what you initially thought it was lol

5:11 AM
I know
You shouldn't drink

Eh. At a friends house and his dad is cool. Might as well have some fun, just not too much.
@SpartanDonut Why not?

5:43 AM
Drinking responsibly is okay
just need to fix a couple of little bugs, almost ready

MLM
I am excited to try it out!

Looks awesome Chris :P

:D
it is frantic fun, small decisions to be made with loot, being able to jump in front of your teammate and block attacks if they're stunned, fun co-op when someone has the stealth dagger and wants to initiate, and of course fun times with the katana
and the pressure when your mate's fallen and you have to revive them, but you're on low health yourself so every move is critical hehe

@hasherr Because you're underage

@SpartanDonut According to what? US law?

5:50 AM
Yup
Certain laws allow minors to drink

US law says all kinds of things. There are more pressing matters, i don't think anybody will really care if a sixteen year old has a few drinks, as long as they're responsible about it.

but there are reasons the laws are in place

Of course, I can't speak for ALL sixteen year olds, just myself, but I try and be reasonable.
And if I'm not reasonable, then I know right away in the morning.
That hasn't happened so far.

Orr, you're like me, and don't get hangovers :P

Being drunk doesn't sound too appealing to me. What's fun about not remembering a night?

5:54 AM
What does being drunk have to do with not remembering?

well that's easy to fix. just drink some more so you don't remember that you don't remember that night. :D

I have only ever had a lapse of memory once in my whole life.
And I was drunk beyond what was reasonable.
Just stick with having fun, and it's no problem.

user92578
@Chris That looks so awesome!

@William'MindWorX'Mariager Memory loss is often a cause of being drunk isn't it?

user92578
Hey all!

5:56 AM
Yeah Chris your game is super fun, me and my friend were playing it earlier.
We wanted to see who could get farther.

@hasherr No, that's a cause of drinking irresponsibly. You have to really push the limits to actually have memory loss. If your friends are telling you otherwise, they're likely just trying to sound cool or something. Drinking your way into memory loss is not an easy task. :P

Ah, thanks for the info. I didn't know.
Anyways, I'm going to go watch GoT with my friend, see you guys tomorrow.

@William'MindWorX'Mariager for the win

@MickLH It's a pretty handy trait :P
Though I only use it like once a year. It's pretty rare for me to be drinking.

lol its dangerous for me, I could stupidly drink ridiculous until blackout and then not even realize I blacked out the night before until I ask myself what happened the night before
I'm stuck in the bay area right now with my girlfriend
its looking like we're gonna catch a greyhound lol
be back tomorrow probably, peace

1 hour later…
7:30 AM
I sometimes wonder what controls what VS allows you to create as new items in a project.
Like, in an XNA project, I can't create new WPF windows.
Only WPF controls.

user92578
7:48 AM
Made a blog post of my current project: classnonetype.blogspot.fi/2014/08/gunhero.html

user92578
(Tell me if it's stupid or makes no sense)

Looks good. It's a good thing to keep around when doing other projects. Looking back of previous mistakes will help you avoid them next time around. :)

Aye, very cool, thanks for sharing!
The needing 6 files thing sounds annoying :((

Yeah, ECS is pretty great, but takes some space.

2 hours later…
10:04 AM
I am writing an ebook for the first time
Although I am having one heck of a time trying to figure out where to start

user92578
Hey @PsychOPhobiA

@Tyyppi_77 Hi
@Tyyppi_77 How are u?

user92578
Doing great, wrote a blog post today and now I'm about to head for a picnic

10:20 AM
YOu have a GF now?

4 hours later…
user92578
2:11 PM
@PsychOPhobiA What? Where did you get that?

user92578
3:25 PM
I'm testing Lua Scripting in C++

user92578
It's quite cool

user92578
Actually I haven't got to the C++ part yet... it's all C so far

3:42 PM
I don't like Lua.
I can't put my finger on exactly what I don't like, but I don't like it.

back when I tried lua with c++, I had huge problems getting classes to work
I wonder if it's nowdays easier

4:14 PM
Anyone here use IntelliJ?

I do
I have at least

I'm trying to figure the project management out. I want to break my current project into multiple projects and be able to control the build order. Same along how VS lets you have a solution with multiple projects.

Hm I haven't used it that much to know advanced things liek that

Oh well. I like IntelliJ as a code editor a lot. Find the project management pretty intuitive so far though.

user92578
4:46 PM
So what is scripted in games?

user92578
(sorry for a broad question)

Its chat, no problem with that. Most of the times I've seen it used are for data and AI.
lol Sorry for the equally broad answer.

scripting can be used in almost anything, from game mechanics to world event scripting and configurations

user92578
@ClassicThunder Its chat, no problem with that.

5:44 PM
any C# guys around?

For another 5 minutes or so =p

ok
we're having memory fragmentation problems
it's a golf game
so one potential solution would be to make a second heap for allocations during a level
then clean out that heap entirely before starting the next level
can you make a second heap and tell it to use that?

Eh I doubt it, don't know

5:48 PM
You can put some stuff on the stack by making them structs

heyo

oh that's win api

Jeah exactly

many things we work with can't be structs because our iOS serializer won't work with structs.

Anyway, I'm off

5:49 PM
I'm not sure how you are having memory fragmentation issues? The GC moves things around in memory when it gets run to remove gaps.

bye
not on iOS in Unity
it uses the Mono 2.6 Boehm GC, which doesn't move things
so we're having serious issues
No sign of Unity updating this until sometime in the 5.x cycle

I would think that InteropServices would make it platform specific to windows though.
In fact I think you can get to customizing how the memory management works without binding your app to OS level code.

6:07 PM
I don't think InteropServices is restricted to Windows, because Unity uses Mono. the specific way you use the services might be different, though, like in this (unrelated) example: mono-project.com/Interop_with_Native_Libraries
no idea how to solve Almo's problem though

No it isn't but if what you are interoping with is restricted to windows then now you are too.

Hey @Grey

Hey hows it going?

fine

I'm tieing into user32 and Imm32 which are windows services.

6:12 PM
except almost drowning in a new big project

odd, I tried tying into user32 once to bypass xna's shitty polling input, and it was pretty slow. like just moving the mouse was jerky and annoying. I wonder what I did wrong...
doesn't really matter. MLM showed me nuclex and I started using that instead.

@joapet99 heh

@ClassicThunder yeah that's my worry too

Its monogame safe in so far as monogame actually fkn works
so Mac + Windows but the mousewheel is bugged out on Linux

6:44 PM
that moment when you're using NetConn's as your key and are testing locally. -> Cannot has same key pls
If I want to send an Obj across the "wire", I would have to break it down into bits, and then use a BinaryReader on the other end I'd imagine?

oh dear
exactly how I feel when using lidgren

I made a small item transport thingy to try out my WPF/XNA hybrid. dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/992656/YeOldeFactory.1.zip
It outperforms any solution I've tried so far. It's a bit of a hack, but it's the best option there is.
Even the last attempt I made, which I thought was effective, is nothing compared to this.

BTW I asked a question over on SO if anyone can help
0
Q: How to use Kotlin anonymous classes as arguments for native JavaScript Functions?

ClassicThunderI am setting up the interop layer for this ThreeJS class and the constructor of the class takes in a object which is used to set the properties. //PointCloudMaterial.js THREE.PointCloudMaterial = function ( parameters ) { THREE.Material.call( this ); this.color = new THREE.Color( 0...

7:17 PM
@Grey do you have knowledge about making images of creatures that don't exist

@ClassicThunder You're using THREE.js?
What do you think of it?
I personally thought it was ok.

I like it a lot. Its a clean and simple abstraction over pretty much everything WebGL/Canvas can do.
Don't like JS but that's why I'm using Kotlin compiled to JS

@ClassicThunder Why don't you like JS?

I like prefer statically typed languages. I like a proper class/inheritance system over prototyping. JS has no proper module/package system. Kotlin/C# ect.. are much more expressive. The scoping of "this" is confusing at times.

7:34 PM
I just dislike JS because it's totally crazy. Like C++ is known for forcing people to learn about hundreds of niche cases and random things where the code behaves completely differently from what you would expect. Take that, make it 10x as bad, and replace all of C++'s totally descriptive error messages with NaN, and you have JS.

One day I hope browsers will use a sandboxed VM instead of any particular language.
At this rate no is going to use JS anyways they are giong to use Scala, Kotlin, CoffieScript, etc... and simply treat JS as a platform.

@joapet99 ?

7:59 PM
@Grey You know, for troe I need a race image for each of the 3 races. I am not good at making game art, I can just make really simple drawings. I thought maybe you had a teqnique for drawing creatures or if you want to you can make the race images. I have made they based on the 7 deadly sins. You can see the stats for each race here: docs.google.com/document/d/…

I don't know if I'm good with creatures :v
Creatures = Anatomy study
(the really good drawings at least)

I don't think they need to be very complicated though
@Grey and you can make creatures. Remember that giralion you made?

haha okay. I'll give it a try
When do you need them?

No deadline :P take the time you need

(doing omniaudio prog right now btw)
@joapet99 Okay give me a few days and you should have them by 8/4

8:21 PM
@Grey what is a omniaudio prog

Does anyone have any thoughts on using apache mahout for machine learning with game development, are there any alternatives.

not many of the regulars here have touched machine learning. don't think anyone online right now has.
I'd love to try it sometime, but I haven't yet

ok, just fishing...yeah its a spooky fit for a game imo

8:59 PM
realizes the importance of seralizable classes
The NetConnection class in Lidgren isn't seralizable so, I ended up changing the structure of ClientDialog(rightfully so, because it makes no sense to use two connections between two computers as a key.) to use an IPEndPoint as a key, for removing/adding and checking for duplicate. o/

How do they plan on landing this thing?
I mean, I would just strap two rockets on the side, but that only works in KSP.
Big parachute?
That wouldn't work on the moon though.

but some "thrusters" on each side of the vehicle.
and leave the balancing to the pilots
works in lunar lander
which means it works irl

Well yeah, I suppose skycrane would be your best bet.
Though I think they would most likely assemble it on the moon.

9:15 PM
I prefer using ORM for persistence to avoid serialization issues. Tho that comes at a cost of an object orientation impedance mismatch.

@Grey All you would really need is two thrusters. You'd just need to put them at the center of mass.
What exactly is serialization?

serialization is just the process of converting data from one format to another. you can serialize a C# object to json for example.

"In computer science, in the context of data storage, serialization is the process of translating data structures or object state into a format that can be stored (for example, in a file or memory buffer, or transmitted across a network connection link) and reconstructed later in the same or another computer environment."
Wikipedia yo

@Grey Sometimes I run my mouth before I run my search :P

"that can be stored" - didn't think of it that way, but yeah, that must be right. and deserialization is when you load it back into the program.

9:18 PM
Bad habbit, NSFW.

okay MVC with ASP.NET is fucking crazy

\o/

like I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. nothing makes sense anymore. :'(

@SpartanDonut send help

ALL MY C# KNOWLEDGE IS A LIE

9:19 PM
@IcyDefiance I'm in the same boat

Is this pre-serialized?

This is an object in it's natural state
Seralization occurs when enzymes in your saliva break down the compound.
lol
@AidanMueller Who eats fruit loops :v
blegrh

@Grey They actually taste kind of good. But I don't ever buy them.

there's a dynamic variable called ViewBag, and it doesn't have properties until you say 'ViewBag.Message = "Message text";' and then instead of throwing an exception IT ADDS A PROPERTY CALLED MESSAGE!
C# doesn't do that! it's black magic I tell you!

@IcyDefiance Huheuhehu. Have you looked at Razor yet?
<b>@ViewBag.Exclamation</b>

9:24 PM
@IcyDefiance That sounds kind of retarded.

@{
    ViewBag.Title = "Server Listings";
    //var db = Database.Open("Servers");
    //var selectedData = db.Query("SELECT * FROM Servers");
    var grid = new WebGrid(source: Model,rowsPerPage: 20);

}

Wait, this is for what now?

Within the CSHTML
CS+HTML and ViewBag with Razor Syntax is very cool. You don't even need to JS

is that what it's called? Razor? that works.

I will go so far as to say.. YOU DON'T EVEN NEED TO JQUERY

9:26 PM
I'm just trying to figure out the best way to pull a list of links from the database and display them on the page

If I ever write a language, it will support stuff like this: make(a_game that: has better graphics than crysis, has the world's best gameplay, is pretty much just the most awesome thing on earth, yeah that's pretty much it)

tutorials have me creating classes inheriting from DbContext and then they somehow populate with data with magic or some crazy shit like that. I don't understand any of it.

@MartinSojka Why does it seem like you never post anything here?
It feels as though you are just always watching, silently, not saying anything.

@IcyDefiance Thats the way to do it
@IcyDefiance "DefaultConnection" check your Web.config

9:30 PM
A NoSQL solution is very responsive, look in to redis: redis.io ... and no object-relational impedance mismatch like the regular dbs.
@grey

woah. this looks cool @AsadHasan

 Whining Room

This room is for whining in. All manner of QQ will be tolerated.

XD

@Grey You should join me there.
