Joe
12:54 AM
what does everyone use to protect their personal top secret files
paid drop box? google drive? something else? amazon cloud?

if it's that secret, don't put them on the internet
if you have to put them on the internet, mega probably has the best security

Joe
its not really secret
just thinking of taking a jump into protecting my backups and my projects
wanted to see what people actually use and how they like it

I use mega anyway. it has a desktop client that works exactly like dropbox, except you get more than 27 KB/s download rates

Joe
thats 2 mega recommendations and i havent heard of it

and the creator has major issues with the US government, so you know the NSA won't be touching it
you know, just on principle

Joe
12:57 AM
or maybe you just recommended it twice

probably
it's made by Kim Dotcom, if you're familiar with his story

Joe
did he do the secure email systems
and basically said "warrant or gtfo"

no that was someone different. Lavabit was the service, but I forget the creator's name.

Joe
mega co nz?

Joe
12:59 AM
and you use the desktop sync software?

yep, but you don't have to

Joe
are you mac by any chance

nope, windows

Joe
ok lets free trial and see whats up

kim dotcom owned megaupload, which was taken offline without any warning or warrant or anything. then the US sent FBI agents to his country to convince the police force there to raid his house with machine guns, dogs, and even a helicopter, even though there was no reason to believe he was dangerous.
they confiscated his servers and illegally shipped them to the US and have refused to give them back in spite of repeated court orders to do so, and they confiscated million dollar cars and paintings for no reason at all.
the story just keeps going on and on, the US government just doing one illegal thing after another
and all this was for one reason
his site was being used by a lot of pirates
hell, he even had a page to report any pirated files and he removed them when they were reported, exactly how it's supposed to work

Joe
1:03 AM
so im less interested in using this now
lol how is he going to protect my files on his servers

well even his old website had crazy encryption, so the FBI can't access of the files other people hosted on them
mega went even stronger, encrypting the traffic between your computer and his servers too
they're also hosted in a different country now, which should be harder for the US to touch

Joe
hmm it is very interesting, but i don't need encryption just reliable "backups"

sure, but there's a bunch of different sites for that. I just go with mega on principle, because there's not really anything else to set the services apart.

Joe
how about IP, do i own my shit
or do they

you should double-check that. I glanced at it and it looked like you have more ownership than if you hosted on google drive, but I don't remember details.

Joe
1:07 AM
shudder... this world... wtf

lol, I've visited security related forums a couple times recently and it seems just being hosted in the US is widely considered a vulnerability. it's hilarious.

Joe
just tried spider oak
software on mac is shit - no go
lets try mega
ideally dropbox has the software i want, just should be able to sync stuff
but their security is atrocious
i dont want people to be able to just url link into my stuff

I thought you need a public folder for that...or wait, that was removed, you have to make it public some other way...

Joe
not sure but someone smarter than me whom i trust told me to stay away

eh, well I don't have an argument against it, so that's fair
my only complaint with dropbox is they have no bandwidth. I couldn't host any more than 5 MB there without getting pissed.

Joe
1:20 AM
im patient
mega software is good!
ok lets find out if i own my own stuff
yea that speed is nice

Does this work for anyone scott-franks.com?

Joe
im getting to the site
but seeing the domain set as the ip

ugg x.x, trying to fix that
thanks

Joe
thats what happens if i click anything
np
were that my linux machine, id start with the virtual hosts

Yeah know about that one, that's next on the TODO list.

Joe
idk what ghost is tho

4:02 AM
Its a droplet on cloud.digitalocean.com/droplets using Namecheap for the DNS/Domain name
Ghost is just a node.js based blogging platform

Joe
you got that under control?
well either way, id check the namecheap dns, what i would try and set up is pointing the domain "nameservers" to your digital ocean droplets nameservers
and routing your dns from the digital ocean panel... with all the subdomain records you need: @ * [YOUR IP] @ www [YOUR IP]
should clear up the ip display issue
well i guess thats counting on you doing your own vhosts as well... but im assuming because its a DO droplet you are

Like this?

Joe
so no all you are doing there is telling scott-franks.com to redirect to the ip
what you want to do is delegate management from Namecheap to Digital ocean
and you can do that by setting the "nameservers"
let me see if i cant dig up the digital ocean article on this before i have to log

Awesome thanks

Joe
no problem
so that should get you started
the big picture is this:
delegate management from namecheap -> digital ocean using nameservers
then you use the Digital ocean DNS panel
to say from domain X to droplet ip
and third (depending on what your doing) for apache stuff we do it like this: using virtual hosts "point all incoming traffic looking for domain X to directory Z"
allright i gota head out
ill be on first thing am
good luck

4:19 AM
Thanks, much appreciated.

not a problem

Looks like we have a spammer.

10:08 AM
would be easy to detect and autoremove these
same answer to 4 questions

10:58 AM
Meh, it's not really worth it to program a thing for that, cause no spammer worth his money would do that

depends on how hard it is to make it
I'd guess that there should be a system in place to detect spammers already
@KevinvanderVelden no spammer worth his money would also spam on SO instead of e-mails so I think we're safe from those worth their money

Well jeah, have you seen how little spam SE gets?
It's rare that we find a spammer we have to flag

nope, I'm not online all the time
just a few streaks with a lot of time in between

11:32 AM
Orrrrr in the couple of hours it would take to script that I could just recognise it's a spam account and ban it in 5 clicks...

yeah, I would not waste more than a half-hour on that

I noticed something about ubuntu last night! or rather, about nvidia

2:00 PM
nvidia stuck a fucking splash screen in the boot sequence

@IcyDefiance which is?

Jon
hah.

@IcyDefiance wut?

for real. I didn't install anything from them except the gpu driver, so I'm guessing it has to be that.

Jon
Probably.

2:00 PM
@IcyDefiance that's the proprietary driver

Jon
where do you see the splash?

install open source one so it won't show it

Jon
I had nothing but trouble with Nvidia + linux.

all nvidia drivers apparently suck for linux

Jon
Yah, because nvidia hates linux.

2:01 PM
@Lasse im using the proprietry right now as my GPU is new and not supported yet

well, I managed to have some luck with the open-source one

@Jon while booting. just a full screen logo for a few seconds, then it moves on. makes it take almost 2x as long to boot though.

at least some things were working
but then it randomly decides to crash

Jon
Pretty sad that open source drivers do a better job than the ones that come from the factxory

Q: Help me solve my father's riddle and get my book back

LevixMy father is a mathteacher and as such he regards asking tricky questions and playing mathematical pranks on me once in a while as part of his parental duty. So today before leaving home he sneaked into my room and took the book I am currently reading! The book is quite old and damaged with one ...

Jon
2:02 PM
aka, fuck you nvidia.. for derping linux drivers.

@Nick that's the only downside of open source drivers

Jon
Kinda makes you wonder if Microsoft is in on it

the "only" downside? There must be another, even if it is small. :)
haha MS :)

the proprietary drivers has so much stupid bugs that needs to be taken to account when doing some game engines

the open-source ones aren't that good anyway
they seem to mess up the intel drivers that want to peacefully coexist

2:02 PM
drivers are one of the most annoying facets of modern computers.

I have a multi-gpu setup
which is fucked up by the nvidia drivers
works on windows but for linux, I can have only one screen or the other
or two different desktops for each

Jon
I had a nvidia card.. worked fine on windows... installed Ubuntu... next thing you know it fan is at 100%

it's unbelievably lame, the whole linux/X/GPU situation

Jon
Tried everything to fix it.. everything
Eventually the card failed after about a week
fuck you nvidia.

card failure probably was from something else
they don't make cards, y'know
just the GPU designs

Jon
2:04 PM
no, but the drivers made the fan fail
the fan stopped spinning after about a week of being at 100%
because of the linux drivers.

Joe
@IcyDefiance so i signed up for mega - the software is great

weird drivers, then

Jon
Anyways, bought an ATI, no problems now.

drivers shouldn't be able to kill things, though

that sucks (about your vid card)

2:05 PM
we're really past that age
at least, I hope

Jon
it was an older card, but still..

@Joe I'm surprised it has a mac version... but hey, lucky you :P

Joe
its actually very good
operates just like dropbox which i like
just looking for sync

it also maintains a trash can thing with a folder for each day, so if you delete things you won't lose them. in other words, automatic backup.

man, I cared for micro optimizations way too much!

Q: C-like callback handling: which algorithm preforms faster?

Ali.SI have an array of call backs like this void (*callbacks[n])(void* sender) and I'm wondering which one of these codes will preform faster : //Method A void nullcallback(void* sender){}; void callbacka(void* sender) { printf("Hello "); } void callbackb(void* sender) { printf("world\n")...

2:08 PM
the website maintains that folder. it's not on your computer.

Jon
Yah, what a stupid question
the "cloud" aka the NSA

@Ali.S and managed to miss a much bigger optimization
call the callback once, put the loop inside it
helps avoid the random-call overhead

@snake5 what do you mean?

put the loop inside the callback
how many meanings exist for that?

@snake5 while that would be an optimization, it's usually horrible to do from an organizational standpoint. I've had that idea a lot of times and never has it been smart.

2:11 PM
@IcyDefiance depends on the rest of the code
though it seems it might not be very useful in this case
if it's an array of random callbacks

@snake5 I seriously can't understand what the code will look like after doing that

Jon
some guy at work didn't know how to do a ajax call on page load... so he put a timer event.

yeah, you're probably right here, it won't help

Jon
then disables the timer when it is run...
it "works"

anyway, method B is better from my experience
random call is slower than a null comparison
much slower, since there's no way to optimize it

2:16 PM
one guy mentioned in comment, that null comparison might result in wrong branch prediction which results in a pipeline reset which is not very good.

it's a very tight loop
not much chance of that
jumping to a random memory location would definitely load that code into cache though

Joe
any recommendations for linux shell - im looking for a better disk usage

that's just an example, if I'm not wrong I was going to use that routine for a 100k callback loop.
though I only had something about 7-8 different callback functions

depending on how compiler decides to put things in the executable, it may work at different speeds
@Ali.S why would you need a 100k callback loop?

it was going to a read a file (a rather large one) and do things about each line

2:20 PM
huh
I don't see how callbacks fit into it

each line contained a header (which meant a certain callback, or null if it was invalid) and some data to be passed to the respective function

why a callback?
could just be a switch statement

at the very least, it's much more readable than the standard switch statements

I really doubt that
besides, if you're worried about performance, there's really no reason to even consider callbacks

there is a trade off between performance and readability.

2:25 PM
@snake5 not if you don't want some very tight coupling in your code

if I'm not wrong, this was the use case: pastebin.com/sSGJJkjk

Yeah, that would make a switch statement very hard to do =p

well, the files that class loaded were never as big as 100k objects, but they had more than 2-3k each

switch-to-call then
still faster than function pointers

like :
switch(x)
{
case "a" : call_a();break;
case "b" : call_b();break;
}

2:33 PM
Except C++ doesn't support strings in switch statements

Joe
i think you can do weird stuff
not worth it but something conditional there should work

@KevinvanderVelden string-to-integer, then switch-to-call
I mean, if performance is really that important

'a':

Also overhead isn't that big in most cases stackoverflow.com/questions/2438539/…
@Almo that's a character, which would work in @Ali.S's example, but not in the situation we're talking about (where it's whole strings)

right

Joe
2:37 PM
i was just saying it seems weird to use a switch and then place conditions there, why not just use if / else statements
readability?

IMO the code I wrote is much more readable compared to both if/else method and switch/case statements. though it is suffering a little bit performance wise.

Note, this is probably a terrible idea

@Ali.S - I can read that class, and seeing it's in C++ that's saying something.

user92578
lol, I was thinking about that @KevinvanderVelden

I start with a main menu with a play button to start the game

@Blue is it good or bad?

2:50 PM
then i write the core game object, with prototype of gameplay

Good.

@Blue the best part was how easy I could add new features to that parser.

That's my thoughts.
Add new callback, add new feature.
Done.

also introduce the new callback, which a very simple one liner

That too.

@Tyyppi_77 this is hard to do, i try to focus on quick dirty functionality first
then you get the second wind of accomplishment
and you can attempt and cleanup after

^
I try to have some semblance of architecture but I don't necessarily care too much about it.

I care a lot about architecture, but other than a very general picture I often find it easy to just iron things out and refactor as I go (but I work with C#, which is probably a lot easier to refactor than C++)

Joe
@SpartanDonut i got empty shells working last night... hammer and trigger mechanism tonight hopefully for the sim

I went to a play last night.... :D

Joe

that sort of play

Joe
ooo sorry i missed that 'a' letter

haha np

Joe
which, was it any good? i have a horrible track record with theatre
my brain cant do it

3:05 PM
It was really good. We saw The Importance of Being Earnest which was extremely witty and the actors did a great job. My only complaint is the last act felt like the writer got bored and magically made things better as a cop out but the first two acts make up for it.

Kind of hard when you're writing a comedy of errors and you know you have to have a happy ending.
a webcomic I was reading got deep into a comedy of errors.
it got old and I stopped
checked back a couple years later with my book mark, and within a couple days of where I stopped, he said "I'm tired of the comedy of errors shit" and stopped it.

Yeah there isn't much you can do really
Maybe extend the play out another hour so that its not so all of a sudden
but people wouldn't like that either
3 acts is already pretty long

3:21 PM
hahah

@Almo awesome fail levels?!
learning ensues...
the real way is pretty good
joe's state pattern was as doge might say "much fail"

user92578
So what was your state pattern like?

Joe
the exact wrong way. with conditionals on each "transition" to check current state and perform actions
without any oo approach
it seemed bad from the start
just didnt conceive a clean way to make it better

*looks up state pattern*
shit, I can improve there too XD
