Joe
12:30 AM
@OMGtechy @AttackingHobo dead ones too tounges out X eyes im telling you
youll want them

@Joe Yeah. I'm planning on it

1:08 AM
@Joe @OMGtechy @SpartanDonut ^
@Almo I removed the smooth motion on the camera. The snap seems more clean

2 hours later…
3:15 AM
@AttackingHobo i don't see that in the publkished one yet, but I really like the interpolated camera

3:55 AM
@Almo oh I thougth you didn't like it... lol
@Almo should it be quick or slower?

4:22 AM
no i totally like the smooth camera
I thought the way it was was fine

MLM
I like the smooth camera better as well. I think it makes the game look less polished having the snapping.

2 hours later…
5:59 AM

2 hours later…
8:12 AM
I've done it now
I don't even understand what's happening
It's weird because it's like the shader is only affects items when they're in the camera view
@AttackingHobo clue?

8:52 AM
I think smoothstep is causing me this trouble

9:11 AM

user92578
Simple normal mapping makes simple tiles look so much better:

user92578

procedural?

user92578
@AttackingHobo Really cool

user92578
Nah, GIMP plugin

9:12 AM
I meant hobo's

user92578
ah

cause I really want to walk around in it

@Tyyppi_77 thanks. and @Mutch95 kind of procedural

why is making gradient shaders so difficult

user92578
because unity

9:13 AM
I have to interpolate between two values
but If I use smoothstep, the rendering only occurs when the z position is met.
I know why but I just want this to be a surface shader like this

@Mutch95 do you want to walk on it?

user92578
I don't see what you mean

@AttackingHobo on your procedural map, Yes Please!
@Tyyppi_77 see that image?

user92578
yeah

user92578
But I don't see what is the effect there you want

9:15 AM
I want a shader which changes colours by gradient
it's seen quite well on the far right, the tv
this is what i've got

user92578
how it's darker at the top of the TV box than it is at the bottom?

quite ugly

user92578
is that the effect?

Yes that's what i want

user92578
Wouldn't a simple light just do the trick?

9:18 AM
nooooo
It's like a gradient shader

user92578
because that just looks like a light for me

and it has the flat colour theme

@Mutch95 lighting is a gradient shader most of the time. use some lights it will look so much better

I use directional light
and my shader doesn't read point light .-.
is there a way to do this though so it add's a gradient to all surfaces?
@AttackingHobo is the map explorable?

kind of
let me see

9:30 AM
can I try :D?
oh I'm excited

9:49 AM
@Mutch95 its laggy im working on it

alright :p
I'm just looking at this cool GLSL shader sandbox
Complete acid trip
I guess this is a nice minor change to my shader
with the gradient displaying when the camera is close to an object

user92578
realllly cool

@Lokkij check that out ^
@Tyyppi_77 :)

Looks awesome
I like the shader

that is cool!
is there a way to retrieve the lights pos or angle in CGPROGRAM?
:/

10:39 AM
?

Holy shit that looks really cool

@Lokkij thanks

I like that view a lot less

@Lokkij how bout that

Hmm. It's better, but I like the first one best.

user92578
How would I go about rendering some basic geometric shapes line a box that only has outlines or a box filled with a color in OpenGL? A separate shader?

11:22 AM
@AttackingHobo Reminds me of Gunkanjima.
I mean, the previous pictures.

user92578
aihgt I'm almost back to what I had with SDL

user92578

user92578
I need text rendering back and then I need to figure out why the performance is so crappy

@SpartanDonut If you've come up with anything even a slightly more detailed answer for that snapping-to-surfaces question I'd be happy to bounty-award that. (Just a reminder. There's 3 days left of it and the existing answer is boooriiinnggg. :D)

11:38 AM
Profiling, profiling, profiling.
@Tyyppi_77 Profiling is your best friend

1 hour later…
user92578
12:43 PM
My WTF moment of the day

user92578

user92578
like it makes no sense

@Anko @SpartanDonut how is that hard?
I mean, just think about it!
save a copy of mesh vertices cpu side
and when you have mesh you also do have the normals

@Tyyppi_77 Github itself is not open source either

user92578
yeah

user92578
12:53 PM
but an utility app like that definetely should be, at least when the app itself is lacking a dark theme...

user92578
every program needs a dark theme

you just need to adjust your physics engine so that for each object, gravity is exactly opposite direction of that normal vector

Jon
1:11 PM
MinuteMaid is a really bad name for a company

@Ali.S I hadn't thought of anything like that. Maybe you should write an answer. :)

@Anko I'm writing it

Yey :D

user92578
what GL_RGB enum should I use for data that has 8 bits per pixel?

Jon
24 bit
RGBA8
well, if you want the alpha channel.. if not RGB8

user92578
1:14 PM
I should probably recode all my text rendering as I'm currently just getting a black box...

Jon
either that, or fix it
lol
can you see my hat?
i don't see it
meh, hats are kinda weird

user92578
no i dont

Jon
i took it off

user92578
I have over 1500 draw calls a frame, no wonder it's so slow

Jon
yah.. batch that
you probably need to implement your own spritebatching

user92578
1:19 PM
I wonder what would be a good place to implement that...

user92578
in the renderer? a separate class?

Jon
I'd look at where you are making the draw calls
and go as low level as you can
then implement it there, lol

user92578
Currently most of the draw calls are coming from the box renderer... that process doesn't even use any textures

user92578
maybe I'll just create a CLineBatcher, a CBoxBatcher and a CSpriteBatcher

Jon
are you using any sort of profiler?

user92578
1:23 PM
I used NVIDIA Nsight for seeing what happens in one frame in terms of GPU calls

user92578
CPU profiling comes out clean

user92578
so some simple batching should solve my problems

@Anko done

Jon

1:41 PM
Just setup a few new OSes, Linux was the only one that worked out of the box flawlessly on every machine and supported all the hardware ;)
But to be fair, microsoft did solve the issues with one of their programs after only like 10 minutes on the phone.
@AttackingHobo it just occured to me that you probably misunderstood me earlier, there is no good reason to use the standard naive FXAA / MLAA approach there, you already know everything you need while rendering the cubes, you can even do a 2 pass system with only the wireframe to reduce blending bandwidth if you can't make the dynamic background procedural

3 hours later…
Jon
4:49 PM
@AttackingHobo so gonna add an option for font selection - since you convinced me
old numbers are at the left -- new at the right

Jon
5:05 PM

Jon
5:18 PM
Which one is best between those 3 ?

Joe
5:41 PM
I like second that will work on any color

Jon
dropping #1
gonna put 2 and 3 as options I think
since @AttackingHobo is really persistent about it

maybe you should ask a graphic designer
it's their job to figure these things out :)

5:56 PM
Hey guys!
I have a yes or no question
Is Direct3D free to use? (like OpenGL is free to use)

Jon
pfft. @Almo

Jon

@Jon I'm serious

6:01 PM
if the question is legibility, then graphic designers are all about that

Jon
I think i'm getting there @Almo
not interested in hiring some random

it's definitely improving
i don't mean hire
that was a StackExchange site
they will answer for free
post some of your options and ask what they think
maybe the question has already been answered

Jon
yeah I guess
I was thinking of putting black on lighter tiles, and white on darker tiles.
but i think white looks better
Attacking hobo prefers the black
So I was goin to add an option for black fonts -- and have it default to white
@TheMuffinCoder btw, your answer is yes

@Jon THANKS
i wasnt sure since different sources said otherwise

Jon
what sources?

6:10 PM
yahoo....

Jon
there is no licensing required to sell directx products
you can write something , sell it, make hundreds, and keep it all

Thank you Jon so much

Jon
i live to give
so once I get this color version design done, i'm gonna have to upgrade the original to have a similar look and feel
oh shiiiiiiit

:D

Jon
my first review
its so awesome to watch some new play it, :D
she really liked it too, thats so cool

6:54 PM
How did she get your game?

Jon
I found her on reddit
i've been asking around for people to review it
she doesn't have a massive number of followers, but she got a gameplay video totally legit experience, totally legit review on youtube for me
Love her for it.

7:13 PM
@SpartanDonut did you understand/try my answer?

I have no clue how to do the copy verts approach

that's the problem?

well I have solved my problem

:D

the second part of your answer is similar to how I solved it (I solved it before you answered)

7:15 PM
kk
then share your own answer

I gave you a vote - still going to write up my answer and I'll also be talking about camera and player movement a bit too

@Jon This actually works out well. Good contrast with a bright background.
Thick black outline on a bright color works fine john. As long as the silhouette is of the letters are dark against a bright background its easy to read.

1 hour later…
8:35 PM
@Mutch95 sup

Jon
8:50 PM
@AttackingHobo the white one?

Yeah. I replied to that one didn't I?

Jon
i dunno

click the little reply arrow next to my comment

Jon
ah cool
didn't even know that was something
i also think it is the best one up to now

click the arrow next to a comment and you reply to that specific comment
Yeah it looks the best and is the most readable
the black on dark bg was weird

9:45 PM

9:57 PM
eh
An unhandled exception of type 'System.ArgumentException' occurred in System.Drawing.dll

Additional information: Parameter is not valid.
var bmp = new Bitmap(files[i]);
files[i] = "Assets/Textures/sh3_n.jpg"
how this can not be valid
the previous filename in the array was valid
it was just "Assets/Textures/sh3.jpg"
also the documentation does not say that it would throw that exception: msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/0cbhe98f(v=vs.110).aspx

ello folks

@OMGtechy sup

hi

how goes things?

10:10 PM
umm
ok then

Question, if you had the choice between no braces and braces (i.e. python style blocks vs C-like blocks), which would you choose and why?

braces for sure
@OMGtechy its more clear where things start and end
I can select start or end bracket and my IDE will highlight the opposite
if(a) {blah} else {asdfasdf};
one liner if else with braces. not the cleanest but its been done before

I'd usually use the ternary operator for things like that, but I see your point. Reason I ask is because I'm considering dropping the no-braces thing in that language I'm mkaing

braces are more clear code block than indentation

10:17 PM
^

That's subjective tbh, but it's good to know how you see it

@OMGtechy also sometimes I will do weird alignment things for the sake of readability

Example?

I removed a few tabs in large nested logic chain so it could fit in my text editor window
with tab based stuff it would break it. but it was fine with the braces

Surely you'd just be better off reducing tab size?

10:19 PM
meh
I don't do that

Still they're valid points

using tabs makes it very rigid for no good reason
I don't like the language restricting me in arbitrary ways

Well, Python does it and I love it personally. I haven't found a time where I wished I could use braces. But then again, I need to see both sides of this

at my workplace our strict coding conventions rule that tabs are two spaces, which makes the braces even more clear compared to indentation

Wait what? Why would they restrict your tab sizes? It's a personal choice and has no effect on others
or do you mean indentation not tabs?

10:25 PM
some software does not like tab characters, so we convert them to spaces

oh right, so you didn't mean tabs you meant indentation

what did you think I ment with tabs? :P

The editor display size must be set to two spaces :P
I was like whaaat

lol

anyway, some good points folks thanks
was watching a video by Douglas Crockford which had a few good points
prompted me to look at what I had so far again

10:31 PM
@OMGtechy link?

10:47 PM
47 mins ago, by Lasse
also the documentation does not say that it would throw that exception: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/0cbhe98f(v=vs.110).aspx
apparantly System.Drawing.Bitmap now throws wrong exception when the file is not found
why.jpg microsoft, why.jpg
T_T

ahaha

Jon
that is art.

I wish the file name of that was why.jpg

MLM
Saw this posted in the HTML/CSS room by cryptic: Vulnerability: update your Git clients

11:00 PM
Yeah Josh posted that here a while back, but thank you!

Jon
nice

MLM

Indeed. Good idea.
I'm surprised such an exploit hasn't come up before, it's quite simple.

@Almo GOT A NEW HIGHSCORE. 41
Its off the screen. hahaha.

11:18 PM
Hmm, is there any point to variadic functions when you have a unified type system?

@OMGtechy Average(numbers ...)

@AttackingHobo vs. just passing an array?

yeah... its easier to just pass a bunch of vars

Mmm

Jon
man coding is awesome

11:21 PM
it is, why are you pointing it out though?

Jon
why not?

fair point aha
ok rephrased
what has prompted this sudden elation?

Jon
reality
so yesterday i got 3 sales

awesome :D

Jon
which is like.. the lowest amount of sales I have gotten since release
no its horrible, lol
I figured my peak was done

11:24 PM
I'd just be happy I got sales for something I made

Jon
11 hours left for today, and i'm at 8 sales
my record is 9
so like.. :D:D:D:D:D

:D :D :D

8======D

Do you ever wonder who these people are? Like, what they do, if they have a family etc.

Jon
they are all over the world
germany, indonedia, united states, norway, australia, its crazy
i wonder if they play my game while they shit
3
if so, then i made it

MLM
11:26 PM
I like it and play it everyday. I do not play any games on the toilet though

ahahahah

Jon
if just one person I never met, played my game while they shat

I play mobile games mostly on the toilet, because I don't really have time or interest to play them elsewhere

Jon
just knowing this, even if it is just a statistic, allows me to continue developing
I thrive on making games that help people drop a brick
its just what I enjoy .. ya know/
its an artform really

yeah, we need people producing all these games playable on toilet

Jon
11:30 PM
if the game lasts too long, you are immediately out of the poop loop

this is the biggest revelation in game design known to man

Jon
if I can't finish taking a shit in 1 level, then you failed big time
first thing I do when testing anyways

I can finish several games of jetpack joyride while taking a shit
a perfect game

Jon
golden game ratio

11:51 PM
Rad Stackive updated! pretentiousarts.com/RadStacking2 Faces, Smoother scrolling, new unfinished HUD, crumbling blocks and more!
2
@Jon @Joe @Lasse @OMGtechy @Almo @hasherr @SpartanDonut @AidanMueller ^^^

I don't like how the previous blocks fall in front of the current game, blocking the view

@Lasse lol

but it's great otherwise (Y)

@AttackingHobo can't see faces on black blocks

oh right, no emoticons here

11:53 PM
or dark blocks

@OMGtechy racist

aha
