Jon
8:07 PM
so apprently you have to clean out your air exchange filters every 6 months

Joe
like for a central air unit?

Jon
yeah
so my unity game stays on when the phone is turned off
whats up with that?

lol :(

Jon
seriously, what would cause that?
I lock my phone. then when I unlock my app is still running
typically it brings me to my lock screen
but when my app is running, it bypasses the lock screen somehow

So you don't have to unlock the phone?

Jon
8:18 PM
yeah

@Jon Yeah, you do. :)

Jon
this little major issues with unity are really pissing me off
this was posted in 2013
I also faced this problem today. After short investigation found out that lockscreen isn't working as it's expected only in developnemt builds. When "Development Build" in "Build Settings" was off, everything worked just fine. Btw. I'm using Unity 4.5.2.
... sigh..

if you can be bothered, make a small test case project and submit it as a bug
or try 4.6
but yeah :( sucks

Jon
i'm wondering if my other bug will be solved by switching from dev build to normal
i'll try that later i guess

Joe
hey so i was thinking - anyone done team dev on unity with source control?
are different versions between members going to break stuff

Jon
8:25 PM
@Almo cleaned mine out, just now... there was like 1000000 bugs stuck in the filter
mainly a pile of mosquitoes
i should of taken a picture
was like 5 years of accumulation without cleaning lol
I'm gonna go buy a replacement filter

hahaha
@Joe yeah we do

@Joe Don't edit the same files at the same time with unity and VC

we use Perforce for source control, and the P4 plugin for automatic checkout

Jon
unity source control seems scary
do you need pro for it?

Joe
but say i have unity 4.5.1 and someone else is on 4.5.x
is that going to cause issues?

8:28 PM
yes
or, at the very least, don't count on it not causing issues

Joe
lol

@Jon its probably a feature for easier testing without having to constantly unlock the phone

Joe
@SpartanDonut what version of unity are you on?

Jon
@AttackingHobo possibly yeah

@Joe expect it to cause all the issues.
@Jon I don't think you've seen my progress on Minesweeper VR

8:31 PM
@Joe uhhhh

4.6 of some sort

Joe
im definately not on 4.6...
ill start there
uhh where does one get 4.6...

just search google for unity 4.6
top hit

Joe
8:34 PM
derp... ty sorry

:D

Joe
i was on the unity download page and it wasnt there at all

Jon
nice
does that have rift support?
gotta run for now

@Jon not yet. Its going to tonight though

Jon
ps.. i cleared all levels
270
i think it is a decent number for a launch
i made the most 15x15 so that people couldn't say it was all small puzzles :)
ok bbl

Joe
8:40 PM
lol im watching sql tutorials on pluralsight... and the guy is using generated fill data for demo purposes... and he is horribly mispronouncing the name "Penelope"
"pen elope"

lol
I haven't heard the name Penelope in like forever

Joe
its a good crazy name

making a class called CorpseMaker... gonna try to drop and rotate body parts to the ground in a pile when a unit dies. not using physics if I can help it

Maybe it should be an interface... IMakeCorpses

I should read up on the whole Interface thing
I see it here and there

Joe
8:54 PM
remoted into my home machine to start downloading unity 4.6 beta... <3 technology

so an Interface
just a base abstract class thing
remoting is awesome
sounds similar to having a super class and then making a child class of it call super and stuff?

Joe
there are some good reads on it... let me see if i can find the one i liked
cant find it...

I think I get the gist of it
but from a Unity standpoint, I feel like just creating a reusable/portable component and attaching it to appropriate GameObjects to easily share things, sort of does the same at the end of the day?
certain cases, Interface sounds better
but yeah, different ways of doing stuff :3

Yeah my comment was mostly joking

I got that part :P lol

9:07 PM
But to kind of put things in perspective, to use the horrible car analogy that probably shouldn't get used

but got me thinking too

Actually yeah the car analogy is just bad
It's a lot like components but forcing components upon a class and then being able to write code that works with objects that have implemented certain interfaces

yeah

Simply using inheritence will get you in a mess with silly hierarchies
Why make a CarWithHorn and a BoatWithHorn when you could simply have Boat : IHorn and Car : IHorn
And you only have to write IHorn once
The trick is balancing simple composition with interfaces

indeed, that's a good example

9:12 PM
This discusses inheritance

I've only read the first two sentences but I'm intrigued already

I'm a big fan of the Codeless Code, and have read most of them
I don't think it appeals to pure-engineer types

Joe
@Almo LOL

hehehe

What is the difference between sprites & textures?

9:18 PM
@Mr.777 Sprites are better for 2d stuff
They automatically have the correct aspect ratio
and they are unlit by default I think

@AttackingHobo Okay but what exactly are these two?

I'm tired of Alex telling me my domain is up for renewal

@Almo I like how each article has a geekiness rating.

@Mr.777 textures are mainly used for 3d stuff

hahah yeah

9:20 PM
Texture is just an image in memory, and sprite is something more suitable for drawing 2d objects, and usually sprites use textures for drawing

Like walls or floors or effects and things. Textures are images that can be applied onto objects. Look into UV texturing if you want to make some 3d stuff
Yeah. what @Lasse said.

sprites and textures are images
yet I would say texture is for a large model of something, whereas a sprite can be just a single image on its own

Sprites are just a wrapper around textures to make it easier to work with when doing 2d-ish design
Sprites in unity are usually more efficient too

like a 3D model would have a texture to be perceived as an entity in a world
a sprite is just a single image but is an entity as well

They automatically get a mesh made for it, and only render over where the mesh is, instead of wasting gpu power drawing transparent pixels

9:22 PM
Sprites are fairies in the woods. Textures are like fur and corduroy.

Texture sounds like a piece of literature
in that sense :p

@SpartanDonut Booo. stop confusing the noobs

lol

Well we had 6 people shout their opinion on the two so I thought I'd just do the same :D

:D

9:23 PM
alright more like 2
but still

a sprite is merely a texture applied to a square mesh that always faces the camera
aka billboarded quad

see, I would call it a SpriteCreature then just to not confuse things :p

@IcyDefiance nope
Sprites are not quads

well if you use orthographic projection they aren't billboarded, but they are quads, or at least they usually are behind the scenes

aren't they though? at the most basic level? a square/rectangle displaying an image

9:25 PM
No they are not. Unity generates an outline and tessellates the sprite. Its not a quad
I mean, sure if you have a square image, with no alpha it will be a quad

yeah, but behind the scenes. I know Unity will give you the shape of the shape of the image, like an oblong rectangle will show as such
but at the graphics level?

@Chris Nooooooo
It actually uses that mesh

hmm

it makes it more efficient because it doesn't need to attempt to draw blank pixels

right

9:26 PM
ooh I see, so unity might add more vertices than just a quad?

if you make a 1024x1024 sprite, and put a small circle in the center, it will outline the circle and triangulate it.
and only need to render that small area

actually I like that technique. I might add that to my very long to do list for my engine that I never actually work on

instead of blindly rendering the entire thing
And you can use that mesh for collision or other data

In Unity, I have added a new Sorting layer 'Background' and dragged it above 'Default' but when I select the asset in scene view, inspector still shows the 'Default' in Layers dropdown

There different layers that do different things

9:30 PM
Sorting Layer within a Sprite Renderer is just for sprite rendering order

@AttackingHobo I am just following the Pong Game tutorial and I can't select the Background Sorting layer in layers combo box

GameObject Layer is for camera and collision stuff

9:53 PM
anyone here use svn at all?
the client we're working with uses SVN
I have a username and password
but the svn client hasn't asked me for it
but I can get latest and stuff, so I'm connected to the depot for sure

If anyone can help, I've been searching desperately for days for answers to this: gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/87290/…
I can't figure it out for the life of me
it appears my lighting is clamping

sorry; something I know nothing about :(

It seems you're not alone. :( Could you give me an upvote, so maybe I could get some exposure?
Thank you. :)

@Almo I forgot to reply... It's SpartanDonut
Little did anyone know, I've had this name for a long time... not sure why I ever gave it up but now it's back and here to stay

@Sparky I gave you an upvote, and because I'm nice, here's an awesome Dub Techno tune. (this doesn't really get started till half-way through)
@SpartanDonut ok friend request sent

10:01 PM
@Almo Sweet, Thank you! Gives me an opportunity to try my new XL earpads on my V-Moda M-100s. :D

@Almo Not sure about your svn deal. I think you can set it up so anyone can read from it without creds. but to push back up you would most likely need creds
weird/bad configuration though

I somehow managed to zoom the scene view but I never intended to do that :D how can I get it back to the normal view?

@AttackingHobo ok thanks dude.
@Sparky I had some V-Moda a while ago... thought they were pretty good. they were in-ear models
@Sparky And if you dig that, I've been on a Dub Techno hunt since I first discovered it in 2011. So I can post more choice trax if you are interested. :)

@Almo I love my M-100s. Best headphones I've ever listened to.
@Almo I dig this, I wouldn't mind some more. Good thinking music.

@AttackingHobo I have added some player controls script, how can I modify the key bindings from Inspector view? As I can't see any keybindings option :(

How do bounties work? I'm required to pay a bounty to anyone who answers? Or just the accepted answer?
I really need this solved...

@Sparky accepted only.

@AttackingHobo Okay, thanks.

@Joe running out for weeked provisions and I'll be back

@AttackingHobo I know how to input key events, I just can't see them in Inspector view

10:19 PM
@Sparky Ok, I'll drop you one more from the same album for now. :)

Jon
la fin du monde

@Almo, oooh, thanks.

:)
BTW: this album (and the other two in this series) are 100% analog

@Mr.777 click the link in the answer to that question. docs.unity3d.com/Manual/class-InputManager.html

Bounty up for my question... :P Hopefully it wasn't a mistake.

10:24 PM
@Sparky I don't see your issue

Maybe a webm will help.

It seems to be asking the question. "Im shining a light on the front of this object. but the back side is dark. why?"

Perhaps this demonstrates my problem better: dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80900886/light.PNG

Joe
@SpartanDonut I'm on the train omw home, I'm going to do the same thing

It's non-directional, so it should be casting light in all directions, right?

10:31 PM
ok see you guys later :)

@Sparky not really. I have no idea where the light is actually being casted from.
@Sparky ok. imagine this. You have a light bulb hanging from a wire
Its non directional. does it light up the backside of a wall?
Think about what you are trying to do. Lighting usually uses the normal to have shading
If the normal is facing away from the light its not going to be bright

but shouldn't they have some shading, rather than being completely black?

No
add more lights

like a global ambient light, or like a sun spotlight?

Yeah. Or add a minimum darkness instead of pure black

10:39 PM
Alright
I'll try that,

11:07 PM
That thecodelesscode site Almo linked is so much fun to read. It's programming wisdom in a completely different form than what I'm used to.

11:18 PM
But after reading it for a while I read everything as if a wise old monk wrote it.

11:47 PM
@Joe Dinner will be sometime in the near future but otherwise I'm around now

Joe
k im getting installed ill be on axon
going to start on models and rigging
one model 1 rig test

I'm going to make an open source alternative to crazybump, and I'm going to call it Bumps off the rocker.

Guys, i have a question

@Mr.777 What?

I am trying to display some text on Game view but it's not appearing.
I have created a HUD , created a GUI Skin, added font type in it and then added this GUI Skin into HUD layout
Am I missing anything?

11:57 PM
@Mr.777 Is this with Unity?

@AidanMueller Yes, it's with Unity

@Mr.777 Can't help you. LOL.

:(

Some of the others here use Unity though.

@AidanMueller What do you use?

11:58 PM
C++

OpenGL?

Yeah...well, I'm learning OpenGL.
I used to use Java.

@AidanMueller Yep, I am java dev too, so why are you going with C++ then?
