@AlexM. a picture of me sitting on a rotating chair
actually it used to be a video clip before the transformation begun.

still confused :O

@AlexM. here is what happened.
I captured a video of myself rotating on a chair

oooh I think I get it now, and those are frames put together?

from each frame grabbed almost the middle vertical line and attached them all together to create it.

yeah it's clear now

12:06 AM
it's all the power of ffmpeg + powershell + 3 hours my spare time learning required commands for those two :P

1 hour later…
1:32 AM
heh, I love finding little comments I wrote to myself:
// Make the world stop
world.Paused = true;

:D

Completely pointless comment otherwise though
That's disappointing, google finds Glitch Mob's We Can Make The World Stop (also amazing), but I'm pretty sure I meant Dr. Horrible's Freeze Ray

Three steps forwards, one step back.
Is it bad that after programming for some time, I have a need to go back and refactor what I just wrote?
Honestly, I think this is more an issue of, "not sure what structure the code should have" when going in to it
which means step 1 is getting the code working with spit and prayers
and the second step is making it not-hell to work with.

:/ you're tellin' me. I've actually got fewer features now than I did a year or so ago

Are you a hobby programmer too?
Or are you doing development on unemployed/retired/for a living?

hobby game programmer, professional programmer

Oops. Left that word out. I guess I was assuming that, since I'm the same.
At least in my case, the syntax I use at work is very different than in my free time. Otherwise, I think I would go insane.

btnsL->addWidget(close);
//connect the clicked signal from close button to the quit slot
(method)
QObject::connect(close,SIGNAL(clicked()),&a,SLOT(quit()));
return btns;
}
kill me now :((((
also this is kinda cool

Q: What does the explicit keyword in C++ mean?

SkizzSomeone posted in a comment to another question about the meaning of the explicit keyword in C++. So, what does it mean?

one of those things in C++ that you could really live without, but makes nerds happy for knowing it

4 hours later…
7:37 AM
@AlexM., That's how I feel about the "extern" keyword in C#. I know exactly how it works and how to use it to my advantage.

Q: Where should I take opinion based discussions?

Panda PajamaI happen to have lots of topics I wish to discuss with other game programmers. The problem is that these topics are completely opinion-based, and not question-answer based, and therefore not apt for this site. However, I find it a bit wasteful to go somewhere else to do this, because I actually ...

A: Where should I take opinion based discussions?

BlueI would like to entirely disagree on this: chat is a third class citizen I am in there every day, as are 10 regulars that I can name right off the top of my head (including @WilliamMindWorXMariager who commented), new comers every day and questions posted for not only their technical releva...

I wanted to make that picture in a way that my face be in the middle and back of my gets in the sides.
but I just forgot to make a proper video for that kinda image, and I just didn't feel like recapturing the video.
@Blue my English knowledge is just too shallow :|
what verbs did I have to use in first sentence "I wanted ..." instead of be and gets

Hi.

@Nathan tips hat
@Gajoo - replace 'be' with 'was'
>I wanted to make that picture in a way that my face be in the middle and back of my gets in the sides.

I wanted to make the picture in a way that my face was in the middle and the back of my head [at/in] the sides

Stack Exchange is posting my question?

11:04 AM
When you post in meta, it shows in the chat. :P
Also, you're right about that guy. Sounds more like he wants his own chat to his own specifications. :P
Also, Discourse looks interesting.
@Blue, I could totally see myself using it for my game if it's ready
I wonder if it parses links here...
Doesn't look like it. :(
I'm sure it'll come.

You can already fork it.
Run it on a VM

11:21 AM
@blue just note that creating a tag is much more easier.
you just ask a question and if you don't already have enough rep to create a new tag, just ask a user with higher rep to edit your question and add that tag

True, just wanted to see if it was out of the ordinary to have.

I think your example might result in too broad questions though.
I've seen plenty of questions closed because people want to know how something was done with comments from people about not having written the program/game.

11:43 AM
This is more for those with a game in mind and work done but stuck on a specific mechanic that they want to reverse-engineer.
Trying to shy away from the broad nature.
But most of them get tagged as too localised which is a bit BS atm

Q: Can I make a downloadable .exe app for my game if I make it in HTML5?

KrymmtI was going to make a MMORPG in HTML5 and javascript but I think I'm going to make a singelplayer first after all.. It would be nice to make the game in html5 anyway so the transition to making an mmorpg in future will be smoother. But I would like the game to be downloadable app which is then i...

I would make a comment about how worrying about people stealing your code is stupid. But I'm lazy...

@AlexM., I like all your diagrams. :P What tools do you use?

12:44 PM
I've used the built-in UML designer in Visual Studio to map my classes.

yEd is my favorite :D
it can do a lot of stuff, from simple graphs to network and UML diagrams

What's nice about the Visual Studio UML designer is the code updates to reflect changes you make which is pretty neat.

I also used the ugliest nodes in some of the diagrams I posted in the answer, yEd is a lot prettier

@AlexM. Damn straight

Thanks @AlexM., I'm sure yEd will be perfect to map out a techtree and the missions people can do.

12:48 PM
@William'MindWorX'Mariager yup, should do the job :)

Exactly
Just talk.

About 15 years ago invented some algorithm that's based on animal behavior. I jokey called it the "Algorithm of the 'shitting' hamster". The name just explains the algorithm quite easily: Imagine a hamster would explore your maze and on every field on the map it moves to, it shits. And well, now it stinks there! The hamster of course doesn't like that and always moves next field it can reach that stinks the least.
bahaha, I'll present this in the AI class next year
"I have used, the algorithm of the shitting hamster!"

it's not exactly worth it to try and study to get another 6/10, because then I'd get a 7/10 total

Q: Copyright infringement in game title

LuckyHorseCoinI'm a wanna-be indie developer, and I am working on my first flash game. But, before I even start with the code, I want to know this: When determining the title of my game, how can I decide if it is copyrighted or not? For example, at first I thought about "Into the Void" for the title. When I ...

I would be more preoccupied by the fact that there's a game called "The Void" out there
and not by that song thingy

@AlexM. LOL. I wanted my game to be called Void :(
but I don't care. I CAN CALL IT VOID()

2:44 PM
I'll call my hacking game ID:NULL or something
but Void is okay
the guys behind The Void (Ice Pick Lodge I believe) won't bother you
just stay away from the big dogs
so don't call your game Mass Effect or Dragon Age or anything

I'm calling my game Watch Dogs

Hi, could you help me with a quick question?

I am writing a sudoku solver that needs to solve sudokus with size 9x9, 16x16 and 25x25. I'd like to have an int SudokuWidth. And then load a specific testSudoku with the specified size by using something like this:

int sudokuWidth = 9;
int[,] currentSudoku = (int[,])typeof(Algoritme).GetField("Sudoku_test_" + sudokuWidth).

But i Don't know how to do this exactly. Any thoughts?
back in 10, have to move to another room

user4704
3:00 PM
O_O

user4704
That's a gross way to accomplish that.

user4704
Try:

int[,] currentSudoku = (int[,])typeof(Algoritme).GetField("Sudoku_test_" + sudokuWidth)
ouch

user4704
Dictionary<int, int[,]> m_testBoards; m_testBoard.Add(9, new int[9, 9]); // etc

user4704
then: if(m_testBoards.TryGetValue(sudokuWidth, out board)) ....

user4704
3:03 PM
better yet, wrap the board in a simple class instead of a bare int[,] too

all sorts of problems

user4704
Such as?

user4704
3:07 PM
There are only about four things I think you need to rename, depending.

it seems that the source files turn red because the references are group relative, not project relative
I can set project relative but it seems to have other ramifications

user4704
Probably has to do with how you added the files.

so I'm working through this
yeah

user4704
All my source is in Source/* but I have nested groups for organization in the .xcodeproj.

user4704
They don't reflect the filesystem structure; you want to make sure you don't use the "create folder reference" option and you don't have the "create groups for added items if needed" (or whatever) options set, I believe.

3:10 PM
I use create groups, but not copy
it looks like you have to pick either create groups or create folder reference

user4704
folder references are useful for reflecting the actual state of the filesystem; otherwise I would not use them.

right

user4704
(and it seems that folder reference content is not automatically included in a target, at least when you're talking about generated source code

ok

3:22 PM
full path still has the old folder name in it for the source files and .plist stuff

I wish there was a nice and easy way to do cross silverlight/.net libraries.
I know of a way. But it's messy.

sorry couldn't resist

@William'MindWorX'Mariager What would you use the library for?
It's kinda like me saying I want a jQuery/C# library for my game (literally)
isn't it?
Oh wait... no it's not. You want a library you can use for the client and server

why is it looking in Xcode.app suddenly? :(
I moved the project folder, that worked. I renamed the project, that worked except for a few errors in not finding files, so I used the relocate file button. no cookie.

@JohnMcDonald Exactly. :P Right now I have a linked file. Which actually works fine. But it's not very portable.
I guess I'm just being picky about it. :P :P

Hi guys, I asked a question like an hour ago, and then had to move. I have read the replies, an agree the thing i am trying to do is gross, but i was just wondering how it would work. Thanks a lot! great community, I can always find help here. Will implement it differently in the final code ;)

@user1103457 I don't know why you're using reflection here. What's wrong with: int[,] currentSudoku = Algoritme.GenerateSudoku(sudokuWidth); ?

Our last developer scored a fanatic job and sadly had to leave us.
w00t, fanatic job, what is that like a cultist?

I found an Arduino Uno in the garbage in our electronics workshop at school.
Knowing how little the other students respect school property and cost, it was likely just thrown out because their project ended.
Going to test it out now. :P

@William'MindWorX'Mariager Did you take it home and give it a hug saying "I will use you, code you and love you fer'eva'n'eva?"

Something like that... If it works. :P

I'm working on a small city-like simulation - I'm basically attempting to make the AI act as human-like as possible

4:47 PM
Going to plug it in now. If I go offline, you'll know why.

in the future, I'd like to make a real world simulation using robots based on arduino boards

Suddenly massive system melt down.
@AlexM. Want to see the bot I want??

sure

Well... I'm still here.
The on-lamp activated

That would be legit to have rolling around with you xD

4:49 PM
looks cool
but expensive

Not to mention... its upgradeable!
Its like having an epic mobile gaming PC!

I only need some cheap car-like robots, to do simple tasks like "chatting" (sound) to each other
the most complex thing they'd do is to pick up a broken robot and take it somewhere else

I want to code an AIIIIII :(

do it

I was working on some C# that would take voice input and allow you to talk to the computer.
Honestly Clever Script, for the win!
However I dont know how to operate CS and so I have to manually code the possible conversation.

4:57 PM
Looks like the arduino is working just fine.

Wants a Rasberry Pi

wish people would throw arduinos here too

I like how multipurpose the arduino is. I have a FEZ Cobra and FEZ Panda II running .NET MF which is awesome. But there isn't half the support that Arduino has.
Mostly I'd look at arduino tutorials and then adapt them to my FEZ device.

5:32 PM
Ardunio > Pi
(Disclaimer: Don't Rage)

yeah, my colleague has a print out of that in his cube, :)

That's a good one
even just the first line is funny

How can you not test your code?

@Gajoo I saw that like a month ago. :3 xD -- Still funny!

5:44 PM
shit, I thought nmaking the qt stuff is a good idea
it's been nmaking it for an hour
not over yet
I don't even know what the hell is actually happening

@CodeAssassin Make the harddisk of the website server a network drive, edit some critical stuff, and hit save 4:59 PM Friday afternoon. THAT is how hardcore people roll :D

Learn Qt they said. It will be fun they said.... DONT KILL ME then begged.

@CodeAssassin like writing 800 lines of code and publishing it as soon as it compiles,
I actually remember doing that once :P

@eBusiness Lol :P
@Gajoo Noway ._.

well that guys for whom I was developing that code actually passed his deadline.
so it was not that much important for that code to work
and I didn't have required stuff to test that code in the first place

5:53 PM
Quick Question: I am implementing Dijkstra's Algorithm in C# XNA and one of the steps are "Set Distance To Infinity". So... how should I do that. Just give it a value like 1000?
@Gajoo Legit.

give it the largest value that you know cannot be reached by the algorithm

e.g. if the maximum distance of a sequence is 1000, 1001 can be infinity

@AlexM. Thanks man ^_^b

you can also define a constant that's not necessarily big (can be negative if costs are positive)
and work according to it with checks (if sth == infinity)

5:57 PM
@CodeAssassin also if you can't make any assumption about maximum distance, you can allocate some extra memory and store infinity check inside that extra variable.
