@AndyD273 Use version control, add the update, check what breaks, and if it's more than you have time budget to fix, revert to before the update. Sometimes you have to judge how much time the update's bug fixes / performance improvements are worth.

12:53 PM
And be sure that your version control contains all files you need to recreate the project. Would be a shame to find out that the single file that Unity converted when upgrading the version was not included in your version control

1:06 PM
sometimes reading the Changelog or the equivalent before doing the update will let you know that some parts of a project could break. you can weigh in the pros/cons of doing the update.

For the latest iteration of the game, I just zipped up the whole game project directory before converting it. I do need to work on setting up version control, but my dev environment is kinda wonky so I'll get to it eventually.
All good advice

setting up git can be sometimes a bit tricky with unity when you already have a project, but it is not that hard.
Usually I tell people to use GitHub Desktop when they are new to git, don't like to use console or simply want to store/ backup it

1:23 PM
I'm currently playing around with Godot just to see how well it works. Also partly because when a company takes advantage of their users it makes me not trust them for a while, even if it likely won't ever effect me.

it is not really that powerful and is missing quite a few function but has a super simpy UI and you just need to click like 2 buttons
(I use the desktop one myself for Unity - totally enough when it is a hobby project)

That's a neat idea. I'll have to look into it it. Most of my GIT experience is in visual studio, which isn't bad, but I probably don't push changes often enough...

it has as a bonus a neat .gitignore file for unity that excludes all the files that dont need backup

1:41 PM
@AndyD273 "but my dev environment is kinda wonky" I think that's pretty common :P

Yeah, some day my kids will move out and I can have an office again

:P
I have a colleague who remote work and sometimes she does zoom meetings from the bedroom of her kids..

my son likes to steal/ take over the mic and says: Hello, Hello to the team :)

1:58 PM
Haha! Fortunately, my kids are at school when I have meetings so I don't experience this.

I remote work and the kids do remote school, and because I can't always trust them to stay on task they do school near me. If I have a meeting I tell them to take a break so they aren't talking in the background

They don't tell you all of this before you get kids..

Yeah, though I think the general entertainment value makes up for it all

my son is 3. Telling him one thing and expecting it gets followed or remembered 5min later are two different things

2:14 PM
Ah yeah. My youngest is 11, and I get a good 20 minutes of staying on task now...

2:44 PM
@AndyD273 20 minutes! Awesome! :) Must be hard.
Not being sarcastic at all
I've never had kids, so this has never been a problem for me.

3:01 PM
It's a bit of an exaggeration, but you figure out ways to keep them on task, and it does get better. Eldest is almost 16 and I can pretty much ignore her and she'll ask for help if she needs it.
They tend to reflect the work you put into them, so they are kind of a reflection of you, but with their own quirks and personality.
And when they aren't around it feels weird.
We're starting to make plans for our 20 year anniversary, and on one hand it would be nice to just go by ourselves and have the time alone, but on the other hand the idea of not taking the kids feels lesser
Like we'd be missing out or something
We'll probably end up booking an Alaskan cruise and getting them their own cabin together.

1 hour later…
4:15 PM
@AndyD273 I can totally relate to that!

2 hours later…
6:00 PM
that sounds like a good idea, taking them with you
but giving them their own space
