Q: Why didn't Fornell recognize Gibbs in "Yankee White"?

Mike EdenfieldThe first episode of NCIS starts out with an incident aboard Air Force One, where a Navy officer guarding the "nuclear football" is poisoned. While the Secret Service and FBI are arguing jurisdiction, Gibbs, Ducky, and Dinozzo board the plane and basically steal the crime scene. They pull this ...

@Walt When I read that, I suspected that it was him talking rubbish

@Walt @Cat @Ankit @Tom @DrR Sorry for bothering and pinging you; but I think you should answer that meta.SE rant just because. I don't want Movies & TV to have a seemingly bad picture in anyone's mind there. (Old meta hangers know better than to buy a rant, but the inexperienced ones, not so much)

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M What about DFTT, though? ;) Sure, I'd comment. But it seems Meta already sniffed him out. It's not that hard to see what's going on there.

Q: What is our 404 Image supposed to be of?

CatijaSo, I saw a question over on Meta.SE about the 404 page images and how they all relate to the subject of the site to some degree. It made me wonder, what's our 404 image... It's all Egyptian to me... or some other made-up language. Can anyone give some context for this image?

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Either that or it's Wingdings

Your 404 image thingy is CREEPY.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Thanks :)

Your sites have a significant amount of overlap; it is beneficial to both if y'all are familiar with each other's needs and able to work together.
BTW @Walt which two sites is Shog talking about?

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Someone said they'll invite everyone and someone else mentioned ice cream and it all kinda snowballed. Or should have.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I'm guessing us and the Science Fiction & Fantasy SE

@Walt MCU?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is an American media franchise and shared fictional universe that is centered on a series of superhero films, independently produced by Marvel Studios and based on characters that appear in publications by Marvel Comics. The franchise has expanded to include comic books, short films, and television series. The shared universe, much like the original Marvel Universe in comic books, was established by crossing over common plot elements, settings, cast, and characters. Clark Gregg has appeared the most in the franchise, portraying Phil Coulson, a character original...

@santiago Oh indeed, I don't want. But thanks for the info still.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Oh crap, I will, when I find the time. Thanks for the reminder. Great way to start a saturday. ;-(
But honestly. My answer to his question on Movies & TV Meta was extremely neutral and objective, although that question was already pretty ranty.

@TomCody What question?

Seriously what is wrong with this week? From assholes to exhausting discussions to constructive tag discussion that inadvertently go awry. I'm really fed up with this job this week. I can only hope the weekend improves.

What's with this week indeed.
Did all of SE suddenly turn into a drama show?
(We had a >100k'er on SO come and write a VLQ answer on Chemistry, then comment wars, meta rant etc.)

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M He already asked one question where he called me out as "coward" for asking him in chat to bring any possible concers to meta in an effort to constructively find a solution. Though that question was borderline abusive, I did my best to answer him and clear any confusions. But once it got flagged as offsensive, I also felt no need to hold back the other mods from deleting it.

Sounds like you had your mood ruined for some days, at least.

12:42 PM
@TomCody on the plus side, it's unlikey to be any worse than our weekend last weekend :\

@MikeEdenfield Indeed.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Should be easy do decipher from the recently past discussion in this room, for better or worse. ;-)

Don't worry. All of this will be gone, history, a painful memory. I sometimes run into jerks, on meta, here and there. But if they make you admit that you're frustrated, they've accomplished their trolling mission.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M half-drama only, but it was enough still.
Oh crap, I seriously don't know what he's actually talking about. I'm just glad that thing's already closed and on -9, which lets it fall beyond the front-page threshold.

On meta, front-page threshold is -8.
Guyses you have too much drama and too less meta voters, based on my observation.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Indeed. Though the drama has only come recently in utter chunks. But too few meta voters I won't deny.
But on the other hand it feels bad that this thing is closed, since as it stands it makes a ton of false accusation out of nowhere and there is no way to properly explain the situation not so much to him but to anyone reading the question. It just sheds a very bad light on our site this chatroom and me and people without context might not realize that he's just construing things out of nowhere.

@Walt @Cat @Ankit @Tom @DrR Sorry for bothering and pinging you; but I think you should answer that meta.SE rant just because. I don't want Movies & TV to have a seemingly bad picture in anyone's mind there. (Old meta hangers know better than to buy a rant, but the inexperienced ones, not so much)
Meta regs like me will ignore this rant; as they've seen many, many rants like this.

I've undeleted his meta question here and will link to it in a comment. I think it should say pretty much everything.

(In which the ranter was always the culprit)

@TomCody I am a new user, and I can see that this user is construing things out of nowhere. I was insulted by the same user in another room as well as this one, just ignored it after the last time.

@TomCody Thanks for the popcorn supply. ;)
> Harsh treatment of new users . . .
Worried
Well, @Tom you guys need to grow a thick skin. ;)
That's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa . . . aaaay better than some rants I've read.

I'm just worried about each and every of such strange posts, as I always feel outsiders might get a wrong impression of the site and its users and moderators. And there's anything I like the least, it's giving a wrong impression.

1:12 PM
Oh

Especially when such a thing is posted at a time where there's no chance to react as early as possible to it.

So this is about "being harsh to new users".

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M It was supposed to be, but then he somehow projected it onto himself, someone who was not treated harshly at all.

He doesn't know how to write a meta post. Nodding
@Tom the downvotes shouldn't be taken personally, I agree. But new users do and will take them as such.
What you need is a meta post requesting people to kindly comment when they downvote, VTC etc. if possible.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I know. It's also not that we're not aware of the fact that downvotes can have a negative impression on new users and that our chat can tend to rant about the evil ID questions a bit too much sometimes. Those aren't problems we're not aware of or don't consider as problems. That's why I invited him to bring it to meta if thinks it serious enough. His question, though, and what it was caused by are not an instance of this treating harshly though.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M And we do comment on those bad questions and ask for improvement in a friendly way.

1:19 PM
Indeed. He's a ranter, and he deserves whatever harsh treatment he'll get.
@TomCody ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ You most prolly do, but when some users start to whine, it's a bad sign.

OK, never mind..........keep talking about it. Have a good day.

And what was that? Meh, I'll definitely take a break now. Sorry to @inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M if your first visit to this site and its chatroom gave a very weird impression.

@TomCody It gave me the impression that this is a friendly site, with some trouble-makers. I don't think I got any negative impressions, except the one that you two mods are the main meta people and there aren't many people helping with meta work.

it is indeed a friendly site!

@santiago It misses a meta guy like me. ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ

@Tom I shouldn't blame you even if you're harsh to idiots.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M @TomCody Actually, with the new nav, all of the heavily downvoted questions seem to be visible. I can even see one that's -41
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I don't see why you think he was harsh...

I didn't say he is.
I say the idiot in that above question deserves harshness.
Quality vampires like that suck the quality off any site.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Um... "even if you're harsh to idiots"... implies that he is harsh to idiots.

Oh wait, right.
But I can't edit that.
I should've said even if you be harsh to idiots or something like that.
Blame SEDE for it.

@AnkitSharma It's a movi.
Not a movie.

@AnkitSharma Our helpful users have fixed it already, though. Now it doesn't need a downvote and not even a favourite.

Who fav a ID
Is it walt ;D
Anyways its happy time that i came after hours and have nothing to closed (ID ;})

@AnkitSharma I do it all the time with bad questions. If they're not bad enough to close, but not good (or non-bad) enough to be left unattended, I favourite them. Probably about ~180 of my ~330 favourites are ID, I guess.

5:27 PM
I use to do fav randomly when i was young here, now i rarely do that.
I think i need to do some unfav......someday
@TomCody now proved, downvoted featured question never comes in community bulletin

Indeed. Didn't know that.

People tend to fav because of the problems with the post.
I've never done that though.

Well, it gets unwieldy. I also favourite for other things, like genuine interest in the question and its answers, or because I want to answer it someday later, or just to read it later. But as long as SE doesn't support different favouriting categories it tends to get messy.
And some of my favourites are also closed questions which I think are salvagable if I ever find the time to revise them or bring them to meta (which is probably never).

Do you have favorite enhancer?

?_?

5:33 PM
It's a userscript in StackApps.

Hmm, I'm admittedly not a big fan of userscripts. I like to use the site in its intended way, I'm a bit of a purist in that regard. And I especially don't like meta answers that present userscripts as a solution since the might discourage a "proper" implementation of a feature.

I am quite disappointed with only 12 downvotes to the main meta rant ;D

Q: Favourites Enhancer: Tag favourites and add personal notes

ᔕᖺᘎᕊInspired by this question, I've made a userscript that allows you to tag favourites, and add personal notes to them (until SE implements this themselves!): To create favourites When you click on the favourite star of a question, a little popup comes up, asking you which tag you want to save thi...

Did he even read Tom's answer, before going mein meta

@AnkitSharma Well, let's just leave it where it is. I provided our meta question (which I undeleted for that) as proper context. I think we should just leave that thing be now.

5:36 PM
hmmm.....

@AnkitSharma Do I want to disappoint you?
Anyways, I disappoint you.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M on the main meta i used to got downvote more faster for the question than this post. So i am disappointed

That meta rant has four upvotes and 16 downvotes, not just 12 downvotes.
That means four people upvoted it.

I can't see that

Peeking at @Ankit's meta profile

5:39 PM
Not enough rep for that power

It comes at 1k.

Yeah i know but i usually just do reading on main meta.
So i might stuck with current rep there

Well I used to do that too.
I didn't ask or propose anything until I understood a lot.
That's why I don't have any negative scores on any of my posts.

@AnkitSharma He did, since he adressed the other answerer in a chat discussion that is deleted now (for reason you might be able to guess). But I think everything necessary was said on that thing and everyone who looks at it should understand the background of that thing enough. If he wants a reconciliation, I'd be more than happy for it, if not, then not. I think this chat has borne enough unpleasant discussion recently and I don't think dissecting his meta rant yet again brings us further.

Ok
Then change of topic.

5:42 PM
@Ankit I suggest reading the most downvoted questions on meta.
Once you get to understand what people on meta say, getting rep is really, really easy there.

Already time shortage
Better to be a reader for now

I think it's quite difficult to amass rep on Meta Stack Exchange, all the good feature proposals have already been made and any existing request already gets way better answers from others. I'm largely just voting there and rarely make a genuine support or bug request (usually about neglibigle or site-specific things not many care so much about).
But maybe I'm just not often enough there.

On the side note watched Once Upon a Time in Wonderland and i iked it more then main series.
They should stop ONce upon a time
And make new ones
Like Once upon a time in Oz
Like Once upon a time in Agrabah
etc

@TomCody Not really.

Add to this that I learned too late that bounties on Meta are useless to make the higher powers aware of some bug.

5:46 PM
That's true too though.
Well, FWIW I've gained 2k rep in meta the last month.

But yeah, especially on meta that vote-detail thing at 1000 rep would be quite useful.

For statistical purposes, which aren't useful at all.
Unless you wanna respond to a rant about Stack Overflow.

No useless either

It's just interesting to know, especially for seemingly controversial questions/answers, which might look far less controversial without the detailed votes.

There's an SEDE query for that.
The only really useful privilege coming from rep is 10k.

5:50 PM
Hmm, but maybe that favourites userscript might really be worth a try. Though, first I'd have to figure out how the hell a userscript even works. ;-)

Do you use Chrome or FF?

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Firefox. So those things are browser specific and not SE specific?
Does that mean they won't follow me across machines?

No, I wanted to see what I tell you.

Freddy vs Jason, Aliens vs Predator, Abbot & Costello meeting The Universal Monsters were all "after the fact" ploys at getting more m...

why close vote after a year

@AnkitSharma Don't know, it's borderline "listy", but I don't think we should be that strict with the "list" closing, I voted to "Leave Open" already anyway, so it should be out of the queue.

@TomCody K, but it's not any voodoo.
You'll learn it in no time. ;)

5:58 PM
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Yeah, I installed it. Now I'm reading up on the StackApps post.

@TomCody okay....

But from the looks of it I guess it is a machine-local thing?

Yes.
Javascript.

I do as much of my SE stuff at work as I do at home. I could of course install that thing there, too. But I'm not sure if those specific metadata the script apparently needs to store per-question are also saved in a non-localized way.

I think that data gets saved in your profile>>favorites.
Haven't checked though.
It should be, I mean when you click fav on your computer, it becomes a fav and when you look at it with your mobile, it's still a fav.

6:03 PM
Hmm, on closer read that script might nto be that great. It let's you tag and categorize the favourite, but it doesn't seem to allow sorting and searching them by those categories.
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M But they use additional data that SE doesn't have.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@TomCody Well, search StackApps. There might be things similar to it.
I disabled it because on chem it messed with Mathjax.
@Tom I currently run chatception, Autoreviewcomments and something for review I can't remember the name of.
Autoreviewcomments is a must-use.

6:18 PM
So, now I'll finally rewatch Streets of Fire, so I can return to my usual username in the near future.

Q: Need pointers for Low Quality Posts Review

PantherI have recently got access to Low Quality Posts Review. I tried to look into Meta for related questions or some guidelines on the site for what action to make when and what to look for in posts. However I am not able to get pointers. Can anyone help me with the same?

@Cat I wrote my first meta answer.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M You changed the default text from "whilst" to "while...

Blame the memory.

Ah... no worries... you might want to take a second to explain that "looks ok" does not mean that you think the content in the answer is correct... only that it's not one of those other things... the only solution for answers with incorrect content is downvotes.

Right. Let's write that in the pro tips.

Q: Can't remember name of movie about dinosaurs

user24426It was made in the 70s. It starts with a song played over the opening credits. Then a guy has a dinner with his girlfriend outdoors discussing his plans or something. A bit later, he and a few other people (who work for a company) time travel. When they're in the past, they see dinosuars. At the ...

Q: What's that music from TV adverts (UK) and film (global) with the theme of "outer space"

user3728501There is a classical piece of music which I often hear played in tv adverts or on tv or in film, typically when the scene is related to space. It has recently (August 2015) featured on UK TV in an advert. If I remember what the advert was for I'll add that info too. I have no idea what the song ...

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I'd be careful saying you should always comment when voting NAA etc... you should probably only do it if no one else did it first.

@Mike I thought they'd figure it out.

also, I can never remember when the system auto-comments for me and when it doesn't. :(

It does when you tell it to.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M you would think, but I see plenty of answer go through the LQ queue with 2 or 3 similar comments.

8:30 PM
@MikeEdenfield I think the only time I remember the auto comments showing up is on duplicate closures... and it auto-downvotes on spam flags...

I dunno.. the comments that @inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M recommends using are exactly like ones that get put on answers for me, and as far as I know I never told it to do that :)
but I'm lucky to see 4 items in the review queue in a week on SF&F so I always forget the details.
and the SO review queues scare me

@MikeEdenfield The responses he posted are from the auto-comments add-on thingy.

hrm.
I'm pretty sure I don't have any such add-on.
unless I installed it and forgot. lets look!
Those are also the exact words on the "delete reason" screen...

They may be used in both places.

I don't appear to have any add-ons loaded. I probably should.

8:37 PM
@Catija It doesn't even mean it's a qualitatively good answer. It can be the worst answer ever. All it means is "don't delete this". But that awfully confusing "Looks Ok" button is a pet-peeve of mine. I can't count how often I clicked "Skip" just because an answer was total crap and didn't "look ok", while still being a valid answer.
@MikeEdenfield You have to select the comment specifically from a dialog, I thought.
@MikeEdenfield I guess in this case people just didn't bother to look if there's already a comment (or the system didn't show them, which would be bad).

Tom bad answer != not an answer

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M Exactly. But that isn't really what "Looks Ok" says to the common man. A bad answer, simply doesn't look ok.

People deleting content they don't like or think is wrong is a recent pet peeve in Stack Overflow and its meta.

@TomCody yes, you select a "delete reason" and there's a comment to go with it. @inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M's meta post (which I agree with and upvoted) suggests you leave a comment, but the system will (sometimes? always?) leave a comment on your behalf. I can just never remember when it does/doesn't.
My point was that it's not always needed to leave your own comment, especially if you're going to leave the same standard text the system would have on your behalf.

@MikeEdenfield I think it always does, just not when you select "no comment necessary".

8:42 PM
@MikeEdenfield When you recommend deletion, there options like No comment needed.
If you check something else, you're adding a comment.

The system might remove the comment itself when the exact same one is already there. But then you also have cases where people write similar comments manually (coming not from the queue but from normal browsing) beforehand, and then the system doesn't know that a similar comment is already there.

I think the system doesn't remove identical comments.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M ok, then I might just be reading your answer wrong, which is entirely possible. It seems to me like you're recommending to this new reviewer that they leave a comment when they pick certain options... but the system will do it for you.

And they're not a problem anyway.
@MikeEdenfield The system will just add a template text. It's them that,s adding the comment.
Stupid autocorrect!!!

@TomCody Yeah... that's my point... it's a stupid term.

8:47 PM
K guys, I'm sleeping, ping me and ask me about VLQ queue. But I think @Cat here knows more than me and can link you to something in meta.SE.

@Catija Well, in the past it even was "Looks Good", I think.

@Catija A lot of wording in SE is stupid.

@TomCody I skip tons of questions on SO because I'm not even smart enough to figure out if what they're saying is trying to be an answer or not.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M That must be why I was confused... I always opt for "no comment needed"...

@MikeEdenfield I haven't actively been on SO for ages. Approximately since the time I signed my life to some other stupid SE site, I guess.

8:49 PM
@MikeEdenfield And they're sometimes very, very well-disguised spam.
OK I'm sleeping. G'night guys!

But even before that I think I only used the review features of SO to get some of those cool badges. ;-)
(And those were the times when the flag count wasn't an integer number but some weird formula where a single declined flag threw you back for myriads of helpful flags, back then the Marshal badge was really worth something. Oh my, I feel old.)
@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M G'night.

Q: How are Streets of Fire's end credits structured so unusually (or are they)?

Tom CodyIt was only recently that I conciously noticed that Streets of Fire employs quite an unusual structure for its end credits. When the movie ends, first the cast list scrolls over a view of the last scene, then it fades to black and the rest of the credits roll, beginning with the list of songs, th...

@Catija "I've seen every episode of NCIS and had no clue it was spun off from JAG... which I've never seen at all." - Wuuut? Seriously, cancel that NCIS stuff and bring back JAG instead!
