Hi there, I've noticed you are posting links to xSQL as answers to a lot of questions recently. Are you affiliated in any way? If so we appreciate disclosure. — Tom V 11 secs ago

I'd say yes ... pragmaticworks.com/Products - his profile says he works for them

@Phil I don't see xSQL there, nor does the xSQL about us page say anything about pragmaticworks

Hmm, weird how there are two companies in the same space using xSOMETHING names :-) I'd be a bit grumpy about that if I was one of the vendors ;-)

Q: Documentation beta

PhilI see that the Documentation Beta is now live. Is this going to get pushed to DBA.se at any point, or is it going to only live on Stack Overflow?

I wonder if we could do this unofficially on main
It wouldn't have the bells and whistles of the documentation site, but the format is not that different
It would need a) a tag and b) some rules and policing
what do you reckon @Phil?

Doable, certainly. Have definitive reference questions?

The question would be the topic, and perhaps have the other bits in it like syntax, remarks etc
I'm not sure whether or not we have enough active contributors here, but I just can't see SO doing a good enough job of database documentation

Indeedy

Also, if they want to add documentation to other sites at some point they'll run into the same issue with dupes and people not really knowing where to look

@TomV they will

A: Documentation beta

Jack DouglasHow do people feel about doing this unofficially on main? It wouldn't have the bells and whistles of the documentation site, but the 'multiple examples sorted by votes' format is not that different from the normal Q&A here. We could tag all the topics documentation and have an agreed template f...

I doubt they will roll it out officially to other sites for several years at best
but if we produce something workable here with superior content, we might end up at the front of the queue

10:00 AM
@JackDouglas I always considered questions that could be answered from the manual somewhat off-topic – so as to avoid duplicating the manual. And now you seem to be actually suggesting just that :)

@AndriyM :)
although they call it documentation I see it a complementary to official docs I think

I see the question tagged with you is not tagged with you anymore
The value won't change, but is not known when writing the script. I could probably hardcode a pre-generated UUID instead of relying on the automatically generated one, but I'm wondering if there is a solution to this problem for future reference. — Mark K Cowan 8 mins ago

was it at least a pivot question?

sounds weird, a certain UUID as default
@bluefeet it was

Ooops. http://dba.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/bluefeet
unfortunately, I don't have the link to the Q itself
it can possibly be extracted from the edit history on data.SE

1:06 PM
@AndriyM One could take that view if the manuals were better written. There's plenty of room for better documentation of many aspects of SQL Server or Oracle. Or SSAS. Or MySQL ...

@Phil Dr. @Phil to the rescue

@Phil I've seen that. As mentioned here by Kevin before we can even think about putting docs on other sites, we need to make sure it's working well on SO.
But I do agree that DBA is a good fit for it.

@bluefeet do you think the team would resist the idea of DBA doing it informally?
with a view to eventual migration if/when that option exists

@JackDouglas I guess I'm not sure how you'll be able to do it informally. And I'm not sure how migration would be possible... meaning the technical difficulties in doing that.
I'm just back from vacation today and am wading through about a million things, so it might take me a bit to get up to speed on all the docs and any plans on down the road (especially because I know the team is swamped right now).

1:17 PM
@bluefeet oh cool, did you have a good time?

@JackDouglas Yes it was very fun, not relaxing but fun and we saw a ton of stuff.

"fun, not relaxing" I've had holidays like that :)

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Fair point. My concern is some people might not see a difference between a question that can actually be answered from an existing manual and one that mirrors an existing manual.

how hurtful
;-)

@Lamak The crappy posts today have been hurtful to my rep with all that downvoting :)

@TomV another one from the same person:
Please update this post to disclose your affiliation with that company / product. — srutzky 3 mins ago

I flagged as "obsolete and check his other answers" or something
@srutzky he only advertises his product in all his answers if you check his profile

Random question: is anyone participating in the SO Docs?

@TomV ah, ok...I wasn't sure if I was supposed to flag or post a comment like that..

7:11 PM
The SQL/database specific tags could use some DBA love.

@bluefeet I committed to dynamics yes

@bluefeet I...tried

@bluefeet But I'm not sure what the microsoft dynamics tag is going to be about, it's a name for the entire business (erp, crm, ...) line
I only really know one product out of the entire portfolio

@Lamak tried?

@bluefeet I mean, I posted some edits, one if which was approved, the other rejected because another pending edit (which was wrong) conflicted with mine
overall, kinda bothersome
and too much information to go through
and a lot of pending edits

7:14 PM
@bluefeet I didn't read all of the announcements and posts since I just got back from vacation, but what is the thing with the beta/commit stuff (link only answer is OK)

which make the whole thing too much of a bother

@TomV I'm not sure I understand what you are asking

@bluefeet how are things after your vacation?, I imagine that docs is gonna take a lot of SE's staff time

@Lamak I'm severely behind and trying to catch up after a week off. Lots happened last week.

7:17 PM
> This is the staging area for microsoft-dynamics Documentation. Once there are 5 committers, the community will be able to document all microsoft-dynamics topics.

@TomV 5 users need to commit to the tag before documentation can be created.

I'm unclear as to why there is a "dynamics crm" and "microsoft dynamics" tag, the former is a product, the latter a product line

@bluefeet I thought so. Anyway, I did try to be useful in docs, but it really show that's a beta, and the rep thing doesn't feel right to me
the way edits are approved either

I don't know much about "dynamics CRM" but I do have something to say about "dynamics AX" for example
And if I committed, but the tag goes in a direction of the line I don't know anything about, am I expected to be active anyway simply for committing?

@TomV you should commit for life, man

7:22 PM
@Lamak Yes and then they introduce a paywall/paysystem like expert sex change

@TomV no, committing doesn't mean you have to be active in it. But if you don't think the microsoft-dynamics is a good tag to document, then I wouldn't commit to it.

@bluefeet I would prefer a dynamics-crm, dynamics-nav, dynamics-gp and dynamics-ax tag for the separate products

@TomV then don't commit to the other one
committing to it means it should be documented
unless there are broad things that apply to all of the products that would/should be documented in the microsoft-dynamics docs

@bluefeet thing is, there wasn't a crm specific tag when I committed (I think) and since all those products have low interest on main I thought the generic tag might be the way to go, but that may have changed
@srutzky me neither

@TomV indeed
Where are all of our mods? Or regulars? Or has the quality just plummeted on here?
@bluefeet I don't want to. I know I'll be fighting with too many people that aren't experts. I'll concentrate on DBA.se

7:37 PM
@Phil :(

@bluefeet I know the people here, that's the biggest factor
I guess if we all made a concerted effort to make database centric docs "ours", I'd be in
2
Now I hate myself for putting a word in quotation marks :D

It's a shame though because there is a lot of knowledge on DBA that could be useful in docs.

@bluefeet maybe when it's out of beta?. I mean, there's so many little things with it now. I made an edit that was approved, it gave me some rep, but then I received rep for every upvote to the topic, that's just not right
and the review system for it to be approved
the swarm of "hello world" topics
the pending edits....I don't know

@Lamak the rep stuff is here to stay even when it gets out of beta.

@bluefeet any feedback from the other verticals? serverfault etc?

7:47 PM
@Phil on what?

@bluefeet I know, but I mean...I should get rep for having an edit approved, but +10 for every upvote on that topic?, that's just too much
to get that in SO I have to actually think of an answer

@Lamak well they adjusted the thresholds and I believe we are still monitoring things. It's beta and that stuff could potentially change (don't hold me to that though).
First and foremost - we are adjusting the rep rewards as we speak. This is a beta. Stack Overflow Q&A had reputation rewards adjusted over the years (question upvotes got reduced from 10 to 5, question downvotes stopped costing reputation, etc). As much as I'd love to think that we'd get this right on day 1, that's ... unlikely. :)

We're deploying changes now that reduce reputation awarded for edits from 10 to 5. We are also raising the thresholds for what a "substantive edit" is.
They are actively making changes to docs while it's in beta.

@bluefeet I won't, don't worry ;-). Still think that SE should take away that rep that I got for it and leave only the rep gained for having my edit approved

@Lamak you're far too nice for wanting to give back rep.

@bluefeet nah, it just doesn't feel right to me

8:03 PM
@bluefeet on documentation

@Phil well several other sites have requested to get docs.

A: Documentation beta

PopsFor the immediate and medium-term future, Documentation will be a Stack Overflow exclusive. For the distant future (as in, multiple years down the line at the earliest), well... we don't have solid plans to expand it beyond SO, but it's early enough that anything is theoretically possible.

Hi, I edited the post to disclose the affiliation. Thanks for the heads up :) @TomV — Endi Zhupani 6 hours ago

@Lamak considering this has been in public beta for less than a week it's far too early to consider porting it to other sites. We want to know this works on SO before even thinking about putting it on other sites. Like I said earlier, I think DBA is a good fit for it but it won't happen for a bit.

It does not. Never. — dezso 8 hours ago

@bluefeet yeah, I was just pointing to the "multiple years at the earliest"

8:34 PM
@Lamak more like 6-8 somethings

They might mean the "Broken Pipe" error. But the answer is lousy.

it's all a guess at this point @Lamak

yeah, figured. But I really hope documentation goes well

@bluefeet I'd have put it into beta on a SE site first to iron out the wrinkles
Hindsight

It has been in private beta for months now and the team fixed a ton of stuff during that time.
Many of the bugs that have popped up since the launch didn't appear

8:54 PM
Always the case though. We've all been there :)

9:06 PM
It's surprising what users can do, and we're terrible as developers. We never test all of the out of the ordinary

see @Lamak it could change :P
The substantive-edit requirement is already in place, although the bar is fairly arbitrary - need more data to put it in the right place, but expect that to happen. Caps of some sort will almost certainly happen eventually too. Still sez "beta" in the name, so expect whatever rep you earn will be subject to adjustment at some point. — Shog9 ♦ 3 mins ago

Q: stored procedure logic,data flow visualization tool

user1716729I have a very poorly written stored procedure with cursors, if else etc. Is there any toll available to visualise the logic and data flow? Thanks

I don't need a sophisticated machine learning model, psychic powers or a lucky 8-ball to suspect this user has a prior undisclosed affiliation.

@bluefeet ah, nice, I reaaaaally expect for SE to take away the rep I got on upvotes for a topic

@Lamak it might happen... eventually

The tool was 'released' on 17 July 2016 and has poorly worded testimonials from 'Jason Lee Miller' - srsly?

@swasheck heh heh, could be worse, you could be on Tableau. Or SQL 2k SSRS.
Bag o' spanners

@wBob ... not sure that'd be worse, at this point
authentication is all kinds of messed up

@swasheck haven't used it, sounds bad. Done a fair bit with Power BI though, which is ok. What have they done to auth. in 2016?

@wBob not sure. dialog box pops up to login. there are quite a few things. maybe it's us and all of our frickin hops
who knows?

@swasheck hoporific. Go SQL auth. just to be safe ; )
One jests, one jests, but could be used as diagnostic tool.

@Phil Added the tag in revision 2 for some reason
Presumably for teh lulz
