A: When to Redis? When to MongoDB?

Gabe RainbowRedis. Let’s say you’ve written a site in php; for whatever reason, it becomes popular and it’s ahead of its time or has porno on it. You realize this php is so freaking slow, "I’m gonna lose my fans because they simply won’t wait 10 seconds for a page." You have a sudden realization that a web p...

What could be reasons for getting the error `Invalid object name'#temptable'` immediately after running
CREATE TABLE #temptable
INSERT INTO #temptable....
No dynamic SQL

A hard to spot typo?

No changes in the procedure recently

out of space?

Possible memory issues? But I would have expected a failure on the CREATE?
Basically it seems to be the same issue as this guy sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic1134908-360-1.aspx

8:32 AM
I've managed to produce a similar issue, not an invalid table name but invalid column name. However, maybe it's the same thing and the error message just depends on the version?
FWIW, here's my script:
CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.tmptest
AS
CREATE TABLE #test (ID int);
INSERT INTO #test (ID) VALUES (1), (2);
SELECT * FROM #test;
GO
CREATE TABLE #test (Value xml);
EXECUTE dbo.tmptest;
GO
DROP TABLE #test;
GO
DROP PROCEDURE dbo.tmptest;
GO
Basically, the problem in this case happens when a temporary table by the same name exists when the SP is invoked
(by the same name but with a different structure, of course)
Hmm, looks like I was too hasty. Apparently those were compile-time errors

8:58 AM
Seems like it was an error further up that was just causing misleading error messages

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells nice
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells how are you? how's your corazon?

9:46 AM
The elegance of SQL, looks so pretty when you draw it ...

@Darth_Wardy the picture oversimplifies joins but it's helpful

I know ... it was just a nice way of "getting started with joins" for those that don't know them well
makes the whole concept look really elegant and simple even though it actually quite complex

@Darth_Wardy I had a plan to make a post but haven't found the time to draw the pictures I have in mind.

12:46 PM
recently seen: "Required By: ASAP Tomorrow - as time permits" WHICH IS IT!!!
@Darth_Wardy this page has a good downloadable poster
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells love it! That's what they meant by "He"!
AND TO THINK, ALL THIS TIME IT WAS A MISUNDERSTANDING!
lol

@MaxVernon so INNER JOIN, INTERSECT, semijoin and CROSS APPLY all have the same image?
so all 4 do the same thing, right?

@ypercubeᵀᴹ yah, I never said it was perfect, lol.
it's hard to show the details in an image
at least there are some explanations

@ypercubeᵀᴹ Exactly my issue with those representations. They're misleading as much as helpful.

has anyone used Remus' DBHistory yet?
I got an invite, but haven't been able to find time to set it up :-(

I have a stupid question that I'm sure is too trivial for the site: In "recently expensive queries" on sql-server ssms activity monitor, I've got a query should ~100 executions and >10 million logical reads. does that really mean the db engine has trawled through ~80gb of data for that query?

1:46 PM
@MaxVernon that's really good

Q: Do men or women have more brothers?

laymanDo men or women have more brothers? I think women have more as no man can be his own brother. But how one can prove it rigorously? I am going to suggest some reasonable background assumptions: There are a large number of individuals, of whom half are men and half are women. The individuals ...

@TZHX Almost certainly not. I don't recall if Activity Monitor counts logical reads across all executions (100 x 10m = 1g reads) but even if it does, that doesn't mean SQL Server read the whole 8KB page each time it was touched in memory (which is what logical reads counts). Things like nested loops joins mean the same pages get touched over and over again, often to test and return one row each time.
@ypercubeᵀᴹ That's been floating around the HNQ for a few days. Still haven't clicked it.

@ypercubeᵀᴹ that answer is insane

@Darth_Wardy notwithstanding the points made by @ypercubeᵀᴹ

@Lamak which one of them?

@ypercubeᵀᴹ the top one. And I meant "insanely well thought"

2:34 PM
@Lamak TOP with what ORDER BY?

@PaulWhite does this question really needs bounty, I mean I think OP is just misreading the result. I guess difference is aptly mentioned in BOL dba.stackexchange.com/questions/139214/…

Insane DESC obv.
@Shanky I added a bounty to draw attention because it was unanswered. It still has no answers. People must not like rep any more.

@ypercubeᵀᴹ (upvotes-downvotes) DESC

The question also has two upvotes, no downvotes, and no VtCs, so it cannot be a bad question.

@PaulWhite OK I have posted two comments and think that its just that OP has not read BOL can you check if I am thinking correct

2:41 PM
@Lamak his second answer is interesting. Reading about linearity of expectation now. Mind blown.

@PaulWhite Thank you. :)

@Shanky I'll try to find time later (no promises, I am very busy just now). The point of adding the bounty was so that other people would answer. I know I could answer it if I read everything there, check the documentation, and do some tests ... but that's exactly what I was avoiding.

I really wish I could read math more effectively. I really wish math teachers in grade school understood how important math is.

@PaulWhite no worries ...

@MaxVernon I think they do understand that. However they have trouble getting children to understand why it's important.
I've actually been thinking about taking some online math classes. My skills aren't exactly up to par.

@Zane probably to some extent. I remember being very interested in math but getting terribly bored by teachers that didn't really understand numbers. They tend(ed?) to get very hung up on the procedural method of arriving at an answer without actually realizing there are a number of ways to get there.

Whatup folks? queue lots of "well there he is" and "how's the good life where you ignore us" messages

@jcolebrand How's the good life? :)

The life is good, man, I tell you what.

@jcolebrand Enjoyed ignoring us much? ;)

Well, there he is!

@AndriyM I knew that was gonna happen :p

7:32 PM
it's the missing mod

@bluefeet I'll have you know my tab stays open daily weekdays ;-)
So, we are hiring a Data Architect ... anyone got a good list of questions/resource to help narrow down the search? I feel like I would know a good candidate if I interview one, but I wouldn't mind some good resources to help me dig a little deeper. I can share the list I have currently if anyone wants to see it.
