God morgon!

9:20 AM
The other day I discovered that I am working in a building colloquially knows as 'the dick' in certain circles.
I wonder why?
They even made it asymmetrical ...

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells it reminds me more of a flipped bird, without the first and fifth fingers

@dezso Yes, I think it looks a bit like that too.

11:09 AM
otherwise, it looks very 80s
from the drawing, at least

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells it's quite recent then

@dezso According to orms.co.uk/work/20-gracechurch-street it was built in the early 1990s and refurbished in 2009.

I see
then my estimation was not that far off
and they changed it quite a bit

Just down the road from me

Perhaps we should do something involving the consumption of alcoholic beverages at some point.

I'll never turn down an alcoholic beverage!

@MarkSinkinson Sounds like a plan. When suits for you?

2:04 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells I'm off on holiday at the end of July..but free most evenings

Is it me, or this really does not make any sense (apart from being a rant)?
We are dealing with hacking Oracle Middleware platform. It has partitioning as a recommended (not required feature). There are bzillion problems with it. I just tried to save us some money this way. I think oracle made it crap (the db model sickens me) so that you have to buy partitioning. Oh well at least i tried — kosta5 37 mins ago

@dezso Comment looks like rant.
And as you said, 2M rows is not big.
> The data is so big that undo tablespace dies...
|I wonder how wide is the table or what else this tablespace has.

2:52 PM
Every move toward SharePoint integration is a massive mistake.

@ypercube I don't know much about Oracle, but isn't the undo tablespace cleaned up periodically?

@Zane I walked into a client where the previous consultants had talked them (a 100-person company with no full-time IT staff) into purchasing Sharepoint 2013 on-prem and running it on some Azure VMs. They use SharePoint only for the BI components and are perfectly fine with their data being in the cloud. :-(

@mmarie yikes.

Yep, and they specifically expressed that they need mobile BI so I still need to move them to Power BI anyway. :-(

:22360076 Still shows euros. If you change /en-gb/ to en-us, it shows dollars

3:05 PM
:22360076 Have you tried the "en-us"?: products.office.com/en-us/compare-microsoft-office-products

@mmarie You might remind them:

well there you go

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells For them it's a matter of maintenance overhead. There is way less maintenance in Power BI than there is for SharePoint on-prem, especially when they aren't using half of the features.
So it's really more SaaS vs IaaS
They don't have a DBA

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells I just spit coffee all over my monitor.

@Zane Did you decide to do Denver or KC?

3:08 PM
@Zane because you missed the same thing yesterday ;)

@mmarie I'm trying to see if I can do both.

:-)
well, you can have free lodging in KC with me or Bill. This time we are probably equally close to the venue since we moved it to Rockhurst.

It's more of a PTO/DogSitting concern.

But the hotel is supposed to be only $100 a night. Whatever you do, I hope your rental car works out better this year.

@mmarie I would just drive my normal car.

3:10 PM
ah. If your dog promises not to pee in my house he can come, too.
my dog will probably go to his other house.

I don't have a shitbox dodge anymore. I've got a TDI so driving is no biggy.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells forwarded to our "Technology Advisory Group"

I could maybe swing them both. I'd love to submit but I just am not sure if it's a great idea.
Although I'm missing SQL Sat Minneapolis so I should make up for it somehow.

3:26 PM
@Zane part of me wants to tell you to submit for denver because you've already done KC ... but if i'm honest, this wont be our best venue
i'm kinda pissed about it

@swasheck where are you having it this year?

somewhere in aurora
the venue looks nice enough, i just dont like the area

what kind of venue?

@swasheck You can buy the stickers. I'd really like to go to a cloud computing conference and just hand them out to everyone.

@mmarie The Summit Event Center
it's a nice venue ... and pretty cheap
but the area is one with which i'm not too familiar, but from what i can tell and from what i do know ... there's nothing to do there

3:28 PM
@swasheck well, you can be glad you guys have graduated to an event center. Speaking in the church gym one year was not my favorite.

so i'm kinda checked out
@mmarie i'd endure the church for the sake of being in the area, though :)
i really wanted the venue to be closer to my house ... breckenridge brewery just opened a new place and i wanted afterparty/speaker dinner there

@swasheck Ah. Your after parties haven't always been close to the event venue. Last year was though.
Well, we don't know what our venue will be like exactly. It's a brand new building that is being built on the campus. I'm not sure it's finished yet.
but hopefully that means it will be very nice.

3:49 PM
No i wasnt familliar with it away from home and wanted to save the research time. Found the answer there thank you very much — user69153 15 mins ago
you are very welcome

4:01 PM
@swasheck Venue isn't that big of a sticking point
@mmarie Your previous venue was amazing!

@Zane Yeah, but they were not fun to work with. We were worried the week before that we wouldn't have enough rooms. They started charging us for things that they said were free int he past. And they really weren't in an interesting part of town.
This time, we are closer to the heart of the city, closer to BBQ crawl restaurants and hotels, and after party venues.
and we still get the venue for free because we are helping them advertise their data science programs.

@dezso We are glad you googled it for us ;)

4:19 PM
@mmarie Oh I know why you changed but good lord it was cool.

@ypercube NB I'm also away from home

These tenant check firms are a pain in the ass in UK ...
The only thing they haven't asked for is my grandma's tax returns. Yet.

5:17 PM
Just found a recorded Brent Ozar session: How SQL Server engine thinks

5:53 PM
I've seen that one.

6:03 PM
@ypercube is there such a thing?
we have a landlord, who comes personally when necessary and then we talk about birding

@dezso Yes, there is.
If it's just a landlord, it's ok. But estate agencies force you to pas through some other agency check.

are they after if you are able to pay?
does this happen before signing a contract?

Yes, I guess they check criminal records, income, loans history, etc
Yes, before.

ah

But ti's really absurd how much info they requite

6:06 PM
it's called SchuFa here, but it's mostly about liquidity
agencies like it very much
with persons it depends (for me it was enough to present a work contract with a number in it)

6:39 PM
This days headheache continues to be brought to you by SharePoint.
SharePoint it's almost like a website!

except a lot worse

I was coming up with a sales pitch for them.
SharePoint. It's a website without any of the development time...or functionality.
We would be infinately better off if we were using wordpress.wellsfargo.com
Well I've decided I'm definately going to apply for Denver and I will probably do KC as well since I can't do Minneapolis

7:23 PM
@Zane why can't you do Minneapolis?

I had tickets to a convention the exact same day.

EXACT same day

oh. sad

It was announced way before SQL Sat MSP was announced.

well, that's ok. Their loss is KC's gain. :-)

7:36 PM
I might submit to speak but I'd have to like bounce out speak and then leave which seems weird so I probably won't

8:14 PM
A nice description of the Internet
71
A: What is the first reference to an internet of computers in sci-fi?

BroklyniteI've read The Machine Stops a few times, and I don't think it's quite similar enough to the internet. There, the humans live within a giant machine. But the internet is a network of machines. For something a little closer, I think, I'd go with Murray Leinster's "A Logic Named Joe." from March 194...

> Thus in one story we have a computerized network, a network virus, network security, computers in the home, and internet porn. I can't think of a better example of the internet.
