Hello all, anyone in the mood for a SQL Server 2008 R2 Clustering question?

The answer is upgrade
:-)

hah
even if I wanted to, I'd still have to remove 2008 R2

napalm

DBAs, sigh

It's really the only supported way

5:06 PM
could I uninstall a node with a higher install version?
nope, that is not possible

Are you trying to remove a node from the cluster? Or remove an instance?

actually, I need to remove an instance from a cluster

You should be able to remove the node from the cluster, then nuke SQL, then join the node back
You need to remove the node cleanly, e.g. remove all dependencies and associations with any SQL services/instances running on that node in FCM
sqlha.com might have a post or two about this

when you say remove it cleanly, you are referring to remove node from maintenance tab in the install?

@CraigEfrein no, I am talking about removing the node from the cluster, using Failover Cluster Manager

5:12 PM
I don't need to remove the node, just need to remove one instance

How many instances are using that node?

so the node stays, and the other sql server instance stays
two so far
I want to keep one and remove the newest instance
or rename the instance because it has the wrong instance name
but renaming the instance is probably more complicated

I don't know if there's a clean way to do that without removing the node (meaning fail all active instances on that machine to other nodes). It is just temporary, you can add the node back once you've removed the instance you don't want.
@CraigEfrein you can't rename an instance.

so that would mean I'd need to add another node to the instance

Cluster or not, doesn't matter, there may be some really hacky ways to get away with it, but they'll leave you unsupported and probably broken in not-immediately-obvious ways'
@CraigEfrein Why? You can have a single-node cluster (again, temporarily)

5:15 PM
no its a two node cluster
one instance is setup correctly, the other has the wrong name

Ok. I have a session to go to. Good luck.

ciao

@Zane I just stopped laughing at this suggestion. $5K. Ha.
