@swasheck XML is limited to 128 levels of nesting. When a plan exceeds that, you get that error message.

@Paul, since you're here, perhaps you could interject
Can you give specific examples what I have interpreted incorrectly? I have given four blog posts with examples of what I am discussing. A couple of cavalier comments don't help at all. My opening statement asked if anyone knew definitively of what I was discussing. Your sqlskills blog wasn't related. If you don't have anything meaningful to add to the discussion, please refrain. — MJM 25 secs ago

Sure. I'll have a lookie.

Fun stuff huh?
Welcome to the new Stack Overflow

Yes very fun.

1:16 AM
I hope you are not writing a novel for this person

No. I'm struggling to think what to say, if anything. I'm entirely sure what he's asking, beyond the vagueness of "is there anything special in 2012".

Seems allergic to critical thinking
"I'm getting different behavior, so it must be the version."
"Nothing else could possibly make sense. Now, someone pat me on the back and tell me I'm right."

For example, he doesn't provide plans for his "samples". He says scans are "bad behaviour:" but I'd expect both those queries to scan, right?

I'm betting on 2012 the first time he ran the query he got a seek because he passed in a very selective year.
But yeah, he doesn't define what exactly 2012 does better.

But he says the plans and perf stats are the same for both. That's what is confusing me.
No specific improvements in 2012 that I am aware of, though it's hard to be sure what you're asking exactly. Can you share execution plans for the two sample queries in your question? That should make the context of your statements clearer. — Paul White 45 secs ago
Anyway ^ Leaving it at that for the moment.

1:23 AM
I think he's ambiguous but he's saying he has the OR version on both versions, and on 2012 it optimizes like the second query
Which would make sense if he passed in a selective year the first time he ran the OR version on 2012.
I don't know why he's read Bart's blog post on parameter sniffing but completely waving away parameter sniffing as having anything to do with this.

It is pretty unclear as written. Yet 3 up votes.

Well he's not getting an answer from me. Obviously.
:-)
Even if he does clean up the question and apologize for out-abrasive-ing me

Ha :)

Well, hockey to watch, my friend. I just updated all of your isolation series posts to just link to the index post instead of that heinous breadcrumb thing. This will make Thursday's update easier - just add an entry to the index. :-)

Oh cool. Enjoy the game!

Maybe I'll do some reading on definitive SQL Server 2012 behaviors so I can finally contribute something meaningful while trying to help others understand their problems. :-)

Losing patience rapidly with this guy.
Your question isn't clear whether both queries produce a scan, a seek or something else - or otherwise how they differ. We need these details to answer your question. If you are unable to provide a clear question with the details needed to answer it, we will likely have to close it. — Paul White 1 min ago

Q: Do SQL Server 2012 stored procedures handle optional parameters better?

@PaulWhite that'd be ... better ... because i could do something about it. as it stands, we're forced into backup/restore from NAS

Q: The cost of left out join versus a select

KdgDevI'm currently working with Ebean for database abstraction. My test database is Postgresql 9.3 I turned on logging for the SQL queries to test some code behavior. So, assume 2 tables, OneToMany relation. In the code, this will have fields on the objects to represent it. So for instance, class A...

@MJM I think you've misinterpreted again. It's not that nobody knows the answer - you've been given an answer multiple times, but you've brushed us all away, telling us our comments are cavalier and we're not contributing anything meaningful to the discussion. Don't be surprised that you're not getting the best responses. — Aaron Bertrand ♦ 33 secs ago
Hey I thought I was being pretty nice there :-)
Anyway since he refuses to fix the question (the problem is with everyone responding, of course), it is of little use to anyone, so I am ultimately going to delete it.

Ha! Yes it is just a waste of space as it is.
Still no answers. In the end, I was simply asking whether someone knew if the SQL Server 2012 engine handled optional parameters differently than previous versions. Instead I have two "authorities" telling me I don't know what I'm reading or doing. If you don't know the answer, it is OK. — MJM 38 mins ago
^ db ^

It's quite unfair that you're accusing people of not knowing the answer - it has been provided multiple times. No, SQL Server 2012 did not change the way it handles this query pattern. You're getting a different plan for other, more obvious reasons. Since you refuse to acknowledge this, are lashing out at all of us trying to help you, and won't update the question as you've been asked multiple times, I'm going to be forced to simply delete it. — Aaron Bertrand ♦ 11 secs ago

The only reason I can think of to not post the details asked for, is that would reveal his misconceptions (which he doesn't suffer from). Lame.

@bluefeet I'm confused by this
Damnit @hairboat now I want marshmallow fluff and they don’t sell it anywhere in Phx
how do they not sell marshmallow fluff in Phoenix?

@mmarie I have to order it online if I want/need some

How is that possible? Is there a law or something?

There should be

or is there no market for it? or is it just that there is an imposter product that has a monopoly?

@Zane what's that?

The problem with the other programs I was getting into is they were way too hardcore.
@bluefeet Been doing the stuff on darebee and I changed my diet a bit.

Well I'm not a nutty crossfitter. I'm what you can say a average to below-average crossfitter. I go, lift, work hard - I'm typically at the back of the pack but I'm there
using that along with changing my diet (flexible dieting), I'm down 15+ lbs in 3 months

I changed my diet to primarily be meat, fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, and dairy(Primarily milk and low fat yogurt.).
Although sometime before I bike in I'll have some Peanut Butter toast.
I also added push ups to my regular routine. Essentially I do them throughout the day to stay at least slightly active while at work.
Between that and the biking I'm starting to feel pretty good.
Okay I'm off the the DMV.

I've got a really weird issue that I've run into. We are altering a table to add a natural PK, once we do that we've got a few queries that join to the table and others which start throwing an error on the use of LEFT

Sample query? Exact error message?

@AaronBertrand here's a fiddle - sqlfiddle.com/#!6/47eab/2
error - Invalid length parameter passed to the LEFT or SUBSTRING function.

Then you have some data that doesn't contain -

that's the thing the query is not returning anything without it yet it throws the error

You can't control where in the process SQL Server will try to convert that data - it may not ultimately end up in the result set, but if SQL Server tries to apply expressions to it before it is filtered out...

6:24 PM
It's weird that this just cropped up when we changed the PK

Where have I heard that before...

A: Conversion of varchar data to datetime failing

Aaron BertrandWhat happens when you do this? DECLARE @REAL_DATES TABLE ( CompletionDate VARCHAR(46) ); INSERT INTO @REAL_DATES SELECT CompletionDate FROM dbo.Entity; SELECT CAST(RD.CompletionDate AS datetime) AS casts_fine FROM @REAL_DATES RD; What I was getting at on twitter was ...

If I rollback the PK change it works

@bluefeet it's because you got a different plan
Try LEFT(s.S_Desc, COALESCE(NULLIF((CHARINDEX('-', s.S_Desc)),0),1) - 1)

yup that works
we were going to throw a WHERE the charindex > 0

Probably won't help. Or it may help today but will break tomorrow.

6:28 PM
that's why I asked in here :)
for y'all to correct my poor sql skills

You just have vacationitis

,1) - 1) - should probably be ,LEN(s.S_Desc)+1) - 1) - unless you want that to come back blank. Won't matter in this case (and probably not a bad idea to filter out those without that character) but in case you use that elsewhere,

@billinkc I'm definitely struggling with that

It's not too late for me to swap out and go in your stead

We are using DELETE/UPDATE/INSERT

@bluefeet sweet! I should go back and see if any of the bugs have been resolved
I don't see anything wrong with del/upd/ins. That worked for years before MERGE was invented. Nobody has been faster to market because they wrote this logic using a magical, single statement. In fact I'd argue they took longer.

I saw a lady get off the train at the Mall of America and saw the escalator was broken and said "Well Fuck this" and went back to the train. 1 Flight of stairs....
