6:00 PM
I rejected it

@MaxVernon No. It's your answer and the edit makes no sense. Just reject it.

Good on you @JNK.
I always often struggle with edits from that user.

JNK
yeah it's a mixed bag
You don't want to totally discourage since some good stuff gets through

@billinkc I'm not so sure about that since my congressmen represents me and 677547 other people.

@PaulWhite seconded
thanks for the upvote, whoever did that!

6:04 PM
@Zane Democracy is a weird system in many ways. Many democracies end up with a voting choice of two main parties, neither of which might match your views. In principle, you could start a party or vote for smaller parties, but without huge funding...etc.

@PaulWhite I've been doing that for years.

Also, what incentive is there for good leaders to end up in politics, eventually running the country? In many cases, it seems to me that under-average-ability good-looking people with the right contacts become leaders. Weird way to run a chip shop.
@Zane Voting for a minor party?

I love the system in place for the province of Nunavut, in Northern Canada... actual democracy by consensus.

However the libertarian party has just become a bunch of anti-science, anti-vaccination, nut bar hillbillies.
@PaulWhite Yeah.

@MaxVernon Isn't that what sent California broke? A person is smart, people are dumb, something like that from MIB anyway.

6:08 PM
@JNK The other example that gets cited a lot is the $3000 hammer sold by a contractor as an "omnidirectional impact generator"

JNK
@James oh I'm sure a lot of it is complete BS

@Zane New one on me, I'll have to google them :)

@PaulWhite A person is smart, people are just dumb panicky animals and you know that

@PaulWhite you're probably exactly right.

@billinkc Thank you sir. Do you have that memorized? Or on a hotkey?

JNK
6:09 PM
@billinkc We don't want your high opinion of US culture to be reduced so please don't

The number of times I've had to say it beggars belief

@PaulWhite Philosophically I'm very anti-government and pro personal and economic liberty. However I'm also aware that in the modern world that isn't decidedly practicle.

JNK
@Zane Everyone is anti-government when it comes to paying things or dealing with bureaucracy but pro-government when it's providing essential services like paving the roads or putting out fires

Almost certainly a "single login" event is not being recorded multiple times. A far more likely cause would be something is actually logging in multiple times, and SQL Server is simply doing its job. — Max Vernon 12 secs ago

Democratically, everyone will vote to spend more and be taxed less.

JNK
6:11 PM
@PaulWhite yeah there's some quote about that from ancient greece

@JNK That is indeed the case. However it's safe to say that the government we currently live under does much much more than these things.

@JNK Those ancient greeks, that had it all worked out. Except for irrationals and calculus, of course.

I do like me a good billing system

JNK
@Zane yeah, they all do :)
@PaulWhite they knew the earth was round, though!

Billing in KC.

6:13 PM
@JNK 70k pesos is a bit low these days but it was quite a decent salary within living memory.

JNK
I thought Billings was in MONTANA
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells depends on where you live too
In Syracuse, NY 70,000 American dollars is pretty awesome
In fancy-pants Connecticut it ain't great

@JNK 70k NZD would have been quite comfortable in Christchurch. Middle of the road in Ak. I never earned that much in NZ until I went contracting.
@PaulWhite He is a knob-end but the entertainment value is awesome.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells I started with that view but the joke got old over the last several weeks.
I'm probably just old and grumpy though.
@JNK If only government would stick to such things.

Too soon, I'd venture.

6:17 PM
it's a protest picture so the timing is right on, i suppose

@swasheck Oh I see.

@PaulWhite I managed to stand 5 minutes of that conference (linked above). And he didn't even talk in those 5. I guess I'm even more old and grumpy.

@PaulWhite Actually, part of what makes dotcom fun is that I'm living on the other side of the world.

JNK
I need to add a subtitle to the room today
"Serious Adult Talk"

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Ha! Now that I can understand.

6:19 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Here the cost of living is far lower than the US. This month a coworker started working here, he was previously working in Texas. His actual income is a little less than half of what he was making there, but he says that he can save a net over 10% more than what he was

@ypercube 5 minutes? Wow, you must have been determined.
@JNK I don't know what's wrong with us today.

JNK
@Lamak TX is one of the cheaper places in the US too

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells I think > 90k is still a struggle in Welly.

JNK
it varies a LOT based on where you are here

@JNK I'm somehow aware of that

6:21 PM
There was an infographic floating around recently about how much $1 buys in various US states. Of course I have no idea where I saw it.

it still kinda surprised me though

I heard Texas was about to be annexed by Mexico.

JNK
certain regions are a LOT more expensive, in large part because of taxes
@PaulWhite Don't worry we have lots of governors in helicopters manning machine guns there just in case

@PaulWhite and there's also the Big Mac Index

@MaxVernon You caved!
@JNK Ah. Good, good.

JNK
6:23 PM

@PaulWhite lol, yeah, I just wanted to put a boot in it before someone else mentions that I failed to answer the bloody question.,

@MaxVernon Allgood. I just thought it was funny.

might as well store it on a flash drive:

Q: MSSQL database on external hard drive shows Recovery Pending

blue piranhaI have created a database in SQL Server 2012 with mdf and ldf pointing to a external hard drive attached to my machine. @JNK he looks like arnold in that picture ... without the muscles and brains

I can't believe people think its a good idea to consider going to a NoSQL solution when they have 2 damn tables to join, and performance isn't incredible when they have only 8GB (!!!!!) of ram in the system.

@Lamak Great link.
@swasheck I thought it was Arnie!

@PaulWhite rick perry
(no relation to the Journey singer)

Crikey.

@billinkc way to shoot down Access! Even Access doesn't like it if you do that kind of stupidity!
@MaxVernon That is correct. — blue piranha 21 secs ago
Oh man

@MaxVernon ownst..
@MaxVernon That is correct. — blue piranha 44 secs ago

@Kermit Some people should have their computer license revoked.

6:32 PM
@MaxVernon Anything you might say in jest has actually been done by an SO user more than once.

@PaulWhite I see that now. Mind is now blown.

And the day is yet young.

you dont understand the power of the dumb side of the force

@MaxVernon Thanks for being part of the solution. — blue piranha 25 secs ago
Meanwhile, I'm part of the precipitate

JNK
@swasheck Neither does the dumb side of the force, thankfully.

6:41 PM
Don't worry, it wasn't intentional. — Max Vernon 9 secs ago

JNK
The wonderful thing about stupidity is its presence means it can't be detected by those it infects.

That's deep.

@JNK Genius. Totally.

JNK
I read something recently related to that which was essentially about the relationship between ignorance of a topic and how much people over-estimated their abilities in that topic
The TL;DR version was that if you didn't have enough domain knowledge to understand the scope of a subject, you thought you knew a lot about it
Kind of like how you read a @PaulWhite blog post about some crazy voodoo the query engine does that you had no idea even existed and realize how little you know about SQL Server

@JNK You can decipher the intelligence level of someone by how little they say they know.

JNK
6:45 PM
But you know it exists because Paul is showing you how to get the QE to generate a fractal spline reticulation matrix with 4 different queries

Pah. That only requires three queries.

JNK
@PaulWhite sorry, I meant four DIFFERENT scenarios to generate one

Or four tax levels :)

JNK
yes exactly
All your deep dives are taxing ;)

Here's a possibly rewarding career:

6:49 PM
@JNK link or it didnt happen

well, this isn't putty

> As mentioned above, this bug manifests when estimation is performed for a semi join with related predicates positioned beyond a union all.

That sentence is a model of clarity.

@JNK f*ck me.

JNK
@PaulWhite no it really is
this is not a criticism of your writing style at all

6:52 PM
Yeah right.

JNK
but you deal with some pretty deep technical details in your posts

Oh ok then, I'll take that.

JNK
I understand it if I think about it

@PaulWhite It's crystal. The only problem is all the actual thinking one has to do to parse it.
3
@PaulWhite you seem to be exceptional at putting a lot of detail in a single sentence without it being wordy in any way. Very few have that skill.

Oh shush now. Embarrassing.

JNK
6:54 PM
yeah it really is very precise, but it's deep deep deep into the internals like most of your posts

(but thanks :)

JNK
And I am assuming most folks (similar to myself) think they understand the fundamentals of internals until presented with a blog post by someone who actually does

@JNK this

@PaulWhite It's my pleasure. I love reading your articles, even if they inevitably send me down a massively long rabbit hole.
@JNK YUUUUPPPP

JNK
It's like I think I understand particle physics and quantum theory from reading wikipedia and science articles but if I talked to someone who worked on the LHC I would be quickly humbled

6:56 PM
Oh yeah I totally get that.

JNK
I know enough to answer a question from someone who knows less about the general way that something happens
But I'm not publishing papers on it :)

@JNK I had an interesting conversation with a friend about dock spiders.
He said that there seemed to be a lot more dock spiders on his new dock than on his old dock.

@PaulWhite ... speaking of being infinitely smarter than me, i was wondering if you had any thoughts about my question here:
2
Q: Switching Data In Fails with "allows values that are not allowed by check constraints or partition function on target table"

swasheckGiven the following -- table ddl create table dbo.f_word( sentence_id int NULL, sentence_word_id int NULL, word_id int NULL, lemma_id int NULL, source_id int NULL, part_of_speech_id int NULL, person_id int NULL, gender_id int NULL, number_id int NULL, ten...

I said (in my most authoritative voice) "That's because dock spiders prefer the new wood".
2
Like I know anything at all about dock spiders.

@swasheck I'll take a look shortly. I need to have a phone coversation with my power company right now.

6:58 PM
@PaulWhite no worries. thanks

Dolomedes /dɒləˈmiːdiːz/ is a genus of large spiders of the family Pisauridae. They are also known as fishing spiders, raft spiders, dock spiders or wharf spiders. Almost all Dolomedes species are semi-aquatic, with the exception of the tree-dwelling D. albineus of the southwestern United States. Many species have a striking pale stripe down each side of the body. They hunt by waiting at the edge of a pool or stream, then when they detect the ripples from prey, they run across the surface to subdue it using their foremost legs, which are tipped with small claws; like other spiders they then inject...

@MaxVernon apparently it's Greenwood

@swasheck You have a table just for the word f**k?

@PaulWhite why not?

@swasheck Cool!
@swasheck I see the problem - your clustered key isn't wide enough /s

@Kermit Why is that unclear? Seems pretty clear and not easy to do (not that I can find an application for the q)

@swasheck I tested with your example, and it seems to work with a NOT NULL

@Gonsalu cool. thanks.

@ypercube unclear for lack of effort

@swasheck No problemo

Q: Two Way School Timetable Schema

BluecrestHi to anyone reading this! I really need help with creating a two way timetable database via SQL or Microsoft Access! I've did my homework of course by googling but the answers didn't seem clear enough and weren't very good. I've also attempted to make an ERD Diagram and prototyped my database ...

@Kermit That's something else. But it's not an easy task. I think Aaron was discussing something similar the previous week.

> I've did my homework of course

The google+ preview picture of this article lead me to Paul had finally given up on this engine hokum and embraced the BI side of things.
I have a dissapoint. Lakhs of dissapoint

yet another way teh google plus sucks

i like how that article has 3 facebook shares
@bluefeet wasn't there a meta question about using unclear what you're asking = no effort ?

8:02 PM
I was going to let this question rot but I think I just got called out
That is not difficult to do this directly in SSIS data flow, but impossible to demonstrate on SO. — Bulat 9 mins ago

8:24 PM
@Kermit probably
were you expecting me to find it?

Perhaps Kermit should ask a meta question about whether there was a meta question where "unclear what you're asking = no effort"

@billinkc VtC ... no research effort

A: Switching Data In Fails with "allows values that are not allowed by check constraints or partition function on target table"

Paul WhiteThe thing about CHECK constraints is they only disallow rows for which the predicate returns FALSE. If the check returns UNKNOWN, that is not FALSE, so the row passes the check: CREATE TABLE dbo.T1 (id int NULL CHECK (id = 1)); INSERT dbo.T1 VALUES (1); -- Ok INSERT dbo.T1 VALUES (2); -- Error ...

^^^ @swasheck ^^^

8:40 PM
@PaulWhite nice

JNK
NULL strikes again (?)
It's actually unknown if it struck the first time.

@JNK More trouble that it's (unknown to be) worth.

@PaulWhite durr. thanks so much. @Gonsalu found a link for me but i appreciate the explanation. it's always something that's simple in hindsight

JNK
@swasheck it's always simple once you know the answer

@swasheck What link? When?

@swasheck Oh I see now. I was busy writing the answer and didn't see the chat message.

@PaulWhite yeah. the answer is great, though. thanks. i appreciate it (and prefer it)

Better that there's an answer anyway.

JNK
yep

@MikeFal Yes that's true.

JNK
8:43 PM
if @swasheck is like me he will forget this in a year or two and google it and find that nugget

@JNK that's the only way i'm like you. otherwise i'm a dope.

JNK
@swasheck negatory. Let's talk about storage layer stuff :)
Also partitioning :)

Off to get some sleep. Catch you all later.

Have a good one man.

thanks @PaulWhite ... sleep well

Good day today. Sleep tight. I'll likely kill you in the morning.
