Q: Review queue oddness

FreshPhilOfSOThere are currently 55 questions in the close queue on DBA.se - Many are old, and it all seems a bit weird that old questions now have 4 out of 5 close votes. http://dba.stackexchange.com/review Has a user been deleted, thus causing the number of close votes to revert back to 4 from 5 for these ...

Edited the question with what I see
Something's obviously gone tits-up

1:16 AM
Looks like it. I have a notification flag that there are 64 suggested edits waiting, but zero in the queue.

1:33 AM
@PaulWhite So dba.stackexchange.com/review doesn't show anything?
It's 30 days since I changed my name. Reckon that may have buggered things? Some crappy batch job got rid of all my close votes?

@FreshPhilOfSO Exactly. Zero waiting for review, brown flag for 64 suggested edits waiting for review. Borked.

Bet it's me that's broken it then. I've edited the meta question accordingly

@FreshPhilOfSO Probably an Oracle bug, better file something on Metalink

@MikeFal More likely to be a NOLOCK problem in the SO code :P

Q: Notify users of possible reviews on toolbar

MichaelTI am under the impression that increased participation in the review queue is, on the whole a good thing. It encourages people to feel an ownership in the community and partially responsible for the site as a whole. On Programmers.SE, I've seen what I believe to be an uptick in flagging to clos...

See the top answer there
Oh. Terrible. Will drive me mad having a number there I can do nothing about at a certain point in time. — FreshPhilOfSO 12 secs ago
"Thank you for reviewing 20 close votes today; come back in 21 hours to continue reviewing.". Nooooooooooooooooo. The counter won't disappear!

2:45 AM
@PaulWhite by the way, on Saturday I'm out in Miramar until 4:30ish refereeing a soccer game - did you particularly want to catch the early game or should we plan on meeting up about 7ish and grabbing some food and a beer at a bar somewhere? I think @MikeFal's plan involves renting a car and going to Martinborough at some point, so later may be better for him

@PaulWhite @SimonRigharts I'm open for whatever. Martinborough will probably wait until Sunday, so I'm open for Saturday and whatever works for people.

4 hours later…
7:04 AM
@SimonRigharts I was thinking evening time, yes.

gbn
@FreshPhilOfSO I will pitch in and administer the coup de grace

@gbn I'm confused. The number alerts have been there for a while (for 10K) but they usually reflect the number of items actually in the queue. Why the sudden disparity today?

gbn
@PaulWhite I dunno. I've not been following events here for a while

Any mods around?

1 hour later…

1 hour later…
10:06 AM
@FreshPhilOfSO Aha! I had read that a couple of times, but it didn't sink in.
So they've replaced something useful and actionable with something that is pointless. This would be progress?

Indeed...

I really can't believe this. There usually sense behind SE changes, but this is daft.

1 hour later…

Tell you what, just enable the toolbar for chat.se and I'll be happy... — FreshPhilOfSO 9 hours ago
yes this ^^^^^^ !
that actually would be progress

JNK
12:26 PM
@PaulWhite I am now

It's ok, Phil encouraged me to read the meta post again and it finally sunk in.
I do prefer the forward kind of progress though.

@Kermit, if you can't solve this problem it doesn't mean that the database is wrong. it's require to store data in this way. — Dhaval Ptl 6 hours ago

1:08 PM
I can't look at the front page of DBA.se any more. There's 35 lots of NULL :/

@JNK thanks for adding constructive comments

@FreshPhilOfSO Picture please! Sounds intriguing.

1:39 PM
morning

JNK
hi @bluefeet

1:52 PM
Yo.

Nothing for me to do!

It really is a bad system
And yesterday I think they went live with it in SO, without excluding close votes, so I saw a 1k notification for a while

2:11 PM

Hi Kermit

@FreshPhilOfSO I wonder how you got to have 40+ questions to close, while I got none.

@James how's london

Hi Dr. Nick

@Kermit Not too bad -- in the middle of another tube strike

2:16 PM
@Zane thank you
@James those damn tubers

@James Tube strike?

@James soooo ... black cab?

There is a great letter FDR wrote about the dangers of Unionization of Public sector workers.

2:25 PM
Gas build up.

like me after taco tuesday

Waka Waka

@Zane c'mon man. you tense about tonight? loosen up. (i think the wild have a greater tan 55% chance of winning)
dude. really???? i thought that was going to be at least about Virgin Atlantic.

@FreshPhilOfSO @JNK @JackDouglas Please remove this . NSFW

open.close. lesson learned. don't trust links from phil.

2:34 PM
@FreshPhilOfSO really not cool

JNK
Thanks, Phil

lol

Oops, sorry ;)

@swasheck Hehe, I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking. What's this company that is bidding on Virgin Air...

@billinkc exactly. i was like ... this is big news!

2:36 PM
Branson must be on hard times

@bluefeet i forgot!

@bluefeet but you're up to your armpits in SO swill

@swasheck eh, not so much right now. I've been distracted

@bluefeet real job getting in the way?

@swasheck yes and stuff outside of work

did you ever hear about what purpose that calendar served? did you ask michael, "WTF MAN????!!!????!!!!oneoneone"

JNK
2:39 PM
@swasheck "I'm the sure the asking price will be...<put on sunglasses>...sky high!"

@bluefeet hopefully good stuff

@swasheck unfortunately not. I've got to plan a trip to Dallas because my mom needs surgery - Of course, they are flying from CT to TX for the surgery.

@JNK is that a legal marijuana joke???

JNK
@swasheck virgin air joke

@bluefeet sorry to hear it. that really sounds like a big deal.
@JNK i know. i was just trying for the "random-theme-shift-via-stream-of-consciousness" trope that @billinkc pulled off. i clearly still have a lot to learn

2:43 PM
@swasheck just sucks, last year I had to fly to NYC for my dad and this year my mom.

@bluefeet right. i remember that.

A: How can I eliminate this costly index seek operation from my query?

Paul WhiteIn addition to the T-SQL techniques discussed in Aaron Bertrands article, "Best approaches for grouped running totals", you might want to look at a SQLCLR procedure. The main advantages are that a SQLCLR procedure requires only a single scan of the source records, and benefits from the increased...

@billinkc dude, that's @AaronBertrand's thing

@JNK Or just upgrade to 2012/2014 :P

Q: Truncate Log Files in SQL 2008 R2

user3498389Here is my query in SQL 2005 that I use for truncating log files. My log file will grow to 7G and when I execute this query in a nightly job it will truncate it to 10M. How do I replicate this query in SQL 2008 R2? My current query errors with NO_LOG. Use Master BACKUP log DBNAME WITH NO_LOG ...

JNK
2:47 PM
@billinkc there's some cardinality issues in 2014
SO had to roll back to the previous engine

SO doesn't have a sufficient workload to properly determine such things

@JNK maybe. or maybe they're letting the SO community write the underlying queries!

JNK
Marc Gravell actually has an interesting series of posts about some of their DB design
they ended up having to denormalize tags into a delimited list on the questions table to make it faster to lookup

@billinkc Yes, the 2012 extensions are best.

@PaulWhite @JNK so ... is it a bug with the cardinality estimates in 2014 or is it unexpected behavior/performance from the new algorithm?

2:55 PM
@swasheck tense?

JNK
@swasheck I think the thing to remember with cardinality is just about any change you make to the algorithm will make some stuff worse and some stuff better
From all I have heard the 2014 algorithms make a LOT of stuff better

@Zane you mocked my joke

@swasheck It's just hard to estimate the cardinality of a windowed aggregate.

JNK
but SO has some special cases

We are doing a heritage day at work.
@swasheck Nah uh. Waka Waka is a badge of honor.

2:56 PM
@Zane takes a bow

Fozzy bear is a beast.

@PaulWhite i can see that

Why's everyone talking about 2014 rather than 2012? Am I missing something?

@JNK isnt that true for most changes?

JNK
@PaulWhite no I just mentioned the 2014 thing because Nick Craver tweeted last week about some issues they were having

2:57 PM
Any of you have ideas for something fun to do for a team offsite?

@JNK Is there a post about that or just a tweet?

JNK
@PaulWhite not sure let me check

@Zane brewery/distillery tour. paintball. (we also have a dart war place which is like paintball with nerf darts)

@swasheck It's today...

The 2014 cardinality estimator is more sane, and results may often be 'better' but it's just a different set of assumptions and rules. Sometimes it will be worse. Cardinality estimation is just hard.

JNK
2:59 PM
Well, a few queries Stack Overflow runs are thousands of times worse with 2014 cardinality, we’re back on 2012 compatibility for now

@Zane so ... brewery/distillery tour

Perfect timing, thanks :)

@JNK no thought of refactoring the queries?

JNK
@swasheck I don't think they touch those very much unless they have to

Gotta love a website with that makes you click next every paragraph to increase page views.

3:00 PM
I hope that tweet was based on the results of testing, not production experiences.

JNK
If you have a query running millions of times a day and working until you make a change, first instinct is to roll it back
@PaulWhite yeah previous tweet was about turning the CE on
so I think he turned it on, saw the issue, then rolled back

In production?!?
Yee-ha!

JNK
@PaulWhite Actually not sure, I have to imagine they have a pretty thorough test environment

@JNK Let's go with that.

3:02 PM
@JNK you can logship uprev but not downrev, right?

JNK
@swasheck yes
Well I know you can UP
I have to assume you can't down
and we are all 2008r2 finally so I can't test for you :)

You can't apply a log backup from a later version to an earlier version.

@JNK definitely not down.
@PaulWhite i knew that downrev was right out ... but wasnt sure about applying logs from 2008r2 -> 2012

JNK
But I know for sure you can up, we did 2008->2008r2

@PaulWhite Do all things in production. Live on the edge.

3:04 PM
Certainly makes for a more exciting life, Mr Brunette.

theoretically it makes sense that it would work (like a full+tail restore), but i just didnt know if LS would be different in some mysterious way

Back-ups and spare parachutes are for casuals. :)

JNK
@swasheck one thing I did discover about this is that you can't restore the initial backup on the up version in standby
has to be in recovery
if you try to do standby it will bomb telling you a database upgrade is required

Exactly, the upgrade involves writes.

JNK
yep

3:06 PM
right ^^
oh crap. so the full request comes through

JNK
so that threw a wrench in my plan a little but we worked around it

can we logship from production to the 2012 test environment primary node and let that sync with its secondaries
hahahahaha
no

JNK
why would you want to do that?

This queue notification number is really irritating me.
I should have a cup of tea.

i love it when people do that.
"hey. can you log ship from a lower version to a higher version?"
"i believe so, yes."
"ok. can you set up log shipping from production sharepoint to the 2012 AG sharepoint test site?"
"funknaw"

JNK
3:08 PM
@PaulWhite oh PS, I thought of you yesterday
Mainly because you are from NZ
Started watching Netflix series Short Poppies

@JNK because they're lazy idiots

@JNK Ha!

JNK
It's pretty hilarious

@JNK I've not seen it, but I like the title and description. It doesn't seem to be available on TVNZ OnDemand right now. I'll look out for it. Sounds right up my street.

JNK
@PaulWhite I listened to an interview with Rhys Darby and he said you don't get Netflix instant watch there which blew my mind, but he said it was released in NZ first through some other media

3:14 PM
@JNK Yes I probably just missed it. OnDemand doesn't keep new stuff available for long, typically.

JNK
yeah here either
Some database-related news: apparently Oracle dropped the ball on the Oregon healthcare exchange

> Well done Madame. We need to celebrate one of these days

Yeah, NPR reported on that fiasco a number of times. Hadn't heard that they were scrapping it entirely in favor of the federal version

is it my idea or that is really condescending?

Great effort here:

A: Optimize where clause using dates

ypercubeIt's not so hard to do this transformation. Step by step: DATEADD(DAY , ISNULL(a.[due_days], 30) + 30 , [dbo].[CalcDate]([type], date1, date2, date3, date4, NULL) ) < GETDATE() means: [dbo].[CalcDate]([type], date1, date2, date3, date4, NULL) + (ISNULL(a.[due_days], 30)...

3:24 PM
@Lamak no. i think it was more like W's "Mission Accomplished" announcement

yeah, you may be right. Anyway, "Well done Madame" sounds so pretentious
like a reddit user comment

@Lamak hahahahahahahahaahah

@JNK their CIO presented at Oracle Open World last year, hailing it all a massive success. Kevin Closson (ex-Oracle employee, blogger, storage bloke, ported Oracle to several platforms) was bashing Oracle on Twitter about it all last night. mobile.twitter.com/kevinclosson

@FreshPhilOfSO I get this: "Forbidden (Rate Limit Exceeded)"

@FreshPhilOfSO now he works for EMC ...

@Lamak twitter is broken for you. Ace
@swasheck indeed. Wrote SLOB (which is awesome)

@FreshPhilOfSO I know, just weird somehow, first time for me

Probably already had one, but can't talk about it :)

A: What would it take in a book to convince a rational person that it had been written by or directly inspired by a god?

Computer ScientistAbstractly you want an interaction between two parties that will show to the first one that the second one is God, i.e. an interactive proof by God for the verifier who is our rational person. Answer depends on what you mean by God (prover), what you mean by a rational person (verifier) and what...

3:32 PM
@bluefeet yes, this one.

@AaronBertrand thanks!

/sigh
I just posted a question on the sharepoint site.

@Zane take everything you know to be a best practice for sql server and do the opposite. there's your answer :)

there is a sharepoint SE site?

Is the SO Close Votes queue really down to 10k?

3:38 PM
@swasheck It's a blog formating question actually.
@PaulWhite They did a huge push and got it empty it's been climbing pretty rapidly ever since.

@Zane good luck with that

I'm glad I don't have the rep on SO to see that ;)

Can you guys hit sqlperformance.com and tell me the title of the second post
(is it repeatable read, or read committed?)

The Read Committed Isolation Level

3:44 PM
The Read Committed Isolation Level

Nice, thanks

Nice, our TTL works

@swasheck I see what you did there. Post a larger image than me will ya!

@Zane i wanted to include the full range of what he was requesting.

Q: When is Spring in the USA?

jaydz49I am from Australia and want to visit the United States of America in the spring season. I am unsure of when the American Spring is.

@FreshPhilOfSO This can be corrected

The answer to this question for Minnesota is never.

We have Winter and then in June it will become Summer in an instant.

@Zane that stinks. we have about 3.5 weeks of spring.

3:50 PM
@swasheck We have about 2 weeks of it but it's spread across 3 months. lol

@Zane yeah. that too, for us

Did you see this about Flight 370? Seems it has been totally ignored for a few weeks. cbsnews.com/news/…

We had a few days in March a few in April and we might get a full week of it in May.

@Zane march and beginning of april we strung together two good weeks
now it's snowing
and in a week or two we'll be stupid hot
@FreshPhilOfSO shootdown and coverup?

@FreshPhilOfSO That scanning tech is boss.

4:07 PM
It is impressive. As is the analysis

4:17 PM
@Zane I'm completely ignorant about sharepoint, but does this helps?

It might. I'm looking into it.

hopefully it does

I like all the people who are like his punishment isn't enough. What are we supposed to do? The guy's a dick last I checked that's not a crime. The NBA is doing all it can. I'm not sure what else they want them to do.

JNK
@Zane you can only punish people so far for their beliefs and not their actions
Obviously what he said was reprehensible but unless he is actively discriminating against people there's not a lot more they could do

@JNK Which he has done and been successfully sued for.

JNK
4:46 PM
@Zane yeah but I mean this particular incident

Yup yup.

@JNK which is why the financial angle of sponsorship is being pursued so far. damaging the (impeccable) image of the nba has severe financial consequences.
i just want to see oprah as an nba owner

how far was it for you?

@swasheck About 2.5 miles for me.
I don't mind, actually I walk in or run back whenever I'm not too lazy...

is there any documentation on join limit in a query?

1
A: What is the maximum number of joins allowed in SQL Server 2008?

Martin SmithThe other answers already give the direct answer to your question Limited only by available resources However even if SQL Server successfully compiles a plan for your query that doesn't mean that you should. The more joins you have the exponentially larger the space of possible query plans ...

5:38 PM
thanks, but need official documentation
as it's going in my thesis

limited by resources appears to be the direct answer
are you saying in the full SQL standard?

5:55 PM
I'm reading an article from 1998:
> For example, in our informal tests on a high-end PC with 128 MB of RAM, a five-table/ alias join yielding a one-million-row result was per- formed with Microsoft Access in less than a minute.

JNK
@Kermit don't make fun
my first PC was a 386 SX 16 mhz with a 40 MB hard drive and 1 MB of ram
I upgraded to 4 MB of ram so it could run Doom
which still sucked on a 386
Then I got a blazing fast 486 DX2/66 mhz with a TURBO BUTTON

@JNK my first pc was a 66 mhz with 8 mb of ram
packard bell iirc
this is pretty close
in first grade though (1994), my school lab had those mechanical keyboard IBM's with green screen monitors and dot matrix printers
now it takes me forever to install windows 8.. 3711 floppies

@JNK my first pc was a Tandy

JNK
6:20 PM
@bluefeet My cousin had a tandy with king's quest and we played it a lot
also the other quest for glories

i played baseball and football in the street a lot because we couldnt afford a computer :). i didnt have a computer to use for myself until about 7 years ago.

JNK
@AaronBertrand you around?
nevermind i found it
@Kermit can you imagine if you lost disk 3710?

@Kermit My first computer showed: > 761 bytes free (that is no error, it was bytes)

@JNK or if it couldn't read it
@ypercube greece was behind times

JNK
@Kermit That's 2 GB in metric though

6:29 PM
lol

@Kermit Nah, I'm, just way older than you.

@ypercube only 2 decades

@Kermit Right, Moore's law proved.
8MB / 1KB = 2^13
13 * 1.5 = 19.5 years
