hey there @TrEs-2b

hey
Is there any good reason why both of the dental fricatives in English are represented with <th>?
Most languages' orthography's use <dh> for the voiced version(there vs dhere), why doesn't English do this?

In Russian we have a saying that explains anything that doesn't make sense - "so that enemy tanks can't pass"
This seems like one of those things

Ah
Just another thing to fix when I seize power

2:00 AM
@TrEs-2b On the other hand I have decided you and a couple others are not operating as expected and will recall your programs for review. :) No fear, you wont know a thing and if I find a flaw that can fixed so you can salvaged, you wont know anything was changed. Not quite sure why she thought you and the other handful were working as intended ... going to need to talk with her when she gets in.

@EnigmaMaitreya What?

2 hours later…
3:54 AM
@TrEs-2b because english is stupid

2 hours later…
6:12 AM
@EnigmaMaitreya That reminds me of something. I think it's the same idea as what I read about making a heat engine that runs on quantum entropy. That is, having a single resovour with two different states instead of two resovoirs.
@TrEs-2b I recall the story about English sourcing typeface when that was becoming a thing, missing the thorn (þ) and eth (ð) were missing so various workarounds were tried, including using a y which was popular for a while, but th eventually won out. I've never had it explained why ðey would choose th for ðis, ðough.

6:31 AM
@JDługosz Related to your realistic time machine question, have you read Joe Haldeman's The Accidental Time Machine (2007)? It has an instrument developed to measure quantum relationships between light and gravity and turns out to be a working time machine instead.

However, comparing ðis with þat offers a suggestion: some languages used the shape of the capital form Ð to suggest using a d, oðers used the shape suggested by the abbreviation for “þat” as a þ with the ascender crossed. Cut off at the midline and it looks like a t h smashed togeþer.
@a4android I'm pretty sure I never read þat.
Wow, this question has crazy votes.

@JDługosz I haven't either, but your question has inspired me to do so. Found my copy while I was doing research for the question. Crazy votes? Why? They just look all over the shop. A lot of questions have that (can't do that fancy character for "th") so I have to go with the conventional.

6:54 AM
@JDługosz Funnel cakes? Which Asian culture are they? I'm not familiar with them. So what's their attraction, if they had the longest queues?

@a4android Crazy as in even split of up and down votes. No comments as to why it’s bad, ðough, which is bad for feeding back into the “lesson”.
«can't do that fancy character for "th" so I have to go with the conventional» ðat echos ðe reason a substitution was found in ðe first place ☺. Tip: just copy/paste from the earlier message or the Wikipedia page. I happen to have ð and þ handy on my tablet keyboard app. I use Miltiling O Keyboard.
@a4android Funnel cakes are not Asian at all! That was why I made the remark. But, considering how many dim sum plates and grilled skwers I saw, I think it’s a biased observation. Have to wait for the fryer, as opposed to grabbing stuff that’s ready.
Turns out dogs eat free at the food vendor row! Not intended, but many a dumpling had been dropped. Annie won’t let that go to waste — dirt is a favorite condiment to her.

7:14 AM
lol
funnel cakes are very american

@JDługosz The no comments thing is a nuisance. Hard to know what is wrong or not, or whether who is wrong. It's an interesting exercise in trying to demonstrate how to debug lousy questions. [Pun intended.] ðanks for ðe tip.
Funnel cakes never made to Australia. Yep @JourneymanGeek, they are very American. We had waves of German immigrants in 19th century, so we have lots of German cakes and meat dishes but somehow the funnel cake made its amrk.

aww
she's adorable
tricolour border collie?

I was wondering the same thing too. Very cute.

@a4android German via Pennsylvania. That group invented a lot of deserts. It's very much like my Polish version.
@JourneymanGeek miniature aunstralian shephard. Pedigree’d from a local breeder.

7:23 AM
ah

8 months old now.

aww. so she'll look permapuppy? ;p

Browse back for earlier photos. (9 weeks old).
Boy does she turn heads. And she knows she’s cute.
Anyway, my wife was playing the pipa in a band at the festival.

Oh, that's dangerous. ;p
My dog takes full advantage of that

So an Australian Shepherd, miniature variety, that's explains why she looked like an Australian cattle dog. Interesting to know the variety has reached the USA. We have a fourteen year old Border Collie. There's nothing like a great dog. It's amazing how often people come up and say isn't she beautiful? Your Annie would definitely be in that category.

7:29 AM
There's a tricolor in my area
looks like a lankier version of yours
her owner dosen't let her socialise much, which is a pity

@JourneymanGeek I know what you mean. A few weeks ago I meet a couple walking a tricolour Border Collie. What fantastic looking dog! The owners were pleased their dog got some attention. I find it's always fun sharing your dog with other dog lovers.

@a4android apparently she's "training"
so basically he just forces her to go down when ANYONE walks over to say hi
which is dumb, she's going to probably try to herd everything she can cause she has no idea how to dog

My older pet is good looking, too.

That's a bit harsh. Border Collies are super smart, but here's no need to overdo the training.

That's the advantage of pets over regular kids ☺

@a4android my dog was trained by a guy who trains security dogs (family friend)

My old boss said dogs are better than kids. he had a Beagle.

There's a balance between being able to control your dog (ash is fine off leash, mostly and one of the calmest dogs I know) and breaking their spirit

So what, he remembers all your passwords for you, makes you change them every 30 days, stops you from clicking links in email…

@JourneymanGeek You're absolutely right about that. A good dog usually knows their owner wants. @JDługosz Now that would be the ultimate security dog :)

That's an odd looking dog...
@a4android in a sense, I work with my dog
rather than expect perfect obedience

7:38 AM
@JDługosz I knew you were a bird fancier. ðat's a great shot. Really love the blue in its tail feathers.
@JourneymanGeek Exactly right. If you work with a dog, the dog will work with you. It's so simple.

@a4android It’s hard to get a good picture since the blue needs good full-spectrum light. The purple/blue is quite vivid iridescent. And the underside of the wings are light turquoise.

Excuse me, guys. I've just been given the word. I have to prepare dinner. Roast chicken with steamed vegetables. One of my specialties. So I'll catch you later.

There are other pictures there you can see, too. Hit the x to go to an overview.

@JDługosz ðe colours of feathers are amazing. You find feaðers with different colours on ðe different sides. And especially with iridescence too, ðat makes photographing so tricky. Next time!

2 hours later…
Cake dog?

Yep :) It's the cake representation of our actual dog
I can upload another photo, but I don't want to swamp chat with photos unless you want to see the photo?
(of our actual dog)

lol. I'm never going to complain about dog pix

Alternative Universe: Protecting soldiers from the combustible lemons

Quick briefing:

Era: After ww2, before cold war

Hitler had come back from the Meme Hell.
He brought his army too.
He wants to capture an alien to steal his technology.
The alien doesn't want this to happen, so it decides to help the Polish cavalry from the shadows by giving them Cave Johnson's legendary Combustible Lemons, so they stand a chance against the Tiger II tanks.
This was all, the alien could do to help, the rest is on the cavalry.

That's not the same question. AT. ALL.

Morning

@RedactedRedacted You were asking a very convoluted and confusingly worded (and therefore terrible) question set in the 20th century. @JDługosz is asking a clear question set in the bronze age that is readable

Take a look at the first revision:
Alternative Universe: Polish cavalry vs Titler

You're still talking about tanks. Therefore it is not bronze age. Simple

There was a message from @JDługosz somewhere in the chat, where he brought up this confusion that came from the later edits

(although there is a chance that he put it up himself so that you could get your answer)

@RedactedRedacted In the upper right hand corner of the chat you can find a search bar where you can search the posts of users

Now let's roll with the Bronze age for the moment. Now the reader will wonder where this volatile chemical comes from, without modern tech level. @RedactedRedacted Huh??? You can't downvote something more than once. As @Secespitus said, your 'answer' isn't an answer to the question, hence lots of downvotes and it's been flagged

I only downvoted once in the entire site

how're things going?

Pretty good. Currently working on a new Worldbuilding question.

11:51 AM
@FutureHistorian there will be no results. I am busy doing other stuff at the moment. I will let you know if that changes.

12:06 PM
@RedactedRedacted This question could have been yours. In chat here, as well as comments before, we told you in detail how to re-write the question. My chat, in particular, stepped through the lesson and that's what I wrote my own version of. You ignored every particular of that advice, and instead added another coughed-up phelm ball and asked again if that's any better. You literally never got past step 1 (put the question first).

12:16 PM
@RedactedRedacted About your posted Answer (original version) — unlike the earlier answer you posted that earned upvotes, this post was un-gramattical, it refered to a video instead of saying the sentence, and (once the meaning is imported) did not provide an answer. Generally, refuting the question is only an answer when the reality-check tag is used. Otherwise, out-of-the-box answers still should not refute the premise.
2
And we know now that “there is no protection possible” is not true, thanks to other Answers.

There's still the problem of heat.

@Secespitus In all fairness, I think that normally a low-quality answer will get flagged for revew and get down to −2, not lower. People spend their own points to downvote!

@JDługosz Maybe your question got more attention because of the Meta post?

12:33 PM
hey there @Secespitus

Hello @Shalvenay, how is it going?

OK here, rather slow though :p

Afternoon folks

hey there @RoryAlsop

Hows the weekend?

12:36 PM
Nearly over...

somewhat annoying

@Secespitus It got 2 upvotes in 15 minutes in a slow time, before posting the Meta post.
And the meta post currenly has only 52 views. The Q post has 822. So at most 1 in 16 are drawn to it because of meta. I suspect the other way around — people see the meta post only because of the footnote in the Q.

1:06 PM
@JDługosz Okay, then apparently it's just an anomaly that his answer got down to -5.

The Q currently has 7 downvotes too — very odd to have a nearly even split of up and down.

1 hour later…
2:24 PM
Well, I can wait.
:(

2:53 PM
@Secespitus @Bellerophon perhaps you can help me with a couple of archery questions?

@Shalvenay It's been nearly 10 years since I last tried archery, but I can try.

first off -- is it plausible that one could keep a bow with the string slid down one limb so that the string is not under tension?

....I have no idea. Sounds plausible to me, but why would you do that?

not being bad to the bowstring by keeping it strung, but still having it handy and ready and not flapping about in the breeze completely
the other question's simpler -- how does one carry a bow on their person if they're doing so on a regular basis?

3:10 PM
I always had my bow in something similar to a suitcase, just bigger, when bringing it to a tournament for example.

@Secespitus ah. I was thinking more of the kind of situation someone who had to spend several days with it out in the woods would be in

But you would still need to keep your bow safe from the elements, so I would imagine that people had to use something similar
@Shalvenay This might be useful for you

cool stuff, thanks
so it'd basically be a sheathe-like case for the bow if you were serious about it, or over-the-shoulder if you were just casually wandering on occasion pretty much
unrelated if you don't mind -- I wonder if you could take a modern HSS bit, chuck it in a hand brace, and use it to drill a hole in a piece of medieval-authentic plate armor?
(just as a demonstration of how far steel has evolved over the years)

No idea :D

3:25 PM
(it's either that, or take a sword and saw it in half point-to-pommel)

3:46 PM
@Shalvenay Not quite what you're looking for, but it's close enough: youtube.com/watch?v=cFRxZod-iI0

yeah -- I'd expect a rapier to kink before it was cut through, haha
(as in, a permanent set bend)
@Mithrandir24601 -- that actually raises the question -- what would it take to permanently sharply bend a rapier or similar sword?

@Shalvenay Repeated hits from another sword certainly looks like it would be enough...

@Mithrandir24601 I was thinking that a "scissors" type of attack flatwise on the blade -- i.e. using a shield-edge or off-hand weapon to catch the flat and push it one way, and the weapon in your other hand to push it the other way, would be relatively likely to put a serious bend in the thing, but it'd be tricky to pull off

@Shalvenay If you use a soft-enough-wood shield so that the sword gets stuck in the shield, it might make that easier
(If such a thing is possible)

that's also a possibility -- sword gets stuck in shield and that provides you with enough control to make a mess of it
because I doubt a rapier that's been bent sideways is going to be of that much use to you in a fight, haha

4:02 PM
Yeah - if your sword gets stuck in a shield would the best thing to do just throw it away?

@Mithrandir24601 yeah, if you can't get it back out again to begin with :P you might as well grab whatever else is to hand -- woe betide you if that was your only weapon that got stuck there haha

@Shalvenay At least if you're using a rapier, you'd normally have some sort of off-hand dagger as well, so it wouldn't quite be the end

@Mithrandir24601 yeah -- you'd have some sort of off-hand something, and probably have a dagger somewhere on your person if you had something other than a dagger in your offhand

4:32 PM
hey again @Bellerophon

So, a guy in a wheelchair won the Wings for Life World Run - that will get the tumblr people agitated

Why people keep downvoting without pointing out the problem with the question?
@Secespitus ONE graduated answer, and the others are all abandonned

@RedactedRedacted it might well be that people just want to express their agreement with any existing comments pointing out issues
But yeah, in the Sandbox this behaviour is suboptimal

@JDługosz, the great modthulhu said this:
I think the nrw revision (№ 4) is just fine! It mentions where they were seen (with a link) but only briefly describes how they are used. What I don’t understand is where is the “hook” in the picture? What is the mechanism inside the nicely finished box? – JDługosz♦ 5 hours ago
@dot_Sp0T is it possible to@Secespitus ping more people at once?

@RedactedRedacted Yes you can ping multiple people at once

@RedactedRedacted abandoned by the author most of the time

5:51 PM
@dot_Sp0T can I ping myself?

@dot_Sp0T Why would you do that?

Well my abandoned questions are here:

@RedactedRedacted You've authored half of the non-graduated questions...

...In the trash, hidden away from others

@RedactedRedacted Well, I commented and my comment got multiple upvotes, so others seem to agree with me

5:53 PM
The curse of skynet is still active
I clearly fixed those issues (mostly) @Secespitus

Please stop with this "curse"... It's not a curse, you are just abandoning your questions regularly

@RedactedRedacted What @Secespitus said

@Red Have you deleted the ones you abandoned?
Also does just putting part of someone's name work?

Yes, wait..
I mean no I don't think

@Bellerophon As long as you use at least 3 characters it should work as far as I know
Let's try @Bel

5:56 PM

It works. Now to find the combination of three letters that pings the most people.

@RedactedRedacted It would be nice if you could edit your deleted questions to something like "Posted: [Title](link)" or "Not posted: Title"
@Bellerophon It only pings one person
@RedactedRedacted Users with a lot of rep can still see deleted posts.

@Secespitus I bet it doesn't if there are two people with the same starting three letters.

@Bellerophon It only pings the last one to post something that matches the three characters

@Secespitus Then the sandbox will be all red for them :)

6:03 PM
@RedactedRedacted Those pictures are not funny

BTW: If JD says your question is fine you can probably post it. Not everyone checks every question after each revision and you currently have one downvote. So it might be possible that others on the Main Site will like your question.

I thought the question seemed fine to post.

You did change most of the things I mentioned and if a mod says the question is fine I don't see too many problems. And the smaller picture is better.

The curse is still there

Ah, when you say "curse" you meant the question ban the whole time?

My initial reaction was:
But yeah question ban

As far as I know not even the mods can lift a question ban.
You need to post answers that get upvotes and maybe edit posts

Usually lifts on its own after a bit.

6:09 PM
@Bellerophon I thought only the suspension is lifted on it's own
If a user has a lot of bad questions they get suspended and get back to 1 rep, visible for everyone. I've seen that a few times with a message indicating "x days remaining"

I'm sure I saw a post on main meta about question bans that lifted on their own. I'll have a look.

The answer indicates that a suspension is temporary, while a ban is not
"Automatic bans never expire or "time out.""

@RedactedRedacted Is that your first warning about questions? Seems harsh.

@RedactedRedacted In that case it is reasonable. Maybe when you were warned you should have changed your question asking activity.

6:15 PM
And that's what I did.

@RedactedRedacted What exactly did you change?

I'll try to keep it short

@RedactedRedacted If you have already been banned you can't post the question even if you improve it. You'll have to fix your existing posts.

Or find other ways to contribute to the community, like writing well-received answers and editing posts

@RedactedRedacted I suggest you start by removing images, removing the extra content and shortening questions as we suggested in the sandbox. Try to get some of them reopened.
Sorting that one might be a start. Doesn't seem like it would be too hard.
@Secespitus I feel that Redacted should learn how to write good questions before editing other peoples.

6:31 PM
Fixing grammar does not require him to know how to write good questions, but by reading a lot of posts from other people he might realize what makes a question "good".

@Bellerophon I feel that the best way to go about things in this case is writing good answers before trying to write good questions

Can I lift the curse by gaing rep from answers?

@RedactedRedacted I would remove the inside joke. It feels like you need to know what happened to understand the goal, which is exactly what should not happen.
And remember to assume nobody follows any links. I don't understand what you mean with PEP when reading the question

I'm trying to figure out somehow here: are Newtypes from the Gundam Series psionic?
If you look at how they act and their abilities, one could say that they are psionic, but in a more realistic way.

@Secespitus I don't think it should be their at all as it is just done to refute the existing answer.

@Bellerophon well the invalidating cannot always be prevented, especially if someone answers literally the second after the question is posted without even trying to understand it

@dot_Sp0T The answer was fine compared to the 3 week old original question.
It is only the most recent edit that invalidated it.

@Bellerophon well can't always work

Alright, so NEWS: France may have saved the EU single handedly.
:D

Indeed. I'm sitting in McDonalds and they're saying it right over my head. They're playing CNN.

Anybody care to give me the rundown?

What did France do?

@Secespitus They elected Macron to the presidency, instead of Le Pen.
The figures so far show ~62% (Macron) to ~38% (Le Pen) - about what was predicted during the last couple days.

Oh, good. Very good.

Q: How should we treat documenting worldbuilding?

kingledionReading these two (here and here) questions from Feralheart, there is obviously a lot of push to close these questions as off-topic. I believe this push is primarily due to people thinking that these questions are about software/writing, and not about worldbuilding. I think all phases of the wor...

@FutureHistorian They haven't saved it, just... not blown it up

Well, it still saved (barely).
We just have to see how other elections hold up.
But for now, the EU is saved.
The following elections are scheduled to occur in 2017. == Africa == Somali presidential election, 2017 8 February 2017 Gambian parliamentary election, 2017 6 April 2017 Algerian legislative election, 2017 4 May 2017 Lesotho general election, 2017 3 June 2017 Gabonese legislative election, 2017 29 July 2017 Rwandan presidential election, 2017 4 August 2017 Kenyan general election, 2017 8 August 2017 Angolan legislative election, 2017 23 August 2017 Liberian general election, 2017 10 October 2017 Chadian parliamentary election, 2017 Republic of the Congo parliamentary election, 2017 Malaga...

That's true. Wasn't Italy, Germany, and Greece having elections next?

We just need to see how the other elections hold up.
Especially Britain, to see if Brexit can be avoided still.

Never mind, @FutureHistorian just answered as soon as I posted.

The Germans are sensible

And as much as I usually support Labour, I am voting LibDem, but only because Corbyn is incompetent.

@Mithrandir24601 Normally we are, but the right extremists are gaining a lot of traction lately...

Even in Germany! :o What is the world coming to...

I know what you mean @FutureHistorian. I had the same problem during the last election: why I knew that Hillary had the experience, I felt that I couldn't trust her. Plus, I agree that political correctness had gotten way out of hand. I had someone get mad at me for wishing someone else Merry Christmas! Now, you can't say Happy Holidays at some places as it's seen as offensive too.
